THAT the copper industry is in serious straits is admitted. So are the lead and zinc industries, and both lead and zinc are tariff protected. Conditions in the Western lead, zinc and silver mining districts are desperate. These are illustrated by the present disastrously low prices of these metals compared with the levels of two and three years ago and by the comparative rates of metal production and the present activity of the western mining camps. The January production of copper was 32.2 per cent of the 1929 average rate, of steel was 32.3 per cent of the 1929 average, while January production of pig iron was only 27.6 per cent of the monthly average of 1929. The copper industry is only one of many industries that are suffering in this tragic depression. It has been exceedingly prosperous and will be prosperous again when business recovers. Its difficulties are not unique and it does not deserve the tariff equivalent of a dole. The burden of subsidizing through an effective tax or tariff the minority group of high-cost mines would be a heavy one on the consuming public of the United States. On the basis of 1929 consumption figures, an effective 5c. tariff would result in an increased copper bill to the country of over $109,000,000, of which the electric manufacturers would contribute $26,000,000, the telephone and telegraph companies $16,000,000, and the automobile manufacturers $14,000,000. And of this total bill, only $33,000,000 would go to those who are urging a tariff and the balance of $76,000,000 would be paid to those who do not admit either its necessity or usefulness under present conditions.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912,) THE earliest example of attempting to form finely-divided materials into larger masses for better adaptation to commercial use was probably the briquetting of peat and lignite-waste at Paris by the use of a clay binder. It was from this attempt that our word briquette has arisen (Fr. la brique), the formed masses being shaped similar to ordinary bricks. This term does not, however, lend itself to the many shapes of such formed material as are now being produced, as few of them aside from some of the European brown-coal products bear any resemblance to the shape of that well-known article. The term "agglomeration " has therefore been chosen as more accurately descriptive of the products now being manufactured, this term including the molding as well as the sintering. With the increasing prices of fuel and ores and the greater demand for economy in the operation of industrial plants, more ,attention has been paid in recent years to the utilization of waste products and low-grade ores and fuels. Much of the waste has been occasioned by the inability to utilize finely ,divided ores and fuels in the furnaces because they could not be kept there, or else because they clogged up the furnace-shaft so that gases could not be forced through under ordinary conditions of operation. As a result, all such fines were thrown on the dump. Again, with the exhaustion of the richer deposits of ores, concentration of lower-grade ores becomes a necessity, and most concentrates are produced in a finely-divided condition. Aside from these considerations, there is also the economy in the cost of operating the plant; a furnace running on agglomerated material will have a much greater output than one working on fines. In one instance the charge of an iron blast-furnace was changed from fine concentrates to briquettes and the output was increased four-fold; better results could have been obtained had facilities been at hand for taking care of the increased output.

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to longer travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation may be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways may contribute to formation. This study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Co. to identify causes of the problem.

