CENTRALLY located with relation to the largest iron- and steel-producing districts of the United States, the fluorspar-deposits of Kentucky possess increasing interest and importance. As typical of the numerous fluorspar-mines of Kentucky and Illinois, I have selected for description the Memphis., because it and others of its immediate group exhibit the conditions characteristic of all. I. THE MEMPHIS MINE. This mine lies 5 miles NW. of Marion, in Crittenden county, Kentucky, a station on the Chicago and Nashville division of the Illinois Central R. R. For the first mile and a half out of Marion we see only Birdsville or Middle Chester sandstones of Mississippian age. Then we cross a fault of some 350 ft. displacement, and the Ste. Genevieve oolite sets in. Beyond the fault, oolite is the predominant rock, except that the bills to the north have a capping of Cypress or lowest Chester sandstone, 80 ft. below which is an outcrop of from 6 to 10 ft. of Ste. Genevieve (Rosiclare) sandstone. Occasional sink-holes are noticed, and as the mines are approached evidence of faulting is again seen.. A line of crude head-frames and open-cut dumps, extending for more than a quarter of a mile, marks the Klondike vein. The open-cuts are from 15 to 20 ft. deep, and in most of them, from the surface down, was found the reddish gravel which is really fluorspar-some of it white or purple and crystal-clear (if the red clay is washed off), and some carrying iron and silica, and stained by waters from the decaying limestone walls. In one of these cuts, at a depth of 20 ft., white and purplish honey-combed fluorspar was found, in which the larger cavities are due to limestone and calcite leaching, and the minute ones to the leaching of zinc-blende.

"Bench-scale flotation tests play a major role in the geometallurgical process value chain. Despite their apparent simplicity, these tests pose pitfalls in terms of operation, as well as the interpretation and modelling of results. In this paper we highlight key aspects to consider in generating accurate and reproducible experimental results, and critically review some assumptions relating to the estimation of entrainment and froth recovery. We subsequently focus on first-order equations to model kinetics and propose a method that accounts more realistically for the decay in kinetics over the duration of a float, and the contributions of froth stability and hence mass pull. The method was applied to three case studies on platinum group metal (PGM) ores and matched or outperformed first-order, two-component models. Also, it allows for a deeper analysis of the integrity of the bench-scale flotation results. IntroductionGeometallurgy is a structured, multidisciplinary approach that integrates key data from the geological, mining, mineralogical, and metallurgical aspects of the value chain to construct spatial models of an ore deposit such that the overall economic benefit and sustainability of an operation can be optimized. Process geometallurgy is aimed primarily at enhancing metallurgical efficiency and plant throughput by the application of appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as supporting production planning and operational strategies to reduce the impact of highly variable ores. With flotation being the dominant concentrating process in the mineral value chain, the bench-scale flotation test is an important characterization tool – a relatively cheap, simple, and rapid way to obtain key information about the ore and its amenability to economic extraction of valuable minerals. This includes the evaluation of different ore types and the implications of mineralogical composition and texture for comminution and floatability, the effect of the grinding environment on the liberation of minerals, the electrochemical environment in the pulp (Bradshaw et al., 2006), the screening of reagents to improve floatability (Ekmekci et al., 2003), and the role of hydrodynamics in the recovery of valuables and the entrainment of gangue (Amini et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016). It is also a critical tool in auditing the performance of a flotation plant by hot floats, paving the way for concept and feasibility studies and providing essential data on kinetics for the purposes of scale-up, optimization, and simulation of flotation circuits."

