This paper, describing the various mining methods and practices at Britannia mines, Britannia Beach, British Columbia, is one of a series covering mining practices, methods, and costs in the mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Britannia property has been operated continuously for 30 years, and in that time many diverse methods have been used in exploiting the various types of orebodies worked. Under normal conditions mining methods include surface gloryholes, shrinkage stoping, shrinkage with powder drifts for primary breaking, horizontal cut-and-fill, horizontal and inclined square-setting, and timbered and open rills, the three latter systems being combined with close filling. The Britannia method of mining, a large-scale retreating shrinkage system usually combined with powder drifts for primary breaking, has been developed and applied here very successfully. Each block of ground as developed is studied as a separate problem, and the mining method, or combination of methods best adapted to the work in hand is applied thereto. Operating at, capacity, the series of mines produces 7,000 tons of ore per day.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the methods of development and operation and gives the results of controlled water injection into oil sands in Illinois. The Bureau of Mines studied the potential availability of primary antimony (Sb) from demonstrated resources in 21 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). Twelve of these properties were evaluated as producers and nine as non- producers. The 21 studied properties contain 499,600 mt Sb as demonstrated resources, of which 304,000 mt is recoverable as antimony metal; another 973,500 mt Sb is contained in inferred resources. Recoverable antimony from demonstrated U.S. deposits is only 10,700 mt, just 3.5 pct of the MEC total. Domestic production of primary antimony from operating mines has averaged only 561 mt/yr over the 10-yr period 1975-84. This represents just over 5 pct of total U.S. consumption of primary antimony, which averaged 11,081 mt/yr during the same period. The United States will thus continue to rely on imported ores andlor concentrates, antimony oxides, and metal to satisfy domestic industrial requirements. At production costs up to $1.15/lb Sb, 110,000 mt of refined antimony is potentially available from 10 of the 21 studied properties. At $2/lb, 294,000 mt Sb is available, and at $3/lb, the total rises to 304,000 mt Sb available from all evaluated producers of refined antimony.

A hydrometallurgical process is described for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates. The process is based on a cupric chloride leach, the concentrate having first been "activated" by heating it with sulphur at a temperature near 400°C. This activation process converts most of the iron of the chalcopyrite to pyrite, which is insoluble in the cupric chloride leachant. The copper is converted to the mineral idaite, which dissolves readily in hot cupric chloride: at 106°C, 98% of the copper is extracted in a three-stage countercurrent leach, the leaching tirqe being 1 hour per stage. The sulphur of the chalcopyrite appears as elemental sulphur, which is recycled for the activation of further concentrate, the final leach residue consisting of pyrite, plus the gangue present in the original concentrate. The copper extracted can be recovered by electrowinning, using a diaphragm cell. Current efficiency (one-electron basis) is about 70% but the cell voltage is only about 1 V, so that power consumption is three times lower than for the conventional sulphate electrowinning process. The leachant is simultaneously regenerated in the anode compartment. The behaviour of minor elements in the concentrate has also been studied.

The work of the metallurgical fundamentals section during the past year, representing active experimental investigation or thermodynamic study, may be summarized as the following problem subjects: 1. Low-temperature specific-heat investigations. 2. Development of a method of concentrating gases. 3. Thermodynamic properties of metallic carbides and nitrides, 4. Production of pure chromium from chromium chlorides. 5. Thermodynamic properties of the hydrates of calcium, sulphate. While this list is not identical, with officially designated problems, due to overlapping of subjects and to new developments within specified problems, presentation upon the basis of this subdivision will best serve to review the work of the section.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed the solid wastes that have accumulated from coal mining in Washington, Oregon, and Montana. Location, amount, character, and condition were determined, and both economic and environmental factors were considered. Areas covered by waste comprise 800 acres in Washington, 5 acres in Oregon, and 1,200 acres in Montana. In a few cases waste is being utilized, particularly cinder from burned refuse dumps, as fill in road construction and as a ceramic raw material. It is estimated that wastes deriving from coal mined for electric power generation by 1974 may amount to 3 million tons of washery refuse, 2.7 million tons of fly ash, and 1,000 acres of spoil banks.