(Presented by invitation at a meeting of the Spokane Local Section of the institute, Feb. 17, 1912.) THE Pilares de Nacozari mine is located in Sonora, 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz. The town of Douglas is on the International Boundary and is the place at which the ores from the Bisbee mines are smelted. The Moctezuma Copper Co. owns the mines at Nacozari, and the copper-concentrates shipped to the Copper Queen smelter, at Douglas, make a good smelting-mixture with the Bisbee ores. The Moctezuma Copper Co. and the Copper Queen smelter at Douglas, as well as the railroad from Douglas to Nacozari, are owned by the Phelps Dodge Co. The ore-deposit occurs in the form of a large ellipse with a major axis of approximately 2,000 ft. and a minor axis of about 600 ft., the major axis bearing about 90 W. of N. The whole of this ellipse is more or less mineralized; the surface being principally an iron gossan with some occasional copper-stains. Below the oxidized zone, which is not more than 50 ft. deep, the minerals are pyrite and chalcopyrite, with occasional seams of chalcocite, the latter being rare. There appears to be no well-marked zone of secondary enrichment, the oxidized gossan over the greater part of the deposit changing suddenly to what is apparently the original unaltered ore. The copper-values are concentrated around the perimeter of the ellipse, and it is principally around this perimeter that the mining is done. The ore mined averages a little more than 3 per cent. of copper, with a small amount of silver, less than an ounce per ton. Some ore of considerably higher grade than this has been shipped, however, but the above average is of the mill-run. The ore is wider near the two ends of the ellipse than along the sides, and is mined in some cases to a width exceeding 200 ft. It is easy for a coal spokesman to relate to the theme of this meeting--that the decade of the 1970's is pivotal for the mineral industries. For the coal operator, this period is crucial. The coal industry, according to most energy forecasters, must gear its production machinery to meet a sharp rise in the demand for coal--in this decade to sustain inevitable boosts in electricity output, and in the next to start supporting a big new domestic synthetic fuels industry that is already in the formative stage. The logic of that projection flows from a combination of hard circumstances--proved reserves of domestic fluid fuels are dwindling, the hope for bountiful and cheap nuclear power must be indefinitely deferred, and the threat of long-term fuel imports to the national interests is becoming starkly visible. Only coal, with its assets of abundance, security and versatility, offers the nation an adequate and immediate lift out of its current energy crisis. A hard-won expansion of coal production made the critical difference between local power load-shedding and major area blackouts in 1970, the year the energy crisis went public. Coal will have to play that same key role, not just through this pivotal decade but through the turn of the century. But the logic of fuel demand apparently does not always extend to supply. The coal industry has had a huge production job laid out for it by the energy statisticians, but up to now the energy policy-makers have not followed through with the aids and inducements that the coal operator urgently needs to do that job well and completely.

"A method has been proposed for the pre-treatment of high phosphorus iron ore by carbothermic reduction assisted with microwave irradiation and magnetic separation on a laboratory scale. Chemical analysis of the reduced ore sample, the metal sample and the slag sample were conducted. Based on the above research, the influences of carbon addition, microwave power and microwave irradiation time on the recovery of Fe and dephosphorization were discussed. It indicated that the increase of microwave irradiation time and power had substantial effect on the recovery of Fe while the influence of carbon addition was not obvious and the highest iron recovery ratio reaches some 95.5% when the dephosphorization ratio was 37.68%. A high iron recovery ratio and a reasonable dephosphorization rate were incompatible under the conditions investigated in this study due to the reduced iron and because unreduced P-contained gangues were not efficiently separated. This method may provide a reference for the future utilisation of high-phosphorus iron ore.IntroductionWith the rapid growth of crude steel production in China, the source of iron ore tends to become increasingly strained and is facing the risks of raw material shortage for the iron and steel industry. In order to decrease the production cost, China has to focus on the utilization of its domestic low grade iron ores for the iron and steel plants [1-2]. China has a large deposit of high phosphorous iron ore with a reserve of 7.45 billion tons which is unused in any large scale [3]. Therefore, the development of a successful and economically viable technology for high phosphorus iron ore is of profound importance. To remove phosphorus from the high phosphorus iron ore, several mineral and metallurgical processes have been proposed, such as bio-leaching [4], roasting reduction plus melting separation [5], pre-reduction and screening methods combined with mechanical crushing or air jet milling[6] selective agglomeration plus reverse flotation [7]. However these processes are not cost effective or are time consuming. The traditional pyrometallurgical process( BF+ BOF) refuse this kind of ore mainly because that molten iron is saturated with carbon or high carbon content and thus all phosphor us in the burden goes to the molten iron[8]. Therefore, it is important to exploit the cheap and abundant high phosphorus iron ore as a resource in ironmaking. In recent years, the microwave was widely introduced as a heat resource for extractive metallurgy of iron ore or other minerals. For example, microwave assisted ore milling, microwave assisted carbothermic reduction of metal oxides and microwave assisted mineral leaching issues[9-10]"

