Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

"Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially different from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. As proved e.g. in [11], this results in substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Back in 1983, Bradley et al. presented a model of the centrifugal mill based on the kinetics of the mill charge by regarding it as a lumped mass. On the other hand, numerical modeling by ‘discrete element method (DEM)’ enabled us to observe the movement of each ball in the centrifugal mill with an extremely minute time intervals (Inoue et al., XX IMPC in 1997). The former approach rendered simple, even though approximate, expression of the mill behavior, while the latter method was advantageous in describing the behavior of the mill in terms of individual events taking place in the mill body, even though the result did not reduce to a simple expression. The characteristics of the centrifugal mill described by both these approaches proved to be in a degree of agreement. Thus, the kinetic approach was capable of presenting the overall view of the mill, while the DEM model was informative of the details that could not be depicted well enough by the simple math expressions."

"The major platinum producers in South Africa make use of electric furnaces for the melting of PGM bearing nickel - copper concentrates. To gain better understanding of the furnace operation, research was conducted at CSIRO Minerals in Melbourne, Australia. One aspect of the research project was the investigation of the factors affecting the electrical conductivity of melter type slags.Electrical conduction in slags can occur through two mechanisms: ionic and electronic. There is good understanding of the ionic mechanism. In slags containing high levels of iron, the dominant mechanism is electronic. There is limited understanding of the electronic mechanism and one of the aims of the research was to investigate this mechanism further.Experimental work was carried out on Al2O3.CaO.FeOx.MgO.SiO2 slags similar in composition to the melter slags. Conductivity increased significantly with iron oxide content. Above 20wt% FeOx, electronic conduction was significant and the conductivity varied with the oxidation state of the slag. As the iron oxide content was increased further, the electronic mechanism became more dominant. The conductivity reached a maximum at around pO2 = 10-7 to 10-4 atm., although this value was dependent on the total iron oxide content and basicity of the slag."

"Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

Social issues are increasingly recognized as significant inhibitors to mineral development projects. Increasingly social risk is being recognized as a key factor determining the success of a mineral investment. Groups opposed to a mine for social or political reasons often use environmental impacts, real or perceived, to prevent mine development. These risk factors depend largely on cultural perceptions of mining activities and must be understood as such in order to be appropriately managed. A first step to addressing social issues is inclusive, transparent and meaningful engagement of stakeholders. This process allows stakeholders to understand what the other parties value in order to collectively establish a common currency for development and the creation of mutual value. Expanding the scope of benefits and values a mine can bring is of increasing importance to mining companies who typically consult outside specialists remote from the mine site and late in the development timeline for this purpose. Training technical staff, engineers and geologists, who make initial and ongoing contact with local interests, in a holistic approach to mine development is crucial to successful and economic mineral development projects. Further extending this conversation to the general public, media governments and non-governmental organizations is a necessary step in developing a meaningful discourse on the benefit of mining activities.

The objective of this work is to investigate the inadequacies of current CFD based methodologies of model development for predicting combustion behavior of pulverized coal in furnaces. In the present paper, a steady state CFD model was used for in-depth analysis of pulverized coal combustion. The model accounts for turbulence, coal combustion, convective and radiative heat transfer and motion of coal particles. It also uses coal combustion models to account for important processes such as devolatilization, combustion of char and the evolution of fuel nitrogen during coal combustion. The model predicts fluid flow, heat transfer, progress of combustion and pollutant formation (NOx, etc.). The model uses several parameters, which need to be tuned with experimental data, which is not only limited in quantity but also insufficient in detail. Various existing methodologies like part calibration method for tuning of the parameters are discussed. In the present work, the parameters associated with coal combustion models were tuned and validated with published data obtained from an experimental furnace using one such part calibration methodology. The results clearly show that the model predictions differed with the experimental data not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. These discrepancies were attributed to part calibration methodology. A detailed parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the importance of parameters from various classes, namely, combustion kinetics, heat transfer, process and geometry parameters, and CFD model parameters. This investigation clearly indicates that parameters from different classes have significant effect on combustion behavior. The discrepancies in current methodology are discussed and a need for comprehensive methodology is highlighted. India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. The process technology adopted and modified to suit the altered requirements as well as the future trends are outlined.

