"The Las Cristinas deposit contains about 10.2 million ounces of gold at a grade of 1.3 g/t. The deposit comprises a layer of fully oxidized saprolite (SAPO), a layer of sulphide-enriched saprolite (SAPS), carbonate leached bedrock (CLB) and carbonate stable or un-leached bedrock (CSB). Gold occurs at about the same level in all lithological groups. The bedrock units contain minor amounts of copper (about 0.1%) as chalcopyrite, while SAPO contains virtually no copper it having been leached and deposited in the SAPS zone.A previous owner started investigation of the Las Cristinas deposit in Venezuela in 1991. Over the next seven years, 1174 holes with a total length of 159 km were drilled, extensive metallurgical testwork, including pilot plant operations, were conducted and feasibility studies were completed. Construction was started in 1997 and again in 1999 but was suspended.Crystallex has been producing gold in Venezuela since the early 1990’s. In 1997, Crystallex acquired Inversora Mael which had held two of the claims to the Las Cristinas concessions since 1986. In September 2002, Crystallex entered into a definitive agreement with the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana, (CVG), to develop the Las Cristinas deposit.An extensive program of studies and testwork was started in early 2003 to determine an optimum development plan for Las Cristinas. Mine Development Associates, SNC–Lavalin Engineers and Constructors, SGS Lakefield Research Limited, J.R. Goode and Associates, and Professor A. Laplante at McGill University acted as the main contractors.Because of the potential value of by-product copper, earlier flowsheets used carbon-in-leach for SAPO, but processed all other ore types by flotation to produce a gold-copper concentrate with cyanide leaching of cleaner tailings to maximize gold recovery. Cyanide recovery was necessitated by the high copper content of the leach feed. Initial studies of available data by Crystallex revealed that direct leaching of all ore types would provide about 11% more gold recovery than the previously selected flotation route with reduced capital and operating costs.Bench and pilot scale studies have confirmed that a SAG-ball mill-gravity-CIL route is very effective for all ore types and will give about 89% gold recovery. Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

In exploiting the ultra-deep, narrow reef ore bodies of the Witwatersrand, the ventilation and cooling systems within the stopes play a critical role because of high concentrations of active workers. This paper examines the heat, ventilation and cooling effects of a number of different stoping layouts for narrow reef mining in ultra-deep operations in very hot rock. The stope ventilation and cooling needs are driven primarily by the difference between the air temperature and that of the rock front being excavated. These needs depend on the face utilization, geometry, face advance (rate and direction), layout, backfill, use of water and machinery1,2,3. Detailed studies of different stoping configurations have been undertaken for mining operations extending to depths of 5000m below surface, where virgin rock temperatures approach 70°C. Extensive work has been completed with regard to evaluating ventilation and cooling requirements to maintain air reject temperatures of 28°C wet-bulb and better. This knowledge is being used to determine overall cooling requirements, reduce operational costs and maximize the efficiency of cooling systems. These issues are important when considering both the local and regional air conditioning systems and the most effective application of in-stope chilled water.

The effect of composition on electrical conductivity (resistivity), viscosity and liquidus temperature of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing suphide concentrates is reviewed along with the relationsip between slag composition, slag-matte separation and metal losses to slag. Optimization of slag composition at furnace temperature is attempted on the basis of opposite and parabolic trends of the viscosity-conductivity relationships of the slags. The importance of surface tension of slags is emphasized using available and estimated information, which are grouped into a useful correlation. These values are coupled with or incorporated into slag viscosity plots to illustrate the correlation between the two factors which influence slag-matte separation as well as refractory attack. The electrode in the slag-resistance furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power. The obvious parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath, which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles, which in turn affect flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag and matte isdiscussed in conjunction with the furnace geometry, stirring action of the electrodes, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects. The action of the electric furnace as a settler is discussed. The rectangular furnace is considered as a channel reactor in this analysis and the action of the electrodes is described to indicate a balanced settling rate in the area of electrode action. Discussion of the design and production capacity of the electric furnace with reference to operating current, power input, furnace dimensions and electrode size are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties such as its resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature.

Two dry docks are currently under construction on the northern banks of the Persian Gulf by Iran Shipyard and Offshore Industries Co. (ISOICO). The construction of these dry docks forms a huge civil offshore project. The foundation system include more than 6500 large diameter (40-48 inch) spiral pipe piles with embedded depth varying from 18 to 25 meters. Extensive geotechnical subsurface investigations were carried out in the project site in order to provide enough information and proper perspective on the underlying soil layers. The results of geotechnical investigation indicated that a 20 m thick dense silty sand layer exist which can be considered as the main bearing stratum. Due to short clear distance between the piles (less than 3 m) refusal occurred for some piles, accordingly led to actual length less than their design length. To verify and in-situ evaluation of piles capacity, static and dynamic full scale loading tests programme were performed. The data from 40 static compression and tension and also 50 dynamic tests with PDA were interpreted and analyzed by current approaches and CAPWAP software. The results of analysis demonstrated that the safety factor of bearing capacity of piles must be increased to reach a safety factor of about 1.8. To achieve this purpose the interaction of combined piled-raft system has been realized.

