"The paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of determination of the optimum number of cutbacks of an open pit mine. Cutback mining is a dominating method currently in base\precious metal mining and it is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space by using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of the implementation of such approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks for maximization of the project value. A mathematical solution of this problem is developed with the utilization of a combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of an author’s method for production scheduling optimization, which uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of a hypothetical open pit gold mine to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the cutback geometry. INTRODUCTION The mine sequence optimization in open pit mining is a procedure that predetermines the efficiency of the production scheduling optimization. From a technological standpoint, the mine sequence optimization deals with two aspects – spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the open pit design problem. Original results on the time aspect of mine sequence optimization are published by Halatchev [2002]. They reveal a wide range of the Net Present Value (NPV) variation for a multi-variant arrangement of mine sequence over time and using a fixed geometry of the cutbacks, which determines the economic potential of a single open pit mine from a deterministic standpoint. The results show a range of NPV variation up to 30% depending on the stripping ratio of the mine. The effect of this variation is mainly due to the implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment in the scheduling optimization and using all theoretically possible variants of mine sequence arrangement by the inclusion of the bench sequences over the Life-Of-Mine (LOM) in the production process."

Conventional triboelectrification based dry coal beneficiation methods require ground coal as a prerequisite feed material, energy intensive static-in-line mixer or cyclonic tribocharger configuration, and transport and/or improvement in the design of free-fall separators to improve the separation efficiency of [me pyrite/mineral matter from coal. The proposed paper illustrates the two concepts. First, the use of ceramic media in a polyurethane lined attitor in achieving simultaneous grinding and differential charging. Second, the use of an electrocentrifuge to selectively separate coal from mineral matter present in the triboelectrified mixture. It is of interest to note that some ceramic media can satisfy the requirements of both desired density and work function to achieve grinding and differential charging.

The conversion to the use of commercial grade ammonium nitrate (CGAN) for use in blasting at the Utah Copper Pit of the Kennecott Copper Corporation has presented unique problems for the Drilling and Blasting Department, In order to better understand these problems, a' picture of the Bingham Pit might be helpful. Some quarter of a million tons of ore and waste must be blasted daily in order to keep thirty-eight electric shovels operating. All material is blasted by "toe holes" of 24 to 28 feet in depth, drilled from prepared drill grades and sloped so as to bottom approximately 5 feet below the bench level. Horizontal spacing of these holes averages 22 feet, with exceptions being made where faults occur in the bank. These "toe holes" are drilled by 4-inch drifter machines, mounted on self-contained mobile drill units using .3-inch starter bits and bottoming at a minimum of 2 1/2 inches in diameter, "Toe-hole" drilling amounts to about two-thirds of the total drilling. In the higher bank sections of the Mine and wherever necessary, single rows of "down holes" are drilled to 28 feet in depth and spaced, on the average 23 feet apart. These holes are also drilled by a mobile drill. "Down hole" drilling amounts to about one-third of the total drilling.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.

The phosphate formations of the Pliocene epoch were deposited along the coastal shelf of the eastern seaboard. The deposition of the phosphate is thought to be somewhat contiguous along the early shoreline, and the deposit can be more or less traced over an 800 to 930 mile path from the Florida Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers, to the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina. This is illustrated in Figure 1. Three areas of commercial importance are currently being exploited from this extensive known deposit: 1 - The so-called ?Bone valley? in Central Florida (multiple operations) 2 - Hamilton County in North Florida (Occidental Corporation operation) 3 - Beaufort County in North Carolina (Texas Gulf Sulphur operation)

Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge) are essential strategic elements that are extensively used as semiconductors in many technological fields. Owing to their essential uses and supply disruption, Ga and Ge are deemed critical by the U.S. They are typically found as substitutions or inclusions in zinc minerals. However, their distributions within zinc minerals are not well understood. To address this, trace element and mineralogy analyses of representative samples obtained from an old high-zinc-grade tailing were performed using various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These techniques included Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Tescan Integrated Mineralogical Analysis (TIMA) with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, bench-scale froth flotation tests were conducted to enrich zinc minerals, the major hosts of Ga and Ge, using PAX as a collector, Na2S as a sulfidizer, Pb(NO3)2 as an activator, and MIBC as a frother. Comprehensive characterization analyses of the flotation products showed significant enrichment of Zn, Ga and Ge in the flotation concentrates.

The Kennecott Copperton concentrator is currently the bottleneck for the Kennecott operation and several projects have been initiated to increase throughput. This increase in grinding circuit throughput has resulted in a coarser grind size which has impacted flotation circuit recovery. Metso Outotec 300m3 forced air tank flotation cells are currently utilized in the rougher flotation circuit at the Copperton concentrator. Higher overall recoveries have been observed on the newer Outotec tank cells compared to the original 85m3 self-aspirated flotation cells they replaced. However, coarse particle flotation response on these large, forced air cells did not show encouraging results when compared to smaller previously installed cells. This coarse recovery loss has been attributed to the longer froth transport duration and transport distance on large cells (100m3 and larger). Cell manufacturers addressed the risks of additional coarse particle losses in large cells by installing concentric circumferential launders and crowders (also called center launders). These are designed to reduce froth transport time and distance in the last cells in rougher stages where low residual floatable minerals causes a lack of froth mobility. The center launders also increase froth crowding, which also helps to increase froth transport velocity and increases copper and molybdenum recoveries. A trial set of the center launder retrofits were installed on the last three tank cells in one of the parallel rougher flotation rows at Copperton. The launder retrofits were installed at the end of October 2020 and monitored until March 2021. This six-month trial showed statistically significant improvements in copper and molybdenum flotation recoveries through the rougher circuit.

