A shortage of landfill space and growing environmental concerns in Mexico are renewing interest in the recyclability of scrap from automobiles. This work describes a pyroumetallurgical process for the recovery of metallic lead from waste lead paste. Argentopyrite concentrate is commingled with lead paste residue and smelted in a fuming process thereby transferring the precious metals into lead bullion. The process consists of smelting lead paste and argentopyrite, sodium carbonate, and metallic iron at smelting temperatures of about 1100 T. The reaction products are slag and molten lead bullion enriched with precious metals. A major feature of this process is the removal of precious metals from the bullion by means of zinc, whereby a silver-zinc intermetallic compound is formed and floats out of the lead. The recoveries of precious metals are about 98%.

At the 1980 TMS-AIME world symposium, Dr. Davey mentioned that the traditional lead blast furnace is now being challenged by direct smelting processes. In the copper smelting field both the blast furnace and reverberatory furnace are also disappearing in favour of direct smelting processes such as Outokumpu flash smelting, Mitsubishi continuous smelting, Noranda furnace, Inco furnace and so on. Those new processes all have the following in common: (1) High degree of mechanization (2) Metallurgical reactions carried out in closed vessels (3) Application of oxygen and/or oxygen enriched air (4) Minimization of handling materials and gaseous volume (5) Minimum energy requirements (6) Removal of workers from near the furnace (7) Reduction of emissions of harmful gas to meet environmental regulations. (8) Improvement to the work place environment to avoid occupational hygiene hazards. Direct and continuous smelting of powdered concentrate in one vessel was a romance of the metallurgist since early times. However as mentioned above, in the copper field this objective is being achieved in practice. The industry however can't deny that the serious and severe regulation of environmental pollution in every country was the prime motive for the modernization of smelters. In early days, to meet regulations, it was anticipated that many economic difficulties such as higher capital and energy costs and extravagant use of resources and waste disposal would be the result. "Turn a misfortune into a blessing" is an old saying which reveals the current thinking and reacent developments in the nonferrous industries. In the last ten years in the lead smelting field, about two decades later than copper, commercial scale smelting using new furnance technology has started. The KIVCET process and QSL process, which is flash smelting and bath smelting respectively, are becoming major competitors. They will be sure to upgrade their processes to remain economically and environmentally viable in the comming decade.

THIS paper is not intended to be a detailed description of the lead, smelting plant at Cockle Creek, as this has been covered in previous papers for the Institute in 1918, Proceedings No. 31, by other members of the staff; but the idea is to give some of the practices and conditions peculiar to these works, also to give some experiments carried out and the conclusions arrived at. Unfortunately, owing to the closing down of the smelting and refinery plant at these works, sone of the experiments could not be carried to a more definite and commercial basis, but they are given in the hope that they may be of interest to members, and may perhaps suggest further thought along the lines indicated.ROASTING AND SINTERINGThe greater part of the ore treated at these works came from the Central mine, Broken Hill, but, in addition, a large quantity was purchased from other parts of New South Wales and from Tasmania. LEAD POISONING as a result of eating lead pellets deposited in marsh areas is a cause of high mortality among ducks, geese, and other waterfowl ingested lead shot become trapped in the gizzard with gravel and are slowly ground away by the grit. Absorption of lead as it passes through the intestine in a finely divided state produces severe lead poisoning which is usually fatal. Ducks and geese with lead poisoning develop first a typical green diarrhea. Later, paralysis of the wing muscles prevents flight. As the poisoning continues with further grinding of the shot trapped in the gizzard, increasing paralysis reduces the bird to helpless-

You should by now have acquired something of the engineering point of view, the open skeptical mind. the power to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions, form theories and test these by further experiment, and weigh the inherent probability of conclusions drawn by others. I am asking you today to consider certain facts and the conclusions I am drawing from those facts.

