In this study, we evaluated the effects of different shapes and distribution densities of mineral grains in coal on failure mechanics using the numerical software 3DEC. The main aim of this study was to identify possible failure mechanisms influenced by mineral habit and frequency in coal. Exploring differences in failure mechanics associated with the mineral grains helped to determine the role of mineral character as a possible contributor to characterize burst-prone coals. To achieve the goal of this study, a series of numerical specimens were prepared in the 3DEC model as follows: first, the 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the DFNs (Discrete Fracture Networks) technique was performed to explicitly generate the discontinuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) in the numerical specimens based on the results of laboratory analyses. Then, the different realizations of mineral grains were embedded in the 3DEC model to simulate an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test to assess the influence of the mineralogical characteristics on the UCS.

Respirable rock dust poses serious long-term health effects to workers in mining and tunneling underground hard rock environments. When inhaled, respirable silica particles commonly found in quartz and other minerals will scar sensitive lung tissue and cause irreversible lung diseases. Characteristics such as concentration, type of mineral, particle size, and particle shape inhaled can harm workers to various extents. Therefore, this study characterizes rock dust particles less than 100µm in aerodynamic diameter that are released from cutting hard rock in the underground mining environment. In this study, laboratory full scale cutting tests on samples of potash rock were performed with radial picks to generate dust. Three stages of pick wear were tested: new, moderately worn, and severely worn. Comparisons between different stages of pick wear to dust concentration, size distribution, and particle shape characteristics are drawn from this study to start determining the scenarios when the released airborne dusts become potentially most hazardous for workers. Although further testing needs to be conducted to make viable conclusions, the moderately worn pick, or the pick with the most blunt tip, in these experiments are potentially the most dangerous. The blunt pick tip released the highest concentration of dust and generated particle shapes with the highest aspect ratio compared to the other two picks. The preliminary results of this study allow for the further development of optimum bit management and maintenance systems to control the exposure of respirable dust to mine workers.

The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.

Kinetic tests results are influenced by methodological variables, including test duration and mine waste particle size. Some samples tested produced neutral drainage in kinetic tests for more than two years prior to drainage acidification. The potential for long "lag times" can be assessed based on the mine waste mineralogy. The lag time duration can be estimated using this mineralogy in conjunction with dissolution rates observed in the kinetic tests. The influence of particle size on the drainage quality is dependent on the variation of the availability of acid-producing and acid-neutralizing minerals with particle size.

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million inhabitants. The project was constructed by a joint venture of four South American contractors (“the JV”), and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment Plant: A 16 hectare area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored Tunnel: Nearly 15 km of 3.6 m inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m below grade, was bored with two EPB tunnel boring machines to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions: Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access & Ventilation Shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of: one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (Intake and Treatment Plant, respectively), and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installed afterwards. Access Shaft 3, the intermediate shaft located between the launch shaft and the treatment plant, experienced persistent leaks during initial excavation attempts."

To recycle steelmaking slags for their iron, manganese, and lime contents, removal of the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate and calcium phosphate is essential. Slow-cooling of slags was necessary to promote the sufficient grain growth to achieve liberation. In-situ grain size distribution determination showed that a high soaking temperature, a long soaking time, a very slow cooling rate, and the addition of fluorspar were shown to promote grain growth. High gradient magnetic separation on slow-cooled slags removed much of the dicalcium silicate. Liberation modelling was used to discuss the breakage and beneficiation characteristics of the slow-cooled slags.

The low-shear viscosity of kaolin slurries is one of the principal characteristics that determines whether the clay can be utilized for paper and ceramic applications. In this work, causes of poor low-shear viscosity and methods of improving rheology have been investigated. The presence of fine-grained smectite impurities within the kaolin was shown to detrimentally affect the low-shear rheology of slurries produced from these clays. It was also shown that mechanically working (i.e., pugging) a crude kaolin followed by desliming to remove these impurities can reduce the low-shear viscosity.

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, ranging in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µm), -100 mesh (150 µm), and -400 mesh (37µm) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the three coals tested, pyrite and ash -forming minerals were usually rejected best at -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µm) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

Under the terms of the 1970 amendments to the Clean Air Act, the EPA established national ambient air quality standards for a number of pollutants. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was one of these pollutants. These ambient air quality standards have had perhaps their biggest impact on the power utilities. In an effort to meet the air quality standards set forth by the EPA, utilities using high sulfur fuels have been forced to install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems. The majority of FGD systems in operation today are nonregenerable systems, that is the by-product of the system is disposed of, usually into settling ponds. Limestone slurry is the most common reagent used to remove SO from the flue gases. The calcium carbonate (limestone) slurry interacts with the flue gas, absorbing the SO2 and forming a by-product of calcium sulfate/sulfite which is disposed of.

