In this paper, problems that have been experienced with the rockpass system at Kloof Mine No. 3 Shaft are described. Actions that have been taken to overcome the problems are also described. These include the use of slugshots to remove hang-ups, the abandonment and waste filling of passes, and design criteria adopted for an alternative pass system.

This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.

Pneumatic compressed air and hydraulic compressed oil systems represent the primary technologies which are available to the drilling practitioner. While both employ the same operating principals, the characteristics of performance, cost, and reliability can be markedly different between technologies and manufacturers.

The high final total moisture content of fine coal after mining and processing is one of the major reasons that this resource is not extensively used in subsequent power generation, combustion, or other conversion processes. Some coal products, like export coal, may be subjected to a variety of environmental conditions during transport and storage, such as temperature and humidity. To understand the mechanisms by which moisture is attracted and held on and within fine coal particles, further information is needed regarding the processes occurring at the coal surface. In order to determine the correlation between physical coal properties and its moisture adsorption and desorption characteristics, a series of sorption experiments were conducted on various coal samples under climatically controlled conditions. Equilibrium moisture data was collected while changing the temperature and humidity. This data was correlated to coal properties such as particle size, porosity, maceral composition, and mineral content. All the coals that were studied were medium-rank bituminous coals. It was found that the best predictors for moisture adsorption and desorption were the mineral and inertinite contents. Keywords moisture, adsorption, desorption, fine coal, surface properties.

Identifying, quantifying and minimizing technical risks associated to investment decisions is a key challenge for the minerals industry decision takers and investors. However, risk analysis in most bankable mine feasibility studies are based on stochastic modelling of project NPV which, in most cases, fail to provide decision makers with a truly comprehensive analysis of risks associated to technical and management uncertainty and, as the result, are of little use for risk management and project optimization. This paper presents a value-chain risk management approach where project risk is evaluated for each step of the project lifecycle, from exploration to mine closure, and risk management is performed as part of a stepwise value added optimization process.

Drilling and blasting are an essential part of most mining operations, and are commonly major operating cost centres. The effectiveness of blasting can have a significant influence on all subsequent activities, and hence overall operating costs. Drilling and blasting systems must be compatible with the overall mining method, to minimise total costs and ensure operational efficiency. Selection of suitable equipment and techniques requires an understanding of the total operation, plus current skills in specialised technologies. This paper examines the contribution of drilling and blasting to total costs, including the balance between capital and operating costs. The use of computer modelling is discussed, to demonstrate how blast performance and costs can be predicted and alternatives analysed. Case studies illustrate how cost savings can be made in operating mines, and alternative systems evaluated to optimise new projects.

"Upon successful commissioning of the Stage Grinding Project (Cormier et. al., 2002), process improvements predicted through pilot plant testing were obtained in several flotation circuits, resulting in higher grades and recoveries for zinc and lead concentrates. Subsequent to establishing new baseline operating conditions from the Stage Grind Project implementation, additional opportunities were identified, and through the application of Six Sigma methodologies further gains were made. Six Sigma improvement projects were carried out in the copper-lead, zinc, lead upgrading and bulk flotation circuits. The overall performance increase resulting from incremental improvement projects has been substantial.Most remarkably, given the operational maturity up to the late 1980’s, the Brunswick concentrator team has continued to deliver a steady stream of major improvements over the past fifteen years. While senior managers and their programs have changed several times, there have been some critical constants over the long run. Common elements have been a commitment to team work, a commitment to recruit and maintain technical personnel, a structured business improvement framework supported organizationally by senior management, and focus on a few priority initiatives rather than trying to fix everything at once.The paper briefly discusses the longer term setting and then endeavors to illustrate, with examples, how improvements are presently achieved by applying the Six Sigma quality program.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s larger lead/zinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore from the No. 6 mine. In excess of 100 million tonnes have been milled to date. The concentrator employs differential flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper, and lead/zinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

