Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

Codelco, a multi-process primary copper producer, is undertaking a full life cycle inventory (LCI) of all its commercial products based on copper and molybdenum. During this work, many questions have surfaced regarding the contribution of process unit design to specific aspects of a product's LCI and, more importantly, how such designs could be improved using a life cycle perspective. Management strategy efforts were undertaken to improve the LCI footprint, however it was found that the corrective actions were almost impossible to apply at the operation level in plant, given the ongoing timing pressures of extractive mining, and costs saving priorities. Additionally, it was found that most of the important comparative differences between operations had structural reasons. In this circumstance, the LCI practitioner group from 1M2, and the environmental managers from Codelco, decided to shift its efforts to place the critical LC1 aspects to the design process of future developments. Hatch Associates has developed unique tools in their Sustainable Plant Design (SPD) package that compliment and enhance LCA methods; these effectively drive sustainability into the heart of the design process. By using LCA and SPD in a project design phase, you cannot only address potential hotspots, but also decide on materials, location and size of certain facilities to optimize for energy efficiency. Moreover, you can avoid the shifting of environmental burdens upstream or downstream within the plant and finally it is extremely useful in identifying opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction.

The influence of the life of a mine extends beyond its immediate vicinity both in geographic and temporal terms. Decisions around mine approvals are generally made based on economics, for the mine owner and immediate environmental and social impacts by governments and communities. The value from life-of-mine planning can also be viewed in a holistic frame across the entire value chain from mine to product user. ONE OF THE NEWEST developments of industry rising from the commercial application of scientific knowledge is in the making of solid carbon dioxide from the gas about 1925 the first efforts were made to manufacture "dry ice" on a large scale and at a price to permit widespread use. From that beginning the industry has grown to a consumption of 40,000 tons in 1930. Carbon-dioxide ice, as the name implies, is merely the gas compressed and cooled to a solid. The ice has a temperature of 109° F. below zero and is in many ways superior to water ice. It evaporates to a gaseous form so it is not wet and leaves no trace; in fact, one suggested minor use is as coasters under water glasses on the dining table. The gas is harmless except in large concentrations and. when the ice is used as a refrigerant, the resulting gas actually becomes a preservative, keeping oxygen away from perishable products. Not only does the ice have a greater amount of cold in a small volume than water ice but cooling is effected by direct contact of the resulting gas with the materials to be refrigerated rather than by convection air currents.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. A shortage of landfill space and growing environmental concerns in Mexico are renewing interest in the recyclability of scrap from automobiles. This work describes a pyroumetallurgical process for the recovery of metallic lead from waste lead paste. Argentopyrite concentrate is commingled with lead paste residue and smelted in a fuming process thereby transferring the precious metals into lead bullion. The process consists of smelting lead paste and argentopyrite, sodium carbonate, and metallic iron at smelting temperatures of about 1100 T. The reaction products are slag and molten lead bullion enriched with precious metals. A major feature of this process is the removal of precious metals from the bullion by means of zinc, whereby a silver-zinc intermetallic compound is formed and floats out of the lead. The recoveries of precious metals are about 98%.

GREAT advances in the preparation of ores for reduction to ferro-alloys have been made, although standard methods of reduction have been continued at most plants. Efficiencies, yields per furnace, and energy requirements per ton are generally better than previously attained. The advantages of sizing and conditioning of ore, fluxing stone, and coke have been realized. Conditioning varies from drying the furnace burden to chemical rearrangements to facilitate reduction reactions and sometimes to furnish some of the energy required for the reaction before the burden reaches the furnace. During the war period it is impossible to discuss in detail many of the advances made. They are subjects for postwar papers. However, the new procedures mentioned in the following paragraphs are indicative of the work already done and in progress.

GOLD AND SILVER, the monetary metals, have presented in the last year a striking contrast; gold has experienced unusual prosperity, while silver has been depressed more severely than ever before. Gold mining has been hailed as the only basic industry that is able to thrive on depression; the new gold produced is thought by many to be the most important material for the reconstruction of prosperity. Silver production, meanwhile, has been sinking to its level of 40 years ago, and its price to a level never before recorded. These factors have reduced the value of silver produced in 1932 to about the value of the average annual production more than a century ago, that of the decade 1801-1810. No other major commodity in world trade appears to have suffered a greater decline during the present depression.

THERE has been much interest recently in the iron ore supply of the Lake Superior district. It may be of interest to this meeting to give some thought to this situation, dealing more particularly with the present great iron ore deposits of this section. Ores from its various iron ranges are the foundation of the tremendous tonnage of steel and iron of all kinds produced in the territory along and adjacent to the Great Lakes, drawing the bulk of its supply from this northwestern ore country. For a number of years estimates have been made of the quantity of available ore. The latest study, by M. C. Lake, chief geologist of the M. A. Hanna Co., is of great interest and brings the estimated tonnage to Jan. 1. 1929.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

Developed for more than 30 years, continuously improved, cored wire is nowadays a reliable solution for the improvement of sustainability, safety, health and doing quality and cost saving. Cored wire allows the addition of ferroalloys and treatment of liquid steel, especially concerning the calcium treatment. Amongst all the processes in secondary metallurgy, calcium treatment is certainly the most critical one before casting. Besides the traditional CaSi and CaFe wires, new types of wire have been designed for becoming the new reference in calcium treatment. PapCal (calcium insulated wire) and HDx (high density calcium wire) are a very versatile range of products. Indeed, according to the steelmaking process parameters (steel grade, treatment temperature, ladle size, calcium content targeted in tundish and even injection conditions), their technical specifications may be adapted in order to optimize the calcium treatment as high as possible.

