Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author's methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

Discussion of the paper of R. J. COLONY, presented at the New York Meeting, February, 1921, and issued With MINING AND METALLURGY No. 169, January, 1921. R. J. COLONY (author's reply to discussion).-The work of Sosman and Merwin on the system lime-ferric oxide, mentioned by Mr. Rankin, was not overlooked. When studying portland cements and portland-cement clinkers petrographically, however, the lime-iron compound was difficult to correlate with the very definite dicalcium ferrite described by those investigators, which possesses such well-defined optical properties. In portland cements, the calcium ferrite (or ferrate?) is an indefinite, fuzzy, and generally amorphous, or apparently amorphous substance that is distributed interstitially with respect to the other grains, from which it was very difficult to derive any satisfactory results. For this reason, the writer, tentatively, chose to regard it as related to the aluminate, and assigned to it the composition 3CaO.Fe203, which may be incorrect, however, as Mr. Rankin suggests.

The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, is the raw material for the Rana Mines which is a division of the state owned steel mill A/S Norsk Jernverk. Activities for the exploitation of the orebodies were commenced in 1902 by the English Dunderland Iron Ore Company. During its operating period the company constructed a total of two large scale concentrating plants. The activities were strongly marked by technical problems and labor disputes. Thus actual production was limited to the years 1904-1908, 1928-1931 and 1937-1939. During these periods a total of 1.9 million tons of crude ore was mined and 0.6 million tons of concentrates produced for export. The present plant commenced operations in late fall of 1964. Up to and including 1976 about 26.6 million tons of crude have been put through the concentrating plant and about 10.7 million tons of concentrate produced.

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

South African underground hard rock mines are typically managed using measurements made daily, weekly or even monthly of key parameters such as face advance, readiness to blast, blast success, temperature or dust levels. Health, safety and productivity can all be greatly improved if a real-time measurement system can inform decision making. To enable this vision of widespread sensing, communication and decision support, CSIR has developed an open standard architecture for communication of sensor data, and a reference implementation using that standard. The standard, called AziSA, meaning ?to inform? in isiZulu, will allow any device that complies with it to join any network that supports it. The standard is designed for South African gold and platinum mines. To be practical in a typical Bushveld platinum mine, a real-time sensor system needs to be robust, reliable and cheap: ?Sensors are equipped with power sources that will last as long as the sensor is required. In effect, sensors need to be disposable: cheap enough not to warrant repair if they break. ?Communication in the stope is wireless, to avoid there liability problems associated with wire connections. For example, wires to sensors in the face area are unlikely to survive blasting. ?To get information out of the stope, the power line to the scraper winch is used as a communications link. Unlike a separate communications link, the power line will be repaired if damaged, because of its importance to production. ?Outside the stope, communications are transferred onto the mine communication infrastructure. To succeed as a management system, the next key element is the use of software decision support tools that will analyse masses of real-time data to extract key parameters and trends for decision makers. A range of sensors has been developed, including commercial sensors that have had wireless adapters added to make them AziSA compliant, and bespoke sensors that provide low cost sensing of typical mining parameters. An important parameter in any sensor network is the location of the sensor. This has to be easy and cheap to establish, so a tool has been developed to locate sensors in the confines of a stope, using ultrasonic and radio techniques. Once sensors are installed and located, they associate their location to all data that they produce. All the data from the system are captured at surface in a flexible database that can be queried by any application that requires data of any kind. It is simple to program alerts, and for actions to be associated with alerts. The use of wireless in stope also allows for communication from surface to the stope, or from stope to stope. The first implementation of an AziSA compliant system is being installed as part of the Mine Health and Safety Council funded rockfall elimination project. The design is discussed, and a future application for a platinum mine is considered.

This paper highlights the strong safety and progressive engineering cultures th at existed and continues within the company. A long-term view of the business coupled with proven professionalism is amply developed. Quite dearly, to revert to private ownership is not a return to Victorian values but ‘back to the future’.