DR. BANOWSKY: Thank you very much. That was the shortest introduction that I have had lately, and I didn't have time to get my coat on. But I appreciated it, and I'm delighted to be here with an industry with which 1 feel strong affinity. At the University of Oklahoma we have an energy history. We are a little more currently involved in oil and gas, and those of you who know the history of our state would be aware we have an early coal development back really before the turn of the century in the southeast part of our state what we call Little Dixie. How many of you have spent anytime in Oklahoma or are from the state of Oklahoma? I'm not going to ask how many are from OSU or the University of Colorado. We did send you a football coach here from Oklahoma, and 1 see you have exchanged him. Several of you were only interested in the lobby in asking about our football team this year. 1 would like to go somewhere where we can talk about something besides football. I'm just trying to build a University that our football team can be proud of. We're going to be strong again. 1 can assure you. We've got the best football team money can buy. It's not quite as bad as the college president who called the coach in and said, "Coach we're in trouble, you're losing games and the alumni is very unhappy." "What can we do?" the president asked. The coach said, "Well the football team is flunking the admissions test. We can't get them in with the standard achievement and SAT tests." The president said, "What can we do?" The coach said, "Well the coaching staff has substituted for the American College Test the simple fill in the blank questionnaire." The president said, "Let's use it. We have got to get the team in." The first question was, Old MacDonald had a (-). And a couple of the big tackles were taking it and one of them said, "Hey, what did Old MacDonald have?" His friend said, "Stupid, Old MacDonald had a farm." "Well how do you spell farm?" He said, "Stupid, e i e i 0." Now the gentleman who met me at the registration line from Lakewood, Colorado, was asking me about one of our great big tackles; and he is doing well. We call him Doctor Death; he is also a wrestler and that gentleman said, "1 don't know how bright he is." 1 said, "He is bright enough for our academic tutoring that he is going to get through all right." So I'm delighted to see you and be here with my very dear friend, Carl Terzian. Carl and 1 were in Los Angeles together for 10 or 12 years when I was president of Pepperdine University. He and I are exactly the same age. Born in 1935 and 1 a month or two later in 1936. Fewer children were born in that period than in any other period of time in this century. For those of you who remember anything about that period, you will know why no one was having babies during that period. But Carl called and said, "Bill do you know where Vail, Colorado is?" Well when you live in Oklahoma, you learn where Colorado is in a hurry. 1 not only know this beautiful area, but have made too much of an investment here at a place called Beaver Creek. The real estate is cheap over there. 1 play regularly in the Gerald Ford Invitational Golf Tournament here. Hope you will visit Beaver Creek. It's just 10- 12 miles to the west. The sight of the 1976 winter olympics until the people of Colorado voted them out. And now Vail Associates and I are good Oklahoma families. Bass family, Harry Bass of course, many of you know this story, who is chairman of the Board of Vail Associates, is making quite an investment in that year-round resort area. "LET ME FIRST OF ALL thank you for sending this invitation to me to participate in this Annual Meeting of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. As an engineer, although I don't get an opportunity to practice very much engineering these days, I am, of course, always pleased to be able to meet with my fellow engineers to exchange views, but I must admit that today I feel a little bit out of place in the midst of all the experts that are here today. Let me make one thing clear - I'm a generalist! Your program states that I am to make a keynote address. I have always thought that a keynote speech is one that says something that has not been said before - announces some new program or policy, or says something startling. I am sure you will understand when I tell you that keynote addresses are made by politicians and that civil servants speaking publicly are usually expected to give an account of what is, or what is likely, to happen as a result of policies that have been announced in keynote speeches by politicians. I am reminded of a statement by a distinguished parliamentarian who said, ""However exalted a civil servant may be, he is not above the elected officials."" So today I will confine myself to giving you an overview with particular emphasis on the development side of oil and gas. The theme of ""Oil and Gas"" is a topical one these days. I suppose it's because of all the copy that is being generated by the media on the U.S. energy crisis, the Mid-East situation, the fact that most of the world's proven oil reserves are in Arab hands and, of course, the accelerated exploration activity that is taking place in the North Sea, in the Arctic, and off the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia."

