Placing a detonating explosive inside a volume of rock is an efficient method of rock fragmentation. The explosion generates internal tensile stresses in the rock, and because rock is a brittle material, this brings about crack propagation and fragmentation far more efficiently than does application of explosive on the surface. To get the explosive inside, we drill a pattern of boreholes and charge the explosive into the holes. This is really the one and only purpose of making blastholes in mining: to give access for the explosive to the interior of the rock. No matter how big and expensive a drilling jumbo we stand up in front of a rock face, and no matter how many boreholes we let it drill, the rock does not fall apart by itself without blasting. It is the action of the explosive in the boreholes that does it. When we consider that we need a pound or two of explosive for every cubic yard of rock to be fragmented, and a pint of borehole volume for each pound of explosive, we see that the process of blasthole charging is an important element in the whole process of rock blasting.

The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. The cooling of smelter gases by air dilution, adiabatic evaporative cooling and indirect heat exchange is discussed with reference to the process, to the subsequent cleaning of the gas. and to the use of the heat extracted from the gas. The method of reducing the effect of acidic sulphide formation on the corrosive properties of the gas and the dust and the development of surface cleaning mechanisms?are discussed. The development of indirect recuperators using air, water or steam cooling, made possible by the control of surface fouling is traced. The application of the modern Waste Heat Boiler to the new sulphide smelting processes is discussed with respect to the natural and forced circulation concepts. Case histories are presented to illustrate mistakes made with respect to designs produced without recourse to sensitivity analysis and without an appreciation of "worst process? conditions".

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

Almost all the presently viable nickel reserves in the Yilgarn Block contain nickel in a sulphide phase. Both volcanic peridotite- associated (VPA) deposits and intrusive dunite-associated (IDA) deposits are characterized by massive, matrix and disseminated sulphides (typically, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and other spinels), though in the IDA deposits the volume of disseminated sulphides is far greater than that in the VPA deposits. Potentially all geophysical techniques have application in the direct detection of these deposits'gravity for the detection of the dense massive and matrix ore; magnetics for the detection of magnetite and pyrrhotite in the ores; electromagnetics for the detection of the massive and matrix ore; and induced polarization for the detection of disseminated and to some extent matrix and massive ore. In practice the application of geophysical techniques is limited to a varying extent by (1) the relatively small size of an economic accumulation of sulphides, particularly the VPA deposits, (2) the extreme depth of weathering and lack of outcrop on the Yilgarn Block and (3) the abundance of geological noise or anomalous responses caused by sources other than economic mineralization.

CHANGES in mining practices have evolved so quietly and unobtrusively that perhaps we scarcely appreciate how truly startling these changes are unless we cast our minds back so as to compare the past with the present. Such retrospection is, indeed, necessary when attempting to forecast the future, for it is only by carefully reviewing the past that we can hope to obtain an indication of what the future may hold in store. In this instance, it is not necessary to delve into the very early history of . coal mining, as our purpose will be served if the last three or four decades are reviewed, a period that is still fresh within the memory of many of us. These earlier days might be termed the selective period of mining, for at that time the coal resources of the world had not been tapped to anything like the extent they are at present and this condition enabled the owners and operators to exercise selective powers and only mine such seams of coal as could be most easily reached an worked at the lowest possible cost and which, at the same time, would suit the requirements of the market. Carrying this thought of selective mining still further, the miner, who was then an artisan skilled in all the branches of his calling, was able to select or discard such parts of the seam he was working that the co al sent out of the mine was acceptable to the consumer with just the barest minimum of preparation. Compare these conditions with the? conditions prevailing today, when coal seams of medium height, good quality, and readily accessible have been largely depleted and the operator has been compelled either to carry on his operations under much greater depths of cover where the coal is more costly to win, or else to work seams of lesser height or of poorer quality.

Vanadium is an important metal that is used mainly in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys due to the high tensile strength, hardness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. Vanadium consumption in the steel industry represents about 85% of the vanadium-bearing products produced worldwide. The primary sources of the metal are patronite, roscoelite, and mottramite. Vanadium has also been produced as a by-product of the uranium production program which uses carnotite ores as a source of uranium. Vanadiferous magnetite iron ores are used for producing vanadium as well. In addition, it is known that vanadium can be recovered from the ashes of crude oil and petroleum coke. The process for treating boiler residues, fly ash and petroleum coke is similar to the process used to treat spent catalysts and ores. However, some of these materials may contain high carbon that must be removed at specific stage of the operation. Several processes are available for obtaining vanadium from fly ash, such as roasting vanadium bearing materials in the presence of sodium salt. The salt roasted calcine is subsequently leached with an alkaline or acidic solution. To obtain a cal-cine from which the vanadium can subsequently be recovered, the carbon in the source materials has to be eliminated prior to the roasting process. Other processes use the conventional hydrometallurgical route, in which fly ash is leached with sulphuric acid to obtain an impure vanadium pentoxide. The impure vanadium pentoxide is then treated with a sodium carbonate solution under atmospheric conditions to subsequently precipitate vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Actually, the salt roasting process is the only process used commercially. In the present study, the progress in the technology of vanadium extraction from secondary materials is reviewed. The perspectives and the challenges for new process development are discussed.