There have been enormous changes in mineral processing in the past four decades. For example grinding mill power has increased by an order of magnitude, regrinding is done to -10 microns and flotation machines are 100 times bigger. Operating staff have unprecedented opportunities for online monitoring and performance control of mineral processing plants. Sophisticated instruments can provide a plethora of data characterising the mineralogy and surfaces of particles. Digital computers allow complex calculations on huge amounts of data including modelling and simulation of machine and plant performance. However, all these changes have not necessarily lead to better metallurgical results. An analogy can be drawn with the thoroughbred racing industry in Australia. Significant advances in scientific knowledge in animal genetics, physiology, biomechanics and nutrition applied to the business have resulted in only a two per cent reduction in winning times for the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup since the 1920s. A critical look at some mineral processing metrics suggests similar failures to improve performance despite putting in more resources. In fact certain parameters such as operating times and plant start-up performance are considered to have remained static or even deteriorated. There has been an emphasis on 'process' at the expense of 'outcomes'. The industry's strength has been in finding technical (or 'hardware') solutions while its weakness has been at the people end of the business in maximising and consolidating the gains from the technologies. Some trends in plant design over these years have exacerbated the apparent deskilling of operating and technical staff. Despite unparalleled options for communications, some staff are embarrassingly uninformed about technical developments in their fields. The 'boom and bust' cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operations, raise serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector. This paper by two experienced mineral processing engineers, with contributions from other senior practitioners, reviews these trends. While there may be an element of 'the older we are, the better we were', it is an attempt to identify the issues and propose solutions.

THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Of late years the young men of this country who have wished to enter our profession have had great facilities offered to them for so doing ; there have been undoubtedly great improvements in the methods of instruction; and although I am very far from imagining that no further progress can be made, or is demanded, yet I feel sure that

Some time ago the writer needed a cheap, light, and portable hydraulic lift or crane, that would be universal in its application, and that might .be suspended from crane-arms, overhead tramways, beams, etc., and serve all the uses of ordinary hydraulic cranes. This was accomplished by the use of a closed cylinder of wroughtiron hydraulic pipe, provided at its top with the ordinary gland and stuffing-box, through the centre of which passed another similar pipe of slightly smaller diameter, forming in effect the ordinary plunger of the regular hydraulic crane. Over the top of this centre pipe or plunger or piston a disk of iron is placed with two arms projecting several inches from the rim, as may be required. Through these arms long iron rods pass, one on each side, and are fastened in place by nuts screwed to a bearing immediately above and below the disk. These rods also pass through the enlarged head of the lift down through a casting which closes the bottom of the cylinder, which, at the same time, gives them a bearing, and they terminate at a point below the casting equal to the height of the lift of the crane. The rods at this point pass through a disk similar to the top disk and are similarly secured in place. A common hook arranged with a swivel passes through the centre of the disk, and on this hook the load is suspended. For a stationary hanging crane the apparatus is suspended by two rods passing through the head of the lift in similar manner to the two already described, at right' angles to the first, and of sufficient length to let the first set play between them and rise to the full height which the plunger will allow. The second set of rods terminates in an iron disk similar to the one at the bottom of the first set, and a hook through this in turn suspends the entire apparatus. In order to adapt the lift to an overhead tramway, single or double, in place of the suspending rods, a projection or offset is arranged on each side of the head of the lift and a journal cast in, allowing the lift to be suspended on pivots arranged as follows:

It is now five years since I called the attention of the Institute to the industrial importance of the coal and the iron ores of the Hocking Valley in Southeastern Ohio, and in a pamphlet on the region published soon after, in 1874, endeavored to resume the principal facts then known respecting it, including the observations of the geological survey of Ohio, made and published up to the time by Professors Andrews and Wormley, together with an estimate of the probable future of the region, and its relations to the coal and iron markets of the country. Since that time the labors of the Geological Survey have included a further study of the coal by Prof. Edward Orton, the results of which will be awaited with much interest. I may say from my knowledge of them, that while confirming the general conclusions of his predecessors, he has been enabled to add much to our knowledge as regards the correlation of the various members in different parts of the coal-field; and to show more clearly the positions and the importance of the ore-beds in the Hocking Valley region. The only ore mined in that vicinity previous to 1874, was below what is called the Great Vein or No. VI coal, and to the west of what is known as the Hocking Valley coal-field, and although experiments in a few furnaces in the State had shown that this coal could be used with advantage in iron-smelting there was not a single blast furnace within the field. My observations at that time, however, impressed me with the abundance of iron ore, not only below but above this important coal seam, and I then ventured to express the opinion that this region, from its cheap and easily mined smelting-coal, its native ores and limestones, and its geographical position and relations to the great markets of the West, and to the supply of rich iron-ores from Lake Superior, was destined at no distant time to become a great metallurgical centre, where iron could be made more cheaply than at any other equally accessible point in the country. The object of the present communication is to report progress, and to state how far my observations made in the region 1st month have justified the predictions of 1874. The five years which have elapsed have been, as all know, most unfavorable to the iron trade, and especially to new enterprises in untried regions, yet they have not passed without important industrial developments in the Hocking Valley, where not less than thirteen blast furnaces have been erected