"Studies reported in this paper used polymetallic Pb-Zn-Sb-As-(Ag, Au) ore from Dražnja, Kosovo. The ore is comparatively rich in Zn (6.56%) and Pb (2.87%), but with high rates of Sb and As. Conventional lead and zinc concentration by flotation produced galena and sphalerite rich concentrate with high recovery, but with excessive As and Sb. After chemical analyses, which could not detect the reason for the excessive elements, ore minerals were identified under the ore microscope, their texture characterized, and degree of liberation of useful minerals was assessed. Microscopy of the mineral concentrates revealed complex intergrowths of galena and marmatite minerals mostly with sulphosalt minerals (boulangerite, jamesonite and bournonite) and also with arsenopyrite mainly responsible for the unsatisfactory quality of the concentrate. These complex sulphosalts, among other things have similar behaviour during the flotation concentration, and in spite of their interlocking with galena, therefore inadequate liberation, sulphosalts remain in the lead concentrate. Microscopic analyses indicated that a better galena concentration product is possible with a higher rate of mineral liberation, and then by selective floc flotation of some sulphosalt minerals. Purpose of this work was to show that only chemical analysis is not sufficient, according to that we solved the problem by precise mineral identification and time consuming mineral liberation measurements. INTRODUCTION The polymetallic Pb-Zn-Sb-As-(Ag, Au) ore body of Dražnja, Kosovo, fairly rich in Zn (6.56%) and Pb (2.87%) was repeatedly explored and once even worked. Mineralization at Draznja was primarily represented by sphalerite, galenite and marcasite/pirite. Some sections comprise massive sulphides, and others are lower grade zones of semi-massive sphalerite/galena or marcasite/pyrite dominant sulphides. The ore body II was formed in the southern gallery in the structure Çukë – Lajthishtë (with content of 3.16% Pb and 7.31% Zn). Pb-Zn ore with increased content of As, Sb sulphosalts is not rare phenomenon in the world. While previously treated as unprofitable, economical uninteresting ore, today with development processing and new reagents (organic, ecologic), are the topic of scientific papers. The examination of Pb-Zn ore with high content of sulphosalts we find in deposits as: The hydrothermal vein deposit of Harja in the Baia Mare area, contain a wide variety of sulphosalts [Cook, N. & Damian, G., 1997]; also the deposits Fankou Mine in Guangdong Province and the Dachang Mine in Guangxi Province, where the flotation concentration of galena and jamesonite takes place [Runqing Liu et al. 2015], [Zhang Ting, Qin Wen-Qing, 2015];. On a samples from Tibet in China flotation separation test of galena and jamesonite was conducted [Sun Wei, Han Haisheng, Tao Hongbiao, Liu Runqing, 2015]. According to history of investigation, the mineralized area of Dražnja has a long history of exploration and possible exploitation activities [Slowey, Galen, 2009]. India is the 5th largest producer of steel in the world and is slated to produce more than 180 Mt by 2020. Expectedly about 50 % of this would be through the Blast furnace route and the rest through Sponge iron / DRI route. Considering that there will not be any major change in iron making technology by that time, the Blast operation would require lump ore (10-40mm) with around 64% Fe grade and sinter fines (<10mm) with 60% Fe (min) as its feed. DRI process would need calibrated ore of size 5-18 mm as the most suitable size of feed. It is also expected that of the total requirement of ore for the DRI route a significant part would be DRI pellets. In India, there is considerable debate going on regarding the technology to be adopted for the processing of iron ore and there is a lack of clear consensus. The above scenario indicates that the processing requirement of iron ore in the country would involve both washing technology as well as beneficiation technology. CDE Asia Ltd is in the forefront of iron ore processing in the country and the experience gained by the company over the last few years of functioning has led the company to believe that route to be adopted depends on the end product requirement and the starting grade of the feed. Keeping in mind the nature of the feed required for the Blast furnace & DRI operation; it is obvious that good washing technology would be highly beneficial to the iron ore industry. Depending on the grade of ore available the limits of washing will be decided and equipment for lump ore beneficiation such as jigs could be incorporated into the washing circuit. Scrubbing of ore either before washing or selectively scrubbing the lumps could be necessary. Very low grade ore and jig rejects would be required to be totally ground and beneficiated for the production of pellet feed in order to utilize the iron ore resources entirely. Another source of ore for pelletisation would be slimes generated from the washing process as well as the huge quantities already available in the tailings dams in the operating mines. Deslimimg and magnetic route of beneficiation could release at 30-40% of the Fe locked up in these tailings ponds/dams. The paper describes the concept with examples from operating plants and proposes how the adoption could be engineered through test work and proper plan of integration. In view of the shortage of soft water all over the Middle East countries, seawater may be used to replace the fresh water in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process required about 7 m3 of fresh water/ ton ore. This article aimed to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation process of four important mineral commodities. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential, zero point of charge and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The individual effects of different cations and anions that are predominant in seawater, within their more or less actual concentrations were studied on individual mineral and on groups of them. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, in the anionic circuit could be controlled by soda ash addition to the pulp before the anionic collector. The addition of sodium silicate improved the floatation selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At the optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate recovery of 83% with a grade of 34% P2O5, with 0.61%MgO, which from an ore assaying (25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO).

