Techniques are being developed for measuring the mass concentration of respirable diesel exhaust particles found in underground coal mines. Studies have been conducted over the past five years to investigate size selective sampling techniques to measure the respirable mass concentrations of diesel exhaust and mine dust aerosol particles in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler. Three personal diesel exhaust aerosol samplers have subsequently been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. These samplers use size selective classifiers for the determination of the respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles. Their designs are based on the premise that diesel exhaust particles are predominantly less than 0.8µm while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 µm. One design, selected for field evaluation, consists of a 10 mm nylon respirable dust cyclone followed by a 0.8 µm cutpoint impactor and afterfilter. The cyclone removes the large nonrespirable particles while the inertial impactor stage, collects the mineral dust on an impaction plate and allows the diesel particles to penetrate to an afterfilter. The two sample fractions of the respirable particles (<0.8 µm and >0.8 µm) are gravimetrically analyzed to determine the concentrations of the diesel and mineral dust portions in the respirable coal mine aerosol.

The potash industry in Saskatchewan has recently been the focus of much new legislation at the provincial level and, along with other mining industries in Canada, also subject to changes in tax legislation at the federal level. As a result, the industry presently operates under (a) provincial production controls, a prorationing scheme; (b) a new provincial reserve tax on potash only and; (c) a new federal income tax applicable to all mineral industries. The prorating scheme dates back to 1970 and emerged as public policy because of the excess supply situation faced by the international potash industry towards the end of the sixties. This caused special problems for new mines in Saskatchewan and the provincial government decided to intervene. The new tax legislation at provincial and federal levels, both introduced within the last four years, reflects a belief that insufficient revenues accrue to the public sector from natural resources. All mining industries in Canada, including the potash industry, have had their tax positions completely reversed during these four years. Traditionally the mining sector in Canada has been a recipient of substantial tax incentives and has enjoyed low tax rates. This has changed and the mining sector is now one of the most heavily taxed sectors in the economy. In addition, the mining sector has moved from a situation where its rapid development was favoured by governments to a situation where this is no longer the case.

The mineral kaolinite is one of the commonest minerals in the uppermost 10 m of the continental crust; ranking in abundance alongside minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar and calcite. Only very exceptionally does it possess all the necessary properties needed to make it worth commercially exploiting. The terms &apos;Kaolin&apos; and &apos;Kaolinite&apos; are derived from a locality known as &apos;Kau-ling&apos;, in Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China; where samples of a white clay used by the Chinese to make porcelain were first obtained by European missionaries and explorers in the eighteenth century.

The NS9 Drop Shaft contract formed part of the Waste Pollution Abatement Program (WPAP) conducted by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). The contract involved the construction of two shafts, a deaeration chamber and connecting tunnel, and ancillary facilities. Portions of the construction were located in saturated overburden where dewatering was prohibited. Ground freezing was utilized for temporary support of the excavation. This paper concentrates on the freezing system and the excavation of frozen ground, with particular emphasis on the use of mechanical cutting equipment, including a raiseborer and a roadheader.

Feldspathic deposits occur widely throughout the United States, but North Carolina, California, Connecticut and South Carolina accounted for over 80% of the total domestic feldspar output for the year 1973.1 Pegmatites and granites constitute the major feldspar reserves of the United States,2 and in addition, feldspar is produced as a by-product by firms whose major products are spodumene and mica.3 Feldspar is concentrated by hand-cobbing and flotation; the latter forms the major method of separating and concentrating feldspar. Feldspar flotation is practiced in the United States, Mexico, Finland, Norway, West Germany, Japan and the USSR. According to the U. S. Bureau of Mines estimates, the production of feldspar in the United States and rest of the world were 704,000 tons and 2,514,000 tons respectively. Feldspar is principally used as a flux in making glass, pottery, porcelain, enamel,-tile and other ceramic products. In recent years, the domestic feldspar industry is faced with a number of problems. As a result of increased cost of energy and the introduction in 1972 of new legislative programs relating to air, water, and noise pollution, land-use restrictions, and mined-land rehabilitation, the production costs have increased. Apart from the increased cost of operation, an operational problem exists with the feldspar producers in North Carolina, especially those in the Spruce Pine area. This problem is concerned with the use of hydrofluoric acid in the feldspar flotation. Feldspar producers in Spruce Pine, North Carolina have been discharging process waste water into the North Toe River. The mill waste water contains active fluoride ions. The 4500 m3 blast furnace at the Redcar Works of ESC operates or, a burden of sinter and pellets, both materials being produced within the works. The early history of the furnace was given to the AIME Ironmaking Conference in 1981(1) when the burden was 65% superfluxed minter and 33% acid pellets. While ironmaking performance was adequate, it was felt that there were advantages to be gained by the use of fluxed pellets. For example, Kobe Steel had reported (2) that the rise of 30-50% dolomite fluxed pellets had enabled them to achieve better furnace permeability, higher gas utilisation, and enhanced ore/coke ratios. It appeared probable to BSC that the use of magnesia-bearing fluxed pellets would give a burden which had compatibility of softening and melting properties, i.e., fluxed sinter and dolomite pellets would result in a thinner cohesive zone because of closer matching of softening and melting temperatures, with consequential benefits on furnace stability and efficiency.

