Zinc smelting is frequently termed a backward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, low-unit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pounds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the time required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, or producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser attached to one end of the retort, where it condenses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls and of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnaces is only about 12 per cent. Coals may be divided into six classes-anthracite, semi anthracite, semibituminous, bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. The first three cla~ can be distinguished by dHferences of composition, particularly the proportions of fixed carbon and the ratios of the fixed carbon to the volatile matter in the cools. The last three classes can be distinguished by di:fferences in physical character, chiefly in color and in manner of weathering. Lignite is brown, not black, and has generally a woody look, but it weathers in much the same way as subbituminous coals. On exposure to the air lignite slacks or crumbles. The lumps check and fall into small irregular pieces that exhibit a decided tendency to separate into extremely thin plates. Hence lignite deteriorates greatly during storage or long transportation. The most characteristic feature of the composition of lignite is a large percentage of moisture. '!his high moisture content reduces the fuel value of freshly mined lignite, and the partial evaporation of moisture, on expooure, causes th6 fuel to check and fall to pieces. Consequently, attempts to increase the efficiency of lignite as a fuel involve reducing its percentage of moisture and increasing its ability to endure storage and transportation. Both these results are accomplished by briquetting.

Hydrolysis of NbC15 is used to recover oxide values for ceramic and metals production. Reaction of NbC15 with water is rapid, exothermic and vigorous, yielding a gelatinous slurry. In contrast, dissolution of NbC15 in 12 N HCl is endothermic, resulting in a clear yellow solution. Such solutions can be de-hydrochlorinated by controlled contact with air, to precipitate a tantalum¬rich solids, depleting the liquid of its tantalum content. In this way, cheap, useful Nb-Ta partial separation is achieved. The separation is based upon differential oxide-chloride stability. Nb2O5 with <200 ppm Ta/Nb has obtained from starting levels of 2000 ppm. Observations are made on the different types of hydrolysis.

THE problem of making iron-manganese alloys of scientific purity is a rather difficult one. They cannot be prepared in air because of the readiness with which the metals oxidize at the temperature of melting; and they cannot be prepared in vacuum because of the, high vapor pressure-of- manganese. The very property of: manganese which permits it to be purified interferes with the utilization of the best method of making pure alloys. Accordingly, it is necessary to use a gas atmosphere which will not affect the-properties of the alloys. The gases available for the purposes are hydrogen; helium and argon. Nitrogen forms intermetallic compounds with manganese very readily. Hydrogen, while valuable as a deoxidizer and having the advantage of being comparatively cheap, is explosive over a wide range and, has a rather high thermal conductivity. Helium is reported as, costing little but is difficult to secure at a reasonable price and also has a conductivity nearly as high as hydrogen. Since argon has a sufficiently low thermal conductivity, it has been selected for use in one induction furnace for melting, under a controlled, gas atmosphere, in spite of its cost, which is so high (70 cents to $1.50 per cubic foot) that it must be stored and purified.. Such a gas atmosphere-as argon makes necessary the use of the, high-frequency induction method of heating. Cyanide is a toxic species that is found predominantly in industrial effluents generated by metallurgical operations. Cyanide&apos;s strong affinity for metals makes it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment and as a lixivant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but require safeguards to prevent accidental spills. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and oxidation, including photolytic advanced-oxidation processes, are therefore reviewed. Reaction mechanisms are presented throughout the paper. The methods are compared in regards to their effectiveness in treating various cyanide species: free cyanide, thiocyanate, weak-acid dissociables, and strong-acid dissociables.

The mineral kaolinite is one of the commonest minerals in the uppermost 10 m of the continental crust; ranking in abundance alongside minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar and calcite. Only very exceptionally does it possess all the necessary properties needed to make it worth commercially exploiting. The terms &apos;Kaolin&apos; and &apos;Kaolinite&apos; are derived from a locality known as &apos;Kau-ling&apos;, in Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China; where samples of a white clay used by the Chinese to make porcelain were first obtained by European missionaries and explorers in the eighteenth century.

THE recent completion by the United States Aluminum Company of a $4,000,000 addition to its plant at Massena, N. Y., consisting of a large blooming mill and structural mill, gives this organization, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America, the distinction of possessing the largest aluminum rolling mill in the world, as well as the first mil1 in this country to roll aluminum exclusively. The plant is located near the international boundary line between Canada and the United States, about 3 miles from the St. Lawrence River, to take advantage of the development of cheap hydroelectric power which is needed not only for the manufacture of structural shapes from the ingots, but in the reduction of alumina to the metal by the well-known Hall process as well. A power canal from the St. Lawrence River to the power house on the Grasse River at the plant provides for the waterflow, which, coupled with a drop of 47 ft. in 2% miles, generates 80,000 hp. through vertical turbines. An additional 60,000 hp. is purchased.

Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine venti lation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which ,accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, inc luding coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.

"Necessary Qualities There mines are located in out of the way places, where timber is scarce and its price high, the problem of protecting it from fire risk is of considerable practical importance. Scarcity of timber for mining purposes is commonly met with in the more arid parts of the country, where, also, mine timbers are most likely to become dry, and inflammable, and where, therefore, the risk from fire is accentuated. Any effective and cheap method of securing adequate protection of such timber at the lowest possible cost is worthy of careful investigation. The use of magnesite cement has been suggested in this connection.The necessary qualities for any substance for the use suggested above may be summarized as follows: It should be resistant to abrasion, and to impact and structural stresses. It should be durable when subjected to the action of the ele¬ments, and stable to any minor derangements of the base on which it is placed. It must be relatively unaffected by changes in temperature, by the action of water, and should adhere to the material on which it is placed, and it should also be free from shrinkage cracks due to setting up the material, Magnesite cement appears to fulfill the various conditions outlined above.The elasticity of such cement is the outstanding quality which makes it desirable for exterior work. It also possesses the ability to adhere to all materials in a marked degree. Its freedom from expansion and contraction after setting is one of the principal reasons for its adhesive quality. It may be applied to old brick or stone walls, even tho they have been repeatedly covered with paint, and the quality of ad-hearing to wood makes it possible to secure a weather-proof protection to the wooden casings and trim of exterior openings. The quality of adhesion and elasticity is easily proved by applying a 1/2"" layer to a 1"" board which has been first covered with metal lath. Such a board, about 8 feet long, may be repeatedly deflected about 3"" in the center without breaking the bond to the board, or causing any cracks to appear in the magnesia cement. The ability to resist fire as well as the possession of insulating qualities are also desirable characteristics of magnesia cement stucco."

"Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

In answer to inquiries from members, Mr. Sheafer said that the culm-banks of which his paper gave the shipments were of about the average quality of the banks in the Mahanoy region of the Schuylkill field,.made prior to 1881 or 1882, when the practice of preparing buckwheat coal was introduced; but that in a very old hank, made about 1849, no coal above pea-size had been found. Apparently it was then the practice to ship everything. In reply to an inquiry concerning the utilization of the fine coaldust, Mr. Sheafer said that it was not utilized in connection with the washing described in his paper, but was carried away in the water as waste; that during Mr. Corbin&apos;s presidency the Reading Company built at Mahanoy City an extensive plant for making artificial fuel, but difficulty was encountered, due to the circumstance that the small coal from different collieries varied in its combustible quality and also in the amount of pitch required to be mixed with it, and he believed they concluded that from some varieties of the coal-dust a very good fuel could be made, but at a cost entirely too great for successful competition with cheap coal. Of course, the anthracite dust was not so well suited to this manufacture as bituminous slack. R. W. Raymond, New York City : I believe that was the practical outcome of the enterprise of a member of the Institute, Mr. E. F. Loiseau, now deceased. It was found, I think, as an additional drawback, that the manufacture of artificial compressed fuel from anthracite dust could not be successfully practiced with material so impure as that of the culm-banks. Consequently, the manufacture could be based on that source of supply only when accompanied with a preparatory washing. The most favorable location for it would be at large yards where the waste from the handling of coal, which is comparatively pure material, could be thus treated. I believe the manufacture of compressed fuel from bituminous coal was at one time a profitable business in Nova Scotia, but was destroyed by the indirect effect of the general introduction of watergas for illuminating purposes. In mining operations the cost of timber is an item of much importance, because the life of mine timbers is, in many cases, very short and, as the supply of the better grades becomes depleted, less durable kinds must be used. This, of course, tends to shorten still further the period of service-ability. While it is possible that concrete and steel may, to some extent, take the place of timber in mines, their high initial cost and the difficulty in installation will greatly restrict their use. Moreover, wood, besides being comparatively cheap to handle, possesses other desirable qualities, and for many purposes a satisfactory substitute is hard to find. Both the decreasing supply and the increasing price of timber make its more efficient utilization imperative. AGENCIES DESTRUCTIVE TO MINE TIMBERS Timber used in mines is exposed to destruction from many sources. Wear, breakage, and waste are responsible for much loss. Wood rollers and drum laggings must be frequently replaced on account of the constant wear by ropes. Unprotected timber in chutes and mills is also rapidly worn by abrasion, and track ties in main haulage ways get worn by the feet of mules, cut by ropes, etc. Large amounts of timber are broken by &apos;crush&apos; and &apos;squeeze,&apos; and much temporary timber is buried beyond all recovery in pillar workings and in those mines which resort to back filling. Decay and insect attack, however, cause the greatest damage. If not totally destroyed by one or both of these, the timbers frequently become so weakened that they break under the pressure upon them.

