THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

The importance of controlled sand properties to the production of quality castings has been recognized by foundry men for many years, but the maintenance of requisite standards results in a relatively high sand consumption, which in steel foundries, for instance, may range from half a ton to over one ton of sand per ton of finished casting. During the war, obtaining and maintaining adequate sand supplies became a serious problem in many foundries, owing to increased wartime production and serious 'bottlenecks' in transportation. As a result, considerable interest was aroused in the possibilities of various sand reclamation systems by which up to 85 or 90 percent of discarded sand may be returned to a usable condition. During the past five years or so, a number of sand recovery installations have been made by both ferrous and non-ferrous foundries in Canada and the United States, and have resulted in substantial reductions in sand costs in every case. The possible benefits of sand reclamation are particularly apparent in British Columbia where no suitable sands for steel and heavy iron foundries occur naturally, and where freight costs on imported sands are considerably higher than initial selling prices. This is well illustrated by the fact that silica sand, which sells for about $2.00 per ton at pits in Illinois, is laid clown in British Columbia for around $11.00 or $12.00 per ton. The operating costs quoted for certain of the reclamation schemes, i.e. $0.25 to $1.50 per ton, may actually be no higher than the cost of waste sand disposal in city-located foundries. In view of the foregoing considerations, the British Columbia Research Council has undertaken a study of the possibilities for sand reclamation, with particular attention directed to its application in local steel foundries. No commercial occurrences of silica sand are known in the Province, and, with this in view, the Council previously investigated the possibility of recovering silica sand from local impure sands. Results were definitely encouraging, but it was felt that the present market is too small to permit economical production by the method developed.

Checking the quality of a blast may be considered as subjective. Checking this quality will require measuring objective parameters. One of them is the resulting fragmentation of the blasted product. Numerous fragmentation æmeasuringÆ systems have been developed and marketed, based on image-processing. This presentation of FragScan will illustrate advantages and difficulties when using such a system. FragScan is essentially defending a policy of large and representative sampling. The purpose is to show how fragmentation is discriminating both productivity and profit of quarry operations on a blast-by blast basis. The next step will then be to ædriveÆ the blasting process to reach a æbetterÆ fragmentation. Other applications require the fragmentation as an essential result: this is the case for large boulders used in structure-reinforcement. Several case-studies have shown that FragScan can be used for quality-control, checking size-distribution of the product according to the requirements of the end-user. Only clear thinking about the precise use of such a æmeasurementÆ will further the success of this task.

Friction rock stabilisers, commonly termed ‘Split Sets’, friction rock bolts, or continuous friction coupled bolts are the most widely used rock bolt in the Australian underground metalliferous industry. Historically, they were used for temporary reinforcement, mainly within ore development. However, their use as primary reinforcement has grown with the demand for higher development rates at lower costs. The introduction of galvanisation has increased their longevity and pattern bolting in conjunction with weld mesh, specifically made for use in development headings, has allowed the use of friction rock stabilisers to increase rapidly with development jumbo’s undertaking the installation. The installation of friction rock stabilisers appears to be deceptively simple, particularly when compared to resin encapsulated bolts. The friction rock stabilisers capacity is a function of the borehole parameters, rock mass quality/strength, the bolt dimensions and steel quality, and lastly and perhaps the most important the operator skill levels. However, as in industry we are still seeing common occurrences of friction rock stabilisers not reaching their design pull test capacity. Pull testing the friction rock stabilisers is used to verify the installation of the design capacity. It involves loading the collar of the bolt with a hydraulic ram until the design load is reached or the bolt slips. Pull tests often show failure rates of 20 per cent or higher. This is despite over 40 years of use and with millions of units installed annually. Such high failure rates would suggest there remain issues with the quality of installation. Ground support quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) programs are needed in combination with operator training to ensure that pull test failure rates are kept as low as practical. However, there are times when despite the QAQC being completed the pull test failure rates increase quite suddenly. When this occurs, it is important to conduct a thorough investigation. These investigations often show there are several factors that are not obvious to personnel installing the bolts. To complete a useful investigation, it must also be done methodically, working through the entire process that includes less obvious factors such as steel quality and the calibration of the hydraulic pull test kit. The aim of the paper is to give mine practitioners an understanding of the complexities of friction rock stabilisers, what QAQC requirements they should be doing on-site, what can go wrong during installation and, if necessary, a process of how to conduct investigations into high friction rock stabiliser pull test failure rates.