Fractional distillation is the most important process in the commercial refining of petroleum. The same procedure, conducted on a small scale, is the basis of a number of analytical methods of wide application in the petroleum laboratory. The Bureau of Mines has studied apparatus and procedure for the distillation analysis of petroleum, and this report is presented as a record of developments up to the present time. The work is incomplete, but the extensive information that has been obtained to date is made available as a guide in handling laboratory distillation problems. The analytical distillation of petroleum is commonly made to determine range of boiling points or to separate the oil. into fractions for detailed examination, or both. When only one of these two ends is sought the procedure involved is notably simpler than when, as is more common, information is required regarding both boiling range and properties of fractions. Moreover the degree of minuteness of measurement and the accuracy of the data required from analytical distillations differ considerably. Often the simplest sort of comparative figures are satisfactory; other tests require complicated and highly tedious procedure. No one distillation method is universally applicable, and it is impossible for anyone group of investigators to foresee all the different kinds of requirements that may occur in the industry.

The numerous small high grade gold and silver deposits of the Front Range Mineral Belt have been uneconomical because of the high costs of mill construction, transportation, and smeltering. Processing of these ores must be simple, cheap, with satisfactory recoveries, and be environmentally acceptable. Vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery satisfies these parameters. A battery of testing was conducted utilizing bottle and bucket tests. A five ton vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery gave excellent results while a five ton heap leach proved impractical due to channeling.

UTAH has enormous deposits of high-grade bituminous coal. The United States Geological Survey estimates that there are 13,130 sq. mi. of land in Utah known to contain workable coal and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. Growth in population and development of industry in the intermountain and Pacific coast regions will in time give Utah a place with the great coal producing states of the country. Even today, faced by adverse conditions in competition with cheap fuel oil from southern California, water-power throughout the western states in general, and comparatively high freight rates to its distant markets, the Utah coal industry is notable in many respects. In recent years, Utah has led the United States both in the percentage of its mines in class 1, mines producing more than 200,000 tons a year, and in average production per man per day, which was 6.01 tons in 1921. "A method and device are described for sampling diamond-drill core by cutting a continuous fillet of constant cross section from the cylindrical surface of the core throughout appropriate sample lengths. The apparatus employs a tapered, abrasive-set, cutting wheel, the conical cutting surface of which projects slightly into a rectangular core-guiding trough set parallel to the axis of rotation. The depth of fillet and thus the amount of sample per unit length can be regulated by adjusting the core guides. The freshly cut fillet itself, by engaging in a guide beyond the cutting wheel, acts to prevent rotation of the core during operation of the device.The cuttings which form the sample are normally collected in a tray below the cutting-wheel and appear at about 80 per cent -100 mesh. They require little or no further treatment or comminution before analysis. "Concrete is a common denominator to the building process and portland cement is an integral and necessary component of concrete. The cost of portland cement is nominal and its cost comprises, in most instances, a small portion of the total cost of ""put-in-place"" concrete.The domestic demand for portland cement in Canada is projected to be slightly less than 11 million short tons in 1980. In order to achieve this projected goal, stabilization or lowering of the cost of put-in-place construction is necessary. This enhancement of the cost of building can be achieved by:(1) improving the building process;(2) refining and improving design techniques; and(3) developing improved and economical concrete products.Some of the techniques and materials that will lead to building cost stabilization include systems building in its broadest sense, slipforming, precasting, prestressing, computer design, lightweight aggregates, fibrous concrete and integration of building components."

The paper will explain how to successfully implement a robotic solution from the initial idea to a working industrial solution. Primetals Technologies can call upon 10 years of experience in installation of Robot solutions in the harsh environment of steelmaking plants - the so-called LiquiRob. To enhance an existing shroud manipulation system, the idea to connect the shroud with a bayonet mechanism to the ladle nozzle was born in accordance with the requirements of a well-known steel producer. The paper will describe the development steps from the first simulations and prototype testing in the laboratory, it will show the intensive system testing under workshop conditions and will finally depict the successful integration into the plant. Furthermore, operational experience will be shown as well as the advantages of such an installation compared to other shroud manipulation systems.