Airborne geophysics and geomatics is at a crossroads as to whether it remains a viable mapping tool, both technically and commercially, and broadens its potential for new applications (eg environmental monitoring, civil engineering and precision farming). The use of small and stable multisensor aerial platforms to conduct highly flexible surveys flown at a low/reasonable cost of operation is a recurrent wish of many stakeholders in the natural resources exploration and mining industry. Through its Fly Light Airborne Geophysics research program, EXIGE and partners have pushed the development and testing of two new airborne carriers with unique capabilities for geo-surveys: GyroLAG’s gyrocopter and Infotron’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). These carriers are the next generation of versatile and innovative aerial vehicles for remote sensing and monitoring. They are rotary, smart tailored, ultra-high resolution manned (gyrocopter) or autonomous (UAV) airborne platforms that combine the merits of dense data sampling, accurate position location, very low clearance above ground or sea level, slow speed, interchangeable and combined multiple geo-sensors, automatic data quality control and real-time quality assurance. They also have the benefits of being highly efficient, cost-effective, commercially attractive, safe, reliable and easy to deploy and operate. Their technical specifications and multiple advantages compared to traditional aircraft and/or ground crews are presented in this paper. CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

Lignite reserves occur all over the world in different climatic regions. This means, that the impact of the hydrologic regime upon mining activities and, vice versa, of the mining activities upon ground and surface water conditions will be different between any two mines. On the other hand, most economically important lignite deposits can be grouped according to principal depositional and structural features described briefly in the following section. These features do allow a preliminary assessments of the nature of ground water problems which may face the mine. The cost of protection against water which threatens a mine, the environmental impact of the appropriate measures to achieve this end and the restraints of population density which both might exclude the most cost-effective approach will govern the project expenditure for drainage work. Whether or not this expenditure can be borne by the project must be established during the feasi¬bility phases of mine planning. So, the somewhat provoking title of this paper does not mean that its question can be answered once for ever. It should rather serve to bring to the attention of the audience the major features of mine water control.

A major aspect in competitive ironmaking is to replace metallurgical coke by injecting alternative cheap fuels. Whereas in the past, heavy oil injection as well as on a lower scale natural gas injection have proved to be reliable, the progressing high price level of these fuels has prompted international interest in looking for alternative cheaper fuels, especially pulverized coal. Theoretical analysis and practical operations showed that for constant adiabatic flame temperature, potentially more coke may be replaced by injected coal than by heavy oil, because of less endothermic cracking of hydrogen components. Since about 1974, the ARBED-Group has been looking for alternative fuels and in 1976 came to conclusion to select for first trials pulverized lignite for the following reasons:

Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

THERE are many varieties of limestone, but for the general purposes of the pulp and paper industry, two classifications are sufficient: (1) High-calcium stone, which should be quite free from impurities and contain not less then 90 per cent calcium carbonate. (2) High-magnesium stone, containing not less than 25 per cent of magnesium carbonate. Before proceeding with detail on the use of limestone and lime in the industry, a few words regarding the pulp products made in Canada are desirable. By far the largest tonnage is made by grinding spruce and balsam logs on rotating sandstones or on artificial abrasive stones of the Norton or Carborundum types. This mechanical or groundwood pulp finds its largest use in the production of newsprint paper, of which it comprises about 80 per cent of the total fibrous substance employed-the remaining 20 per cent being unbleached sulphite pulp. No limestone or lime is directly employed in making groundwood pulp, as contrasted with the chemically prepared pulps, all of which require one or the other form of the base for their processing. Sulphite pulps comprise the next largest tonnage group. They are produced by boiling, under pressure and at elevated temperatures, spruce and balsam wood in chip form in solutions of bisulphites and sulphurous acid. The usual bisulphites employed are those of calcium and magnesium. Sodium, potassium, and ammonium bisulphites give progressively better pulps, but to date, in the absence of efficient recovery methods, cost has precluded their use.

The cave man of ages past took his wife-and family from the cave pointing to a fire he had built and beating on his breast said, "Look what I have done". Today man is taking his family back to a cave saying, "Come enter in because of what I have done". At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

The major heavy industrial consumers of limestone are the cement, lime'and steel ind- ustries. Each of these requires large quantities of cheap raw material. Other ind- ustries such as glass and chemical manufactur- ing are significant consumers and agricultur- al and constructional activities provide additional demand which is usually more local in its occurrence. Limestone is widely dis- tributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport con- siderations render most deposits of no economic value. Among deposits which are sufficiently close to the major metropolitan markets many must be rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major.develop- ment, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. The major producing locations are sit- uated in a variety of geological environments. Most have limited reserves and require partic- ular attention to quality control. Planned extraction programmes based on detailed geo- logical investigations enable not only satis- factory grade control but also permit, by the adoption of appropriate quarry procedures, the use of sub-grade material, thus optimis- ing utilisation of the available reserves.

