A new range of wear-resistant materials is being produced by technology that has been used to develop high performance metal-matrix composites. These include steels and aluminium alloys that can be made as sheet, plate, rod or bar. The incorporation of hard, wear-resistant particles in an alloy matrix is achieved by reactive casting, spray deposition and powder metallurgical techniques. For example, large particles of TiC can be homogeneously distributed in steel during casting and the subsequent product can easily be rolled to plate. Similarly, up to 20% alumina particles and SiC can be injected, respectively, into steel and wear-resistant aluminium alloys by spray deposition. The current state of development of the process is reviewed and indications are given of the projected applications of such materials.

"Due to the gradual exhaustion of easily extractive gold ores, it is vital to make efficient use of refractory gold ores which hold 30% gold storage of the world. However, the disadvantage of current processing technologies for refractory gold ores consists of severe pollution, low gold extraction ratio, high investment, etc, thus great research interests were attracted during recent years. This article provides an overview of the distribution and categories of the refractory gold ores in the world. The state of art in processing refractory gold ores by pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy techniques and their industrial applications are highlighted. Potential environmental conservative techniques for efficient gold extraction are also reviewed.IntroductionResources of Refractory Gold OresAs easily extractive gold ores are going to be exhausted with the large scale mining nowadays, refractory gold ores are becoming more and more important. Gold in the refractory gold ore cannot be fully extracted using conventional method (cyanidation) even with fine grinding. The amount of gold in the refractory gold ores is about 1500~2000t in China, which occupies 30~40% of the total gold storage [1]. Is recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. Cost oF Drilling Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 30 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $I per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft.. as more time is consumed in pulling rods' 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations? etc' 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

THE recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Murfreesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to. our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress ; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.-The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett.1 Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. After an extensive period of erosion, during which an unknown portion of the neck and presumably a previously existent volcanic cone have been removed, the surface was covered with thin beds of Post-Tertiary conglomerate. The volcanic intrusion was accompanied by the formation of several small dikes of a rock much like that of the main body. One of these dikes cuts across the stock, while another cuts the Cretaceous sandstone, but is overlain by the conglomerate, thus giving a datum for the period of intrusion. So far as known, there was little, if any, metamorphism of the country-rock by the igneous magna, which probably followed an approximately vertical course, so that a more or less vertical extension downward of the igneous body to indefinite depths may be expected.

CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

The productivity in coal mines, measured in terns of the output per manshift depends largely on the efficiency and speed of men and materials transport between working faces and the surface. The mechanization of coal winning and material handling processes has led to a great rise in the mine productivity (1). Early applications of power in U. S. coal mines were mainly electrical. The excellent traction available with the DC motor and the ease of the distribution of the DC power have made trolley wire installations for haulage very popular. In shallow mines with very limited emissions of methane it did not constitute a major hazard but as mine depths increased and corresponding emissions of methane also increased fire and methane ignition hazards have become very serious. Conveyors have proved economic where intense mechanization of coal faces generates a large output of coal from a single face, but the fire and respirable dust hazard associated with them are no less serious. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 laid down numerous provisions for the safe use of trolley-wire haulage and conveyors (2) which generally improve safety but in some cases complicate mining operations and have decreased productivity significantly since 1969. In course of time as coal mines become deeper and hence gassier and as the emphasis on safety increases it would be inconceivable to use trolley-wire haulage under ground as already witnessed in several other countries with deep coal mines. With rising capital investments and cost of the protection against fire and respirable dust, the use of conveyors may also have to be limited to special areas, e.g. main entries. Indeed, there are only two alternatives available, namely; (1) Degasify the coal seams prior to mining and use conventional electrical power, or (2) Develop alternate sources of power which would be safer and yet efficient and cheap.

Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

"A t remote locations typical of mines and associated ore processing plants, diesel electric generators are ideally suited for power plants due to their inherent operating flexibility, efficiency and reliability. In recent years rapid escalation in fuel and related transportation costs has made extensive waste heat recovery from generating sets financially attractive to a much greater extent than previously.The paper outlines key considerations during planning and design stages for utilizing the various waste heat sources available to best advantage. Based on two /980 mining projects built in the Canadian Arctic, data is presented on potential operating and capital costs savings. A review of heat balances, engineering flow diagrams and major equipment selections for process and building heating systems utilizing waste heat is included.IntroductionResource projects increasingly occur in remote areas requiring on-site self sufficiency in electrical power generation. For such projects, the low- or medium-speed turbo-charged diesel engine is very often the preferred choice as a prime mover for the generating sets . It is inherently reliable, has good response to load changes and has comparatively high fuel efficiency over a wide load range . From a project execution standpoint, It is capital cost- competitive and procurement lead-time normally ' fits ' within tight schedule constraints. In addition, its potential for waste heat recovery is excellent , particularly in northern climates where space heating requirements are usually substantial, and also where there a re requirements for heat for process and plant services.The high cost of fuel , with add-on transportation costs , provides a major incentive to fully exploit the available waste heat recovery potential o f such installations.As a result of the rapid escalation in the price of petroleum products following major crude oil price increases in 1973 and again in 1978-79, liquid petroleum fuels, having the desirable properties of comparatively high heat content and transportability, are no longer 'cheap' commodities and have become so valuable that industry has widely undertaken serious conservation efforts.Currently, it appears that petroleum cost trends of the 1970s may not continue, at least in the near term, and that we may see somewhat reduced energy costs for a time. In the longer term , and certainly within the life spa n of major projects, however, it is generally believed to be inevitable that these fuels will be increasingly expensive . Energy costs are today a major operating cost for remote minerals processing plants and will remain so for the foreseeable future.In order to meet the economic challenge posed by high energy costs, future projects should be thoughtfully planned from the outset with the goal of minimizing energy requirements and maximizing the use of waste heat recovery to meet such requirements. There is also considerable potential for significant energy savings by retrofitting of existing installations."