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the earth’s most abundant copper ore mineral, but is refractory to leaching with sulfates, chlorides, and other common lixiviants and oxidants. This has led to increasing research into alternative lixiviants for recovering Cu from chalcopyrite. Here, we review the leach kinetics of chalcopyrite in glycine, ionic liquids, and methanesulfonic acid, compared to baseline ferric sulfate and ferric chloride. Glycine (CH2NH2COOH) has long been used in applications such as biocatalysis and electroplating, and has recently been examined as a lixiviant for whole ores and concentrates of both copper and gold. It is nontoxic, biodegradable, and capable of strongly complexing Cu2+. Compatible oxidants are peroxide, dissolved oxygen, and ferric sulfate. Chalcopyrite leaching rate in glycine is chemical reaction-controlled, but the effects of grain size and the reaction orders with respect to lixiviant and oxidant concentrations and mass transfer vary. The use of ionic liquids as a leaching agent for chalcopyrite has been extensively investigated in recent years. This system is based primarily on the use of the imidazolium molecule (C3H5N2), which is a planar 5-member ring structure. This lixiviant has been applied to the leaching of chalcopyrite in the form of pure mineral, concentrates, and ores. Kinetics of ionic liquid leaching of chalcopyrite vary substantially depending on the type and concentration of ionic liquid. Methanesulfonic acid (HCH3SO3) is one of the newest lixiviants available in leaching, having only been examined in the last decade. It has been examined as a substitute for sulfuric acid, since it is less corrosive, is biodegradable, and breaks down to carbon dioxide and sulfate over time. The rate of copper leaching from chalcopyrite by methanesulfonic acid is controlled by diffusion and exhibits a strong dependence on oxidant type and concentration. Despite promising reaction rates and total extraction by some of these novel lixiviants, comparison with baseline ferric sulfate and ferric chloride systems makes it doubtful that any will be commercially viable in the near term. Only at very high reagent concentrations and temperatures, and/or very fine grain size, did any of the systems perform comparably to the much cheaper ferric chloride at extracting Cu from chalcopyrite. Most had similar overall reaction rates and total extraction to ferric sulfate, which is relatively common and cheap. However, the leaching kinetics of these novel lixiviants offer valuable insight into the dissolution behavior of chalcopyrite in various systems.

THE present ruling principle in shop and factory, induced by conditions of. keen competition, is to do the greatest amount of work in the shortest time, or in other words, to secure the greatest output at least cost, a condition which generally necessitated the substitution of machinery for manual labor. The chemical laboratory in our industrial establishments has remained a factor of minor importance, and, for this, reason, not only has progress been permitted to lag, but the methods of analytical work have been carried on along individual traditional lines. Some works-laboratories are equipped with such conveniences as Gooch filters, suction-pumps, compressed air, shaking-machines, centrifugal machines, crushers, etc., yet there is much room for improvement, particularly in laboratories of metal smelting and refining plants, in which long series of filtrations and stirrings are performed singly by hand in a slow and laborious manner. There are also many other instances in which collective handling appears rational. As a rule the chemist wastes much time by such manual labor, which, in a modern establishment and under up-to-date management, could be more advantageously applied to useful chemical work; and such higher chemical work is gradually and surely becoming recognized as an essential extension of old-time methods of assaying. While it maybe said that in some laboratories, boys and not chemists do the manual labor, it should be borne in mind that all chemical work requires care and accuracy and in these respects boys are naturally a source of concern to the responsible chemist. Moreover, the cheapness of child-labor is largely offset by the increase in the expense-account of laboratory materials, caused chiefly by breakages resulting from care¬lessness. Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

THE members arrived at Ticonderoga, N. Y., at noon, Tuesday, October 15th, and were received by Mr. Cyrus Butler, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements. During the afternoon the works of the American Graphite Company and the Horicon Iron Company were visited under the guidance of Mr. Butler, President of both companies, and of Mr. William Hooper, Superintendent. An excursion was then made, in carriages, to old Fort Ticonderoga, on Lake Champlain, after which the party were driven to the Rogers Rock Hotel, on Lake George. The first session of the Institute was held in the parlor of time hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, President of the Institute, opened the proceedings with the following address: I shall ask your attention, this evening, to a few reflections upon the subject of mining engineering as a profession in the United States, its past, its present, and its future, and its duties and oppor¬tunities with reference to the proper development of our great min¬eral resources. Thirty years ago, there were scarcely any mining engineers in this country, and but few in England, and there were no institutions where young men could be educated for the profession in the Eng¬lish language. France and Germany have been able for about a century to boast of mining schools of a high character, that number among their graduates such men as Humboldt, Weisbach, Rittinger, Combes, and Gruner. Of the few we then had worthy of the name of "mining engi¬neer," some had studied in the continental academies, and others were graduates in the school of practical experience, and had learned their profession in mines and smelting-works. Their work con¬sisted principally in making surveys and maps of mines and mining properties, geological reports, and analyses of ores ; but the mining engineer whom we often meet with now, who has studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy, geology, mechanics, and drawing; who is more or less familiar with machinery and its construction, and with the practical management of mines or smelting-works, and who is an expert in some one branch of his profession, would have been very difficult if not impossible to find in the United States. Although laterite ores already provide a significant proportion of the world's nickel and cobalt production it is anticipated that they will surpass sulphide ores as a source of nickel in the next century. The most recent period of greenfield nickel project construction was during the 1970s when it was notable that all of the eight new plants were based on treating laterite ores. This was because of the relatively large selection of available high grade laterite ore deposits amenable to cheap open cast mining and a paucity of high grade sulphide ore prospect alternatives. Of the three processing options for treating laterite ores: 1. smelting for the lower horizon saprolite ore, 2. ammonia; and 3. acid leach for the upper horizon limonite ore, smelting currently accounts for about 80 per cent of nickel production. In the future, as saprolite ore grades decline because of relatively high exploitation rates, the incentive to process the large untapped reserves of limonite ore will increase. The high cobalt content of limonite ore also makes it ideally suited to processing by a hydrometallurgical rather than smelting route. With only two exceptions, all saprolite smelting operations have a Class 2 nickel end product (largely ferronickel) and do not produce a cobalt by-product. As a result of technological advances, the modified ammonia leach process for limonite and transition ore as undertaken at Yabulu, now allows the production of pure nickel metal as a Class 1 product, along with significant tonnages of cobalt by-product. The mixed Ni-Co sulphide intermediate product of the pressure acid leach processing of limonite ore at Mon is converted to Class 1 nickel and cobalt metal at Fort Saskatchewan, Canada.