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limits during feasibility study and long range mine planning is becoming a significant practice in open pit mining. One of the problems in determining optimal ultimate pit limits using true optimization techniques has been they require a great deal of computer memory and execution time. In this paper, the maximum closure of a graph, which is a true optimizing model developed by Lerchs and Grossmann, is modified for solving ultimate pit limit problems. By using some properties of the original L&G graph algorithm, the tree configuration can be reduced to only connections between positive ore nodes. The modified algorithm is shown to require less memory and processing time while still yielding an optimal solution.

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

Results of regional analyses of precious metal habits in Arizona ores lead to interpretations of a fundamental ore control related to geographic location that corresponds with crustal contrasts. Measurements of isotopic and trace element characteristics of Laramide ore-related intrusions lead to interpretations of crustal derivation of apparent ore-related magmas. Interpreted regionally, the numerous kinds of Laramide ores, which include porphyry copper deposits of this southern cordilleran region appear to be phenomena of a specific crustal lithology characterized by a basement of Proterozoic turbidites and (an interpreted) lower crust of amphibolite. This association with a specific basement terrane may be extended in principle from the United states into Mexico where faulted offsets of this basement are similarly favorable to formation of Laramide porphyry ores -to the exclusion of adjacent terranes. Whereas plate tectonic mechanisms may have triggered evolution of these ores, it is hypothesized here that crustal setting and crustal composition are more profound influences of metallogenesis.

A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. Hydraulic blasting provides a continuous mechanized mining capability that is well suited for deep-level mining and urban excavation sites where explosives are prohibited

Networks of monitoring wells were established prior to mining at four longwall mine sites in the Appalachians to monitor the effect of mining on water levels, water quality and well yield. Two of the sites were located in stream valleys and the other two sites were located on hilltops. The depth to the mined seam ranged from 500-850 feet with the deeper cover being associated with the hilltop sites. Maximum declines in groundwater levels during and after mining were an order of magnitude less in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. However, water levels in hilltop wells located outside the area immediately above the panel were unaffected. Water quality changes in wells as a result of longwall mining were negligible at all four sites. Increases in aquifer transmissivity and well yield were much more pronounced in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. The significantly larger recharge area for the stream valley aquifers than that for the hilltop aquifers may partially account for the differing responses of these two classes of aquifers to longwall mining. These observations appear to be consistent with the stress-relief fracture model for Appalachian Plateau groundwater hydrology proposed by Wyrick and Borchers in 1981.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the use of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) for identifying changes in pillar loading at the Foidel Creek coal mine near Steamboat Springs, CO. The inherent three-dimensional problem of directly imaging coal pillar conditions is reduced to a single plane by considering only the load transmitted from the pillar to the adjacent floor rock. Floor strata velocity tomograms (at two pillar locations) illustrate that loading conditions are non-uniform and non-unique. Also, time sequence monitoring, as the longwall face advanced, demonstrated that SRT can be used to image spatial changes in loading conditions. SRT offers the mining engineer a simple and flexible technique for evaluating pillar conditions, and thus, both present and alternative mine designs.

The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomalous elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that the samples having the greatest anomaly-ratio totals can be recognized easily. In partial or full-suites-of-ore-elements the use of anomaly ratios is more meaningful than analyzed values because the ratios quickly indicate anomalous elements and call attention to samples and localities that should be investigated.

Coal mining historically has been a hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work.

