Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

THE meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sept. 12 to 15, inclusive, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute. It was at Wilkes-Barre, in 1871, that the foundation was laid for the great institution that now includes in its roster the greatest names. in mining engineering in every civilized country of the world. The founders of the Institute, with rare prescience, established a common ground upon which all mining engineers, whatever particular branch they might consider most pertinent, could stand securely, assured of a deep-seated interest from their brethren similarly minded in other localities. So wise and clear was the vision of the founders that every engineer connected with mining has found it beneficial, not to say indispensable, to maintain his connection with the Institute and to increase his technical enthusiasm through the medium of the valuable technical publications. The little coterie of 1871 has grown to a strong body of more than 10,000 members in 1921, reflecting the glory of the founders in the record of the accomplishments written on the pages of the fifty years of the

Seismic areas were in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet plain, whose structures were complicated, mainly composed of Maowen fault, Yingxiu fault and Pengxian-guanxian fault. The rapid rise of the Qinghai-Tibet plain led the crustal material of the eastern edge to move to the southeast along the faults on a large scale since the late Cenozoic; Minshan block structure and Long Men Mountain tectonic zone represented the strong nappe thrust movement as the east boundary of Chuanqing slip block; the stress was accumulating when squeezed, which to a certain extent resulted in breakdown of the crust, and earthquakes. The shock speed, high-energy accumulation, and the reversed dextrorotation of the earthquake fault characteristics et al. happened, which caused the development of secondary geological disastersts. According to on-site investigation, the typical geological disasters had thrust rock collapse, the instability deposit, the revival of potential debris flow et al. whose genetic model had been analysed.

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. A great deal is known, in a qualitative sense, about the performance of CMI EB-36 centrifuges. The manufacturer can give reliable guidance for the proper operation of its centrifuges and can give general estimates of expected product moisture and recovery. Quantitative estimates of the effects of changes in the various operating parameters are more difficult to find. The engineer faced with designing a preparation plant may be without the specific data needed to make decisions. For example, to obtain optimum product moisture when drying 9.5 mm X 595 µm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) coal the centrifuge manufacturer recommends having no more than 5% -595 µm (-28 mesh) material in the centrifuge feed. They know that more -595 µm (-28 mesh)material in the feed will cause higher product moistures, but they usually cannot quantify the increased moisture or describe the shape of the product moisture versus -595 µm (-28 mesh) in the feed curve. This study was conceived to provide quantitative information on the EB-36 centrifuges, focusing on product moisture, recovery, and size degradation. All of the centrifuges tested were Model EB-36 dryers from Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries Inc. (CMI), with feeds in the nominal 9.5 mm x 595 pm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) range. These are typical centrifugal dryers in this application, and many were available for testing.

[The present study has investigated the extraction of copper from a chalcopyrite flotation concentrate using an adapted strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and shake flasks, tank leaching and Warburg respirometer techniques. From the shake flask experiments, the activation energy and the frequency factor have been determined to be ?ka = 59.4 kJ and A = 3.3 x 105 S-1, respectively. The temperature coefficient was found to be Q10 = 2.2 in the range of 20 to 35°C. It was suggested that the reaction mechanism of chalcopyrite leaching by T. ferrooxidans involves the formation of an activated complex. whose thermodynamic values have been calculated to be ?G? = 92.1 kJ, ?S? -148.8 J K-1 and ?H$ = 47.8 kJ. The maximum volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient for the reactor leaching was found to be achieved by using an optimum air flow rate of 1970 cm min l at a rotational frequency of 1000 min-1. The highest copper extraction in tank (reactor) leaching experiment was 86.8% after 17 days of leaching, while in the sterile runs the corresponding copper extraction was only 40.1%. The copper extraction was suggested to be diffusion controlled. The power requirement of the aerated reactor was calculated to be Pg = 2.02 watts. During leaching, the oxygen saturation concentration was found to be C* = 6.70 mg dm-3. Using the gassing out method the critical oxygen concentration was assessed to be CCrit 0.05 mg dm 3. From the Warburg experiments, the kinetic parameters of the Monad equation were derived with a new evaluation technique to be Vmsp = 9.0 µm3 02 min-1 mg protein-1 and K = 7.4% pulp density for the effect of substrate concentration. The order of reaction and the overall reaction rate constant were determined from the modified van't Hoff plot to be n = 0.0 and k = 1.49 p dm3 02 min-1 mg Protein -1 for the chalcopyrite concentrate oxidation by T. ferrooxidans. On the basis of this experimental work, a preliminary flow sheet has been proposed for the bioextraction of copper from flotation concentrates.]