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

The study of leached outcrops as an aid in determining the character of mineralization beneath the surface is in its infancy. Practically all the work on this subject up to the present has been applied to the 'porphyry' copper deposits of the southwestern United States. Some work has been done also on the zinc-lead solid sulphide deposits of the western United States. The question has been asked, "Can this study be applied, and would it have any practical application, in northern Manitoba?" When one realizes the size of the unprospected territory in this Province and the consequent need for a cheap and rapid method of interpreting the countless outcrops which occur in order to discriminate between valueless iron sulphides and valuable sulphides of the base metals, it is readily seen that the study is of great value if it can be applied with a reasonable degree of surety. Augustus Locke, well known economic geologist of the southwestern United States and a pioneer in the study of leached outcrops of disseminated copper ore, has written much on the subject. Messrs. Blanchard and Boswell in a series of articles have dealt with the leached outcrops derived from lead and zinc sulphides in the western United States. Since this paper is essentially a comparison between the leached outcrops of the southwestern United States and those of northern Manitoba with the purpose of testing the adaptability of the study in this Province, an outline of the criteria used in the southwest will be of value to the reader.

The upper-level mineralization of the din Buttes, Arizona copper orebody consists primarily of dilute copper silicate impregnation in fault clay and throughout the altered limestone hostrock. Cuprite and native copper are minor with true chrysocolla rare. Owing to the high calcium carbonate and to the hydrogen ion exchange capacity of the clays, acid leaching would be economical only with cheap acid available. Leaching of the silicate copper with reagents other than sulfuric acid is slow and incomplete unless the ore is first heated to disorder the mineralized grains and to reduce partially the contained copper. Following heat treatment, 70 to 90 percent of the nonsulfide copper can be dissolved in aqueous anrmonium carbonate. Recovery of a pregnant solution by counter-current decantation is effective provided ammonium carbonate solution is added to the washing stages in order to oppose adsorption of dissolved copper by clays in the residue. Thermal stripping of the pregnant solution permits recovery of ammonia and carbon dioxide while precipitating copper either as oxide or carbonate. The research program was carried from batch tests through continuous miniplant operation to a five-month campaign in a 20 TPD continuous pilot plant. Pilot plant results, the relationships among key varibles, and a detailed flowsheet are given.

