"There mines are located in out of the way places, where timber is scarce and its price high, the problem of protecting it from fire risk is of considerable practical importance. Scarcity of timber for mining purposes is commonly met with in the more arid parts of the country, where, so, mine timbers are most likely to become dry, and inflammable, and where, therefore, the risk from fire is accentuated. Any effective and cheap method of securing adequate protection of such timber at the lowest possible cost is worthy of careful investigation. The use of magnesite cement has been suggested in this connection.The necessary qualities for any substance for the use suggested above may be summarized as follows: It should be resistant to abrasion, and to impact and structural stresses. It should be durable when subjected to the action of the elements, and stable to any minor derangements of the base on which it is placed. It must be relatively unaffected by changes in temperature, by the action of water, and should adhere to the material on which it is placed, and it should also be free from shrinkage cracks due to setting up the material, Magnesite cement appears to fulfill the various conditions outlined above.The elasticity of such cement is the outstanding quality which makes it desirable for exterior work. It also possesses the ability to adhere to all materials in a marked degree. Its freedom from expansion and contraction after setting is one of the principal reasons for its adhesive quality. It may be applied to old brick or stone walls, even tho they have been repeatedly covered with paint, and the quality of adhearing to wood makes it possible to secure a weather-proof protection to the wooden casings and trim of exterior openings. The quality of adhesion and elasticity is easily proved by applying a 1/2"" layer to a 1"" board which has been first covered with metal lath. Such a board, about 8 feet long, may be repeatedly deflected about 3"" in the center without breaking the bond to the board, or causing any cracks to appear in the magnesia cement. The ability to resist fire as well as the possession of insulating qualities are also desirable characteristics of magnesia cement stucco.Magnesite cement stucco should be applied in two coats, each 1/4"" thick on various surfaces such as wood lath, metal lath, sheathing board, brick, hollow tile, or stone; care being taken as regards the presence of lime, unless the same has been rendered, or become inert as with very old, walls. The first coat made up to a consistency that works easily under the trowel is applied in the usual manner. No water should be added to the liquid chloride as it would alter its density, and injure the work. The second or finishing coat is then applied. The aggregates are different in each, and no other dry material should be added to them as they come to the trade. The cement may be applied in zero weather without damage. Setting is quite slow under such conditions, but the cement ultimately becomes hard. It should always be applied to a dry surface excepting that under certain conditions it is desirable to apply a solution of magnesium chloride before using the stucco."

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. "Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

The twentieth century has often been spoken of as the age of petroleum, and from many viewpoints it can be justly considered so. Certainly the petroleum industry is one of enormous importance to this country, industrially, financially, and economically. The United States, however, at present producing over 60 per cent of the world's total output of petroleum, is not producing petroleum at a sufficient rate to provide for its own domestic, consumption. For several years this country has been importing increasing quantities of crude and partly refined oils from Mexico, and has been drawing heavily on domestic stocks of petroleum. Production in the United States is increasing, but it is not increasing at the same average rate as domestic consumption, nor is it probable that in the future domestic production will increase sufficiently to satisfy the demands of domestic consumption, but on the contrary, in the opinion of those best qualified to know, the peak in the curve of domestic production of crude petroleum will be reached in a comparatively few years, whereas the consumption of petroleum and its product will increase at a continually growing rate. This country, then, must turn, and as the increasing imports from Mexico indicate, is turning to other sources than the crude petroleum, produced in this country to make up the deficit between domestic production and domestic consumption of petroleum and its products,

"It is well known by all who are familiar with the oil industry in America that the oil pipe line is as fundamentally a part of this industry as the railroad is of most other American industries. The oil pipe line was first introduced about 56 years ago, and since that time has so demonstrated its superiority as a means of carrying crude oil froze the well to the refinery, that this method of transportation has largely superseded all others. This has made possible the building of refineries in or near the large consuming centers, rather than at the wells, which are usually remote from the centers of population.The pipes for conveying the oil are laid on the surface of the ground, or at a depth varying from 18 inches to 3 feet beneath the surface, and the main lines are generally eight inches in diameter. The oil is forced through the pipes by means of pumps operated either by steam or by internal combustion engines. The pump stations are located from 1 1/2 to 90 miles apart, varying with the condition of the country through which the pipe lines extend, and the viscosity of the oil to be handled.Some of the larger pipe-line systems and hundreds of miles in length. It is estimated by the U. S. Geological Survey that the total mileage of oil trunk lines in the United States today is approximately 34,000, and that the gathering systems, which are a fundamental part of the trunk systems, aggregate about 11,500 miles in length, making a total of 45,500 miles.Using those figures as a basis, some general conclusions as to the investment represented will be made. At the time most of the lines were constructed, the average cost per mile based on eight-inch pipe was about $6,500. The cost of the average pump station at that time varied from $130,000 to $250,000. The cost at the present time, on account of the increase in price of labor and materials, would be much in excess of these figures. The fixed investment in pipe lines is, therefore, very extensive. It corresponds closely with the actual cost of the property, and is estimated to be approximately $500,000,000."