"The standard method of separation using flotation is compromised in terms of kinetics and efficiency, because of the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. A new flotation system has been developed that addresses these issues and imparts other benefits. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. Consequently the cell is designed only for the separation of the phases and not for bubble-particle contact. In the new system this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The observed result of these differential forces is the improvement of concentrate qualities by the reduction of the amount of misplaced material found in the froth. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.Prototypes of 0.65m, 1.7m and 2.2m cell diameter size have been constructed for hydrodynamic and industrial scale tests to assess the previously established computational methods for scale up of the process. The 1.7m cell has been installed and operated for cleaning of potash concentrates in Germany, at throughputs of 150 m3/hr, with extremely encouraging results. A 2.2m cell has been installed and operated in plant trials for superfine coal in South Africa. Results are presented that illustrate the effects of differential separations by comparison with conventional pneumatic and mechanical flotation techniques. Predictions of performance are provided in the contexts of the applications tested."

"The research is aimed at solving the processing of waste products of titanium-magnesium production. The aim of the research is to extract synthetic carnallite and industrial products enriched with niobium from waste products of titanium-magnesium production. Analysis of the current state of the titanium and magnesium production in the Republic of Kazakhstan shows the availability of significant amounts of chloride wastes containing valuable components. Magnesium and potassium with an average content of 50-60 % potassium chlorides, 25-30 % magnesium chlorides are lost in the wastes of the titanium and magnesium production. Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium Magnesium Plant JSC (UKTMP) currently imports carnallite that is a KCl-MgCl2X6H2O binary salt at quite high prices. Chloride wastes of titanium production, sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator, sludge of a magnesium electrolytic unit and sludge of a carnallite chlorinator has been chosen as the targets of our research. The analysis of niobium distribution within any solid waste of a titanium slag chlorination process in UKTMP JSC showed that the highest content of niobium is in the sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator in the ranges from 0.26 to 1.0 %. Among the niobium extraction technologies considered, the known method of its extraction from the chloride waste is leaching with weak solutions of mineral acids or alkalis in order to convert the chloride salts into the solution to be used for synthetic carnallite extraction. Besides niobium, other impurity components are transferred to the cake and shall be separated from the base metals. The effective method for this is the chlorination process enabling niobium transfer into the sublimates in the form of chlorides and thus separating it from the majority of the impurities. The condensed niobium chlorides are hydrolyzed transferring it into sediments in the form of oxide. New ways of processing waste products of titanium-magnesium production with the receipt of marketable products are relevant in the development of processing of mineral raw materials."

