One of the few innovations in hydrometallurgy in recent years has been the utilization of the chemistry of basic iron sulfates called jarosites. These have been used to make iron-zinc separations in the processing of zinc concentrates and are a very important factor in both the Duval and Cymet copper chloride processes as a means of preventing iron build-up in the closed leaching circuits. Copper oxychlorides are kindred compounds in that they are insoluble basic salts that form at low pH (1.5 to 3) and precipitate selectively from many base metal solutions. They have been reported in the chemical literature as far back as 1860, and a few of them are known in their mineralogical forms (particularly atacamite) usually as nuisance minerals because of their chloride content. Several patents describe their synthesis and use as fungicides and insecticides, and papers have discussed their formation as corrosion pro¬ducts on copper and brass piping (14).

IN COMPARISON with recent years 1932 has yielded much less tangible evidence of progress in copper reduction and refining. The industry has been extremely quiet, especially in the United States. Design and construction has been throttled by lack of new capital expenditures. The excess producing capacity of the whole industry and the extremely gloomy outlook for the future have made it unwise to tie up more capital except under special conditions. The plants built during the previous year have, however, been placed in operation. Older plants have been abandoned, temporarily shut down, placed on part time operating basis, or continue to operate at a low percentage of normal capacity. In the United States the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Douglas, Ariz., has completed the remodeling of the former Calumet & Arizona smelter. A new roaster and Cottrell plant chimney was completed this year. Though operations have been limited the new equipment has been found to justify all expectations. The reverberatory plant addition consists of two furnaces 26 by 107 ft. inside dimensions, with a high arch, and modern steel binding of excellent design. Natural gas fuel gives good results. One of these furnaces will treat 1000 tons of solid charge per day with a fuel consumption of approximately 3,000,000 B.t.u. per ton. The larger converters have not only yielded the expected lower costs, but have simplified operations in the converter department. The roast segregation process, which was patented in 1974, makes use of a set of chemical reactions that are different from the traditional sequential oxidation of iron and copper sulfides used by all modem pyrometallurgical processes to treat copper concentrates. It allows metallic copper to be obtained via sublimation of copper chloride at temperatures in the range of 700-800 OC. In addition it avoids melting the concentrate, doesn't require transferring molten materials, doesn't need flux addition and allows nearly all of the sulphur to be removed in one stage as a high-S02 gas stream. Most importantly, it allows a decrease in the use of energy to approximately 6 million BTU/ton of anodes. This represents a saving of approximately 40%, compared to the potential of the most advanced processes presently used. Such a promising process has been waiting for its first industrial application for more than 30 years. This article examines the technical difficulties that have delayed application of the roast segregation process to beneficiate copper concentrates. Technology concerns the ways of doing things; mineral technology the ways of performing operations required for obtaining minerals from the earth and extracting their valuable constituents for man's use. At any particular time, technology is relatively fixed, as everyone tries to adopt the way of doing things that has proved most profitable; but improvements evolve from minor changes here and there, and occasion- ally entirely new methods are discovered. Technologic improvement thus characterizes any long-time view of the mineral industries. Its test lies always in reduction of costs; there is no other incentive for the adoption of new methods. Reduction in cost of producing metal from ore decreases, in turn, the amount of metal that must be obtained from ore in order to pay for its production. An advancing technology thus is characterized by utilization of ores of lower and lower grade. A very important result of this is an increase in the gross quantity of metal obtainable at any price level, since the earth's crust contains vast amounts of very low-grade ores and relatively insignificant amounts of very high-grade ores. Technologic advances have, therefore, been the means of rendering the metals both cheap and abundant. SOMEWHAT biased by pride in twentieth century achievements, most of us mining engineers and diamond-drill operators look upon core drilling as a relatively modern practice. The invention of the diamond drill is generally ascribed to Rudolf Leschot, who made use of diamonds in 1846 in drilling blast holes in the Mont Cenis tunnel in Switzerland. In vain we search Agricola and other early writers on mining for signs of diamond drilling. We have, therefore, concluded that it was unknown until the middle of the last century. The trouble with this conclusion, as most prospectors will tell us, is that we "don't dig deep enough"; for it now appears that the archeologists have been putting one over on us for the last fifty years.

IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

IN the zeal for opening up new ore-bodies, or for. extracting the ore from attractive bodies gal ready opened up, we very often lose sight of the fact, that, after all, the operation of a mine is a business proposition, pure and simple; and for the best working-results should be treated upon a strict business basis. Of course, in every mine of consequence a record is kept of expenditures and receipts, and such glittering generalities as "gross receipts," " net receipts," " mining expenses," .and " per cent. profit," can be told to the cent; but does this . record show economy of management, either as compared with the same record of other months, or as compared to the record of other mines of the' same class ? Moreover, if such a record shows that the cost of mining is high, does it in any way en¬able the manager to put his finger on the leakage? Does it necessarily follow that a mine which makes a profit of, say, 40 per cent on 25-dollar ore, is doing less economical mining than one which saves 60 per cent on 80-dollar ore ? Of course the figures in the latter case look the more attractive, but when it comes to a point of saving everything which can be saved, and of cutting down expenses to the lowest possible cost of operation, the former mine is doubtless on the most firm and economical financial basis. But as the relative merits of the system of mining in the two cases, nothing could be decided without a basis of detailed comparison ; if one system is more economical than the other, why is it so, and wherein does the advantage lie ? This can be shown only by keeping accurately the cost of each mining operation. And no matter how dissimilar two mines may be in character and operation, yet there are a few general heads common to all mining operations. Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

Primary and secondary copper smelting dusts are being generated in varying quantities with very dissimilar characteristics due to the different compositions of feed materials and the type of process utilized. After categorizing the multitude of dust types, the criteria for on-site and off-site recycling of smelter dust in terms of type and concentrations of the accompanying elements are established. Thereby, consideration is given to the important aspects of: ? optimization of copper recovery ? quality of copper product ? valorization of accompanying elements ? elimination and disposal of deleterious impurities ? minimization of impact on operation ? effects on operating costs ? environmental impact of dust treatment on overall process Existing commercial, emerging and proposed copper smelting dusts, pyrometallurgical as well as hydrometallurgical, treatment schemes are reviewed and evaluated technically, economically and environmentally in an attempt to streamline the vast number of proposed options. Thereby, the high selectivity achievable in hydrometallurgical dust processing due to it being complementary to the smelting process is expected to be given increased consideration.

Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (US, Canada), better geological prospectivity (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock-market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This paper does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly which is multi-national in character nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free-trade treaty will reverse that investment flow.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

"IntroductionHaving mined an economic mineral bearing rock which is of insufficient grade to warrant direct smelting, upgrading or beneficiation is required to make it an economically viable ore. The first step in effecting the concentration process is comminution or sequential breaking of the rock to allow liberation and subsequent recovery of the desired mineral particles. Desirably the ore could be broken down to the point where the valuable mineral is completely liberated to maximize the chance of recovering as much of it and in as pure a form as possible. The number of energy intensive stages of breakage required to attain this goal depends on many physical characteristics of the ore such as hardness, friability, toughness, grain size, existing fracture planes and particle shapes.Commonly the distinct stages are primary, secondary and often tertiary crushing and finally grinding. To increase the efficiency of each stage of size reduction, pre-treatment sizing is common.Crusher feed is commonly scalped of large pieces or screened for reduction crushers and classified for secondary grindingcircuits.Although crushing and screening is employed for many different products, this chapter reviews current practice in larger tonnage metalliferous ore treatment plants.Current practice is to use large gyratory or jaw crushers for primary crushing and some sort of gyrating or cone crushers for additional stages of reduction. For autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuits only the primary crushing stage is necessary, the balance of the work being performed in the grinding stage. For conventional grinding circuits using ball mills or combinations of rod and ball mills, secondary, tertiary and even quaternary crushing stages are normally required.Older type crushers such as stamp mills, double rolls, sledging mills and hammermills are no longer common but are used for small tonnage special processes.Important to efficient crushing are a variety of sizing devices such as grizzlies and vibrating screens. Products at different stages must be stored to give surge capacity and allow controlled feeding rates through mechanical and gravity feeders. These storage piles, bins and feeders as well as crushers and screens are commonly integrated into a total facility by means of conveyor systems. Most often these are endless rubber belts driven by simple or multiple drive mechanisms usually consisting of electric motors and speed reducers."