Introduction To The great majority of people, the term 'strip coal' has little or no meaning, or if it has any significance it is thought to refer to a poor grade of coal that had to be accepted during the war because no other fuel was available. Few people in the Province of Alberta realize the magnitude of our coal stripping industry, and fewer realize that strip coal has been available to domestic consumers for at least forty years. Among the first in the field of strip coal mining in Alberta were the Tofield Coal Company, Ltd., and Sterling Collieries Company Ltd. It was not until the advent of World War II, with its huge drain on industrial and domestic coal sup? plies produced by the underground mines, that some other source of coal was seriously sought. The tremendous shortage of manpower du ring this period of National emergency made it imperative that any increase in the coal production must be procured on a high tonnage per man-hour basis. It was therefore natural that the highly mechanized strip mine should be eagerly encouraged and subsidized by the Governmental agency - the Emergency Coal Production Board - under the very able direction of Mr. G. A. Vissac.

To enable the analysis of stability for a mine feasibility study a variety of geotechnical engineering parameters need to be obtained. At the early stage of a project it is usual for those responsible for the study to require a wide spatial distribution of RC holes in order to define a resource at the lowest possible cost. By the time a geotechnical study has commenced drilling priorities have usually switched to improving the definition of a resource, by drilling with diamond coring methods in the central area of the main orebody. The usual timing for geotechnical data collection is therefore after a wide distribution of holes have been drilled but which contain little geotechnical information. Conventional methods employed usually involve estimation methods, including book values and examination of disturbed core, or expensive additional drilling. With downhole geophysical methods we can economically take advantage of existing holes to obtain continuous values for density, defect orientation and ranking, elastic modulus values, unconfined compressive strength estimates and fracture frequency. This paper presents the results of a geophysical study and discusses the advantages and potential pitfalls of the method as compared to conventional methods of data collection.

At the Annual Western Meeting held at Blairmore, Alta., October 1924, the writer presented a paper drawing attention -to the advantages of portable gas-driven equipment for developing isolated mining properties. This type of equipment was at that time practically in its infancy and the details of results actually accomplished were somewhat meagre. During the last year or so a number of these plants have been installed so that it is now possible to offer more definite information regarding the actual mining progress accomplished with such plants and their cost of operation in various parts of the country. This paper has been written with the idea of reviewing the work done during the past year, and to supply data which may be of interest to those wh9 are confronted with the problem of selecting equipment for development or assessment work. Because drilling operations play such an important part in mining, one of the first problems that usually confront the prospective? mine owner is the selection of the proper com-pressed-air plant. The size and type of equipment and the method of driving it require careful consideration. The size and type of equipment is determined largely by the funds available, transportation facilities, and the speed with which the programme of development is to be carried out. The selection of the proper method of drive usually depends on local conditions, such as the relative cost of various fuels, and has an important bearing on operating costs.

During the war the National Research Council at Ottawa sent out questionnaires to the managers of nearly all the industrial plants in Canada. Inquiry was made as to the research equipment possessed, the number of research workers employed and the nature of the research problems which still remained unsolved. Practically all the companies reported that they had no special facilities for research, had no re-search workers and did not require the assistance of the National Research Council-because they had no research problems. Perhaps we have here one of the chief reasons why certain of our manufacturers find themselves unable to meet foreign competition. For hundreds of years the Indian tribes of northern Chile worked, in a small way, the copper deposits at Chuquicamata. They had no research problems and made no striking success of their mining operations. Then came an American company with a research problem, which they proceeded to solve. To-day the stock of that company has a market value of about $140,000,000.

Although secondary recovery of lead and lead-tin alloys has been common practice in the United States during recent years, there is little published in-formation concerning recovery techniques. Available information does not cover metal recovery from wet dross skimmings. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop techniques that would allow lead-tin alloys to be recovered from wet dross skimmings containing large amounts of zinc chloride. A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for recovering lead-tin alloys from wet solder dross skimmings. Straight water leaching, either with or without a second leaching operation carried out with a Na2C03 addition for removing chloride, produced a dross that could be smelted without further treatment. Overall recoveries averaging 92 percent of the metal values in the dross were obtained in the form of lead-tin alloys, which had an average tin content of 16 percent and lead content of 84 percent. The recovered alloy contained less than 0.02 percent zinc, as determined by both chemical and spectrographic analyses.

