The City of Portland’s Westside CSO Project is constructing a deep tunnel system to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) from entering the Willamette River. Several kilometers of microtunneled pipelines connect the existing system to the new tunnel. The alignments encountered a variety of ground conditions, including fill, manmade obstructions (wood, steel piles, debris), fine-grained to dense coarse-grained materials, cobbles and boulders, all below groundwater. Fine tungsten was used to mimic gold and fine and coarse silica and magnetite to mimic gangue. The optimum flow rate of fluidisation water varied from 1.7 l/min for fine silica to 5.6 l/min for coarse magnetite. Overloading at optimum flow rate was then investigated. With fine silica gangue no overload occurred under any of the conditions studied, and there was very little overload with fine magnetite. Coarse silica caused appreciable overload, but only after a significant bed of tungsten had been formed; with fine magnetite gangue the onset of overloading occurred earlier. Finally, with coarse magnetite severe overloading occurred almost immediately. Overloading was modelled using a first-order kinetic rate constant for erosion of the concentrate bed and a critical mass of constant above which it takes place. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of removing oversize to maximise recovery, particularly with a high-density gangue

The possibility of using 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol dissolved in tetrachloromethane as extractant for boron recovery is discussed. The parameters optimized for this purpose are contact time, boron concentration in the aqueous phase, extractant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase ratio. NaOH is used as stripping agent for boron recovery from the loaded organic phase. Boron extraction is found to be a slow process (equilibrium time 20 minutes) compared to boron stripping, which is reasonably fast (equilibrium time 5 min). Maximum boron extraction is possible at a broad pH range from 1.0 to 6.0. Using 1.0M extractant concentration, a 1:1 phase ratio (organic: aqueous) and two stages, ~99% boron extraction is achieved. More than 97% boron stripping is possible using 0.5M NaOH at a 1:1 (organic: aqueous) phase ratio in two stages. Overall, a 95.6% boron recovery was achieved. Loss of solvent into the aqueous phase and co-extraction of Ca, Na and K into the organic phase at higher equilibrium pH are two major concerns in his process.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. Session 2, Deep Foundation without Soil Excavation, has attracted no fewer than 22 papers dealing with subjects from soil improvement by grouting, injection, and deep mixing techniques through vibroflotation and special piles, including aspects pertaining to conventional driven and bored piles. In the short time available, it is not possible to both do justice to the papers and provide a critical review of the state-of-the-art. Instead, to meet the objective of making the next half hour worthwhile to the audience, I have chosen to comment on a few special points brought forward in the papers and thereafter to discuss more in detail a couple of aspects I have deemed to be of general interest. Four papers deal with jet-grouting, injection, and deep mixing techniques: DOMSKI, J. J. Stope back caving in a mine using open stope mining interrupts the planned mining sequence and causes oversize muck and dilution with adverse economic implications. As many underground mines are mining or have plans to mine at depth, stope back caving could have significant impact on the mine sustainability. Therefore understanding the caving mechanism is important in preventing future occurrence and improving the mine economic performance. Falconbridge Ltd Kidd Mine is an underground mine using open stope method producing more than 2 million tonnes per year. Its current lowest mining level is approximately 2070m below surface and the lower portion of the orebody is being developed. In years of 2002 and 2003 the back of three stopes of approximately 1900m and 2040m below surface caved and caused substantial mining difficulties at the mine. As these caved stopes are subject to stress concentration, seismic activities and near major geological structures, the caving mechanism is much more complex than that of stopes near surface. In addition to the recorded caving history by site observations, the mine carried out cavity surveys and test drilling to define the caved profiles. The mine seismic monitoring database provided information at these stopes. Stress modeling work conducted by an external consultant provided the stress patterns at the caved stopes. Based on the field collected data and stress and seismic information, this paper presents details of the stope caving process and cavity surveyed profiles, reviews the predictability of the stability graph approach for these cases, discusses the caving mechanism and proposes preventive measures to stabilize the stope back.

The City of Atlanta Water Department required the construction of a two sludge tanks and a wet well at the existing Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant. Western Summit won a design build contract to build the project and proceeded to evaluate the wet well size options, and construction procedures. The final design required the construction of a 1 million gallon tank. The proximity of the underground tank to adjacent roads and existing plant structures ruled out laying back the excavation. As a result a tied back sheet pile retaining wall was initially proposed.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. Industrial process water for the Commodore Coal Mine and the adjoining Millmerran Power Station is provided by pumping secondary treated sewage effluent 100 km from the Wetalla Sewage Treatment Plant near Toowoomba. (A separate source is used for potable water.) The effluent is not of sufficient quality for discharge to a watercourse, but it is suitable, with further treatment, for the mine and power station. In designing and constructing the pipeline, special emphasis was placed on preventing accidental spills or planned releases to the environment. The pipeline and associated works can transfer 1000 ML/annum for reuse in the coal mine and power station.

"Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations using very large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Low-aspectratio single-stage SAG mills were introduced in South Africa to process the consistent gold bearing Witwatersrand quartzites. Elsewhere, circuits were patterned after the more conventional North American circuits with high-aspect-ratio SAG mills followed by ball mills. This paper provides information on two recent Gold Fields group installations covering both types of SAG mill in large, single-stage applications. While these operations process similar tonnages, the mills represent opposite ends of the aspect-ratio spectrum. The Tarkwa mine in Ghana employs a low-aspect 27’ x 42’ 14MW SAG mill. The St Ives mine in Australia operates a conventional 36’ x 18’ 13.4MW SAG mill.INTRODUCTIONGold Fields is one of the world’s largest gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.2 million ounces. Variations of the temperature and steam/moisture content of the air with distance and time are modelled for a single airway. The input for the simulation is an air temperature that varies with time, together with the moisture/steam content that results, for example, from a fire with a given distribution of heat and of fume concentrations at the beginning of the airway. The transport of heat and moisture to the surface of the wallrock is assumed to be simultaneous. Such multiphase convection may result in evaporation from the moist wall close to the fire and recondensation downstream. The modelling of this non-linear effect is a unique feature of the new simulation. A new analytical solution is used to calculate the conduction of transient heat within the rock mantle, which, in the event of a fire, is typically a short-term process. This allows for an arbitrary variation of surface temperature with time - unlike that permitted by the age function solution, which is limited to stepped temperature changes. An iterative numerical scheme that has recently been developed to simulate mine climate is used to calculate the coupled transient heat conduction and multiphase surface heat transport in successive length increments along the airway. To demonstrate the simulation procedure a numerical example is presented in which a fire with a given distribution of heat and fume concentrations with time is located at the beginning of an airway

The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomorphological element formed since late Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite associated with a series of raised shorelines. The location of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping Archaen granite/ granulite complex and a sea current pattern determined by local geography and a prevailing wind direction. A progression from medium to high titanium ilmenite is evident parallelled by progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variations in trace element content accompany this process. Circulating groundwater has caused vertical mineralogical variations within individual deposits and by precipitation of iron has formed layers of hardpan.The Geographe Bay deposits are of important economic significance.INTRODUCTIONObservations made during the course of a brief survey of the southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain provide an outline of the geology and mineralogy of the mineral sand deposits of the area. This preliminary study will require considerable modification in the light of more detailed work in the future.REGIONAL GEOLOGYThe Geographe Bay area is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia between longitudes 115° O'W. and 116° O'W. and latitudes 33° 15'S. and 33° 45'S.The general geology of the area is shown in Fig. 1 where the control of the physiography exercised by the Cape Leeuwin-Cape Naturaliste basement ridge is readily apparent. The Tren Urbano project in Puerto Rico includes a 19 m diameter tunnel constructed by the stacked drift method, which involves installation of a pre-supported concrete arch using multiple tunnels. Geotechnical conditions consisted of weak rock and highly weathered, unstable alluvial soils. Due to low cover, reinforcement of the arch was required. Ground behavior ranged from firm ground to mixed-face to raveling and flowing ground. Consequently, construction of the individual drifts involved many different soft-ground techniques such as steel set supports, shotcrete support, shield tunneling, forepoling, and consolidation grouting. During construction, the design was modified to improve constructability. Although settlement was experienced during excavation of the drifts, arch movements were within predicted limits and minimal surface settlement was observed upon excavation of the interior.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. This paper presents the use of non-parametric approach (i.e., data envelopment analysis, DEA) for the development of environmental sustainability indicators in mineral processing using environmental, economic and/or integrated indicators (i.e., indicators that interrelate two dimensions of sustainability). A case study based on real publicly available data is presented to illustrate how the proposed approach can be implemented in practice. The merit of this approach, which is based on the productive efficiency framework, is that it provides environmental sustainability indicators that can be used internally for benchmarking purposes and externally for sustainability reporting.

Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. Due to the rapidly increasing production rates and deepening of mine working areas, there is a drastic rise in the number of thermal issues to be addressed for maintaining a safe mine environment. As high temperatures and humidity in underground mines could affect the health and performance of workers, and ultimately the production rate, it is necessary to provide a properly controlled safe environment. The backfilling of stopes in metal, non-metal mines results in different thermophysical properties for the hanging, side and foot walls, modeling of which is not provided by any existing mine climate simulation software. This paper presents the modeling of such a single stope using the MULTIFLUX (MF) software, developed at University of Nevada, Reno. A special case is presented in this paper, where a case study from the Homestake mine in the US with a drift and ramp connected to a stope with high Virgin Rock Temperature (VRT) and various spot heat sources is modeled in MULTIFLUX and CLIMSIM, and the results are compared against each other. Another case is presented in which the stope of the previous cases is modeled with walls, each having a different set of thermophysical properties. These results are compared with the former results to analyze the effect of anisotropic properties.
