IN isothermal recrystallization processes, new crystals generally grow into the matrix until they impinge upon other new crystals or an external surface, at constant linear rates G. Before impingement the perceptible course of growth can be described by the equation: 1 = G(t-7) C1I where, G = dl/dt, 1 is a crystal dimension measured in a constant direction, t is the time, and 7, the nucleation period, is a positive intercept on the time axis. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of I as a function of time for a recrystallizing grain. G is dependent upon temperature, driving energy (strain or surface energy), relative grain and boundary orientations, but is generally independent of time. The frequency of nucleation, fi, (time" volume") can be defined by the equation: N = 1/fV [2] where ? is the mean nucleation period and V is the volume of the specimen that has not recrystallized. The kinetics of primary and secondary recrystallization generally can be described satisfactorily in terms of the parameters N and G only.'-" After recrystallization is complete the average grain size 7 increases with time by "normal grain growth;" didt, the average rate of grain growth, is strongly time dependent and has not yet been precisely related to G for the motion of the individual grain boundaries constituting the system. It has been suggested4* " that the elementary act in grain boundary migration is closely related to the elementary act in grain boundary self-diffusion. Although the distance of atom movement in the two processes may be somewhat different, there is reason to expect that the activated states may be very similar, so that the free energy of activation for grain boundary migration should be of the same order of magnitude as for grain boundary self-diffusion. Therefore, it is desirable to develop a satisfactory basis for comparing data on self-diffusion and grain boundary migration and to make such comparisons where possible. Theory The formal theory of grain boundary migration rates is analogous to the theory for the rate of growth of crystals into supercooled liquids reviewed elsewhere 6-8. Boreliuss has shown that the latter theory describes, within the theoretical uncertainty, the growth of selenium crystals into supercooled liquid selenium. Motto and more recently Smolu-chowski" have derived expressions for the rate of boundary migration in recrystallization. The treatment to be presented is similar to Mott's excepting that the formalism of the absolute reaction rate theory will be used. The atomic mobility, M, in grain boundary migration is defined by: G = -M6p/6x where p is the chemical potential per atom and x is the coordinate measured in the direction of grain boundary movement. Let AF be the free energy difference per gram atom on the two sides of the boundary and k the thickness of the boundary. For RT>>AF the potential gradient across the boundary (6p/6x) is essentially linear and it follows that: SF/8x = - aF/N\ [4] where N is Avogadro's number. According to the Nernst-Einstein equation, M is related to a diffusion coefficient, Do, for matter transport in grain boundary migration by the equation: M = Da/kT [5] Substituting eqs 4 and 5 into eq 3 gives the basic relation between Do and G: G = DoaF/\RT [6] Do values may be calculated from experimental values of G from eq 6 and directly compared with the coefficient of self-diffusion within the crystal, DL, or the grain boundary self-diffusion coefficient D,. However, a more convenient, though equivalent, basis for comparing atomic mobility in grain boundary migration and self-diffusion is through the constants of the absolute reaction rate theory. According to this theory diffusion coefficients may be written:" D = k2(kT/h) exp [-AF,/RT] 171 aFa, the free energy of activation, is related to the measured energy of activation, Q, by the equation: AFA = Q - T aSx - RT [8] where aSa is the entropy of activation. Substituting eqs 8 and 7 into eq 6 gives: G = ek(kT/h) (aF/RT) exp [(AS,,)C/R] exp C-Qc/RTI C91 where the subscript G refers to boundary migration. The relationship between the driving free energy and the free energy of activation in boundary migration is indicated schematically in Fig. 2. Experience indicates that the variation of G with temperature can be described by: G= Go exp [- Qc/RT] [10] where Go and Qc are generally temperature independent over wide ranges of temperature. Single crystals of each metal were deformed at 77°K and heated at constant rates, variously in the range 0.125" to 4o°Kper min from 77" to -390oK, while being monitored in an X-ray diffractometer. Changes in diffraction-peak heights and line breadths were used to ascertain the temperature ranges of recrystalliza-tion. The results were subjected to the analysis of nicholas' in order to obtain the rate-controlling activation energies,Q. In this analysis no recourse to a separate and distinct nucleation stage is required and the results of studying recrystallization proved consistent with the hypothesis of a constant number of nuclei or equivalent hypotheses. The values Pb = 5.5 ± 0.5 keal per mole Zn ~ 7.5 Sn - 5 Bi - 9. 5 correspond for lead, zinc, and tin to activation energies obtained elsewhere for grain boundary migration, and for bismuth and lead to previous studies of re-crystallization by Barrett.6 This correlation allows the conclusions that interference from recovery was minimal and that the observed recrystallization rates in these pure metals are effectively governed by grain boundary migration. Good agreement was not found between the results of this kind of study in zone-refined aluminum and previous work; and supplementary isothermral experiments involving hardness tests and metallography did not resolve the discrepancy. Nevertheless, at least a range,Q = 11.5 ± 2 keal per mole, can be assigned to the activation energy for boundary migration in aluminum. An experimental study of one aspect of the recrystallization process is presented here for four metals of different crystal structure. The metals chosen for study were all zone-refined to reduce impurity effects, but the attendant high purity presented a difficulty. For any reasonably high driving force a "re-crystallization temperature", TR, is in the range of 0.25 T,, where T, is the absolute melting point, and study was therefore restricted to lower temperatures. An X-ray technique under constant heating-rate conditions adequate above 90°K was devised for the study; in consequence, a newer type of analysis following Nicholas1 had to be used to obtain quantitative information about activation energies. The standard methods of studying recrystallization have involved the comparable analyses of Johnson and Mehl2 and Avrami3 which are reviewed by Burke and Turnbull.* The general analysis4 which is applied only to isothermal studies using any of various investigative techniques states:

State and Federal construction specifications require the Blasting Contractor to prepare a Master Blasting Plan which is reviewed by the Owner’s Representative. The Master Blasting Plan requires the Contractor to submit the design of a typical blast. Most blasting specifications also require the Blasting Contractor to submit Daily Blasting Plans. The Master Blasting Plan and the Daily Blasting Plan require that the Blasting Contractor also submit the types and quantities of explosives and initiators used. The specifications also request that the Blasting Contractor submit the pounds of explosive used per delay for both production and presplit blasts. The Blasting Contractor may also be required to predict the anticipated ground vibration and air overpressure levels for the proposed blasts. There are equations that can be used to predict the ground vibration. There are also equations that can be used to predict the air overpressure levels. The data for these equations were primarily derived from quarry and surface coal mine and some construction blasts. Data from major construction projects were analyzed in this study to determine new air overpressure propagation equations for construction blasting. These new prediction equations compare calculated results analyzed from field data with other existing air overpressure prediction equations. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc oxide using urea and choline chloride mixture in a molar ratio 2:1 is investigated in different experimental variables, namely, the concentration of added [BMIM]HSO4, temperature, and applied cell voltage. The additive, [BMIM]HSO4, was determined to have beneficial effect on the current efficiency, energy consumed in the process and surface morphology of the deposits. The highest current efficiency (92.6%) and lowest energy consumption (2.92kWh/kg) was obtained for solution with 20mg/mL [BMIM]HSO4. The morphology showed the formation of absorbed additive layer on the cathode at higher concentration of additives. Experiments were conducted at different temperatures between 343K and 388K and at various applied cell voltages between 2.7V to 3.6V to determine the best experimental conditions. By varying temperature, highest current efficiency (91.3%) and lowest energy consumption (2.69 kWh/kg) was obtained at 373K. The electrodeposition process is enhanced between the applied voltage 3.0-3.3V by achieving lower energy consumption (2.75~3.06kWh/kg) and higher current efficiency (88.4~89.7%). SEM images showed grain size is significantly increased in higher applied voltages. While at higher temperatures, it seemed to generate particle growth as clusters at the outer deposit layer.

Finalmente, la información recolectada se sustenta y validad por las experiencias llevadas a cabo en las 36 comunidades del entorno de las operaciones de SPCC, convirtiéndose en un aporte para el tratamiento comunitario.

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i. Blasting in the heart of the historic Byward Market District of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, presents a unique set of challenges. The obvious difficulties arising on projects requiring blasting within 3 m (10 ft) of 125 year old buildings in various states of disrepair have been encountered and successfully dealt with countless times before. The complexities increase exponentially when tenuous property boundaries, unknown structural details, litigious histories and the need for encroachment agreements lead to individuals with competing interests all able to impact the same operation. Blasting on three projects in the Market was started in early 2005 after months of negotiation. Ultimately, the potential for the projects to proceed hinged on the ability to successfully disseminate blast data to the various stakeholders. As part of the agreements drawn up, property owners demanded immediate notification of the measured vibration levels with contract provisions including clauses such that any exceedance of the USBM criteria immediately triggered project shut down and complete blasting program redesign, and approval by all parties. With stakeholders located in various cities and, in some instances, on various continents, a conventional attended monitoring strategy would not satisfy the requirements. In response to the critical reporting need, Explotech Engineering Ltd. installed unattended monitoring stations around the sites, all incorporating wireless telemetry. After each blast, data was automatically transferred from the monitoring stations to a web-linked server via the wireless network, where it was immediately available to project stakeholders through a password protected website. The solution required a unique blend of data acquisition, telemetry, database, and security technologies, all married to produce a reliable system that was easy to maintain and use. While these types of systems were originally developed for use as permanent monitoring networks in operating mines and quarries, monitoring professionals are increasingly benefiting from the technology on temporary building projects that have typically been the realm of attended monitoring strategies. Globally, this has emerged as a solution to provide more timely access to data for stakeholders, and to minimize the legal exposure from multiple violations of vibration limits. As this trend is likely to continue, the regulated vibration control industry is likely to see a continued shift in technology development to leverage wireless networks and the Internet to continue to improve data transfer, archiving and distribution.