ThE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydro-thern~ally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CeMent and Concrete Linings During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, howcver, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 11\2 pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with 12 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concretc and precast blocks. THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. Planning for a project does not start with the announcement of the approval for a project. Planning actually begins when the project is only a prospect and it involves the years of experience of many people because their expertise influences the final decisions. In partial anticipation of the Pinto Valley project, as well as a search for improvement in the Copper Cities operation, two projects were undertaken. The first project was to substitute one 26" cyclone for three 20? cyclones in the single stage grinding circuit. The second project was to replace the Hunt air flotation cells with 300 cubic foot mechanical cells. The 300 cubic foot cells were just being introduced, consequently two types of cells were selected for testing. The results from both projects influenced the decisions on equipment for the Pinto Valley project.

RECENT events have emphasized with renewed force the well known fact that war greatly intensifies the demand for certain metals, particularly for iron, copper, and zinc. Any increase in the use of iron and steel, whether in war or peace, is also accompanied by increased consumption of those metals which find their chief application as ferro-alloys, such as nickel, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. Further, since high temperatures are essential for the production of all these metals, activity in the metal industry is inevitably accompanied by an insistent demand for refractories. For example, in North American practice the consumption of magnesitic hearth refractories is frequently expressed in pounds per ton of steel. This quantity (not including straight dolomite) ranges on individual plants from about 7 to 12 pounds. When the industry is operating at approximately full capacity, the ratio of refractory to steel tends to increase, since the tonnage of steel produced is recognized as of paramount importance, and this leads to the harder driving of furnaces and less regard for the effect on refractories. It should also be observed that the cost of refractories per ton of metal produced is always so low, in comparison with other items, that it may even increase while the cost of metal per ton is being reduced through more continuous operation and the use of higher temperatures. As one prominent Canadian copper metallurgist has tersely expressed it, he is "not in business to save refractories but to smelt ore". The effect of war demands and of general industrial activity upon the production of basic and neutral refractories is clearly shown in Figure 1, which gives the value of chrome ore and magnesitic-dolomite produced in Canada during the period 1907 to 1937. Tonnages have not been shown, as these are not available for the full period; such figures as have been published from time to time are not strictly comparable, since both raw rock and finished products have on occasion been included. The preliminary figures for 1938, which are now available, have been prepared by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on a different basis from those immediately preceding, and have therefore not been shown.

"This paper investigated a new desulfurizer, dolomite and ferrosilicon. Magnesium vapor produced by silicothermic reduction of dolomite and ferrosilicon in an immersion tube of molten iron was injected into the molten iron by carrier gas through the underpunch of the tube and desulfurization reaction occurred. In order to explore the desulfurization process of molten iron by the new desulfurizer, the thermodynamics, and experiments of magnesium vapor production and desulfurization have been studied. Through thermodynamic calculation, the reaction temperature of magnesium vapor production by 75ferrosilicon and light-burned dolomite is 1838K in the standard state and decreased with the decreasing partial pressure of magnesium vapor, PMg· When PMg=25kPa, the reaction happens at 1673K. From experiments of magnesium vapor production, reduction efficiency of Mg vapor is about 60 % in 15 minutes at 1673K. From hot metal experiments, the desulfurization efficiency is 89.35%, and the lowest sulfur concentration after desulfurization is 46ppm.IntroductionPretreatment desulfurization of hot metal has become a necessary step in modem optimizing steelmaking process for its cheap cost, which can not only liberate of blast furnace productivity and reduce the burden of produce steel, but also effectively improve overall economic efficiency of the iron and steel system[l-ZJ_ At present, injection magnesium particle is one of the two main methods of desulphurization in hot metal owing to its strong affinity for sulphur, low amount of slag produced, low iron loss in slag skimming and low equipment investment[3l. However, there are still some insufficiencies on the hot iron pretreatment with magnesium particles at present[4-5l"