Despite its great potential utility, ion exchange has only achieved limited application in hydrometallurgy. To a significant extent this is due to the limitations of conventional ion exchange process design as well as the properties of the ion exchange resins themselves. Over the past decade several new ion exchange resins have been introduced with properties that make them potentially very useful for various hydrometallurgical separations. In addition, a novel ion exchange process called Reciprocating Flow Ion Exchange or Recoflo, which has been employed in the metal finishing industry for the last dozen or so years for chemical recovery and effluent treatment, has been shown to offer a number of unique and significant advantages over conventional I.X. technology.

The purpose of this program is to demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of noise control for secondary and tertiary crushers in surface non-coal mining plants and mills. It is a part of the broad Bureau of Mines program to reduce noise in mines to levels mandated in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. Utilizing the results of previous contractual research efforts in which noise levels of secondary crushers had been measured, two noise enclosures were designed and evaluated for the REXNORD Symons 7-ft diameter secondary and tertiary crushers installed at the Jackson County Iron Company, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The first enclosure had a circular shape following closely that of the crusher and was built up entirely of quick-release panels which can be handled by the crusher operator alone. The second enclosure was octogonal in shape and can be rapidly removed, partially or totally using an overhead crane. Both enclosures fully satisfy the noise reduction objectives and permit daily and long-term maintenance of the crushers. Cost analyses show the cost of the enclosure to be less than 10 per cent of the cost of the crusher, the cost of the octagonal enclosure being estimated at only 60 percent of that of the circular one, e. g. $15,000 against $25,000. It is concluded that the octagonal enclosure best meets the needs of the Jackson County Mining Company and it is recommended that an experimental enclosure be built at the earliest possible time, as proof-of-concept.

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully electro-refining titanium metal. Refining is accomplished in e fused-salt electrolyte using offgrade metal as the anode and collecting the purified metal at the cathode. The characteristics and requirements of the various alkali chlorides tested as electrolytes are discussed in relation to relative ease of purification and serviceability. The various types of cells designed and tested for electrorefining are illustrated and their method of operation discussed. The individual advantage of each cell and the purpose for which it was designed are reviewed. The magnitude of the cathode current density was found to depend largely upon the quantity of soluble titanium chloride in the electrolyte. The physical condition of the anode also greatly affected the cathode current density.

Sponge iron is a product resulting from the reduction of an iron oxide below the temperature at which the product melts. Commercial grades usually contain 80 to 95 percent metallic iron, 2 to 5 percent unreduced iron oxide, and an amount of siliceous gangue material depending on the pur.ity of the are used for reduction. The reducing agent may be gaseous or solid, and a large variety of procedures have been proposed for bringing the reducing agent into reaction with the iron oxide. Of the proposed procedures, the one that has the distinction of having been in continuous commercial operation for the longest time, from 1911 to date, was developed at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden, and yields? a product that has an enviable reputation as furnace feed wherever special, high-quality steels are made.

This report is the fourth in the series, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants. The initial work, Bureau of Mines In- formation Circular 7516, was published in October 1949 in conjunction with the synthetic liquid fuels program authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. It included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. A supplemental bibliography, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, was published in January 1955 to cover the period September 1948 through June 1952; and Supplement 2, Information Circular 7751, published in September 1956, covered the period June 1952 through June 1954. The Lower Indus Basin deposits form a substantial unconfined alluvial aquifer of excellent quality. This aquifer contains basically highly saline groundwater, overlain in places by considerable amounts of freshwater whose origin can be traced to the present and historical courses of the River Indus. In the past the main source of groundwater recharge has been direct river seepage and water tables were generally deep. Since the establishment of a perennial irrigation regime however, deep percolation from the increased irrigation supplies has predominated and the water-table has risen to within a few feet of the surface. The river system itself is being progressively developed for irrigation and very shortly a situation will arise where the entire low winter flow will be utilised. Fresh groundwater will then be exploited to supplement the surface supplies, and at the same time a drainage system, mainly based on wells will be used to stabilise the water-table at safe depths. This paper discusses some of the methods used to ensure optimum-economic development of the fresh groundwater and describes the general design philosophy evolved by the authors firms for both irrigation and drainage wells, with respect to both well configuation and operation. Water quality standards are discussed in as much as they affect subsequent use of the groundwater. A few particular aspects are considered, including that of the values of the relevant aquifer constants, the construction of wells and the determination of screen losses. A major problem solved during the Lower Indus Project investigations has been the design of wells to-produce fresh water from layers overlying saline water. This solution is also discussed.