The objective of this work is to investigate the inadequacies of current CFD based methodologies of model development for predicting combustion behavior of pulverized coal in furnaces. In the present paper, a steady state CFD model was used for in-depth analysis of pulverized coal combustion. The model accounts for turbulence, coal combustion, convective and radiative heat transfer and motion of coal particles. It also uses coal combustion models to account for important processes such as devolatilization, combustion of char and the evolution of fuel nitrogen during coal combustion. The model predicts fluid flow, heat transfer, progress of combustion and pollutant formation (NOx, etc.). The model uses several parameters, which need to be tuned with experimental data, which is not only limited in quantity but also insufficient in detail. Various existing methodologies like part calibration method for tuning of the parameters are discussed. In the present work, the parameters associated with coal combustion models were tuned and validated with published data obtained from an experimental furnace using one such part calibration methodology. The results clearly show that the model predictions differed with the experimental data not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. These discrepancies were attributed to part calibration methodology. A detailed parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the importance of parameters from various classes, namely, combustion kinetics, heat transfer, process and geometry parameters, and CFD model parameters. This investigation clearly indicates that parameters from different classes have significant effect on combustion behavior. The discrepancies in current methodology are discussed and a need for comprehensive methodology is highlighted. This report presents the results of a synthesis on the design and analysis of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. The synthesis included an industry survey concerning the practice of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. Participation in the survey was solicited by advertisements in several trade magazines and by e-mail for the DFI membership. The survey participants numbered 150. Their professional roles include consulting engineers, specialty contractors, design engineers, government engineers, and academicians. They represent a variety of geographical areas including North/Central/South America, United Kingdom, Middle East, Caribbean, Hawaii, Japan, India, Egypt, France, Australia and New Zealand. Upon completion of the survey, several professionals in the field of liquefaction and ground improvement were interviewed for them to elaborate on the survey results. The interviews are included in the Appendix of this report. Financial support for the project was provided by DFI and Dan Brown and Associates PC. The concept of the liquefaction mitigation synthesis was developed by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee in recognition that: (a) The results of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance have challenged previously longheld beliefs about liquefaction and associated mitigation techniques, and; (b) The DFI membership and the engineering/construction industry are interested to know if and how engineers and designers are subsequently adjusting their practice in consideration of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance. For more detailed information on recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance, presentations are available from the State-of-the-Art Forum: Liquefaction Consequences and Mitigation that was held in St. Louis in 2012. A commentary of the state-of-practice in ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation (prepared by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee) is included in this issue of the DFI Journal. CERTAIN local conditions were known to govern in large measure the successful adaptation of liquid-oxygen explosives to the large-scale blasting at Chuquicamata. The wide variation in hardness of the rock at this mine makes necessary the use of several types of explosives. A locally manufactured, relatively cheap black powder is used in blasting the softer waste and capping material, where a thorough displacement breaks the ground sufficiently. Before the introduction of L. 0. X., an ammonia dynamite of about 65 per cent. strength was being used exclusively in the harder underlying orebody, where a strong disruptive as well as a displacement effect is required for breaking the ore. The L. 0. X., as developed for quarry work in the United States, has a practically pure carbon cartridge material, and the explosive has an extremely high rate of detonation, which should therefore cause it to usefully develop its full disruptive effect in hard ground. The individual blasts at Chuquicamata are large, black-powder shots which dislodge masses of rock averaging 250,000 tons each, and dynamite shots which dislodge masses averaging 80,000 tons each. It was desirable, therefore, to attempt to displace with L. 0. X. the faster, higher-cost ammonia dynamite used in the smaller blasts. It was not considered practical to attempt to displace the low-cost black powder with L. 0. X., as estimated costs showed no probable saving if this were accomplished. Since it was desirable to continue shooting relatively large blasts for effective operation, it was recognized that larger storage facilities than had been in use would be needed for the liquid oxygen. Because of the difficulty of transporting and discharging large storage containers of efficient design, the better plan appeared to be storage and discharge of the liquid at the place of manufacture, and transportation of the filled soaking boxes to the blast.

The paper will explain how to successfully implement a robotic solution from the initial idea to a working industrial solution. Primetals Technologies can call upon 10 years of experience in installation of Robot solutions in the harsh environment of steelmaking plants - the so-called LiquiRob. To enhance an existing shroud manipulation system, the idea to connect the shroud with a bayonet mechanism to the ladle nozzle was born in accordance with the requirements of a well-known steel producer. The paper will describe the development steps from the first simulations and prototype testing in the laboratory, it will show the intensive system testing under workshop conditions and will finally depict the successful integration into the plant. Furthermore, operational experience will be shown as well as the advantages of such an installation compared to other shroud manipulation systems.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications.
