For the highrise buildings with deep foundstion of irregular plane shape, an appropriate calculate model to the heave of foundation soil after excavation is proposed and studied using analytic method and FEM (Finite Element Method) respectively to provide an effective way for solving this kind engineering problem. Also combined with the practice of construction deep foundation of Capital Mansion, calculation of the heave of foundation soil after excavation is given. Compared these results from above two methods with the results measured in situ, it is conformal on the whole, and the results by FEM are much closer with the measured.

Some operations, due to the complexity and variety of their blasts, have extremely large inventories of conventional non electric products. The Dual Delay system has drastically reduced these inventories and has added an important element of versatility to blast designs.

EVEN though most of the program of the joint meeting at Easton, Pa., on Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. was devoted to the interests of combustion engineers rather than to coal-mining engineers, nevertheless the A.I.M.E. Coal Division was well represented, with 83, or close to one third of those in attendance giving this as their affiliation. The fuels division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers had 108 representatives, and an equal number reported no society affiliation. Added to the men's total registration was that of some twenty ladies so the total attendance was in the neighborhood of 325, exceeding that of the last two joint meetings, at Birmingham and Columbus, and equaling the 1938 crowd at Chicago.

The Bureau of Mines has determined the standard Gibbs energies (AGf°) of CoS1.035 (cobalt sulfide) and Ni2.515S2 (nickel sulfide) with high-temperature galvanic cells using stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, CoS1.035, CoO, S02(g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction C0S1.035(c) + 1.535 02(g, 0.0114 atm) = CoO(c) + 1.035 S02(g)¬ These results, combined with the best available data for ?Gf° of CoO and S02 from the literature, give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of CoS1.035 for the reaction Co(c) + 0 5175 S2(g) = CoS1.035(c) ?Gf° = -38.890 + 18.87 x 10-3T ± 0.185 kcal/mole (866.0 - 1,104.9 K), where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, N12.515S2, NiO, S02(g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0122 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction Ni2.515S2(c) + 3.2575 02(g, 0.0122 atm) = 2.515 NiO(c) + 2 S02(g). Combination of these results with data for ?Gfo of NiO and S02 from the literature yields the standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ni2.515S2 for the reaction 2.515 Ni(c) + S2(g) = Ni2.S1SS2(c) ?Gf° -65.377 + 24.67 x 10-3T ± 0.541 kcal/mole (968.6 -1,053.7 K).

The MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project includes three main work shafts, excavated primarily in rock. Shaft L is 9.8 m (32 ft) diameter and 124.1 m (407 ft)deep. Shaft E is 7.0 by 12.8 m (23 by 42 ft) and 91.4 m (300 ft) deep. Shaft 5A is 7.9m (26 ft) diameter and 72.5 m (238 ft) deep. Construction methods are compared and contrasted. Lessons learned involve a differing site condition in soil overburden, contractor-proposed modifications, and remedial slurry wall work. Other aspects discussed include noise and vibration control, groundwater inflow, water treatment, muck handling and contract administration issues.

Anthracite is widely known as a domestic or space heating fuel. The prevailing market ratio of domestic to industrial consumption was about 80 to 20 up until 1950. Since then it has been shifting until now the ratio index is about 50/50, exclusive of overseas export. Despite a declining domestic space heating market, the demand for industrial anthracite remains good. However, as a result of stringent air pollution regulations, there is a renewed interest in this low sulphur coal which cannot smoke under any conditions. Anthracite serves other important industries such as power generating, metallurgical, cement, ceramic, chemical, water sewage and industrial wastes filtration. Anthracite is an excellent natural source of carbon and may be utilized in many processes.

In this study Pt-Al thin films were prepared via electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) with an atomic concentration ratio of Pt25:Al75. These films were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 150°C to 650°C for annealing times from 4 to 60 minutes. The resulting microstructure of these thin films were obtained via secondary electron imaging used in conjunction with depth profiling with the aid of scanning auger microscopy (PHI 700).Elemental maps of the micrographs were obtained. Simulations, based on a chemical potential Monte Carlo method1, were run for various interaction parameters. From these simulations theoretical depth-profiles and proposed microstructures were obtained. These were compared to the experimentally measured depth profiles and elemental maps. Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