The output or oil and gas rrom the producing fields in the United States is rapidly deelining. Coincident with this decline is a steadily increasing demand ror petroleum and its products, but at present there are no commercial substitutes ror gasoline and lubricating oil. Undoubtedly, many new fields will be discovered in this country during the next rew years. Indeed, there may be periods or temporary flush production that ror a rew months or a year or perhaps two years will afford a surplus. Such peaks are temporary and should not be given too much weight in considering the relation between petroleum supply and our national lire. In considering this problem we must regard a long period or time, and, ir we do that we shall see that domestic production will be unable to keep pace with consumption. Hence, the public good demands t~at the highest efficiency obtainable be practiced in the production or oil. To accomplish this end, the operator or to-day should so organize his rorces ror development and production that he recovers every barrel or oil that can be recovered at a profit. This necessarily involves the use or eeonomical and scientific methods or development a:nd production and the elimination or waste. The Bureau or Mines has ror years urged the conservation or petroleum and its products, and has pointed out that -such conservation should start before the oil is brought to the surface rather than arter it is in storage tanks. Losses or petroleum underground have undoubtedly been rar greater than losses in storage, in transportation, and in refining. The quantity lost usually is indeterminate, and hence difficult to express in terms or money, but by remembering that entire oil fields have been ruined by invadIng waters some idea may be gained or the importance or underground waste. The petroleum engineer is coming to be recognized as an extremely important aid in the intelligent development or oil fields. In this paper an effort is made to outline ror the engineer and producer a field or work whereby science and engineering not only can but have been applied practically. The mining engineer has been the direct- ing hand in the development of mines, and it is being recognized more and more that the petroleum engineer has a similar function in developing oil properties. Thispaper aims to show the general method of procedure in studying underground conditions in producing oil fields and how such study may not only correct but even prevent great unnecessary losses. Such work provides the company with maximum insurance for the field against loss and is accompliphed at minimum cost and minimum risk. Throughout the paper reference is made to oil wells and oil fields, but to a certain degree many of the suggestions relating to oil wells are applicable in the care and protection of gas wells and in solving gas problems.

In comparison to many mineral commodities, barite has a low unit value. It is mined and sold in low volumes in high-grade (90-98% BaSO4) forms to basically one industry that uses approximately 75% of the free world production. Based upon the above criteria, all factors must be considered in determining if a barite deposit is economical; such as, the type of deposit, mining and milling methods required, transportation to the markets, tariffs, local political conditions, etc. In other words, barite mines are made--not found. The length of this paper precludes any indepth discussion of geology, mining and metallurgy of barite. Most of this information can be found in data already published, such as D. A. Brobst's bulletin1 on the Barite Resources of the United States.

IN THE preliminary design of a coal washery, the most important factor to evaluate is the ash content of the final product. The ash content permissible may be imposed by market demands, but, in the final analysis, sooner or later - as most consumers today are buying coal on a 'heat value' basis - the coal operator has a certain margin of latitude. and the ash content of the coal to be delivered can be determined on the basis of maximum returns and highest profits. A few years ago, the most desirable separation was selected on the basis of the plus-minus 0.10; that is, the most desirable gravity of the separation was selected at the point showing a minimum amount of near gravities in the raw coal. The reason for this was an expected wide error over these near gravities. Today with the recent development of cry accurate, automatically controlled cleaning apparatus, a much larger latitude is possible, and the most desirable gravity of separation can be selected, almost exclusively, on the basis of the economic factors involved. To illustrate these new methods of investigation we shall give two examples, based on actual coals from the western United States.

The use of Alyavdin's equation Y(x,t) = 1-e(-bt) for describing the effect of grinding time on size distribution is discussed. The equation transforms into linear form by expressing it as log-log reciprocal (1 - Y) versus log t. For plotting, specially divided grids are available; Rosin-Rammler or Weibull charts may be used. The data of Herbst and Fuerstenau are especially useful for illustrating the Alyavdin-Weibull chart in two applications: (1) presenting data (which are relatively unaffected by experimental scatter) and comparing them with theoretical predictions, and (2) as a test for the zero-order kinetics production hypothesis. The chart based on the Alyavdin-Weibull equation is suggested as a useful aid in the analysis of kinetic data (/ versus f), though not as a procedure in its own right. Proposed applications are (1) displaying data with excellent clarity, since it avoids the kind of congestion inherent in some other plotting methods, and (2) as a test for assumed kinetic relationships. Sometimes, equation 1 describes the data quite closely, and in these cases the parameter values appear to be related to certain operating conditions.