The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. An atmospheric acid leaching process for leaching nickel and cobalt from highly-serpentinized saprolitic fractions of nickel laterite deposits has been developed and patented [I]. The process involves leaching the highly-serpentinized saprolitic portion of the nickel laterite ore profile in strong sulphuric acid solutions at atmospheric pressure and temperatures between 80°C and 100°C, essentially autogenously, to extract over 85% of its contained nickel content and a large proportion of its cobalt content after leaching times of about one hour. The amount of sulphuric acid used in the leaching process is between 80% and 100% by weight of the finely ground highly-serpentinized saprolite ore on a dry weight basis. "Noranda has been investigating a pyrometallurgical process for the direct recovery of zinc from zinc concentrate and zinc and iron containing residues. The process consists of injecting dry zinc concentrate and secondary zinc materials into a molten iron oxysulphide bath, volatilizing metallic zinc into furnace off gas essentially free of sulphur or S02, fixing sulphur contained in the feed materials as iron oxysulphide matte which is disposed, and recovering metallic zinc in an ISP type lead splash condenser. Combustion of petroleum coke with air or oxygen enriched air inside the oxygen containing matte supplies part of the heat, and the products of combustion dilute the zinc-laden gas to a desired level.This paper describes the process concept, thermodynamic background, experimental tests, mass and heat balance calculation for a conceptual flowsheet, environmental stability of the residue and advantages and disadvantages of the process. Experimental tests have successfully proved the process concept and thermodynamic predictions. Direct smelting of zinc concentrate and residues inside an iron oxysulfide bath has a great potential to become a cost effective and flexible zinc smelting process.1. INTRODUCTIONZinc is mainly produced by a roast-leach-electrowinning process route, which accounts for about 80% of the world primary zinc production. This process produces high quality zinc with very high zinc recovery (>95%) but suffers from several major drawbacks such as using high cost electricity as reductant, producing environmentally problematic iron containing leach residue (jarosite or goethite) and the difficulty in treating secondary zinc feed materials containing high impurity levels, such as electric arc furnace dusts from the steel industry, and other complex sources. Also in some areas, markets for sulphuric acid are distant resulting in negative realizations on acid sales.The Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) process is the major pyrometallurgical process to treat zinc-lead concentrate. The advantage of this process over the electrolytic zinc process is its flexibility in treating high-lead, bulk concentrates with high recoveries of lead, copper and precious metals. However, this is a two-stage process involving sintering of Zn-Pb concentrates followed by blast furnace reduction. The process requires large amounts of high-quality coke which is a major operation cost, and the sintering process which results in serious environmental problems."

This paper describes the geology of the Kalamazoo copper orebody discovered in the course of an exploration project carried out by Quintana Minerals Corporation under the author's direction in an area immediately southwest of the San Manuel mine, Pinal County, Arizona. In the period 1943-1947, exploration projects were carried out in the San Manuel area by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Magma Copper Company which resulted in the development of the San Manuel underground block-cave mine which is now in production at a rate of 41, 000 tons per day. Mining claims covering the area immediately west of the San Manuel orebody were staked in 1946 by Frank F. Salas, R. A. Buzan, H. G. Buzan, and W. C. Buzan of Mammoth, Arizona. These claims were optioned to Martha Purcell in 1946, and in the period of 1947-1958 seven churn drill holes ranging in depth from 1,400 to 2,950 feet were drilled by Mrs. Purcell. These holes did not intersect ore and no further deep exploration was attempted prior to the Quintana Minerals project which began in August, 1965, and which is described in this report. The Kalamazoo deposit is in Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, T 9 S, R 16 E, Pinal County, Arizona, and it is reached by driving seven miles east from Oracle, Arizona (Figure 1) . The writer is indebted to Corbin J. Robertson and Ronald B. Thompson who participated in the exploration planning of this project and to a number of other individuals who contributed to its execution and management. Petrographic work by J. M. Guilbert was used as a basis for rock and alteration classifications.

The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. SAINSBURY Ron Haxby, Occidental Minerals What is the best method for drilling a 12-in. diam hole to a depth of 1200 ft and maintaining the deflection within 25ft from vertical? Ferris Sainsbury: In order to drill a 12-111. hole down to 1200 ft, In most places you would have to employ a rotary tricone bit With a down-the-hole hammer, I expect by that depth significant Inflows of water would be experienced Even with foams, we would not be able to get the water out of a hole of that diameter So the down-the-hole tricone method of drilling would be best. To keep it straight, we would probably employ the largest square drill stem compatible with the diameter of the hole. Ron Haxby: Is it common in drilling contracts to put in a vertical hole clause? Ferris Sainsbury: You can put in the vertical hole clause Ron Haxby: Does it cost more? Ferris Sainsbury: Normally, if the hole deviates, the driller can correct it with deflection wedges and will charge it back to you at cost, plus 10% or somewhere along that range Any drill hole has a tendency to go perpendicular to the dip, and there are times when stabilization systems are not successful in preventing the hole from turning into the dip of the formation. The only solution, in this situation, is to go in with an oriented wedge and kick the hole back out.