"Introductory and GeneralTHE DRIESSEN CONE bas been used fairly extensively commercially as a classifier. Its use as a concentrator in the upgrading of ores at a fairly high ratio of concentration with concomitant recoveries has been almost negligible. Certain known features about the cone, however, such as its high throughput capacity, cheapness of construction and operation, and simplicity of design have attracted the attention of mill men. An inadequate knowledge of the operating characteristics of the cone when used as a concentrator seems to have been the main reason for its lack of use. It was for this reason that the present investigations§ were undertaken to determine the operating characteristics of the cone and its application to the concentration of uranium ores, with particular emphasis being placed on the concentration of low-grade uranium ores.The investigations were started in December, 1951, and have continued uninterrupted to the present. The initial work was confined chiefly to investigating the operating characteristics of the cone in order to establish the trends that certain variables would exert on the general metallurgy of uranium concentration. Optimum metallurgy was therefore not the prime initial objective."

Rare earth elements (REEs) are valuable for various modern technological applications, including metallurgy, machine building, radio electronics, instrument engineering, nuclear engineering, and manufacturing. The extraction and separa-tion of rare earth elements (REEs) from their complex ores is challenging due to their distinct physical and chemical properties, contributing to their market scarcity. At present, REE recovery utilizes traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgi-cal processes. The overall process in the recovery and sepa-ration of individual elements from complex REE systems suffers from high energy demands and the use of many haz-ardous chemicals that negatively impact the environment. With the growing trend toward a circular economy aim-ing to balance sustainability, efficiency, and environmental impacts, this research is focused on using deep eutectic sol-vents (DESs): a combination of a quaternary salt: Choline Chloride and five organic acids: Oxalic Acid, Urea, and Ethylene Glycol, Lactic acid and Glycerol for the selective leaching of REEs from their complex ore which is proven to be green, selective, non-toxic, biodegradable, and cheap. The effects of different DESs and leaching time on the REE leaching efficiency were determined, and the optimum DES media were found to be Oxaline and Lactic Acid at which a leaching efficiency of 25% and 15% was achieved at 80°C respectively for cerium.

"The phosphorus content of an iron ore is a determining factor as regards the value of the ore and also its metallurgical treatment. If some method of treatment, such as concentration, leaching, etc., could be used and the phosphorus con- tent of the ore reduced, it would be an important advancement in the iron mining industry towards the utilization of high phosphorus ores. Large bodies of material toe high in phosphorus to be marketable under present conditions would be made available, and a great deal of ore from the Cuyuna Range and other places, which is relatively high in phosphorus but otherwise suitable for making spiegel, could be reduced in phosphorus content sufficiently to permit its use in furnaces producing speigel.The form in which phosphorus occurs in iron ore is a much disputed question and it probably varies with the type and location of the ore. The statement has been made that ore piles on long exposure to the atmosphere often decrease in their phosphorus content. (Emmons, S.F. - Ore deposits, 1913, p. 652; Leith, C.K., Mesabi iron bearing district, U.S.G.S. Monograph 43, 1903, p. 275) There is described below experiments on the leaching of iron ores high in phosphorus, to determine whether it was economically possible to reduce the phosphorus content appreciably by leaching. As the research had a practical as well as a theoretical application, only low concentration of acids and alkalies were used.A number of variables were tried, among these being: (1) The solvent used, (2) strength of the solvent, (3) volume of solution used, (4) time ore was agitated (5) type of ore, and (6) screen size of the ore. The amount of ore taken was kept constant."

Often associated with these communities are occurrences of localized over exploitation of natural resources, environmental destruction and the abundance of social ills.