The proposed Gautrain Rapid Rail Link (GRRL) will require approximately 15 km of double or twin high-speed rail track tunnels located for the greater part beneath the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, including Houghton, Rosebank and Sandton. During the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) it became clear that potential surface vibration above and in the vicinity of the tunnels was a matter of serious concern to the residents of the affected properties and that the impact required assessment. The general method proposed is based on a US Department of Transportation, 1998, publication in which abase vibration curve derived for typical high-speed passenger trains is adjusted for the topological, geological and other features to predict the surface vibration and the associated ground-borne noise. The predictions indicate that some isolated areas might be impacted but that the impact will likely be limited, and it is possible to mitigate the impact using suitable track construction methods and track support systems.

This paper compares the modeling results obtained by using a single seed waveform (SS) versus multiple seed waveforms (MS) as inputs to the Multiple Seed Waveform (MSW) blast vibration model. The field data for the comparison was collected at a coal mine. The results of the comparison showed that the MSW model yields more accurate predictions and significantly higher correlation to field measurement when using MS as input. When using a single seed waveform as input, different seed waves result in different predictions of PPV. In contrast, using the multiple seed waveforms as an input, more consistent results are obtained.

At the 1990 Symposium of the Society of Explosives Engineering, D.T. Froedge, President of GeoSonics Inc., presented a paper entitled "Differential Topographic Vibration Isomapping", which detailed the capabilities of GeoSonics' new Iso-Seismic Service. In this paper Mr. Froedge described how one hundred or &ore free-standing miniature seismographs called Micro-Seis Units, randomly positioned around a blast, could accurately reveal the effects of sub-strata geology on surface ground vibrations. The paper went on to note the "regression analysis of scaled distance versus recorded particle velocity" as being an inadequate predictor of peak particle velocity. This is due to the fact that the calculated "regression analysis" formula for any site is predicted on the wars; case assumption because of a homogeneous and symmetrical sub-strata geology, a condition that rarely, if ever, exists.

RECENT papers by Williams, Sherwood, and Boothby,1 Seybolt et al.2 Heikes; and Roberts4 attest to the increasing importance of the hexagonal ferromagnetic compound MnBi. Since the magnetic properties of MnBi crystals are highly anisotropic, it is useful and necessary to have appropriate aids for determining their orientations—a (00.1) standard stereographic projection and a corresponding table of crystallographic angles for this structure. The tables of crystallographic angles for the hexagonal system available in the literature5 are computed for c/a ratios greater than that of MnBi and cannot satisfactorily be used to find the crystallographic angles of MnBi. A table of angles between the crystallographic planes (HK.L) and (hk.1) was calculated for MnBi from the formula0 F=are cos Hh+Kk+ 1/2(Hk+hK) + 3/4 (a/c)2Ll/v(H2 + K2 + HK + 3/4 (a/c)2L2) (h2+ k2+hk + 3/4 (a/c)2l2) on an IBM Type 650 Magnetic Drum Data Processing machine. The lattice constants used are listed in Table I and are those determined by Willis and Rooksby7 at 20°C. More recently published values obtained by both X-ray and neutron diffraction"' show no difference from these significant to the calculation. From the crystallographic angles between the basal plane (00.1) and the general plane (hk.1) in Table I, an (00.1) standard stereographic projection was made for MnBi which is shown in Fig. 1. The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which include tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased in 1993. The increase in the value of tripoli production was the result of an increase in total production. Special silica stone experienced an increase in unit value but decrease in the quantity produced. Garnet showed a 19 % decrease in quantity and an 8 % decrease in value. Staurolite increased about 51 % in the quantity produced and 136 % in value compared with those of 1992. Staurolite's significant increase in value of production resulted from a 56 % increase in the unit value. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed an 8 % decrease in the quantity produced and a 13 % decrease in the value of production. The silicon carbide industry saw an 11 % decrease in the quantity produced and an 8 % decrease in the value of production. Combined, the industries decreased 9 % in quantity and 11 % in value compared with those of 1992.

Oil and gas are minerals and so long as they remain in place they belong to the owner of the land under which they are found and such owner has the right to explore for the oil and gas on or under his land and when found to remove and possess the same. Kimbley v. Luckey, Okla. - 179 Pacific 928, p. 831. OWNERSHIP OF MINERALS LACHES NO BAR. The owner of minerals in land can not be barred by laches for failing to assert his ownership where his title had not been ques- tioned and his right invaded. No lapse of time bars one's right to property and it is only in case his right has been invaded that it can be barred by laches.