IN combating mine-fires the use of carbon dioxide as a means of producing an atmosphere in which combustion cannot be sustained, has been many times suggested and frequently tried, generally with a fair degree of success. The carbon dioxide is produced by acting on limestone with dilute sulphuric acid, large wooden boxes being used to hold the limestone, and arranged in such a manner that one box may, be cleaned and refilled with blocks of limestone while another is being used in generating the carbon dioxide. The gas is led by means of pipes of large diameter to the location of the fire, tight brattices having been previously put up as close to the fire as possible on every side, so as to limit the space to be filled with the .gas to the smallest possible volume. The cost of producing Carbon Dioxide has been, however, a decided draw-back to the use of this method, and the danger of producing carbon monoxide by the reduction of the carbon dioxide by heated carbon, and consequently bringing about an explosion, has also tended to prevent the application of this method. The use of sulphur dioxide in combating mine-fires has not, I believe, been previously suggested or tried, and yet the method presents such decided advantages over the use of carbon dioxide that it seems proper to suggest the advisability of considering it as a cheap, convenient, and safe means of fighting stubborn mine-fires. 1. Cost, Preparation, etc.-One ton of brimstone, costing from $20 to $30, will produce about 25,000 cu. ft. of sulphur dioxide gas, and allowing for all sources of loss it is probable that sulphur dioxide gas can be produced for about $1,300 per 1,000,000 cu. ft. For carbon dioxide gas, produced by the action of sulphuric acid on limestone, a good estimate would be $4,000 per 1,000,000 cu. ft., provided that sulphuric acid

The first coat made up to a consistency that works easily under the trowel is applied in the usual manner. No water should be added to the liquid chloride as it would alter its density, and injure the work. The second or finishing coat is then applied. The aggregates are different in each, and no other dry material should be added to them as they come to the trade. The cement may be applied in zero weather without damage. Setting is quite slow under such conditions, but the cement ultimately becomes hard. It should always be applied to a dry surface excepting that under certain conditions it is desirable to apply a solution of magnesium chloride before using the stucco."

WHEN the Cushing field flooded the oil market in 1914 and 1915 with a daily output equal to nearly one-third of the world&apos;s production, the situation was soon corrected by increased consumption, and the price of crude oil rose from 45 c. per barrel in, February 1915 to $1.10 in December of the same year-the highest price paid in the Mid-Continent field up to that time. The intensive search for oil during the following seven years failed to disclose a single new ,field equal to Cushing, and many observers concluded that the rapidly increasing number of wells contributing to the world&apos;s output, each declining roughly 20 per cent. a year, combined with the rapidly increasing con¬sumption of petroleum, made it highly improbable that any field would; be found again sufficiently large to seri¬ously affect the oil market. That seven exceptional fields should then be discovered simultaneously is a remarkable coincidence. Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, and Powell, each exceeded Cushing in daily output and reached the apex of their production during a year when Burbank, Tonkawa, - Smackover and Huntington Beach each contributed several times the daily output of the average new pool. This unexpected and tremendous flood of flush production could only have the effect of depressing price and greatly adding to stocks throughout the country. It was particularly depressing in the Mid-Continent as the new oil from California proved of attractive refining grade and because of cheap transportation by water easily undersold Oklahoma crude in the eastern markets.

Graphite occurs in many places in the United States, but previous to 1914 the domestic production amounted to only 15 to 20 per cent of the natural graphite consumed in this country. Including artificial, graphite, the proportion was about 25 per cent. During the World War the production of both natural and artificial graphite increased until, in 1918 it, contributed more than one-half of the available supply, and since 1919 the proportion has not fallen below 40 per cent. Except during the war period, however, this apparently increasing independence has not been due to any large increase in production from domestic mines. It simply reflects a larger output of artificial graphite and reduced imports of Ceylon lung and chip, grades which have never been produced in substantial quantity in the United States. DOMESTIC DEPOSITS3 American graphite deposits, though numerous and often large, are characteristically low-grade. They constitute an abundant source of potential supply, but in normal times they have proved relatively costly to work, and even at the same price the various products have never been able wholly to displace certain imported qualities, notably crucible grades from Ceylon and pencil graphite from Mexico.