"In this paper, we report a simple and effective process for producing a surfactant mixture of O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC) and 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan (BBSH). The composite collector was synthesized via one-pot reaction of sodium isopropyl xanthate, 4-tert-butylbenzylchloride and ethylamine using tert-butyl alcohol as solvent. The whole process for the synthesis of composite collector involves neither foul smelling reagents or intermediates, nor any by-products requires special treatment for disposal, and thus can be scaled up to an industrial level. The flotation response of chalcopyrite and pyrite independently with IPETC and BBSH collectors and with their mixture (the mole ratio of IPETC and BBSH is 1:1) was assessed. The microflotation results showed that the collecting ability of BBSH was slightly stronger than that of IPETC and that IPETC was more selective collector than BBSH against pyrite, and that the composite collector displayed a stronger collecting ability toward chalcopyrite than IPETC, and superior selectivity for chalcopyrite against pyrite than BBSH. The batch flotation results showed that composite collector exhibited better performance than IPETC and BBSH. It was demonstrated that the mixing of IPETC and BBSH would give rise to a synergistic effect significantly enhancing overall flotation performance. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of BBSH on the surface of chalcopyrite was conducted by adsorption test and infrared spectrum measurement, and the results showed that the interaction of BBSH on the chalcopyrite surface was dominated by the chemical adsorption, and the formation of a strong S-M bond plays a key role in the adsorption of mercaptans on minerals surfaces. The developed flotation reagents with special preparation method is the author’s original design, patented (patent of the People’s Republic of China) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is an essential method widely used in the mineral processing industry to selectively separate valuable minerals from gangues[1]. Worldwide, more than 109 tons of materials are treated annually by this method with the majority being metal sulfides and oxides[2]. Nowadays, the judicious utilization of complex sulfides to meet the ever-growing demand of mineral resources gains more attention, due to the gradual depletion of deposits with high grade, making imperative the development of new high-efficiency collectors and mixtures of collectors to process complex minerals. In comparison to individual collectors, the use of mixtures has several notable benefits including lower dosage requirements, improved selectivity, rates and recovery and an increase in the recovery of coarse particles[3-9]. Moreover, in terms of cost and environmental issues, using collector mixtures can reduce the total amount of agents used, thus reducing the overall effect on the environment and economic costs without affecting the flotation performance. Therefore, the search for high-efficiency mixtures of collectors is still interesting and relevant."

Producing robust agglomerates with desirable structural properties is the key to success of the heap leaching of complex, low-grade nickel laterite ores. Mechanically strong but porous agglomerates with narrow size distribution (e.g., 5 ? 40 mm) are required to build permeable and perennially stable heaps of 4 ? 10 m height. The characterization of granules? microstructure is essential for greater understanding and correlation with the concomitant mechanical properties and robustness. In this study, we used non-destructive, computed X-Ray tomography analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in tandem with conventional compressive strength,and integrity/stability tests to draw links between nickel (Ni) laterite agglomerate strength/stability, internal microstructure (e.g.,porosity, inter-particle bridges) and binder type. It is shown that binder composition (e.g., tap water vs. 30% w/w H2SO4) and post-agglomeration drying both significantly impact on granules? physicochemical and microstructural properties. Acidic binder, in contrast with tap water, leads to significant incongruent leaching of different species from particles during ore-binder mixing and agglomeration. Upon wet agglomerate curing, solidified/recrystallized leached species form strong intra-granular solid bridges which, lead to greater compressive strength of dry agglomerates. Structural stability/integrity of cured agglomerates in acidic solution, however, decreases dramatically due to greater porosity and acid solubility of intra-granular solid bridges. These findings are useful in shedding more light on agglomerate structure characteristics and their optimization for enhanced column and heap leaching with concentrated sulphuric acid.

