This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. This paper has been confined to the consideration of the working of thick seams, from six feet to sixteen feet, which are pitching at about thirty degrees to the horizontal. The discussion has been limited to these set conditions because they are the ones of commonest occurrence in the Southern Alberta bituminous coal district, because, from the point of view of safety, thin seams are more easily worked, and because a discussion of all the possible combinations of thick and thin seams pitching at angles varying from zero to ninety degrees with the horizontal would involve a task impossible in the time available. It has been assumed that the mine makes gas freely and that the coal is friable and tends to make inflammable dust which is highly explosive. Since the problem requires the taking into account means of maintaining a high proportion of lump coal, it is further assumed that lump coal commands a price considerably higher than the price which can be obtained for run-of-mine or for slack coal. Figure 1, tabulating the various factors which must be considered and their relation to each other, indicates diagrammatically the complexity of the problem. Any method of working becomes divided into two distinct components, the active workings of the mine and the old abandoned workings. While these are in a measure distinct, they are nevertheless inter-related, as shown in the diagram.

Abrasives are essential to the manufacture of munitions - airplanes, gas, shells, tanks, and in fact every product that involves metal forming or finishing. An indication of the importance of abrasives in the national defense and aid-to-Britain programs is the close peace-time correlation between demand for abrasives and automobile production, which in recent years has consumed more than 35 percent of the total output of abrasives. Unprecedented demands on the abrasives industry are forecast by the rapid expansion in airplane output, tie increased mechanization of all armed forces, and the consequent speeding up not only of the factories where finished munitions are made but also of the steel mills and other factories were additional large quantities of abrasives are needed for snagging or rough-grinding semifinished products before they can be used by the fabricators. A recent survey by the artificial abrasives manufacturers indicates that they can readily increase their output 75 percent compared with the previous peak of 1937 without building new plants. By overhauling production schedules, their maximum production possible could be increased to 182 percent of the 1937 output, and the nature of the industry is such that plant capacity could be increased rapidly if need therefor should arise. No figures on the estimated requirements for abrasives in 1941 or 1942 have as yet been compiled, but the industry feels that it can meet demands as they develop.

As you are all well aware, the minerals processing industry and process industries in general are now heavily involved in reassessing their process flowsheets. The topic of concern is the little arrow in one corner of the drawing at the end of the process flow that usually says "to waste." A really startling statement might have said "to waste disposal area," which implied that there was some concern, thought, or measures taken to deal with the waste. Since 1965, the year of the Water Quality Act, many laws have been passed and agencies formed dealing with the multi-faceted area of pollution. One of these laws, the Air Quality Control Act of 1967, was the initiating force in the development of Calcilox additive to help solve the problem of sludge disposal resulting from the scrubbing of SO2 bearing gases. The intent of this paper is to focus in with a wide-angle view on a particular type of waste stream, generally an aqueous, inorganic slurry, and present the reader with an alternate approach to their disposal via Calcilox additive stabilization. Each waste stream is unique and will require different techniques to meet the design objectives. Calcilox additive is not intended to be a panacea for every slurry disposal problem, but, rather a viable alternative that should be investigated before a final waste disposal approach is chosen. This paper will summarize the development of Calcilox additive; briefly discuss stabilization; and most importantly, discuss some applications to develop a feeling for Calcilox additive stabilization. Actual dollar costs will not be presented, for each waste stream differs and the ultimate disposal mode chosen greatly influences the costs.

The preparation of a paper reporting fluorspar economics in the United States at one point in time could have been somewhat complicated be- cause of the number of producers, both large and small, that derived production from different locations throughout the Western U. S. and the Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky fluorspar districts . Companies such as Allied Chemical and William- son Mining operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, Colorado, the Colorado Fluorspar Company operated mines and mills.