"The wide publicity that is given to the discover; of new oil fields has led many people to believe that our supply of crude petroleum is practically in- exhaustible and that in order to keep pace with the demand for petroleum products, it is only necessary to drill a few more wells in some of the south-western states. It is not generally realized that, although many famous fields have been developed in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Louisiana during the past few years, the production of crude oil in 1919 was not sufficient to meet the demand and it was necessary to import approximately 53,000,000 barrels from Mexico.Continued efforts are being made to recover a larger percentage of the oil underground by improvements in methods of drilling and in handling producing properties. Improvements are also being made in methods for handling the oil after it has reached the surface which will result in reducing losses through leakage and through evaporation. These methods for cutting down waste in production and storage, if universally adopted, will no doubt result in appreciable increases in our supply of crude oil."

"The ceramic industry of the United States has a total yearly manufactured product of nearly half a billion dollars, despite large foreign importation.After careful investigation of the industry by the Bureau of Mines, it is the belief of those in charge that the usefulness of the industry can be greatly enlarged and the importations greatly lessened through the development of processes that will lead to a greater and better development of the ceramic resources of the United States. This will result in a greater industry with more men employed than ever before, and perhaps a world's supremacy in ceramic trade matters.Investigations in behalf of the ceramic industry are being made at the Bureau of Mines experiment ceramic station at Columbus, Ohio, under the supervision of R. T. Stall, superintendent, who reports a number of instances of practical, beneficial cooperation between the industry and the station during the last fiscal year.Graphite to Crucibles:Prior to 1914, practically all graphite crucibles manufactured in the United States were made from Ceylon graphite bonded with German Klingenberg clay. It was the general belief among graphite crucible manufacturers and users that good crucibles could not be made from American bond clays and graphites.Graphite crucibles were essential for melting certain alloys and special steels urgently needed for the manufacture of war materials. The demand for such metals was so great that it created an unprecedented demand for graphite crucibles.After the European war began no Klingenberg clay could be shipped out of Germany. However, it was fortunate for the cyucibly makers that they had large stocks of Klingenberg clay on hand. When the stock of Klingenberg clay became exhausted, it was necessary for the credible makers to turn their attention to American clays. There were no data or other information available to guide the crucible makers in the selection of good bond clays for their crucibles. It was necessary for them to select their clays more or less by ""guess"", which resulted in the period of service or life of graphite crucibles being shortened 15 to as much as 60 per cent."

"The recent discovery and exploitation of petroleum territory have resulted in the enactment of new petroleum laws in most of the South American Republics. The activities in the discovery of these new fields were engendered by the knowledge of the fact that present producing fields must within well defined periods be exhausted. Oil operators were willing to take the initial steps in exploitation in the absence of legislation that applied strictly to petroleum operations. The enactment of modern legislation in many of these Republics encouraging and protect¬ing exploitations may cause tremendous oil activities in these countries, and the results may be comparable with the magnitude of the undertakings and the prestige of the companies now entering this territory.These, oil fields are admirably located for convenient distribution of petroleum by water to all the Nations using oil as fuel for shipping and industrial concerns. The oil markets of the western coast of South America will derive immense benefits from the Panama Canal. This navigation route brings these markets into direct ocean shipment with the Atlantic coasts of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.One deterrent to oil production in the Republics of South America is the want of inland. transportation facilities, but the recent laws of these Republics without exception provide for acquiring rights of way for pipe lines and other modes of transportation; and doubtless the great interests and. syndicates already operating in these regions will, as production increases, provide ample pipe line transportation sufficient to convey to the coast the oil produced. It way be assumed, from the legal guarantees afforded, and from operating equipment and machinery that are now being concentrated that refineries will be erected at shipping points for the purpose of making these petroleum products accessible to the world."