BHP Billiton (BHPB) was the first company to start iron ore mining in the Pilbara at Mt Goldsworthy in 1966 through Goldsworthy Mining Limited (GML - then Consolidated Goldfields Australia, Cyprus Mines and Utah). Operations later started at Newman on Mt Whaleback in 1969 with the Mt Newman Mining Joint Venture (MNM û then comprising American Metals Climax û AMAX, Colonial Sugar Refineries û CSR and BHP). In 1986 it acquired majority ownership of MNM, and at the same time the previously 100 per cent BHPB owned but undeveloped Yandi property came on board. Purchase of Jimblebar (formerly McCameyÆs Monster) occurred in 1990 and full ownership of Goldsworthy followed in 1991. With the exception of Jimblebar (100 per cent owned), all mines are now 85 per cent BHPB and the balance with Itochu and Mitsui. This evolution of the company resulted in an eclectic mix of mines/ores, each with their varied exploration and evaluation histories. Discussion of some aspects of these histories, and reflections on changes in exploration-related activities with particular reference to discussion of advances in geological understanding since the 1960s forms the basis of this paper. BHPB presently has open cut mines at four main centres û Newman, Jimblebar, Marillana Creek (Yandi) and Yarrie û and is currently developing the former GML Area C near Yandi. With the exception of NewmanÆs Mt Whaleback mine and immediate satellites, all are contract operated. Ore is carried on BHPB railroads (696 km total) for export through the companyÆs Nelson Point or Finucane Island shipping facilities at Port Hedland. Some is directed to the BHPB Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant near Finucane Island. Over 73 Mt of ore was produced by BHPB in calendar 2001, and the company has now mined over 1500 Mt in Western Australia since their operations at Yampi Sound first started in 1956.

DURING the development of froth flotation for the treatment of sulphide ores, a certain amount of information was collected about a few of the nonmetallic minerals, and occasionally the gangue minerals in the sulphide ores showed an embarrassing tendency to float. However, for many years efforts were expended to develop reagents that would cause wetting and depression of these minerals. Among the nonmetallics, the minerals sulphur, graphite, and talc probably should be classified as 'natural floaters', and perhaps sericite. They respond to almost any type of flotation reagent, and their beneficiation by flotation had been attempted years ago. Flotation of sulphur is now common practice, and graphite was concentrated during the World War in many mills, most of which have now closed down. A talc mill has just been constructed, and another may soon be erected. Second to the 'natural floaters' come the 'easy floaters', cassiterite, fluorite, barite, mica, colloidal gangue, and paper pulp from white water of paper mills. That these materials responded to some of the early flotation reagents, as oleic acid, has long been known; occasional references to their behaviour are found in the very early flotation literature and in that of today. In general, however, nonmetallic minerals, valued at $2.00 to $15.00 per ton, have for a long time been regarded as cheap products and not worth much beneficiation. Consequently, only high-grade natural deposits suitable for direct mining and sale have been gouged out. Furthermore, the mining of these minerals has too frequently been in the hands of 'super-practical' men-men of no technical or other training, willing to work for a very low compensation. From the social standpoint, nonmetallics has been the field for small, untrained enterprisers with little money to spend on plant or equipment. But times have been changing. The impact of technically trained men on the old industry has revealed appalling losses and inefficien-cies and proved the value of processing materials discarded or avoided by the old regime.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors- used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. Of increasing importance to the student of fuels economics has been the extent to which different primary energy sources can substitute for each other in the various energy markets of the nation. Knowledge of the nature and extent of fuel interchangeability can aid the fuels economist in projecting trends of energy utilization, as well as giving him a better understanding of the past and present conditions of fuel markets. It is also important to the consumer to know just how much flexibility he can maintain in his energy consuming operations. And, finally, various governmental bodies show keen interest in the degree of energy substitutability in determining public policies concerning the fuels industries. The presence of excess fuel production capacity in the United States during the early 1960's indicates that fuel interchangeability should become more prevalent in the increasingly competitive energy markets of the nation. Discussion of fuel intercompetition is almost always restricted to qualitative terms-because of the lack of comparable statistical data, between the different energy sources in geographic or "type-of-use" fuel, markets. There are exceptions, of course, such as, the excellent fuel consumption data which are available on steam electric generating plants throughout the nation. In other sectors, statistics are at best incomplete.' Inmost instances, indirect fuel consumption indicators, such as sales of fuel burning equipment, are extensively used to measure market shares of a particular fuel; however, these indicators are hard to evaluate precisely without prior knowledge of the total competitive market.