Foreword Explosion hazards differ widely in the mines of different fields or coal basins. They also differ as between different mines in the same basin or fold, because of variations in gas entering the mines, and because dust conditions and explosion hazards are affected by the mining methods employed and the organization of the work. It is unquestionably true, however, that there are greater differences in explosion hazards in mines of different coal fields or basins than between different mines of the same field or basin. In these respects, the coal fields and individual mines in Alberta are not exceptional. The same conditions obtain in various countries where coal is mined, and are found in single States, as for example in Colorado, where coals are mined ranging in character from sub-bituminous to anthracite, and in attitude from flat horizontal to steeply pitching beds. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its experimental mine near Pittsburgh, Pa., has made large-scale tests of the relative explosibility of dusts of coals, ranging in rank from Wyoming sub-bituminous coal containing 19 per cent moisture, to anthracite from Pennsylvania, and including samples from a mine in the Crowsnest Pass district, B.C., and from a Vancouver Island mine. The Bureau has also made similar tests of the dust of coal from a Yorkshire mine which the British Safety-in-Mines Research Board uses as standard.

Canada's production will significantly increase in the next decade. However, although the outlook is bright, iron ore producers cannot be complacent. Instead, we must weigh the factors that have brought about the development of the Canadian iron ore industry and examine the probable changes for the next decade that will affect its growth.Looking ahead in the 1970s, competition will be severe. Pressure on prices will continue as new sources of supply bid for long-term contracts and as steel producers continue to develop mines around the world. Rising costs will make these pressures more severe. We must balance the growth of the world's steel makers with the emergence of new supplies of iron ore. The iron ore industry is now part of a new era in which demand and supply are intermeshed, and the developments around the world are acting on the Canadian iron ore industry's future."

"Synorogenic mafic intrusions are a common feature of the northern Appalachians. Two sulphide-bearing intrusions in central Maine that have been investigated revealed a number of important features that illustrate sulphide-silicate interaction that relates to magmatic sulphides. The Moxie Pluton is a large mafic intrusion emplaced during the Devonian Acadian orogeny. The Katahdin gabbro is a small mafic body that is probably genetically and temporally related to the Moxie Pluton. Both intrusions were formed bv the intrusion of variably fractionated magmas into irregular chambers and feeder zones. The southern half of the Moxie Pluton contains three small sulphide accumulations, whereas the Katahdin gabbro hosts a large, predominantly massive, sulphide body. Textural evidence clearly documents the magmatic origin of these sulphides.The three Moxie Pluton sulphide bodies are located at or very close to the intersection between the intrusion and the sulphidebearing Hildreths Formation. Sulphur assimilation, suggested by this relationship, is supported by the isotopically light (634S = —8 to —25) and the selenium-poor (S/Se - 25 000-48 000) character of the Moxie sulphides and correlation with the Hildreths Formation sulphides (S34S = —25, S/Se = 25 000-48 000). Isotopically light sulphur (534S = —20 to —21) and high S/Se ratios indicate that the majority of sulphur in the Katahdin sulphide body was also derived from an unexposed country rock source. The volume of sulphide in this example illustrates the potential efficiency of the sulphur assimilation process—so efficient in this case that marked dilution of the economic chalcophile elements resulted from the addition of so much external sulphur.The three Moxie Pluton sulphide occurrences are all impoverished in Ni and Cu (1.87-0.44% Ni; 0.72—0.32% Cu in massive sulphide), but contain normal Co contents (0.22-0.13%) relative to typical magmatic sulphides. The Katahdin sulphides show a greater Ni and Cu impoverishment (0.2% Ni; 0.1% Cu in massive sulphide) with similar Co (0.17%). The Ni content of the Moxie Pluton olivines document the fractional removal of sulphides during crystallization of the host magma, which resulted in the progressive depletion of the chalcophile metals in this magma. Modelling that involved the fractional crystallization of the magma coupled with the fractional removal of a specified proportion of sulphide has successfully duplicated the Moxie Pluton sulphide compositions. A similar magmatic model has been postulated for the Katahdin sulphides with a greater degree of sulphide fractionation. This latter model is again supported by extremely low Ni/forsterite ratios in olivines, though the compositional range is insufficient to document fractionation. These magmatic models are not unique, but they provide a relatively constrained and consistent explanation for the sulphide compositions.The Ni contents of olivines are the most important indicator of sulphide-silicate interaction in mafic magmas and have exploration potential. They provide a means of assessing the timing and extent of sulphur saturation in an intrusion and are a guide to the Ni content of a sulphide accumulation in equilibrium with olivine. In the Maine examples they provide strong evidence of the magmatic origin of the sulphide accumulations and justification for magmatic modelling."