A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system that is designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults m mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures m the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchical structure an: formulated by creating "what-if" scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide' reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. Research conducted in South African mines has demonstrated the benefit of ground penetrating radar for the detection of geologic features and hazards. This is crucial for safety and production considerations in underground mines that are as much as 4 kilometers deep. This paper describes a new ground penetrating radar system designed specifically for high quality data acquisition, in the harsh conditions of deep underground environments, for use by operators with minimal geophysical experience. Design criteria included automated functions, intrinsic safety, light weight and minimal power requirements. Data is processed on the ground surface by geoscientists using a PC.

Introduction Troublesome shales have plagued the petroleum industry for more than 50 years. Unstable boreholes have been experienced when drilled into shale formations; sane have been studied almost at the beginning of rotary drilling. A little progress has been made since then, but much is still to be learned. No simple solution exists so far, but good drilling practices combined with good mud practices have been helpful. It is well known that shales in general have a strong affinity for water, and when water is adsorbed, the stability of the shale section of a well is reduced; cohesive strength will be re- bed, properties will be altered and shale will generally expand and/or crumble. The amount of water a shale will adsorb depends on the characteristics of its clay mineral and the ionic concentration of surrounding fluid. Fluid loss and the resulting hydration of an unstable formation can lead to serious downhole problems. The rate of fluid loss depends greatly on the permeability of the deposited cake. In impermeable formations, however, there is no loss of fluid into the formation. As such, shale, because of its very low porosity and almost no permeability, could be termed impermeable. Yet there is strong evidence that shale surfaces are wetted by an invasion of fluid into the formation through microfractures and jointed planes. It is this wetting that causes the shales to swell and slough into the hole, resulting in problems such as increased mud volume and treating costs, bridges and fill-up, stuck pipe, overgauge hole, poor cement jobs and increased cement requirements, and logging and completion difficulties. Drilling operations have been defeated by severe shale problems, resulting in & hole being plugged and abandoned after several weeks of drilling. Shales are we1l known as being difficult and costly to drill. Numerous fishing jobs have plagued drilling operations, and the cost of reaming tight holes ad weighting up the drilling mud to control shale sloughing has been high. The concept of controlling water loss to stop sloughing was introduced in the 1920's. It was known-then that calcium in fresh water re- strains clay £ran excessive swelling (theory of osmosis) . This reinforced the belief that calcium-based muds such as lime, gypsum and calcium chloride should minimize hydration of clays. Lime muds were then introduced for this purpose and others in the 1930-1940 decade1. They were used for shale inhibition but were not effective. In an attempt to improve them, a special calcium-type mud beam popular during the 1950's. Hole enlargement continued and they too were considered ineffective. During & early 1960qs, papers were published claiming that shale swelling could be prevented by using high concentrations of chemical thinner called Chrane Lignosulfonate1. This began the era of highly treated lignosulfote muds. Unfortunately, the hole enlargement problem continued. During & mid-1960’s, oil based muds were used for the purpose of inhibition of shales. Not until 1966 did Mondshine2 suggest that the water phase be saturated with calcium chloride. The cost of using oil based mud was considered by most operators not worth the additional hole stability. The potassium chloride-polymer muds were also used in many fields in the United States and western Canada. The use of these muds has been claimed to prevent clay swelling by inhibition and encapsulation in sane areas of western Canada. They are also expensive and their ueneral application is still experimental. To reduce filtrate loss when sloughing shale becomes a problem during drilling is a reasonable practice. This study will investigate the use of cationic organic additives to mud to form a protective barrier between the shale - which are primarily composed of clays - and water that will keep water from entering the microfractures and will also prevent them from hydrating. In so doing, an understanding of modern clay chemistry and & dispersive properties of cationic additives in water based systems will be our most valuable tools. This study will also present and solve a mathematical model for simulating cation transport phenomena in fractured shales using the Framdlich equilibrium adsorption isotherm. The studies will analyze wellbore failure and stability as affected by cationic organic material.

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is a new, promising technology, and, since its conception, numerous applications have been successfully tested. Nevertheless, research and development efforts have continued to improve the technology with respect to operating conditions and design considerations. Results, from experimental studies on bubble generation in the ASH system are presented in this paper. Bubble size distributions generated during ASH operation were determined using a high-speed photographic technique. The influence of many factors, including surfactant concentration, water flow rate, and porous-tube pore size have been studied. Test results indicate that these process variables have a profound effect on the bubble size distribution. With an increase in surfactant concentration or water flow rate (shear field), the bubble size distributions become narrower and shift toward smaller average bubble diameters. However, the influence of pore size is more complicated. Depending on the experimental conditions, the average bubble size was found to range from about 100 to 300 µm in diameter.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

A new flotation collector, benzyl arsonic acid, was used for the flotation of ilmenite. ESCA, Auger spectroscopy, and chemical analysis were used to investigate the correlation between the variation in surface constituents and the flotation recovery of ilmenite. Experiments indicated that, as the ratio of surface Ti ions/surface Fe ions increases, flotation recovery increases. pH regulation with an inorganic acid was found to be effective in changing the ratio of surface ions, and, hence, the flotation recovery.

Introduction This text is intended to provide the operator and turnkey contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc.. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science; however. the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to many metallic ores. A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper, elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.
