The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

This regional report covers the mineral industries of Canada and 40 countries and areas in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1990 and 1991. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.

The paper deals with new approach for measurement and evaluation of chemical microheterogeneity of elements in polycomponent metallic systems (i. e. steels, Ni-alloys). The method is based on the original mathematical model for determination of distribution curves of dendritic segregation of selected elements and on the original mathematical model for determination of the effective partition coefficients of these elements in the structure of analyzed alloy. Application of the method at research of chemical heterogeneity of continuously cast steel slab is also presented. The original results of measurement of dendritic microheterogeneity of eight elements (Al, Si, P, S, Ti, Cr, Mn and Fe) in structure of nine zones of a transversal section of slab are given.

Recent exploration for mesothermal gold deposits in the Otago Schist has focussed largely on extensions of, or analogies to, the reverse fault-hosted Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone deposit. Abundant normal fault-hosted mesothermal and epithermal vein deposits in the Otago Schist have attracted less attention, largely because they have limited lateral extent and steeper dips. Northwest-striking normal fault-hosted vein sets near Barewood and Hindon in east Otago crosscut schist foliation on the Barewood-Hindon plateau at a high angle along a combined strike length in excess of 20 kilometres. The trend of the vein sets is not linear, but rather contains several right lateral steps. Almost all veins dip steeply to the northeast. Angular discordance between schist foliation and the plateau surface along the trend increases from near zero at the northwest end of the veins to about 30¦ at the southeast end. Vale Inco Ltd. is trialing several energy conservation initiatives in an effort to minimize costs and reduce green house gas emissions. The Ventilation on Demand (VOD) concept is a major project being carried out in various phases at Vale Inco mines. Due to the complex nature of a dynamic VOD system, Vale Inco is taking a systematic approach of testing VOD system components with milestone evaluations of each project. Coleman Mine was selected to pilot test the functionality and robustness of automated louvers in the underground environment; with the goal of optimizing mine airflow such that ventilation would be available for developing a new ore body. This project involved installing automated louvers in the exhaust raises; and installing variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on auxiliary supply fans. Because the VOD project created efficient utilization of the ventilation air in the 153 OB, the 170 OB is currently being developed without increasing the total fresh air into the mine. This paper describes the louver system component of VOD as applied at the mine.