Typical copper electrorefining electrolyte contains tens of grams of copper, some nickel and a wide variety of impurities. Some of these impurities comprise trace amounts of dissolved precious metals like Ag, Pd and Pt that currently are not fully exploited. This study presents an electrochemical method to recover precious metals via a combined electrodeposition-redox replacement (EDRR) process, where energy is used only to deposit copper during the ED-step, while the RR-step relies on the spontaneous replacement of copper by the precious metals (i.e. cementation). In order to conduct the recovery successfully, process parameters such as deposition potential (EDE), deposition time (tDE), redox replacement time (tRR) and the number of cycles (n) was adjusted. Investigations performed in synthetic electrolyte (40 g/L Cu, Ag = 10 ppm) proved the possibility to recover a high purity silver. Short deposition times (tDE) were found to result in small Cu particles that provided a suitably high surface area for silver cementation. In addition, experiments performed in real industrial electrolytes containing 44 g/L Cu and 54 ppb Ag (Boliden Harjavalta, Pori), demonstrated that EDRR could attain Ag recoveries of between 46–67% in an energy efficient, additive-free manner. INTRODUCTION The raw materials used in the state-of-art primary and secondary copper smelters contain mainly base metals, but also notable amounts of Ag, Pt and other precious metals. These valuable metals distribute mostly into the copper matte during the pyrometallurgical treatment (Tirronen et al., 2017) and end up into the cast anodes. During the electrorefining stage, metals more noble than copper such as gold and platinum, are not dissolved but enrich into the anode slimes. In contrast, silver may dissolve slightly and thus, minor chloride addition is used to retain silver in the slime as sparingly soluble AgCl. Moreover, other metals less noble than copper may also dissolve, such as nickel. Therefore the electrolytes used in electrorefining typically contain substantial amounts of copper, nickel and even arsenic as well as minor metals such as antimony and bismuth. In the Boliden electrorefinery these were reported to be in the magnitude of 51.2– 60.4 g/L of Cu, 10.9–15.8 g/L Ni, 7.2–15.9 As, 0.2–0.4 Sb and 0.1–0.4 Bi with an associated sulfuric acid concentration of 139–155 g/L (Lehtiniemi et al., 2018). Copper is the most noble of the dominating base metals in the electrolyte and is thus deposited on the cathode as 99.99% purity LME-A grade. Anode slimes are collected and subjected to precious metals treatment e.g. via pressure leaching—selenium recovery— Doré smelting—Ag refining—Au/Pt/Pd leaching and reduction process (Ludvigsson & Larsson, 2003). The Pori refinery, operating in Finland since 1941, not only produces 133 000 t Cu cathode and 2300 t nickel sulphate annually but also 66 t silver, 4.6 t gold and palladium and platinum (in year 2017).

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Federal Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and nil stifle.5 The. Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because anal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form Will Ire valuable. The material will he presented in three parts. as follows I. United Stares Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Other Foreign Patents. Part I appeared in early 1960. Part II follows.

The heats of formation of goethite, ferrous vanadate, and manganese molybdate at 298.15° K were determined by solution calorimetry. For formation from the elements, the heat values were -133.7 ±0.3 kcal/mole for goethite, -453.8 ±0.5 kcal/mole for ferrous vanadate, and -284.8 ±0.2 kcal/mole for manganese molybdate. For formation from the oxides, the heat values were -0.9 ±0.1 kca1/mole for goethite, -19.4 ±0.3 kca1/mole for ferrous vanadate, and -14.6 ±O.l kcal/mole for manganese molybdate.

For lead, it is 1% free and 25 cents per unit above that. Lead is a much more harmful impurity than zinc because it tends to recycle more in the smelter circuit and creates a greater health hazard in the plant.E. Gasoline has become of such commercial and military importance that it is now practically indispensable. This product is of special interest because, in addition to realizing its value, the Nation is learn- ing that the raw materials from which gasoline is obtained are not unlimited. ACTIVITIES OF THE BUREAU OF MINES IN PROMOTING EFFICIENCY IN THE PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION OF GASOLINE. The Bureau of Mines has directly and indirectly worked for the conservation and efficient utilization of this important product. Some of the bureau's activities have been along lines widely different from those reported in this bulletin. The work of the bureau toward the increase in efficiency of processes for the production and refining of crude oil is too well known to need mention here. Another line of activity in which the bureau has engaged is the collection and publi- cation of statistics on refinery operations. Finally, as immediate preparation for the present bulletin, two surveys of the gasoline mar- keting situation have been made. The primary object of this bul- letin is to make available to the public information obtained in con- nection with these surveys. PURPOSE OF THE GASOLINE SURVEYS OF 1917 AND 1919. Shortly after the United States declared war on Germany the bureau collected gasoline samples in the retail market throughout various parts of the country. Information regarding the sources of these gasolines and the details of marketing them was obtained, and they were subjected to analytical tests which furnished conclusive informa- tion regarding their properties. The information obtained through this survey proved of inestimable value both to the bureau and the United States Fuel Administration, particularly in drawing up speci- fications and in ascertaining the best means of obtaining supplies of particular types of gasoline that were needed. A similar and more extensive survey was made in the months of April and May, 1919, in order to obtain data needed for the revision of the Federal motor gasoline specification. The specification adopted during the war had been the subject of numerous complaints, and it seemed desirable to determine whether or not these objections were valid before attempting revision.