Choosing the correct delay time for many blasting applications is an important and critical blast design parameter for controlling fragmentation, muckpile shape, swell, digability, throw, ground vibration and airblast. BAl and its affiliates have monitored thousands of full scale blasts in a variety of field conditions, spanning over 15 countries, with sophisticated blast monitoring instrumentation. In some blast environments, a small change in the choice of delay times used had a dramatic and pronounced effect on the overall blast results. In other blast environments, large changes in the choice of delays used had absolutely no effect on the final results in terms of specific outputs. In environments which were sensitive to the delay selection, the type of explosive, dynamic response time of the rock mass (TMIN), integrity of the material, burden and rock mass geometry, all played a very important ,role.

"A 2400 acre extension to the existing Tailings Area is under development at Inco's Copper Cliff Milling operations.The new area is being developed in stages as production levels dictate thus minimizing immediate capital expenditures while permitting disposal operations to proceed as further site work progresses.The first stage of the new storage site will be fully operational by early 1987 and will include a 400 acre site specific to the storage of Pyrrhotite rejected from milling circuits. The Pyrrhotite site is located in the centre of the Tailings area and is designed for water cover throughout much of its projected life.The new development incorporates perimeter dams designed to operate with low phreatic levels for maximum structural stability. Acid seepage water is collected behind secondary impermeable dams for return to the Tailings Pond.Tailings are deposited by up-stream methods permitting segregation of coarse fractions for use in future lifts of the perimeter dams."

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

The United States Capitol Visitor Center (USCVC) is one of the largest underground structures ever constructed in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. The 600,000 ft2 (55,750 m2) structure is entirely underground and immediately adjacent to the shallow foundations of the existing U.S. Capitol building. Interior building columns for the USCVC were supported on 186 drilled shafts that varied in diameter from 4 to 9 ft (1.2 to 2.9 m) and in length from 15 to 45 ft (4.6 to 13.7 m). The vast majority of the building utilities were located beneath the basement floor slab. It was decided at the onset of the project to proceed with construction prior to completion of the design drawings, and coordination between the underslab utilities and the drilled shafts had not yet been finalized at the onset of drilled shaft installation. Given depth and location restrictions of the outlets, relocation of the bulk of the utilities was not possible. Almost half of the drilled shafts were affected, leaving redesign as the most feasible remedial solution. The redesign involved adjustments to the shaft length, diameter, and bell. It took place on a case-by-case basis, sometimes only minutes before installation began. Coordination between the field and design team was excellent, and delay associated with the redesign efforts was minimal. In addition, the detailed, high-quality field records kept by both the contractor and field engineers allowed for accurate and fair estimations of the added drilled footage and concrete volumes placed. The additional service fee, which was minimal, was settled quick and fair.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. Reference is made to the operating experience of contractors at a number of sites and feedback from the resource companies as managers of the projects.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2013. "A comparison of data from INPUT, GEOTEM, and MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (AEM) systems over the Aldermac deposit, Québec, Canada, was undertaken to evaluate the relative ef¬ficiency of these systems for the detection of small, deep conductors. The Aldermac orebody was mined between 1933 and 1934 to a depth of 200 m. A deeper mineralized zone was discovered in 1987. The MEGATEMII system was used to acquire 90- and 30-Hz data over the deposit in 2003 as part of a research project. These MEGATEMII data were compared with data acquired by other AEM systems (GEOTEM and INPUT), and the results show that the MEGATEMII response is ten times larger than the other sys¬tems. For the dB/dt response, 30 Hz gives a better signal-to-noise ratio, whereas 90 Hz has a better signal-to-noise ratio on the B-field.The data were evaluated by numerical modeling. The deposit was best represented by a complex mod¬el, comprising two weakly conductive bodies to approximate the alteration halo, two deeper prisms repre¬senting known orebodies, and three bodies ranging in thickness from 3 to 6 m and in resistivity from 12 to 20 ohm·m, representing the chargeable overburden. This implies that the MEGATEMII system is able to see a small conductive body at more than 200 m depth in an area where the response is contaminated by conductive overburden."

Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI) is one of the commonly used tests to evaluate rock abrasiveness for cutter life/cost estimations of TBM projects. There are at least 3 style machines, 2 different pin hardness, and the test could be run on fresh rock surface VS a sawn surface. Each of these parameters has a meaningful effect on the results, but its impacts were not fully understood nor its implications well explored. This paper reviews the current practice of Cerchar testing and its implications on geotechnical investigations related to TBM tunnels and provide a set of guidelines on testing and reporting of the test results for future projects.

The 73rd Street Tunnel Project is part of “The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan” (TARP)also known as the Deep Tunnel Project, and is located in the Village of Bedford Park, County of McCook, State of Illinois. The project consists of a ø 4.42 meter × 2,060 meter long (14´-6? bore, 6,760 foot)tunnel. The completed tunnel is used as a bypass tunnel for the McCook Cup Reservoir Project. The project was awarded to Affholder Inc. of St. Louis, in 2000. The paper describes the project in which a new, high-powered open gripper type main beam machine was used in which high advance rates have been achieved using conventional muck haulage techniques. Features of the project include the installation of rock support consisting of counter-sunk rock bolts that are required to be pull-tested for strength per project specifications. Installation and testing of the bolts are done during the boring cycle. Muck haulage was done by conventional muck car train and hoisting at the construction shaft. As the site layout did not include a tail tunnel, the trains needed to be shuttled at the shaft bottom. Even with the bolting requirements and the muck haulage without a tail tunnel, the Affholder site personnel still achieved high advance rates on the 73rd Street Project.