An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

Previous measurements of the thermoelectric power of ionic crystals are reviewed briefly. It is concluded that, while extensive measurerements are available on systems in which the electrode M has a cation in cornon with the sall MX, there is as yet little modern work on systems in which the metal electrode M' does not haue a calion in common with the salt. We haue now measured the thermoelectric power of- single cryslals of KC1 and of KC1 + SrCl2 between plati.nu?n electrodes over a much wider range of temperature than before. individual ionic heats of transport, which, while probably not very accurate, are of a reasonable order of magnitude, are obtained from this data on the basis of an assumption that charge carriers do not cross the electrode/salt interface. RELATIVELY little work has been done on thermal diffusion in ionic crystals. Reinhold and coworkers1-I measured the thermoelectric power and Soret effect in silver and cuprous salts and their mixed crystals. One electrode was kept at constant temperature and electromotive force was measured as a function of the temperature gradient. This is not a satisfactory technique if the results are to be compared with theory; rather should the electromotive force be measured for small temperature differences as a function of the mean temperature of the two electrodes. They used electrodes having the same cation as the salt. Patrick and Lawsons measured the thermoelectric power of AgBr and of AgBr containing 0.25 mole pct CdBr2 using silver electrodes and temperature gradients of 10°C in the temperature range 100° to 400°C. The results were analyzed using the Teltow9 values of the ratio of the mobility of the two types of charge carrier (cation vacancies and interstitials) found from conductance measurements and the wagnerlo estimate of the heterogeneous contribution to the thermopower, Ohet They obtained values of qi = 0.017 ev and q$ = -0.385 ev for the heats of transport of interstitial Ag ions and cation vacancies, respectively. Their data has been reanalyzed by Haga using the corrections to the Wagner formula for ehet given by Howard andLidiard; Haga found ev. Christy et a1.14 have measured the thermopower of AgBr containing 0.01 to 1.0 mole pct CdBr,. They analyzed their results in terms of the theory of Howard and Lidiard and found that excellent agreement with the theory was obtained if q5 + : + hF was set equal to 0.70 ev at 175°C and equal to 0.58 ev at 250°C. Since Teltow's value for hF, the enthalpy of formation of a Frenkel defect pair, is 1.27 ev, this means that qt + q: increases in magnitude from -0.57 ev at 175°C to -0.69 ev at 250°C. This result is in poor agreement with Patrick and Lawson's value of -0.37 ev for pure AgBr (for which the corrections to the Wagner estimate for ehet are very small). christy1' has also reported thermopower measurements for pure silver halides and for the systems he finds that qr + qt for AgBr increases in magnitude from about -0.55 ev at 150°C to about -1.1 ev at 400°C. The temperature dependence of the sum of the heats of transport in AgCl is very similar in magnitude. The sum qi + q cannot be decomposed into the individual interstitial and vacancy heats of transport without a knowledge of the entropy contribution from the change in the lattice vibrational frequencies around the interstitial and vacancy. Despite this it seems an inescapable conclusion from Christy's analysis that and -6 = Q Ag are quite strongly temperature-de pendent and that -q: is much greater in magnitude than the corresponding activation energy for vacancy migration, +0.37 ev. It remains a mystery as to why the data for pure AgBr are fitted so well by the assumption of temperature-independent heats of transport if association of impurity ions and vacancies is neglected.l The values for q$ and q: so obtained are also much more in line with those expected from a simple kinetic interpretation of the heats of transport due to wirtz.17 Christy and Hsueh have also measured the thermopower of CuCl between copper electrodes; 0 for pure CuCl is comparable with that for the silver halides but, owing to the limited solubility of divalent cation impurities it was not found possible to deduce values for the heats of transport. In contrast to these extensive measurements on cells of the type M MX 1 M, there have been relatively few attempts to measure the thermoelectric power of cells of the form M' 1 MX I M'. (We specifically exclude from discussion cells of this type in which the metal electrodes M' are in contact with gas containing a controlled partial pressure of either M or X,, since in these cells the electrochemical reactions are analogous to those of the first type.) The thermoelectric power of Pb12, PbC12, TlC1, TlBr, TlI, NaNO3, and KNO 3 between platinum electrodes was measured by Thie1e.l3 In discussing these measurements Holtan20 asserts that the thermopotential initially fluctuated wildly and even changed sign before approaching a steady value. A high degree of irreproducibility is also evident in the work of Nikitinskaya and Murin21 who first studied the thermopower of NaCl and KC1 between platinum electrodes. Much better reproduci-bility was achieved in our earlier measurements on KC1;22 these were, however, confined to a relatively narrow temperature range and one of the objects of the work reported in this paper was to extend the temperature range of the measurements of the thermoelectric power 8 of KC1. The area between Merrygoen and Digilah is located on a structural high that separates the Sydney Basin from the Great Artesian Basin, and hence the stratigraphic succession of younger rocks overlying the basement is relatively thin. The stratigraphy is briefly described and it is shown that fluvial sedimentation prevailed from Upper Permian through to Middle Jurassic times. Flint clays occur in the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic but only those in the Jurassic appear to have commercial value at present. The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of the flint clays are discussed.

Les remblais en pâte cimentés sont de plus en plus utilisés dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Une autre alternative d?utilisation du remblai en pâte consiste à le pomper et à le stocker dans des empilements de surface. En plus d?avoir des avantages d?un point de vue de stabilité physique des ouvrages, le remblai en pâte cimenté en surface permettrait également de stabiliser les contaminants dans la matrice du remblai à l?aide du processus de solidification et de stabilisation. Dans cette étude, des remblais en pâte constitués d?un résidu minier sulfuré renfermant beaucoup d?arsenic et de différents liants ont été testés afin d?évaluer la stabilisation des contaminants dans la matrice de remblai. La méthode utilisée pour évaluer la stabilisation et la solidification des contaminants est le test de lixiviation en extracteur de Soxhlet. Les résultats géochimiques issus de ces essais ainsi que la caractérisation chimico-minéralogique des remblais lixiviés ont été analysés pour comprendre les phénomènes chimiques présents dans les remblais durant le temps de cure. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sulfures présents dans les remblais étudiés (pyrite FeS2 et arsénopyrite FeAsS) s?oxydent et provoquent la dissolution des hydrates les plus vulnérables (dissolution de la portlandite Ca(OH)2 et/ou décalcification des gels CSH). Le calcium produit permet de précipiter les sulfates (essentiellement sous forme de gypse plus ou moins hydraté) et l?arsenic sous forme d?arséniates de calcium plus stables. Les différents liants utilisés donnent des résultats différents en termes de stabilisation et de solidification qui seront discutés dans cet article.

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

"The largest cost centres of the David Bell Mine concentrator are grinding, leaching and effluent treatment. Optimizing results during the 6th year of operation are listed below: o SAG mill slurry density control and operating strategies improved liner life and media consumption by 10 and 25%, respectively.o Poly-met liners clad the SAG mill except for the feed end. Lower noise levels and reduced mill downtime have resulted in an improved and more efficient workplace (time required for liner changes is 2 to 3%).o A comparative grinding media study using seven different marked media at the same time showed media wear rates range 120 to 198 mg/kWh and ball mill charge replacement frequencies of 8.3 to 13.1 per year, and that a meaningful wear test must include all media to be tested at the same time in the same mill. High quality carbon steel cylinders had the best economics.o Pre-aeration, using pure gaseous oxygen is accomplished in pipe reactors. Small bubble generators provide oxygen in the first three leach tanks. 1500 to 3000 kg of oxygen is consumed per day. Leach kinetics have improved and trends indicate increases in gold recovery of three to seven ounces per day at reduced costs. Effects of reduced cyanidation of accessory metals on the effluent treatment plant will be discussed in a separate paper."

Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits in ancient, submarine volcanic belts of Australia include mound, lens and sheet-style Zn-rich polymetallic deposits, massive and disseminated pyritic Cu-Au deposits and disseminated, stratabound Au-only deposits. Variation in morphologies, metal ratios, volcanic environments and alteration features indicates there exists a spectrum of deposits from the classic VHMS model, to hybrids between VHMS-porphyry Cu and VHMS-epithermal end members. Zn-rich, polymetallic deposits form eitheron, or just below, the seafloor, whereas the Cu-Au and Au-only deposits form sub-seafloor by replacement of specific volcanic lithologies. Alteration zoned outwards from quartz -> chlorite -> sericite ¦ carbonate is typical of VHMS deposits across the spectrum. Quartz and carbonate alteration is dominant in the Au-only systems,chlorite alteration is commonly developed close to Cu-rich ores, and sericite and carbonate alteration zones are well developed in the stratiform Zn-rich ores. The most useful geochemical vectors for Zn-rich ores are the alteration index [AI=100(MgO + K2O)/(MgO + K2O + CaO + Na2O)], the chlorite-carbonate-pyrite index [CCPI=100(MgO + FeO)/(MgO + FeO + K2O + Na2O)], Mn content of carbonate, Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio of chlorite,whole-rock Tl, Sb and Ba/Sr ratio, S34S of pyrite, and whole-rock S18O. The most useful vectors for pyritic Cu-Au ores are AI, CCPI, S/Na2O ratio, Na content of white mica, and Fe content of carbonate.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

Historically, miners have known that roof rocks originally composed largely of mud were prone to slaking and deterioration when exposed to water and humidity. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show that roof falls are more prevalent in summer and late fall. Field data shows higher bolt loads and increased room convergence in summer months. Laboratory data shows that very high internal pressures can be generated by significant strain in clay-rich rocks. In summer months humidities ranging from 70-100% can cause rock strains up to 7%, and rock pressures of 14,000 psi, more than enough to break apart weak shales and fireclays. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted wet/dry immersion cycling of clay-rich rocks. Results show that the rocks most prone to moisture deterioration are fireclays, claystones, and sandy shales, all of which have disrupted bedding. Of the 7 mudrocks with a weatherability index above 40%, none showed consistent fissile bedding. Black shales were surprisingly resistant to wet/dry water immersion cycling. Generally, mixed rocks (stackrock), typically susceptible to horizontal stress, are more resistant to moisture-deterioration. Mine roof rocks tested with moisture sensitivity ratings above 50% (moisture sensitivity index ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the most sensitive) all came from mines which had roof skin problems and used supplemental support to prevent rock fall injuries. Some roof rocks showed lateral variability of moisture sensitivity values, suggesting the need for more samples in highly varying roof rocks. Swelling strains of mudrocks showed that almost all of the swelling occurred in the first 24 hours after immersion. The wet/dry immersion cycling test used provides an accurate, quick and inexpensive method for estimating the moisture sensitivity of mudrocks. With this information mine operators can begin to anticipate hazardous ground and prepare appropriate roof support.

"This paper gives a brief introduction and presents recent enhancements in the MillMapper technology developed for thickness gauging and condition monitoring of liners in grinding mills used for mineral comminution. It also introduces the recent expansion of MillMapper functionality aimed at mill operational optimization. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces at feed, shell, and discharge ends with millimeter accuracy. Data capture takes nominally 5 minutes, hence interruption to mill operation is negligible.The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and discussion of recentlyimplemented innovations such as liner change out forecasting, automatic ball charge volume and weight measurement, and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement for mill operational control or load cell calibration are presented. Combined weight information provides control over load related issues such as load fill levels for relining, or start-up load after reline. Feature descriptions are followed by a listing of the numerous advantages over existing techniques and the benefits to operations. Results from the application of MillMapper are presented throughout.INTRODUCTIONThe need for thickness gauging of liners of grinding mills used for mineral comminution is well known but the task is rarely completed to a satisfactory standard. Liner failure resulting from excessive wear can have expensive consequences. Furthermore, mill performance as well as liner wear are known to be correlated to lifter bar geometry (Napier-Munn et al., 1999; Rajamanni et al., 2005). At present, the following techniques are routinely used to gauge the thickness of mill liners:1. Visual inspection;2. Ultrasonic thickness gauging (for steel liners); and3. Physical inspection (e.g. nail inserted in rubber liners)"