"Oil-shale camps are peculiarly favored, in that before they are established it can be ascertained with a,of certainty, that the life of the project is not limited. Unlike camps at metal mines, where the metal content of a given area is frequently an unknown quantity until after years of development, oil-shale camps should, from the outset, be planned and built as permanent types of camps. Where this procedure is followed camps will be established which better serve the needs of the industry and the cost of their general care and upkeep will be less.Selection of camp or townsite.The site of the camp or town, whether on company property or not, should be selected with care. It should be separate if possible from the location of the plants of the company so as to be free from noise and fumes and so as to provide a change of environment for employees in going from their work to their homes.The principal features governing the site to be selected are as follows:Drainage. The general contour of the surrounding country should be such that drainage is away from the site. The camp or town should, if practical, be situated on higher ground than that in its immediate vicinity.Soil. The nature of the soil on which the camp or town is located may bear a decided relation to health. A porous, well under drained top soil of at least four feet in depth insures dryness and facilities the placing of foundations and the laying of water mains and sewer pipes. Such a soil also is an advantage in growing trees, shrubs and grass plots, which are a decided adjunct to making the community attractive."

"The phosphorus content of an iron ore is a determining factor as regards the value of the ore and also its metallurgical treatment. If some method of treatment, such as concentration, leaching, etc., could be used and the phosphorus con- tent of the ore reduced, it would be an important advancement in the iron mining industry towards the utilization of high phosphorus ores. Large bodies of material toe high in phosphorus to be marketable under present conditions would be made available, and a great deal of ore from the Cuyuna Range and other places, which is relatively high in phosphorus but otherwise suitable for making spiegel, could be reduced in phosphorus content sufficiently to permit its use in furnaces producing speigel.The form in which phosphorus occurs in iron ore is a much disputed question and it probably varies with the type and location of the ore. The statement has been made that ore piles on long exposure to the atmosphere often decrease in their phosphorus content. (Emmons, S.F. - Ore deposits, 1913, p. 652; Leith, C.K., Mesabi iron bearing district, U.S.G.S. Monograph 43, 1903, p. 275) There is described below experiments on the leaching of iron ores high in phosphorus, to determine whether it was economically possible to reduce the phosphorus content appreciably by leaching. As the research had a practical as well as a theoretical application, only low concentration of acids and alkalies were used.A number of variables were tried, among these being: (1) The solvent used, (2) strength of the solvent, (3) volume of solution used, (4) time ore was agitated (5) type of ore, and (6) screen size of the ore. The amount of ore taken was kept constant."

"Score of the Bureau's Investigations.There has been outlined in a previous report* the results obtained regarding the adaptability of pulverized waste slate as a filler in road asphalt mixtures. As pointed out in that report the percentage of waste at slate quarries is very high, and the Bureau of Mines has undertaken the problem of discovering new and enlarged outlets for the waste material.Many products such as paper, rubber, road asphalt, floor coverings, paints, etc., require as one of their important constituents a considerable percentage of finely pulverized inert mineral matter to give ""body"", to obtain the desired consistency, or to supply the necessary wearing or other qualities demanded. Such materials are known as ""fillers"". The possibility that slate flour might be used as a filler with advantage in several products other than road asphalt led the Bureau to undertake further investigation.The Importance of Discovering Advantageous UsesIt has been found that in some products slate may be substituted for materials now in use without any marked effect on the quality of the products. A wider use of slate in such products could result only from a definite price advantage as compared with other fillers. Mile it is probable that waste slate may be placed on the market at prices which will encourage its wider use, it is evident that a waste slate utilization industry can never attain sufficient magnitude to definitely assist the slate producers unless it is demonstrated that some definite advantage in quality may be gained when slate is substituted for fillers now in use. The main purpose kept in view throughout the inquiry has been, therefore, to find advantageous uses for waste slate in order that both producer and consumer may be benefited."

Silica , or silicon dioxide , ( Si0, ) , occurs in a free state chiefly as quartz , but hydrous silica ( amorphous silica carrying a variable amount of combined water , 2 to 13 per cent ) , occurs as opal , flint , diatomaceous earth , tripoli and so on . Quartz is found in many forms , the most important of which are ; As vein quartz; quartzite ; sandstone ; silica sand and gravel ; as crystals or crystalline grains , masses or aggregates in igneous rocks such as granites , dicrites and pegmatites . Commercially silica is used in many ways , but ordinary uses of sand and gravel are so well known that they will not be considered here .