This report describes Bureau of Mines experiments and reviews the work of others on the exposure of coal and coal-derived products to gamma rays and some other types of radiation. Results are presented on tests of three bituminous coals and a lignite that had been pulverized to minus 200-mesh particles and exposed to 1,000 megaroentgens of gamma irradiation from spent-fuel elements of a nuclear reactor. Of about 20 chemical and physical tests in Bureau work, only mass spectrometry of gases evolved during vacuum pyrolysis of the coals to 450° C gave results indicating differences in the irradiated and unirradiated samples. Mass-spectral distribution curves for CO and CO2 evolution showed fewer irregularities (reversals of curvature) for irradiated coals; thus, mass spectrometry appears to be the most sensitive method for determining radio-induced changes in coal. It is concluded that coal is not significantly altered by gamma irradiation owing to the resistivity of its highly condensed ring structure. High-level gamma irradiation, therefore, is unlikely to prove advantageous in coal processing and utilization. Specially treated coals, because of resistivity of coal to radiation damage, may be useful as an absorbent in processing radioactive wastes.

In planning activities, the aim has been to adapt the work to changing conditions and needs of the mining industries and to avoid becoming bound to any particular type of investigation when others are found to be of more pressing interest.

In general, the work of the division is concerned with dressing nonmetallic minerals end utilizing the products there-from. Coal, salts, and waters are investigated, and the suitability of apparatus and equipment is studied.As the Metallurgical. Division of the Bureau of Mines makes routine tests of certain nonmetallic ores under prescribed conditions for the public if they are of general interest, the published reports of that division should be read and thus, with the reports of tile Nonmetals Division, the whole field may be covered."

To determine the availability of manganese for metallurgical purposes from selected world resources, the Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential production of contained manganese in concentrates based on the demonstrated resources of 23 foreign and 8 domestic mines and deposits in 9 market economy countries. All but 2 of the 23 foreign deposits are operating mines; none of the domestic deposits are in operation. The demonstrated resources of the mines and deposits used in this study represent an in situ ore resource of approximately 2.2 billion tons," containing 780 million tons of manganese with a total recoverable production potential of 514 million tons of contained manganese in concentrates. The analyses of mines and deposits in this study indicate that about 213 million tons of the contained manganese (41 pct) is potentially available at a January 1981 constant dollar long-run total cost of up to $1.50 per long ton unit (22.4 lb, or 10.15 kg contained Mn), approximately 428 million tons (83 pet) is potentially available at a cost of about $1.75 or less, and 491 million tons (95 pet) is available at less than $3.30. The remaining 23 million tons, which is potentially available at much higher costs (about $8 to $35 per unit), represents the U.S. deposits. On an annual basis, with a cost range of up to $1.75 per long ton unit, the availability from currently operating mines would last at least 80 years based on 1980 world production data. Total manganese production costs are estimated to comprise mining-8 pet, beneficiation-3 pet, transportation-26 pet, and smelting-63 pet.

A progress report is presented on a research program in which an attempt was made to develop a practical sulfide-volatilization process for recovering tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. Shaft-furnace designs and operating techniques were studied in a series of experiments in which the objective was to sulfidize cassiterite to stannous sulfide, remove the stannous sulfide by volatilization, reconvert the stannous sulfide to stannous oxide, and collect the resulting fume. A shaft furnace was developed and operated in a final test in which many of the previous difficulties were surmounted. Since the supporting funds were exhausted at this point, the project was discontinued; recommendations for further improvements in furnace design and operation were made on the basis of interpretation of experimental results obtained in shaft-furnace experiments and other related studies.