Transportation accounts for some 26% of all mine accidents in South Africa. Although this figure may not be as prolific as fall of grounds accidents or accidents caused by seismic events, the enormity of transportation accidents demands attention, especially as many of these accidents are avoidable. This paper investigates vertical (i.e. shaft), horizontal (i.e. haulages), and in-stope transportation systems and their function as it applies to safety. Recent transportation accidents are discussed looking at current trends within the three transportation areas. In the shaft area, discussions will focus on handling of material cars, loading and off-loading of the workforce and management of shaft orepass systems. The horizontal component will focus on personnel transportation, safety around trains and hoppers, and handling of material in the cross-cut. The discussion on in-stope transportation will focus on the general congestion of the stope environment and how it affects the overall movement of personnel, material, and rock. Of concern are the large numbers of material handling and scraper winch accidents that occur and which will be discussed in some detail. The paper will conclude with a section on proposed guidelines within the three above-mentioned systems for mine engineers to consider in mine design and life of mine planning and scheduling. As an important mechanism for increasing production of the suction-draft-sinter process, it has been shown that gas permeability through the sinter layer plays an important role. Methods to increase production rates have been indicated and suggestions for carrying out the process have been made to improve the rate of production, reduce the fuel consumption, and at the same time obtain a uniform sinter. Laboratory experiments were conducted at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy of the Technical University at Aachen to illustrate these methods. Methods of Increasing Gas Penetration Through Sinter Layers The following are of fundamental importance in determining the process cycle during the sintering of iron ores: 1) Generation of maximum temperature, since its form and range determine sinter quality. 2) Propagation velocity of the temperature maximum which controls the attainable output. 3) The convective heat transfer which influences the velocity of travel of the temperature maximum.

The combined 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 68th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 17 and 18, 2007, in Duluth, MN. About 350 mining industry professionals attended the conference, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from the United States, Canada, Australia, Finland and Brazil. This year’s theme was “Consolidation – Growth – Technology.” The 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured two distinguished speakers and a general managers session in which taconite mine operators provided updates on their operations. The Minnesota Section meeting also offered an SME short course titled “Control the Feed, Control the Mill.” More than 50 individuals at-tended the short course.

This paper describes certain analytical methods used at the Rosepery Mine and Treatment Plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., which are not generally in use and may therefore be of more interest than a description of the normal routine methods which are used in most of the mining assay laboratories of the Commonwealth, and which have been published previously.The ore mined and treated at Rosebery is of a complex nature and demands closer control in the concentrating plant than is necessary on some other similar mining fields.It is necessary for the mill shift supervisors to keep constant control on the grade of lead and zinc concentrates produced on their respective shifts, and further, it is essential to maintain an economic compromise between grade of concentrates and the recovery of the particular concent:t:ate. This necessitates a more frequent check on concentrate grade tp.an is provided by the daily assays carried, out by the assay office. Rather than employ trained ,assayers on shift work, "quick methods" of analysis, which could be carried out by the operators, 'were adopted.'In such methods, it is desirable that the necessary manipulation should be reduced to the following:-a. Taking the sample, drying and mixing.b. Weighing the necessary amount of sample-for assay.c. Adding the reagents for use in the assay without change of beakers.d. The utilization of diaphragm wall construction in Hong Kong began in 1974 with the construction of the New World Center, the first diaphragm wall job built in the British Colony. That landmark job of which I am presenting a few slides and a schematic description, embodied all of the difficulties and problems which are encountered in the difficult geology of Hong Kong. A small rocky island in the South China Sea, Hong Kong provides one of the finest natural harbors in the world. It is its splendid harbor, coupled with the enterprising attitude of the Hong Kong Chinese and the laissez-fair attitude of the British government which has resulted in the explosive growth of this speck of land soon to revert to the political control of mainland China.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER ACT) established a Technical Study Panel (The Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 36- to 42-in wide conveyor belt. Due to today?s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 72-in and wider conveyor belts. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

A model has been developed for drum scrubbing which allows selection of geometry and power input. Specific aspects considered are: Calculation of total static and operating volumes. Total residence time based on total operating volume. Solids residence time based on solids operating volume. Selection of the aspect ratio. Alteration of operating fill to allow for smaller or larger feed openings. Selection of proportion of critical speed. Calculation of shell and motor power requirements. The model uses either solids or total residence time to calculate the required operating volume. The solids residence time is based on the proportion of coarse solids in the feed. Material finer than the reject size is considered as part of the slurry. The solids operating volume is the static volume plus the surcharge on the discharge weir required for flow of the solids from the unit. The total operating volume is the static volume plus the surcharge on the discharge weir for the total flow to exit the scrubber. The burden density is calculated from the coarse solids bulk density and the slurry density that includes all the fine solids. Power is calculated using the Liddell and Moys correlations for burden position and shape, and the operating rotational speed. Results from the model (especially power) have been verified from industrial installations of significant size. Predicted and observed power draws are within two per cent. A check against the JKMRC mill model shows power draw prediction agreement to within four per cent.