The systems Ti-Crand Ti-Vhave been reinvesti-gated in the region up to 40 wt pct alloying addition using both conventional and rapid quenching techniques. The Ti-Cr eutectoid temperature was determined to be at 667° & 10° C and 14.5 wt pct Cr. The solubility of the Cr in a Ti was found to be less than 1 pctat 700"C. The P transus of the Ti-V system was found to be depressed to 510°C at 40 wt pct V and the solubility of V in a Ti was found to be less than 2 wt pct at 700°C. Investigation by a. d. McQuillan1-3and m. k. McQuillan4 on the systems Ti-Co, Ti-Cr, Ti-Cu, Ti-Fe, Ti-Mn, Ti-Ni, and Ti-V has cast doubt as to the position of the ß/a + ß boundaries in many of these systems. Their investigations were carried out using hydrogen pressure and/or rapid quenching experiments, as opposed to the conventional quartz capsule techniques employed by most other investigator.'" By these methods, the ß/a + ß boundary was found to be lower than that obtained by conventional techniques in all except the Ti-Fe system. In the latter, the ß/a + ß boundary was essentially the same as the boundary obtained by conventional technique.7' On the basis of rapid quenching results in the Ti-Cr system, M. K. McQuillan4 placed the eutectoid temperature below 550°C whereas other investigations using conventional techniques had placed the eutectoid variously as between 650' and 700°C,5 between 675' and 700°C,6 between 650" and 675°C,7 at 670°C,8 and above 625"C.la9l3 In order to check these results, a reinvestigation of four of the systems was undertaken using both conventional and rapid-quenching techniques. The Ti-Fe and Ti-Mn systems will be dealt with in anoth er paper, with only the Ti-Cr and Ti-V systems being discussed here. Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

The occurrence qf the V phase structure /Zr,Co,Ge, type) in ternary syste7ns (titanium, zivconium, niobium, lanta1urn) -(nickel, cobalt, iron)-(silicon, germanium) was incestigated. Nine V silicides and four V gertrlanides were found and their lattice constants are reporled. The lattice constants of twenty-one preri-ously identified E phases (TiNiSi type) are given. The average atomic volumes of these phases are discussed in relation to similar binary phases. ThE occurrence of a phase Ti4Ni4Si7 was first reported by Westbrook. DiCerbo, and peat' who gave it the name "V phase". They also reported the existence of an E phase TiNiSi. Subsequently a systematic study was undertaken in this laboratory to explore the occurrence of E' and V phases3 in related ternary systems. In the meantime the crystal structure of the E phase TiNiSi 4 and of the V phase Zr4CO4Ge 75,6 was determined. In the present paper the details of the V phase investigation and the lattice constants of the E and V phases are presented. V PHASES Alloy specimens of approximately 10 to 15 g were prepared by arc melting under argon (99.996 pct Ar) atmosphere. The starting materials were all of purity higher than 99.9 pct, with the exception of cobalt. which contained 0.14 pct Fe as the only major impurity. The weight losses were in all cases less than 2 pct, in most cases less than 1 pct. The samples were encapsulated in fused silica tubes with sufficient argon to yield about 1 atm pressure at the annealing temperature. After the homogenization anneal. Table I. the specimens were water-quenched. A representative portion of each specimen was then examined metallographically (etchant: 20 pct HNO,. 10 pct HF. 25 pct glycerine, 45 pct H20). Only minor amounts of second- and third-phase particles were observed in the specimens listed in Table I, with the exception of alloys Zr4Fe4Si7 and Ta,Fe,Si,. which contained an estimated 10 pct by volume of foreign phases. X-ray powder photographs were taken with a Seeman-Bohlin type focusing camera and Fe-KO radiation. Of the thirty possible combinations of elements in the ternary systems (titanium, zirconium. vanadium. niobium. tantalum)-(iron. cobalt, nickel)-(silicon. germanium) thirteen V phases could be identified. In the remaining seventeen ternary systems and also in the systems Cr-Ni-Si and (M0.W)-(Ni.Co)-Si no V phase was found at the composition 4:4:7 after annealing at temperatures between 900" and 1200'C. For the determination of the lattice constants of the V phases Debye-Scherrer photographs were taken using the asymmetric film arrangement and CrKcr radiation (ka1, = 2.28962A). Using the positional parameters, as determined6 for Zr,Co,Ge,. Table 11. intensity calculations were carried out for each of the V phases with the aid of a computer program.: Thus unequivocal indexing of the diffraction patterns was greatly facilitated. The lattice constants. Table I. were then computed by a least-squares fit of the high-angle lines with f (0) = cos2 Q as extrapolation function.