The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense' to suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial dining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of a1lu;ial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into ;Russia." The statement itself ii not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward.

Early computerised blast monitoring equipment consisted of a digital version of the existing analogue machines with, perhaps, a few enhancements. Many additional facilities have since been developed to enable the efficient collection of high quality data. These developments are examined with reference to digital sampling, triggering systems, the storage of complete recordings and signal processing. Recent advances have been made in the use of blast monitoring systems that comprise multiple blast monitoring locations with centralised control and data collection. Software has been developed to help record blast parameters and assess environmental effects. Computer databases have many advantages over their paper counterparts. Data can be easily retrieved and processed. The scaled distances used in the prediction and control of peak particle velocities can be calculated rapidly when the data are obtained directly from a database. Since the whole vibration signal can now be recorded, signal processing can be used to provide information such as signal length, dominant frequency and response spectra.

Raw water supply in the central Rocky Mountains often relies on trans-basin conveyance. Many of these older diversions incorporate high-elevation, miles-long tunnels driven over a century ago in hard rock. Tunnels were excavated using conventional drill-and-blast mining and weak ground was supported by timber sets and other various means. Over time, timbers rot and fail, rock quality deteriorates, and the timbers are gradually replaced by more timber, steel patches and braces, formed concrete, rock bolts, split sets, shotcrete, and other means which are commonly applied over existing support, thereby reducing tunnel cross sections, obscuring previous support systems, and rarely addressing the failing rock itself, leading to further deterioration of both the rock and the existing support. Traditional investigation techniques to assess compromised areas are often unfeasible due to access, depth, rubble and voids behind weight-bearing existing supports, confined space, poor invert conditions, poor ventilation, and flowing water. This presentation will discuss design procedures for assessing obscured ground conditions, assigning support classes which accommodate for unknowns, and implementing contractual means to address inevitable surprises or quantity overruns. Case studies include raw water supply tunnels in the Rocky Mountain region constructed between early to mid-20th century.

Key to successful innovation, whether at organization, industry or national level, is the alignment and utilization of resources in the most appropriate and efficient way. Innovation needs to be directed strategically, and it needs to be auditable in a systematic and integrated fashion. In the light of these considerations, this paper describes the construction and use of a topographical map of the innovation landscape. The purpose of the map is to provide a holistic view of the key factors that enable innovation (the so-called ’landmarks’), how well they are aligned to support a particular type/nature of innovation in the organization, and to identify possible gaps. The significance (importance) and height (performance) of the landmarks in supporting and enabling innovation within the organization is determined by means of a selfappraisal audit. The topography of the landscape derived thus is subsequently interpreted in terms of the organization’s particular innovation strategy and environmental context. The application of the Innovation Landscape Methodology is illustrated in a number of organizations within the Mining and Minerals Industry of South Africa. Important observations and conclusions regarding the strategic alignment of enabler strengths within these organizations are made.

Ore deposits are becoming more complex to mine as a result of the exhaustion of surface and other easily mined deposits. There is also increasing socio-political pressure to design more environmentally sound, sustainable, and safe mining practices. Wang and Ma designed a mining method for coal, similar to a modified drift and fill using a continuous miner to take sequential cuts (rooms) that are subsequently backfilled. The authors have modified the concept to make it more autonomous, safer, and less costly using highwall coal mining techniques, modified and adapted for underground applications. The method is more flexible than longwall mining and the percentage extraction would seem to be in the same range. In addition because of the backfilling, surface subsidence would not be a major issue and could be more effectively managed.

Design features and operating methods of ASARCO's new unit for the continuous melting and casting of tough pitch copper at Perth Amboy are described. Preliminary studies made for determinitzg economic feasibility and design details are also presented. Cathodes are preheated with oil and melted in an electric furnace at 40-ton per hr rate, from whence the molten copper is fed simultaneously to the wire bar casting wheel and the continuous casting of cakes and billets. In the early 1950's the copper refining furnaces at ASARCO's Perth Amboy plant reached a point where major expenditures would have to be made for replacement of the furnaces and the auxiliary equipment. The problem was whether to continue with the standard reverberatory furnaces or to consider continuous melting in electric furnaces. Reverberatory furnaces have been used for years in the copper industry and for some 50 years at the Perth Amboy plant. Reverberatory melting practice, however, imposes certain restrictions. These are reviewed in relation to their commercial application together with the new type of maintenance free gas re-combination lead-acid batteries which are opening so many new markets for lead.