The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

So far as is known , there is no complete bibliography on sampling, therefore , this one should be of value . In it are nearly eleven hundred references , some dating back 30 years , on sampling at mines , mills , smelters , power plants , pumping stations and refineries . For convenience , there are included a few references to methods for sampling such materials as leather belting in mills , salt impregnated soils , and mine waters . All the important technical journals , - including some in foreign countries- and engineering society publications , also mining and metallurgical text - books , have been studied for anything concerning sampling , and while it is not claimed that every important reference has been listed , the bibliography is fairly complete . The arrangement is alphabetical by authors ' names , and the references are numbered serially in the crder that they appear in the bibliography . Anonyous references are listed under the name of the journal in which they appear , and are numbered like the references bearing an author's name . Patents are grouped in their numerical order , without index nu.bers . Under the heading , " U.S. Bureau of Mines Publications " , are listed all publications of the bureau that deal with sampling . While the serial number is omitted , these same references , of course , have serial numbers where they appear in the list arranged alphabetically by authors .

During the course of the cooperative smoke abatement investigation carried on by the Bureau of Mines , the city of Salt Lake and the University of Utah during 1919-1920 , a study was made as to the suitability of Utah coals for by-product coking with particular reference to low temperature coking . was done because it was realized that a smokeless fuel for domestic consumers was the best remedy for this class of smoke producer . A report of the technical side of the work was included in the final report of the cooperative investiga- Since this report was written (June 1 , 1920) further work has been done by other investigators .

Garnets are usually found well crystallized in the cubic system , the principal forms being rhombic dodecahedrons , tetragonal trisoctahedrons or combinations of the two , and hexoctahedrons . They also occur as rounded disseminated glassy grains and in compact massive , laminated or gramlar aggregates . They vary greatly in color , but the most common garnets , almandite and andradite , are most often found of a dark red or reddish brown color .

In response to numerous requests from metallurgists and operators for information regarding the status of the sulphur dioxide leaching process , developed at the Southwest experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , Tucson , Ariz . , the following statement has been prepared . A more complete report is now in course of publication and will appear as Technical Paper 312. This process was devised to provide a cheap and efficient method for treating the so- called "porphyry " copper ores of the Southwest which generally contain both " sulphide " and "nonsulphide " copper minerals , mixed in such proportions that they can only be satisfactorily treated by a method which will concurrently recover both the sulphide copper and the nonsulphide copper . The latter term has been adopted to include all the minerals commonly referred to in operating phraseology in the mills of the Southwest as " oxidized" , " oxide " , or " soluble " copper . confident that the sulphide dioxide leaching process , as developed by us with the cooperation of the Miami Copper Co. and the Arizona Copper Co. , is suitable and commercially available for a wide range of ores .

The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the deterioration of Portland cement during storage and transportation , and to discover a means of preventing it . All available printed sources of information on this subject have been examined and a bibliography has been compiled . The subject has also been discussed with the leaders in the cement industry ; the present report is the result of their cooperation , and is based principally on information thus obtained . Deterioration of Portland cement during storage over any considerable period of time has long been noted ; closely related to it is deterioration of cement during transportation, which involves not only the time factor of storage but also exposure to varied climatic conditions . Deterioration in both cases is due to hydration of the cement by absorption of moisture from a humid atmosphere , or by exposure to actual rain-fall . After hydration cement possesses no cohesive power ; the degree of deterioration is directly proportional to the degree of hydration . The amount of deterioration of Portland cement during storage has been accurately determined in an investigation by the Structural Materials Research Laboratory , in cooperation with the Portland Cement Association . Cement stored in a shed in cloth sacks retained 80 per cent of its original strength after three months storage ; 71 per cent after six months ; 61 per cent after one year ; and 40 per cent after two years . The deterioration of Portland cement during storage and transportation was noted particularly in France during the World War . Information concerning cement used by the American Expeditionary Forces was furnished by Lt. Col. H. S. Spackman and Major E. C. Eckel , U. S. R. , who had charge of practically all matters concerning cement used by the A. E. F. The cement used by the A. E. F. came from the following sources : 42,000 tons was French , Swiss , and Spanish cements ; 120,000 tons was English cement ; 55,000 tons made in plants operated by the A.E.F .; 500 tons ( Not over) from America . Deterioration was most marked in cement from the first source .