The paper presents the history of the occurrence of spontaneous combustion in the north area, together with the associated problems. These are examined and a description is given of the methods used to combat the danger, including the use of modern scientific instrumentation. Detailed reference is made to the underground trials with pack injection and sealant coatings which were carried out at Seafield Colliery following the formation of a working group to assess the performance, in the same underground conditions, of (1) sandbagging, (2) pack injection, (3) surface coating. Based on these trials, an improved and more economical method of prevention has been established. There is, however, still scope for further improvement in techniques which would take into account the problems of gradient, transport, manpower and cost.

External trade strongly influences the well being of all nations. In the modern economic mechanism, no country is so well endowed that it has not to import commodities from others and to export its products in turn to make good its deficiencies, to rectify or improve its financial structure. From the standpoint of international commerce, Canada is strategically well placed. On the south she is bounded by the richest country in the world. On the east she faces the Atlantic, on the west the Pacific. On both coasts there are fine harbours to which lead great lines of railway that span the continent. Canada is now fifth among the exporting nations of the world. For disposal abroad, she has enormous quantities of primary commodities and substantial amounts of manufactured goods as well. But she is far from being self-sustaining. She is unusually dependent on foreign trade, not only because of the commodities she has to sell but because of the lack of many essential articles she does not or cannot produce. To Canada, external commerce is vastly more important than internal trade. The wealth of nations is decided by their ability to produce more than they need, to sell more than they buy, and to build up favourable balances resulting from trade or services. With few countries, however, are returns perennially satisfactory. Fruitful periods are followed by leaner years. In times of prosperity foreign credits are increased, monetary systems strengthened, reserves accumulated to withstand recurring days of strain. Today, the foundations of financial systems are being re-examined, "dogmas hitherto accepted as canonical are being questioned" . It is not only in Europe and America that men search for illumination in problems arising from monetary restrictions.

Efficient transportation is necessary to complement modern mechanized mining methods. The increasing trend toward high-capacity face loading equipment has demanded equally efficient haulage methods; this has been met by increasing mine-car sizes, using larger locomotives, and increasing haulage speeds, all requiring properly installed and maintained haulage roads specifically designed for this type of traffic. The recommendations and specifications included in this circular were made to point out salient factors important to the proper construction and maintenance of track haulage roads and to serve as recommended standards for track installation and maintenance. There is an increasing demand for refrigeration as mines progress deeper. Mine refrigeration plants have special requirements in terms of their duty and application. There are no national or international standards applicable for the testing of these plants. There have been numerous examples of plants failing to meet their required nominal capacity, but with the plant owner being unable to enforce the design duty on the manufacturer, due to a failure to unambiguously specify testing or accepting criteria. This paper discusses some of the reasons for performance shortcomings and describes a methodology for developing and specifying performance criteria, when inviting design and/or construction tenders, and a method of performance and acceptance testing once the plant has been built and commissioned. These guidelines encompass the full range of performance duties expected from a mine plant, including stable operation at maximum and minimum plant capacity, and under the various combinations of extremes of high and low condensing and evaporating pressures. A description of a methodology for developing a computer-based mine refrigeration plant model is also presented as part of the performance testing criteria. The methodology is illustrated with reference to the actual performance and acceptance testing process used on the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler (R67) at the Enterprise mine at Mount Isa, Australia.

Introduction If one had been called upon to describe petroleum oil refining seventy-five years ago, he could have acceded to the request quite satisfactorily in about fifteen minutes. Fifteen years ago, an hour and a half would have been sufficient to give a general idea of oil refining, and of the equipment used for this purpose. Today, so extensive has been the research into all phases of the refining and manufacturing of petroleum products, and so rapid the strides in improvement in technique and equipment, that I doubt if a week would suffice to give an adequate outline of ail the ramifications of present-day oil refining. I propose to only 'hit the high spots', dealing particularly with the equipment and methods employed at the Imperoyal refinery, which you are to visit. Crude oil, the refiner's raw material, contains essentially only two elements, hydrogen and carbon. These are not present in the free state but are combined in various proportions as 'hydrocarbons'. A given crude oil is not made up of just one hydrocarbon, but of myriads; some solid, others liquid, and still others gaseous at atmospheric temperature and pressure, ail dissolved one in the other. Moreover, the nature and the relative amounts of the several hydrocarbons vary very considerably in crude oils from different sources. That is, a 'crude' from Oklahoma will contain hydrocarbons not present in crude from Mexico, and is different again from the Venezuela crude. Not only this but oil in a certain well in, say, Peru may be differently constituted from that in a well half a mile distant from it.