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

Carbonates have gained significant economic importance for the human kind. On one hand over a hundred uses are listed for carbonates. On the other hand, carbonates host base metal deposits. Although the carbonates play a significant part in the development of those deposits, in the mineral processing they consume acid and cause selectivity problems during flotation and leaching. Carbonates also accompany other industrial minerals as waste rock. For all those cases it necessary to find a technique to separate carbonate as early as possible in the processing chain. In this paper, the applicability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sorting for the separation of carbonates is discussed. NIRS sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique, in which particles are singularly detected by a sensor and then rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic process. This technique can for example be implemented in the process as a pre-concentration step for coarse particle sizes up to 300 mm. NIRS sorting discriminates among materials based on the difference that exist between their spectral properties in the near-infrared (NIR). Vibrations of molecular bonds in carbonates cause characteristic spectral properties in the NIR, which makes carbonates detectable, possible to identify, distinguish and separate from other rock materials. The spectral properties can also be used to distinguish between different carbonate minerals and mixtures. If the spectral variations are large enough for detection, sorting based on NIRS is possible. Feasibility studies on sensor-based separation of carbonates in the processing of talc, borate, fluorite, marble, zinc-oxides, copper sulphide and iron ore as well as the discrimination of calcite and dolomite mixtures are conducted and indicate the high potential of NIRS sorting in the minerals industry. Despite the fact that nickel (Ni) laterites accounts for about 60 % of the world?s nickel mineralization, commercial processing of complex, low grade Ni laterite ores by conventional beneficiation (e.g. magnetic, electrostatic and flotation separation) still presents intractable challenges, particularly in heap leaching. Invariably, low grade laterite ores require aggressive hydrometallurgical techniques (e.g., highly acidic lixiviant leaching at ambient or elevated temperatures) for Ni and cobalt (Co) extraction. As a precursor to heap leaching, agglomeration of the multi-mineral phase feed particles into robust and porous granules of 4-10 m permeable bed, is essential. In the present work, several basic and applied studies of the agglomeration behavior of real Ni laterite ores and selected oxides and clay minerals (hematite, quartz smectite and kaolinite) which constitute the predominant host gangue phases of typical laterite ores are performed. Isothermal, batch agglomeration tests involving sulphuric acid solution as a binder were carried out to produce coarse, narrow-sized (5 ? 40 mm) granules which were well characterized. The influential role of feed ore characteristics (e.g., mineralogy/chemistry and primary particle size distribution) and binder composition (30 vs. 44% w/w H2SO4) and dosage (15-25 wt.%) in agglomeration behavior and granule properties were examined through several characterization techniques including granule size, compressive strength, bed percolation and re-wetting stability and 3-dimensional micro-structure analyses. Links between feed mineralogy/chemistry and size, binder formulation, agglomeration behavior, curing conditions and final granule properties and structural characteristics are established. The implications of the findings to Ni laterite plant agglomeration for enhanced heap leaching are discussed. Declining gold grades, mineralogical complexity of ore bodies, increasing input costs, more stringent conditions in the licenses to operate, and uncertain gold price dynamics combine to exert significant ongoing pressure on margins of gold producers. Innovative approaches of extracting the metal from its ores are required to realize value from existing and future assets. In a conventional gold processing plant, size reduction of mined ore to produce floatable or leachable product is a significant cost contributor. A step change in cost reduction will be attained if radically energy efficient grinding approaches can be developed, replacing tumbling mills. In the path towards that goal, some quick wins are possible through waste rejection before grinding, and pre-treatment of mill feed to reduce grinding energy demands. Gold locked in complex mineralizations puts pressure on margins by increasing cost per oz (typically high $/t and low metal recoveries) in the hydrometallurgical steps. Gold miners are primarily price takers. The current narrow range of gold uses (predominantly investment and jewellery) is not an entirely desirable state. Some diversification into commercial uses would potentially be a price stabilizer. In this paper, promising research directions, some not always fully explored in the gold metallurgy research space, are highlighted to stimulate radical innovation for substantial value enhancements. The author strongly believes a shift from a traditionally conservative and incremental innovation approach to a more aggressive one, across all aspects of the gold metallurgy value stream (processes to products), is what the industry needs. The worldwide implementation of corrosion protection of low alloyed automotive metal sheets by zinc coating has led to supply shortages of zinc free non-alloyed steel scrap in the foundry industry. In a collaboration project, partly financed by the German government, with partners from the automotive industry, zinc metallurgy, scrap trading, foundry industry, and plant construction, a new acid-based pre-dezincification process has been developed, and a pilot plant with throughput of about 100 t/d has been put into operation at the Clausthal Umwelt-Institut GmbH (CUTEC) together with the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. During the treatment process, acid from a zinc metallurgical plant will be supplied, which can be recycled to the primary zinc extraction process after raising the zinc concentration to more than 130 g/L zinc. This way, the separation of small amounts of iron by precipitation and the electrolytic zinc winning are outsourced and, as a result, the pre-dezincification process runs waste-free. In Germany, the amount of zinc coated ?new scrap? is approx. 3 million t per year with a zinc content of approximately 60,000 t per year. The possible additional incomes for the dezincified steel scrap are in the order of ?40 to ?50 per ton of scrap, the gained zinc content during the acid dezincification defrays the costs of the process, if the throughput is more than 700 t/d. In comparison to conventional dezincification during the electro arc furnace process followed by upgrading in a rotary kiln (Waelz process), the acid dezincification process running at a maximum of 50°C will cut the energy costs by up to 74% and the CO2 emission by up to 88%. In fact, a demonstration plant is being designed right now and will be installed for processing a part of the zinc coated metal scrap from the Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany.