The production of synthetic fuels from coal has been pioneered by South Africa. South Africa made a decision in 1975, due to the threat of an oil embargo, to proceed with the construction of Sasol Two, then followed by Sasol Three. South Africa has large coal but little indigenous petroleum reserves. The indirect coal liquefaction process used by Sasol since 1955 is the only commercially demonstrated method available for producing transport fuels from coal. The new plants consume 27 million tons per year of coal from a single mine that now produces transport fuels in sufficient quantities for energy independence.

HERACLITUS, a sage of antiquity, called the dark philosopher, who refused a throne, preferring a hermit's cell, propounded, twenty-four centuries since, the maxim : [ ] War (or strife) engenders all things. This, though probably intended by Heraclitus to apply especially to the internal forces of nature, is often said, with equal reason, of the affairs of men. Controversial strife, whether fortunately or unfortunately, is a crucible through which all new discoveries in science, and all technical applications of science must pass-a test which they must all endure before they can become so vitalized as to germinate, so to speak, take root in the human mind, grow tip, and overspread the earth. The greater the number and the power of the elements arrayed against such a growth, and of the influences hostile thereto, the greater should be the inherent vitality of the germ, the more strenuous, skilful, and persistent its cultivators and upholders. During the decade last past we have had, in spite of the severe stringency of the times, an active growth of this kind in progress, whose prospective importance it would now be difficult to overrate. This is the movement which has for its motive the idea that, generally speaking, fuel should be gaseous in form, and which has for its goal the introduction into general public use of gaseous products, made by cheap and rapid processes and on a gigantic scale, distributed throughout our cities and towns in distribution-systems which shall be proportionately gigantic, and sold at prices which will bring such fuel within the means of the poorest householders. THE No. 6 open-hearth furnace at the plant of the Worth Steel Co., Claymont, Del., is the first to be rebuilt according to the Kuehn system. This as well as the other five furnaces at Claymont, has a nominal capacity of 75 tons, but the actual charge is about 242,000 lb. No hot metal being available, the pig-iron is charged cold. Oil of low grade with an asphalt base is used as fuel. These two items have to be kept in mind when discussing the actual fuel consumption. Careful records have been kept covering a five weeks run and the following is a brief summary of them The time required to heat the furnace preparatory to charging from the time a wood fire was started until charging commenced was 36 hours. This, I understand, is much less than with furnaces of standard design. The draft of the furnace, as shown by a gage in the stack-flue, is 1.25 in. The maximum draft with new checkers on former runs was 1.50 in., this draft gradu¬ally decreasing as the checkers closed up. Both of the first helpers claim the present draft is all they need for the proper working of the furnace, and, as with the Kuehn regenerators the draft remains practically the same from beginning to end of a run, this is satisfactory.

Future developments in the mining sector will be driven by the need to increase safety, ecological sustainability and efficiency. Autonomous systems represent a huge step towards achieving these goals. This paper describes the basic infrastructure of an autonomous system – essentially a network of distributed sensors. Although the sensors are distributed, the overarching communication network with its related middleware offers a transparent and uniform layer. This middleware acts as an abstraction layer which priorities information and provides information to other platforms on request. This permits higher-level autonomous functionality to utilise all information available in the system regardless of where data has been generated or via which physical communication link it has been processed.The Personnel Proximity Detection (PDD) system is described in detail as an example, with details not only of the system itself, but also of the essential full integration and how the abstraction layer allows this technology to be plugged in at any location of the network. The paper ends with a summary of the content and a conclusion.