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

"The JKMRC researchers have been redeveloping the suite of breakage testing techniques to more realistically align with the breakage environment in comminution equipment. Computational modelling, especially with the DEM, has highlighted the modes of impact and contact, along with the energies of these interactions in a wide range of equipment. This has driven the need to match these modes in laboratory ore characterisation tests. The objective has been to build a continuum of breakage tests and associated models that span the required range of breakage forces and environments. The ore sample is subjected to a sequence of tests covering: abrasion (surface breakage) of angular through to smoothed particles; single particle impact from high energy single impact breakage down to low energy; incremental breakage covering 60 mm down to 50 µm particles; particle strength distribution; and bed breakage over a range of compression and energy input. These tests are suited to multi-component ores with a distribution of strengths. A modelling technique is also being developed to utilise primary breakage for modelling breakage under different types of confinement. This paper draws together these techniques, previously published by the authors, into a coherent whole. The suite of tests is approaching the point where a fixed set of tests can be used to model the performance of a full range of equipment, removing the need to conduct repeat ore characterisation tests for each different piece of equipment incorporated in a circuit design. This path should open up the application of different circuit configurations and novel equipment in comminution circuit design.1 INTRODUCTION Comminution modelling utilizes a wide range of ore characterisation techniques and methods to deal with the range of comminution equipment available for production use. In general, the tests have been designed to correlate with specific pieces of equipment, using calibration factors to provide the link between the small-scale test and industrial-scale performance. The majority of tests focus on estimating the power requirement of process equipment to achieve a desired throughput and grind size. Overall, this approach has achieved acceptable outcomes in the past, but the reality is that equipment sizing suffers from considerable uncertainty, in excess of ±20% is not uncommon. This uncertainty is covered by safety margins and automatic scaling factors in equipment selection. In striving to improve reliability, the industry tends to add more adjustment factors to the tests, and design margin rather than question the basic validity of the testing process. As the tests are often correlated to production equipment via carefully guarded databases, they are also locked into historic operating inefficiency, not providing direction or revealing opportunities to improve production efficiency in comminution equipment or circuits. Safe in the knowledge that they are achieving the expected production based on test work predictions, a site is unlikely to set their sights on reducing specific energy consumption by 10%."

Reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO,, is currently the subject of extensive research. A novel strategy is put forward here, based on a biomimetic approach providing accelerated deposition into carbonate form for long-term sequestration. It offers the advantages of a process that: does not require concentration of CO, from flue gases; could potentially be used in an on-site scrubber to provide a plant-by-plant solution to reducing CO, emissions; is an environmentally benign procss with an environmentally benign product; and is based on readily available, low-cost reagents (except perhaps the catalyst).

This is due partly to the high cost of radium salts and partly to the peculiar properties of the element. Since radium-bearing ores were discovered in the United States, the interest of American scientific men has been stimulated and, at the present time, more radium is extracted and refined in this country than in all the rest of the world together. HISTORY The property of radioactivity was discovered, partly by accident, by Henri Becquerel, the French physicist, in 1896. He was experimenting with certain fluorescent substances in order to find, if possible, a connection between fluorescence and the recently discovered Y-rays. Titanium is the ninth most common element in the Earth's crust, yet only in this century has titanium come into use as an engineering material, particularly in aircraft structures, as the metal, and in pigments, as the dioxide. In this presentation, the metallurgical aspects of processing titanium-containing raw materials will be reviewed. Particular emphasis will be given to the ores and beneficiation techniques which lead to the production of titanium dioxide pigment, which accounts for over 90% of world titanium production.

Gypsum mining and processing has been one of the principal industries in Iowa for more than 75 years. For most of that period, Iowa has ranked among the five leading States in the production of crude gypsum and of calcined-gypsum products. The Fort Dodge area accounted for 11 percent of the gypsum products produced in the United States in 1956. Before 1927 the output by the major companies came from underground operations, using a room-and-pillar stoping method. At present, all production comes from quarries. The quarry methods at the various properties are similar. This paper describes the quarrying, methods employed in the district and the type of equipment used by each company. The sections on history and geology are, in part abstracts from State annual reports and an Iowa Geological Survey publication.3/