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2 wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5 wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. A study was carried out to evaluate various batch flotation models for the recovery of minerals in a UG2 platinum ore. The major minerals in a UG2ore can be grouped as platinum group minerals, chromite, and siliceous gangue. This study also examined the entrainment of minerals during flotation. The models were ranked using statistical methods and an analysis of model-fit residuals. Entrainment parameters obtained from model fitting were evaluated for logic using a simple mineral-to-water ratio versus time plot. The foremost conclusion from the study was the importance of entrainment modelling. The measurement of water recovery increased the size of the data-set, and the inclusion of a simple entrainment model was statistically significant. The overall fit to the data was improved, and the entrainment model provided logical information on the recovery of gangue minerals that were not considered to be floatable.

Green rust (GR) are layered Fe(II)-Fe(III) double hydroxides, having a pyroaurite-type structure consisting of positively charged hydroxide layers and hydrated ions in interlayers. This special feature of GR is very efficient for wastewater treatment as the pollutants are easily taken in or exchanged with the anions in the interlayers. It can be simply and cost-effectively produced by electrocoagulation (EC). Chicken processing plant (CPP) produces large amount of wastewater containing variety of readily biodegradable organic compounds, fats, and proteins. The possible re-use of properly treated CPP wastewater would be economic and environment friendly. In this study, we present our work on treatment of CPP wastewater using EC, specifically for the removal of COD. Analysis of the EC-treated water for reuse in the same plant is discussed considering the U.S.EPA regulations. Two types of EC-reactors were used for this purpose. To better understand the treatment mechanism, EC-floc was also characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS.

"INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

"Techniques were developed to determine the oxygen demand of sulphide ore pulps in the laboratory and in concentrators. The effect of variables which influence oxygen demand was studied, and it is shown that the oxygen demand is a measure of the degree of oxidation of the sulphide surfaces. It is suggested that in investigating the significance of oxygen in flotation, the oxygen demand of the pulp is a more suitable parameter than the dissolved oxygen content.Oxygen demand measurements are being carried out with a view to determining the effect of aeration on mill metallurgy and devising improved methods of predicting aeration requirements of sulphide ores.The importance of pulp oxidation in the flotation of massive sulphide ores has long been recognized. At the Noranda concentrator, chalcopyrite could not be floated satisfactorily without a pre-flotation aeration step because the necessary dissolved oxygen was consumed by the large amount of pyrrhotite in the ore. With aeration, pyrrhotite and pyrite were depressed by surface •oxidization, and the resulting thiosulphate level in solution gave a good indication of the end of useful aeration. 1'he present study was prompted by the need to find an alternative criterion for cases where recycled mill water may contain a relatively high concentration of thiosulphate. Preliminary experiments suggested that the rate of oxygen uptake by the pulp -its oxygen demand -might be a practical measure of the end point of aeration as well as a significant parameter in the flotation of massive sulphide ores.Although it has long been realized that oxygen is an important variable in flotation, analytical difficulties precluded detailed plant investigations. Measurements of' dissolved oxygen in mill pulps were first reported by Ralston(i) in 1929. A titration method was used, and because of the delay occasioned by the preparation of clear solution samples, the values obtained were believed to be low. It was quite evident, however, that pulps in the grinding circuit had a lower oxygen content than in flotation. More recently, Woodcock(2,3) used a polarographic probe to carry out oxygen surveys in six Australian concentrators and he generally observed a similar pattern. A large number of other solution parameters were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, reducing power, and reagent and metal concentrations, with the aim of detecting correlations among the measured variables.