Functional mineral pigments are used in large quantities in paint, paper, plastics, rubber, textiles, agriculture, and several other industries. U.S. consumption in 1969 is estimated at over 5 million tons a year, valued at nearly $150 million, as shown in Table 1. Originally extender pigments were employed only to lower cost. They were thought of merely as adulterants to replace more expensive prime pigments and binders. However, over the years their role has become better understood, and today their main functions are: - Increasing strength, stability, and service life. - Improving surface properties. - Enhancing application and processing properties. - Extending prime pigments. - Controlling viscosity and package stability - Lowering overall costs of the finished product. The principal minerals used as functional pigments are kaolin, ground calcium carbonate, talc, and asbestos. Other minerals include barytes, attapulgite, diatomite, mica, ground silica, wollastonite, and nepheline syenite. Several synthetic products, including precipitated calcium carbonate; precipitated, gel, and fumed silica; alumina trihydrate; and barium sulfate, compete with mineral products. They are more expensive, but often have more closely controlled particle size or other properties because they can be tailor-made according to the requirements. This paper covers only natural products selling for $10 or more a ton, approximately the lower limit for pigment grades. Data refer only to consumption in pigment applications. For example, such applications as filter aids for diatomite are not included. Key properties of the major mineral pigments are given in Table 2. It is important to note that these properties are primarily physical rather than chemical. In general, these products are sold to performance specifications for what they can do rather than on chemical composition specifications on what they contain.

"Many investigations are being performed with the goal of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and permanently storing it in geologically stable settings. At the same time, carbon dioxide in the form of dissolved carbonate is steadily accumulating in the world's oceans. Both carbon dioxide sequestration and oceanic accumulation are constrained by the aqueous thermodynamics of the carbonate system. These constraints are illustrated using the STABCAL computer model to generate potential-pH and aqueous distribution diagrams of seawater in contact with various pressures of carbon dioxide gas. STABCAL diagrams and titration simulations are also used to model some potentially useful cation-carbonate sequestrationsystems.IntroductionAtmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have risen dramatically in the past couple of centuries and are rising still, primarily as a result of human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels. Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have been implicated as a main cause of global warming but have other effects as well.Rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide result in increased concentrations of dissolved carbonate complexes in water, including the oceans. These dissolved carbonates interact with other dissolved substances, altering overall seawater chemistry, most noticeably causing lowered pH levels.Some of these chemical changes are observed directly, for instance the general drop in oceanic pH, [1], while others can be inferred and predicted using thermodynamic modeling. The chemistry of dissolved carbonate in seawater is not especially intricate, as such chemical systems go, but neither is it simple enough to be worked out on the back of an envelope. Interactions between the several simple carbonate species and all the major dissolved cations in seawater should be considered, as well as the effects of competing anions, especially chloride and sulphate, since they are much more abundant than carbonate in seawater."

In the field o f Metallic Zinc: (1) Construction of further continuous vertical retort smelting capacity in the United States and Germany. (2) Expansion of fractional distillation capacity in the United States. (3) Great expansion in the zinc-base die-casting industry in the United States and abroad. (4) Wide acceptance of heavy galvanizing by the steel industry. (5) Construction of the first commercial wire electroplating plant for putting on heavy coats of pure zinc. (6) Firm establishment and appreciable expansion of the practice of using zinc dust as a reducing agent in the organic chemical industry.

THE great source of iron ore for the furnaces of this country has been the Lake Superior district. Ore was first discovered there in 1844, and the first shipments made via the Great Lakes in 1852 to a furnace at New Castle, Pa. The stream of ore from that region increased slowly to exceed a million tons in 1873, and did not reach 10 million tons until 1895. By 1901 it exceeded 20 million tons, and in 1907 over 40 million tons. Total Lake Superior output through 1948 was about 2500 million long tons. Outside the Lake Superior district are the Southern district, including mainly Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, and Texas; the Eastern district of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; the Western district embracing Wyoming, Utah, and California.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Extraction of minerals Reserves-Dimensions-Technologies 2. Usage of mineral resources-Manufacture’s products designed to be reused and recycled 3. Nature- Equilibrium (physical, chemical and biological)"

TO show the vital importance of our future oil supplies to our economy, I will merely point out that this country, with something like 15 per cent of the world's land area and something like 7 per cent of the world's population normally uses between 65 and 70 per cent of the motor vehicles of the world, between 65 and 70 per cent of the world's rubber, and produces and refines between 65 and 70 per cent of the world's petroleum. Despite all the arguments as to which is cause and which is effect, all will agree that all three of these important industries are mutually dependent. If we had not been able to produce 65 or 70 per cent of the world's oil in this country we would not have the degree of mechanization, or the efficiency of transportation, or the high industrialization that we enjoy. Furthermore, the fact that oil has been plentiful and cheap has had a tremendous effect on all the things in which we as engineers are interested. For that reason, if for no other, it is well to look ahead to see what the outlook is for the near and far-distant future.
