CESIUM-137 ISOTOPE began to displace cobalt-60 III the treatment of cancer during 1956. Production and Consumption.-Consumption of cesium and rubidium was approximately the same as in 1955. Production, however, decreased, as several companies shipped from stocks produced in previous years. South Africa was the source of most cesium and rubidium minerals used in the United States in 1956. Cesium and rubidium metals and compounds were produced from ore by: DeRewal International Rare Metals Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; Fairmont Chemical Co., Inc., Newark, N. J.; Foote Mineral Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo. Most sales were to domestic consumers, but small quantities were exported to Australia, England, Germany, and Sweden. New production facilities were under construction in. 1956 by San Antonio Chemicals to produce mixed potassium, rubidium, and cesium carbonates. A plant capable of separating and packaging 200,000 curies of cesium-137 annually was under construction at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.6

Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health re­searchers conducted a study to investigate the human response issues related to wearing a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). The goal was to develop training to educate miners on what they could expect from their units during an escape. Subjects included miners who had experience wearing SCSRs, manu­facturers, and researchers. Results identified nine key areas of concern: (1) starting the unit, (2) unit heat, (3) induction of coughing, (4) unit taste, (5) difficulty in breathing while wearing the unit, (6) quality of the air supplied, (7) nose clips, (8) goggles, and (9) the behavior of the breathing bag. In addition, researchers reviewed the literature on human response under duress. This article describes the expectations training program, which comprises the findings of the SCSR study and what is known about the normal human response in an emergency. The authors present background on SCSRs and the SCSR switchover procedure mandated in the recent federal Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, which provided the impetus for the expectations training. This article is a progress report of a program designed to quantitatively evaluate geological parameters to predict stable slope angles. The author feels that, although there does not appear to be any one technique or characteristics that will suffice as an index to the determination of stable slope angles, a combination of seismic methods as outlined here, detailed geological mapping and logging of core, and a better understanding of the angle of internal friction in rock types will permit accurate estimation. A mining engineer friend once remarked, "If we don't have pit slope failures, the slopes are too flat." Since economic justification of an open pit project is based upon ultimate pit slopes, we cannot wait until the pit is developed and slopes established by trial and error. Some combination of geological and/or geophysical techniques must be developed to permit accurate prediction of stable slope angles and to suggest modification of pit outlines to result in slopes enabling maximum economic yield. This presentation is a progress report of a program designed to quantitatively evaluate geological parameters to predict stable slope angles. The principle of the weakest link applies to any slope stability evaluation and necessitates detailed geological examination and recording of observations. Physical failure will occur along any surface where shearing stress exceeds shearing resistance. Rock conditions are seldom uniform even within a single cut or pit face, so stability conditions will vary. Consequently, both plan outline and ultimate slope limits must be tailored to the specific situation. Economic advantages to be gained by slight increases in slope angles in deep pits are well recognized and stimulate efforts to obtain maximum permissible slope angles. MECHANICS OF SLOPE FAILURE Excellent reviews on the nature of slope failure have been presented+2,6,8,11 For the purpose of this study, the writer considers failure to take place by one or more of three processes: 1) ravelling, 2) translation or slope failure, and 3) rotation or base failure (Fig. 1). The effects of increased pore water pressure in soils were recognized in 1923 by Terzaghi in his development of the concept of effective stress, and he has applied the same principle to jointed rocks designating water pressure as cleft-water pressure.8 Cleft-water pressure in a rock slope reduces normal pressure on the plane of failure, thus reducing shearing resistance and resulting in slope failure. In the following discussion it is assumed that adequate drainage is supplied to prevent any build-up of water pressure. This is the first step in any program to establish maximum slopes. Ravelling: Ravelling occurs in rocks with low cohesion and entails the free movement of individual fragments ranging from single rock falls to running ground. Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. Despite near-record commodity prices, the mining industry continues to search for ways to maintain profits in these times of steadily increasing energy prices and steadily decreasing grades. The pressure is still on today’s miners to continuously improve their operations because they know that one day prices too will drop. Some, however, have seized the opportunity to employ systematic methods to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of their workforce and equipment. As a result, closer attention is being paid to scheduling and the value that could be added by defining the extraction sequence that maximizes the net present value [NPV] of a project. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by Newmont Mining Corporation [Newmont] at its operations and the application of sophisticated software tools and methods in its search of solutions to this problem.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Min. Eng.) degree A study was conducted to investigated and compare the feasibility of two single level extraction layouts for an intact part of theorebody of the De Beers diamond mine, Koffiefontein. Two layouts were chosen and the tonnage profile, development schedule and production ring blast layouts were calculated by applying the information acquired through a literature study. Current principles used on the mine were also applied. The first layout chosen is described as a simple straightforward layout with 6 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart, and is referred to as Layout A. The second layout, named Layout B, is described as a complex chevron layout with 9 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart. This layout has a rim tunnel situated in the kimberlite ground, which is called a chevron and this made the layout more complex than Layout A. By comparing the financial results of the two layouts, it was found that Layout B is a more feasible option than Layout A. Sensitivity analyses show that both layouts are extremely sensitive to the revenue of the projects. Therefore it is recommended that Layout B can prove to be a source of additional tonnage to add to the total tonnage profile of the mine and to extend the life of mine by 20 months, only if certain financial/economic factors improve. There is, however, still some areas of the project that need to be investigated.

Advances in technology have led to larger and deeper open pit mines and, consequently, also increased the potential economic impact associated with slope failures. If the ultimate aim of mining operations is to maximise project profit, it is surprising to see related research activities have mostly been focusing on technical areas such as slope stability modelling, but with limited studies conducted to date to assess the relationship between geotechnical uncertainties and economic risk. Given most major decisions in the mining industry nowadays are made by management staff with financial background, any design approach that would help to link slope stability analysis results with monetary values would no doubt enhance communication between geotechnical practitioners and decision makers. This paper presents a study which assesses economic impact of slope failures to assist in mine planning. The study also estimates the impact of slope failures on project value, which would enable economic risks associated with pit slope designs to be closely examined. The proposed risk assessment techniques, used by financial institutions for many years to assess portfolio risks, can assist geotechnical practitioners in quantifying risks of slope failures. Risk-adjusted concepts are also suggested to assist management in selecting a slope design with optimal risk and return ratio.