The lead and copper smelting processes employed by Mount Isa Mines Limited, Mount Isa, Australia, are used to illustrate an operating viewpoint of some problems and solutions encountered in existing commercial sulphide smelters. The smelting processes discussed; include updraught sintering, blast furnace and reverberatory smelting, and converting. Selected examples are given of methods implemented, and options available, to improve the productivity and efficiency of conventional smelting processes.

This paper will review the metallurgical aspects of the completed expansion program at Quirke, and the current rehabilitation and refurbishing program at Panel. During the Quirke program, completed at the end of 1977, the plant capacity was increased from a nominal 4,500 to 7,000 short tons per milling day. The expansion of crushing, grinding, neutral thickening and filtering, leaching, partial neutralization, sand-slime separation, sand washing, C.C.D., clarification, ion exchange, mine water treatment, and tailings neutralization and pumping will be considered. The application of Enviro-Clear thickeners in the mine water treatment circuit and in the C.C.D. will be briefly reviewed. An automatic grinding and classification circuit for limestone will also be covered. The refurbishing program underway at Panel will be discussed. The Quirke and Panel plants will be contrasted and compared. In particular, reference will be made to environmental considerations. The innovative system for producing yellow cake at Panel, LAMIX, will be considered as well as the proposed treatment system for Panel tailings.

"IntroductionThe Chairman, in his speech to this body last year in Montreal, stated that the Dominion Coal Board looked to and depended upon the Bureau of Statistics for statistical material, and the Bureau does collect and publish monthly and annual data on coal. It may therefore be asked why an officer of the Dominion Coal Board should prepare and give a talk on statistics.I would explain that it has been our experience in the Board that, since the supply and consumption of coal in Canada is subject to a seasonal ebb and flow, it can be more profitably studied on the basis of a twelve-month period ending on March 31st than of a calendar year, since the end of March does represent a fairly stable end point in this ebb and flow. The figures are not prepared or published by the Bureau on that basis and it has therefore been thought that a presentation on this fiscal-year period would be of interest. The Bureau of Statistics has agreed that this may be valuable and all the data here presented are based on the reports secured from various sources by the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The only contribution by either myself or the staff of the Dominion Coal Board has been the tabulation in a different twelve month period, and the comments upon the picture presented.It should be noted that the data for the month of March, 1950, are not available in all cases and consequently the figures for that year contain an estimate for this month."

The decline in coal production has been slowed somewhat in recent years, mostly because of the industry's own remarkable success in holding the line on costs, and partly as a result of advances achieved through industry and government research. Nevertheless, the decline has continued. This downward trend combined with the increased productivity of labor through mechanization that has been necessary for coal to retain even its present competitive position, has resulted in a serious reduction in the number of miners required and large scale economic dislocations in mining communities. For coal to regain a more favorable position it must either expand existing markets by reducing the cost of the delivered product and thereby compete more effectively with other fuels or develop new uses that will require large tonnages of coal. New markets involving several million tons, which would look extremely attractive to most other United States industries--including the organic chemical industry--would do little to alleviate the coal industry?s depressed economic conditions, While such small new markets would be welcome, an industry producing over 400 million tons per year must look to large tonnage outlets for solutions to its long range economic problems.