Since early July, domestic producer listings in primary aluminum ingot have been at 53¢ per pound. Dealers, however, lowered their August quotes by 1.8¢-2¢ to 47.5¢-48¢ per pound. BITUMINOUS COAL AND LIGNITE -The wildcat strike of UMWA coal miners which began on June 23 in protest of cutbacks in medical benefits appears to have ended. According to the West Virginia Coal Association on September 7, 1977, all mines in West Virginia were back in operation on September 6 and again on September 7. The Kentucky Coal Association reported approximately 2,500 miners were on strike in eastern Kentucky on September 6, but there was full employment on September 7.

Stream sediment geochemical analyses were collated from open-file mining company reports and assembled in the REGCHEM computerised database at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited. The database operates on an IBM-compatible PC microcomputer using an application programmed in dBASE IV and termed GEOEXPL. By August 1992, data for 6383 stream sediment samples from 6335 different sites in the Coromandel Peninsula region (Hauraki Goldfield) were entered, giving a total of 29 292 separate elemental analyses. Preliminary statistical analysis using PROBPLOT on a set of data collected by AMOCO from the Mahakirau-Whangapoua area shows that these data are a complex mix of subpopulations related to mineralisation and different source rock types. Thresholds of 37 ppm copper, 31 ppm lead, 112 ppm zinc, and 2.3 ppm molybdenum, defmed by arithmetic models for the combined data set, separate the individual element sets into 'first order anomalous/lesser anomalous and background' subpopulations as follows: copper five per cent/95 per cent, lead five per cent/95 per cent, zinc one per cent/99 per cent, and molybdenum 15 per cent/85 per cent.

Fine coal (-500 µm) is notoriously difficult to dewater. It is not uncommon for a dewatered product to have a moisture content as high as 30 per cent after vacuum filtration. This poses several handling and financial problems to such an extent that a lot of fine coal is discarded onto slurry waste ponds. A novel way of dewatering fine coal was developed at North-West University. It entails deliberately damaging the filter cake during dewatering to allow for an increased flow of air through the cake at the expense of the applied pressure differential. This method resulted in an average improvement in final cake moisture of between 3 per cent and 5 percent when executed in the laboratory under controlled conditions. A device was designed that could be fitted onto existing belt filters that would damage the filter cake as it passes by. This device was tested on a vacuum belt filter installation at a coal beneficiation operation in the Waterberg coal field in South Africa. The results showed a 3 per cent reduction in final moisture of the cake, proving the validity of the method at full industrial scale.

The fact is that part of provided energy to aluminum production smelters will be lost as waste heat and it never used for aluminum production. One part of waste heat is escaping from the potroom exhaust gases, which was studied for possible recovery in a desalination plant to produce distilled water and the paper was presented in 2011 TMS Annual Meeting. However, it was shown that waste heat recovery plant to produce distilled water is highly profitable but the main fact is that the exhaust gases from potroom are highly corrosive, abrasive and dusty. The main challenge for desalination plant construction, which is using aluminum smelter exhaust gases as the main heat source, is the highly corrosive environment that makes the situation difficult and complicated for equipments design and plant construction. In this paper, we are trying to study a detailed investigation regarding the heat exchangers fouling, corrosion in heat exchangers including heat exchangers' material, how often we need to shut down the plant for maintenance or cleaning, and plant thermal efficiency with considering fouling."

RECENTLY there has been considerable interest in the production and use of extra hard alloys composed primarily of tungsten and carbon. Dr. Hoyt's recent paper1 gives a good description of these alloys and describes their performance when used as tools. There are a number of these alloys on the market sold under various trade names, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of an investigation of the structure of five of these alloys by means of microscopic and X-ray methods. The samples studied were in the form of small tools or wire-drawing dies, which were either purchased or supplied as samples. They were in some cases not supplied by the original makers but were furnished by the agents in this country, and we wish to call attention to the fact that they may not be truly representative of the materials supplied under the various trade names. No performance data are given and no inference as to the inferiority of one alloy as against any other is made. K. Schröter2 recently described methods for polishing alloys of this type for microscopic examination and has presented photomicrographs of several alloys. However, he did not identify their constituents or describe methods for their identification.