IN the last analysis, two basic factors influence the use of metals and alloys; namely, cost and adaptability to the use under consideration. These are so interrelated that to study the properties of metals or alloys without considering the prices and price trends is quite illogical. Lead has been a cheap metal, selling in 1932 for the extremely low price of 2.56 cents per pound. The cheapness of lead in the past was not due to a particularly abundant supply of the element in the earth's crust but rather to the ease with which it was won from its ores and to the chemical stability of the metal, preventing its dissipation. Today, however, our modern economy has caught up with the distribution of lead in the earth's crust and the price is largely dictated by the supply of concentrates readily available for smelting, and which can be placed quickly upon the market. The demand for lead, particularly in times of stress, has brought the price up to the level of 19 cents in the United States, where the price is controlled by Government decree, and the price has been even higher in the world markets. The higher price for lead has changed the uses for this metal to a marked degree, driving it out of the fields where it is not essential. To many people, the word cartel implies illegality. However, although it is illegal in the US, cartels are an effective and legal way to conduct business elsewhere in the world. But be-fore we continue, what is a cartel? The American Heritage Dictionary defines a cartel as "a combination of independent business organizations formed to regulate production, pricing, and marketing of goods by the members." However, that definition does not fit many of the "cartels" we are examining today. The International Tin Council is an organization of both consumer and producer nations--no individual companies are represented. The buffer stock is used by the ITC to provide protection for both producers and consumers, and has only been in effect since 1955. (Earlier tin producers groups date back to 1921 when the Federated Malaysia States and the Netherlands East Indies formed the first intergovernmental tin agreement, known as the Bandoeng Pool, which only lasted three years.) The International Bauxite Association only dates back to 1974 when seven nations--Australia, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti and Jamaica--agreed to three main objectives: 1) to promote the orderly and rational development of the bauxite industry; 2) to secure a fair and reasonable return on the raw material for the benefit of the nations' citizens; and 3) to safeguard the interests of member countries in relation to the international bauxite industry. 1 Again this organization is composed of nations, not separate firms. This generally follows the pattern that the oil producing countries (OPEC) chose since the nations' mineral product-ion is controlled and often owned by the state. However, the group I am going to discuss fits the more classic mode of a cartel. The informal lead-zinc producers' cartel can be dated as far back as to Roman times when Romans are said to have imposed a quota system on British lead production to safeguard their Spanish lead mines. Also, the lead-zinc producers group is composed only of individual companies, not do not include any lead-zinc consumers. Finally, the activities of the group are not open to public scrutiny, and details are only now available due to a leak in the Australian government. At this point, it is necessary to split the two metals since while many of the members of the cartels produce both lead and zinc they do have different histories and marketing arrangements.

"Lead and its alloys are proper candidates for anodes in electrowinning processes mainly because they are insoluble in the leach solutions and relatively cheap. However, the annual cost of corrosion problems associated with these anodes is millions of dollars. In this study lead-silver and lead-calcium anodes were tested under typical nickel electrowinning conditions and the effect of chloride on the corrosion performance of the anode materials was investigated. Corrosion rates of the anodes were calculated using the discharge plateau (reduction of lead dioxide to lead sulfate) after galvanostatic experiments. It was found that lead calcium anodes have the highest corrosion rate both in the presence and absence of chloride. Surface morphology of the electrodes was studied using SEM and the corrosion products were characterized using XRD.IntroductionLead (Pb) is usually the preferred material for commercial anodes since it is insoluble in the leach solution and the costs are manageable. One advantage of using an insoluble material as an anode is the higher purity of the cathodic deposits and better quality of the end product. During nickel electrowinning, metallic nickel is deposited on the cathode while oxygen evolution reaction (OER) takes place on the anode. In practice, relatively high potentials are necessary for the reaction to proceed at the desired rate because of the high overpotential of OER on lead. Lead anodes get oxidized in typical electrowinning conditions and usually have two to three years of lifetime. Although the price of each anode is insignificant, the overall cost of corrosion of these anodes is considerable, which is due to the large number of anodes used in a plant, typically two to three thousand. Therefore, corrosion is a significant problem associated with lead anodes in commercial nickel electrowinning plants and industries show interest in addressing this problem. Corrosion of lead electrodes in acidic environments has been previously the subject of many research studies [I-7]. It has been reported that, during the anodic polarization of lead, several phases may be present on the surface, depending on the potential range that is being studied [8]. Lander showed that lead is oxidized at potentials higher than 0.252 YsHE with tetragonal lead monoxide being the main reaction product [9]. At 0.666 YsHE lead can transform to lead dioxide; however, it is not stable and transforms to lead sulfate and lead oxide. At potentials higher than 1.684 YsHE, lead dioxide is eventually a stable phase and forms a protective layer on the surface [I 0, 11]. Under conditions of a typical nickel electrowinning plant, usually a 200 A/m2 current density is passed through the electrodes."

Since its invention in 1859 various designs of lead batteries have evolved to meet commercial needs for traction applications and standby power. In recent years major developments have taken place in lead alloys and the chemistry and mechanical design of industrial lead batteries. These are reviewed in relation to their commercial application together with the new type of maintenance free gas re-combination lead-acid batteries which are opening so many new markets for lead.