INTRODUCTION In any large earth-moving operation, good planning and management are necessary to complete the operational tasks promptly and successfully. When an earth moving operation is complicated by radioactive contaminants, normal earth moving techniques and procedures must be modified. Any planning and management, therefore, must include the radiological aspects of the operation. It was found that the radiological aspects dominated most of the planning and management activities and were extended to all facets of the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. These planning aspects are discussed and their use to develop a work plan is described. The management aspects are discussed and their use to establish a management structure are also presented. PLANNING Some method of procedure, formulated beforehand, was necessary to govern the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. This procedure was expressed in the form of a work plan which served several listed purposes. 1. It defined the work to be done and the sequence it would follow. 2. It was used as a yardstick to measure progress. 3. It was used to assign organizational responsibilities. Several factors were considered to aid in the development of the plan. These factors are discussed below: Goals It was established that radiation exposure was occurring to persons working at the millsite, and in an around the community of Shiprock, from airborne radioactive mill wastes and radon-222 exhaling from the tailings piles. The goal set for the decontamination work was to reduce on-site exposures to levels acceptable for the millsite occupants. The attainment of this goal would also have a substantial impact in reducing off-site exposures. The objectives necessary to achieve the goal were consolidation and containment of the wastes. The former objective implies decontamination of the millsite and environs, and the later implies stabilization of the wastes. In practice, a total and complete decontamination of the millsite and contaminated environs would be very difficult and costly. The costs for decontaminating them could be high enough that an alternative method might be more cost-effective for reducing human exposures (i.e, move the affected people away from the source). The interim guide "Radiological Criteria for the Decontamination of Inactive Uranium Millsites" was used for the decontamination criteria (EPA 74). Briefly, the criteria state that off-pile decontamination should be effective enough to reduce the net above ground exposure rate to less than 10 [u]R/hr for unrestricted use of the affected area. When decontamination cannot readily be achieved, the exposure rate levels could be relaxed to 40 [u]R/hr; however, the affected area has to be restricted. The second objective, waste containment, means isolating the wastes from the biosphere. Since no method of containment was available at the beginning of the millsite decontamination effort, temporary containment (interim stabilzation) became the objective. The tailings pile and decontamination wastes would be covered with clean fill. The interim stabilization should last from 5 to 10 years until the final disposition of the wastes will occur. The goal, therefore, would be achieved by decontaminating the off-pile areas to less than 10 uR/hr where practical. The decontamination wastes would be used to plate the surface of the tailings pile and would be covered with clean fill. Radiological Survey The radiologial survey is the key factor for planning a decontamination activity. The survey should delineate the spread and depth of the contaminants relative to the decontamination criteria. Surface wastes, in general, can be evaluated for spread and depth with reasonable radiation survey equipment. Subsurface wastes on the other hand can be missed entirely, as happened during the radiation survey at the Shiprock site, although numerous exploration holes were bored and dug. The survey results can be used to define areas that may not be amenable to decontamination because of complications or safety reasons. For example, no decontamination of the bluff base was to be attempted because of the possibility the bluff might collapse on the personnel and equipment. Contaminated bottoms of decant ponds on the flood plain were not removed because they would be slurried by ground water. Slurry removal was deemed inefficient because the contaminants would be scattered and no equipment was available for its transport. In this paper, we present a physiographic classification of gravel deposits, identify some field measures of aggregate quality, and describe sampling strategies for mapping aggregate quality in the Front Range Urban Corridor of Colorado. Gravel occurs in four types of deposits along the Front Range of Colorado: (1) piedmont alluvial fans, (2) high dissected terraces, (3) high (continuous) terraces, and (4) floodplains and low terraces. The four deposit types are the basis for definition of gravel-deposit models, which differ in geologic environment, deposit characteristics, deposit size, environmental impacts of mining, and post-mining use. Of the four types, floodplains and low-terrace deposits have been exploited most for gravel. High terraces also have been mined. Deposits of high dissected terraces and dissected alluvial fans have produced minor amounts of gravel, mostly for use as local fill. Studies to identify useful field measures of aggregate quality and to determine the appropriate scale for sampling were conducted on gravel deposits beneath the flood-plain and low terraces of the South Platte River north of Denver and the Cache la Poudre River between Ft. Collins and Greeley. Gravel deposits of the South Platte were selected for study because they represent the last major resource of gravel for aggregate in the Denver metropolitan area. The Cache la Poudre valley is the primary source of gravel aggregate for rapidly urbanizing areas around Ft. Collins and Greeley. Of all the field measures of gravel quality, the most important is particle size. Various parameters that measure particle size were investigated, but the easiest to determine, and the most useful to the aggregate industry, are measures of the proportion of coarse sizes. Particle size varies widely in gravels of the urban corridor. Gravel lithology, particularly the presence of deleterious particles such as reactive volcanic rocks and decomposed rocks, must be determined to assess aggregate quality. Studies of South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels have not revealed large proportions of deleterious lithologies. Studies of particle shape revealed only small numbers of physically weak shapes in both the South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels. Particle shape does not appear to vary from place to place in the gravels. Rounding, or the ab¬sence of angular corners, may play a role in the tendency of loose gravel to yield under load. South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels are rounded, and rounding tends to increase upstream. Before the quality of gravel in a valley can be assessed, the stratigraphy of the gravel must be known because it affects sample design. If only a single gravel layer is to be studied, only the thickness of the gravel must be known before sampling. If, however, more than one layer of gravel-distinguished by particle size, sorting, or lithology-is present, sampling must take into account the thickness and distribution of each layer. For example, three gravel layers of different particle size underlie the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte. The tributary Cache la Poudre, on the other hand, contains gravel layers that can be distinguished only locally and vary slightly in particle size. Sampling experiments were conducted on gravel bars in the South Platte River and in gravel pits on the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers. Experimental results indicate that, even where sample error is large, regional and stratigraphic variation may be measured if it is large relative to sample error. Using vertical trench samples weighing an average of 40-90 pounds, down-stream decrease in coarse particle size was mapped for Cache la Poudre gravel, and differences among superposed gravel beds were measured for South Platte gravel.