In the second quarter of 1979, ASL Inc. inquired whether Crocker National Bank ("CNB") would provide $4 million in term loan financing to help ASL acquire the outstanding shares of the S&S Coal Company in West Virginia. ASL had, prior to approaching CNB, sought financing with the assistance of a financial advisor from a number of commercial banks without success. A summary of the initial terms requested by ASL is shown in Table I compared with the actual terms the transaction closed with. It is not difficult to note that the two sets of terms differ significantly. This is often the case when financing requests based on the expectations and vision of a mine developer are juxtaposed with more pragmatic requirements of a commercial bank. The "art" and fun of structuring financing plans for mining ventures (highly leveraged acquisitions or grass roots) comes in working with mine developers to arrive at a final financial structure that meets their objectives and constraints as well as those of the bank or other financial institution providing much of the financing. This article briefly describes the process we went through with ASL beginning with the terms they requested initially and ending with the ones on which the transaction was finally closed.

Cyanide consumption at the Gold Fields Operating Company Mesquite Mine has shown a steady decline since the heap leach operation started up in 1986. A series of solution strength changes and equipment design improvements have resulted in a reduction of sodium cyanide consumption from peak levels above 1.0 pounds NaCN per ton of ore in 1986 to current levels at 0.15 - 0.20 pounds NaCN per ton of ore. Aside from the obvious cost benefits associated with this reagent consumption reduction, the property has also enjoyed environmental benefits which go hand-in-hand with these cost savings.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

The exchange of heat from wall rock to ventilating air was studied in a cross-cut driven through fresh rock on the 4600 level of the Kelley Mine, Six- teen thermocouple probes, 10 inches long, twenty-three probes, 7 feet long, and five probes, 50 feet long, were emplaced in the walls soon after blasting and wall -rock temperatures were monitored intermittently over a two-year period to determine heat loss from the wall rock. Temperatures, humidity, and velocity measurements were made of the air at the same times to determine heat gain. An important but less well-defined variable was the heat transfer by water entering the crosscut from fractures and leaving in the ditch. The balance of heat in and heat out at each probe station is within an acceptable range. Theoretical and empirical models for heat flux into a cylindrical opening fit the data reasonably well, also.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. The mining industry has seen a flurry of merger and acquisition activity of late. Rising metal prices, increased spending on infrastructure in developing nations and the growing demand for companies to diversify have helped fuel M&A activity in this industry. Many analysts believe that the robust M&A activity will continue, particularly if the demand for mineral resources in India and China remains strong. Because prospective purchasers need to evaluate the various risks confronting target companies, acquiring mining companies requires a considerable amount of due diligence. Of these risks, environmental risk is critical and warrants significant analysis. The failure to properly assess environmental risks associated with remediation, reclamation, compliance or litigation can undermine the transaction. Such assessment is a difficult endeavor, however, due to several challenges that companies face when assessing environmental risks. To make matters more complicated, despite these challenges, many sellers ask buyers to assume all environmental risks with limited post-closing indemnification rights. This article addresses the most significant issues that commonly arise when conducting environmental due diligence and allocating environmental risk in connection with M&A transactions in the mining industry.

It has recently been discovered that the pH at which gold can be extracted from cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines can be increased 2 to 5 pH units by the addition of modifiers. Under these circumstances gold can be extracted at pH values from 9 to 11, commensurate with the pH range found in cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for AU (CN)[-2] over other metal -cyanide complexes is presented and discussed. In addition, potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are discussed.

During the last decade, the feasibility of applying the in situ leaching technology to the recovery of copper from deeply buried deposits containing chalcopyrite has received much attention.(1-4) The major incentive for using this technology is that under certain circumstances, copper in deep underground deposits, which cannot be mined economically by conventional means, can be recovered economically. Basically, this technology involves rubblization of the deeply buried copper ore body followed by in-place leaching of the rubblized copper ores. Rubblization of the ore can be achieved by some suitable method such as the use of block caving mining. The rubblized chimney is then filled with water until the original water level is reached. Leaching occurs when the eater saturated with oxygen is introduced into the chimney- and flows through the fractured rock masses and within pores of rocks. As the dissolved oxygen oxidizes the primary sulfides, heat is generated. Because of low conductivity of the surrounding rocks, the generated heat is able to raise the temperature of the chimney. The increase in the temperature of the chimney and the relatively high content of dissolved oxygen in the leach solution under high hydrostatic pressure will result in an enhanced dissolution of the primary sulfide minerals. To ensure a successful application of the in situ leaching technology, a complete understanding of the effects of the ore particle size distribution, ore grade mineralogy, temperature, pressure, lixiviant concentration, pH, etc. on the rate of copper recovery is necessary so that copper can be recovered efficiently and the amount of copper extracted can be predicted. These can be achieved through mathematical modeling of the in situ leaching process and conducting laboratory tests. In this paper we will present a mathematical model that simulates the in situ leaching process as depicted in Figure 1. To model this process properly, not only the &apos;kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of leaching chemistry must be known, but the effects of heat generation, the physical aspect of fluid flow and other related multicomponent transport phenomena must be considered. Furthermore, since most factors involved in the leaching process change with time, a leaching system must be described using unsteady state equations.

This paper presents the ventilation design for an underground testing facility in a salt medium. The underground workings consist of two-12 ft. (3.66 m) diameter watertight shafts and approximately 6000 ft. (1830 m) plus of drifting. These facilities are designed for the purpose of providing access for an in-situ testing of a salt horizon in which a variety of hazardous and non-hazardous materials could be temporarily stored or permanently deposited. The ventilation system includes a design basis for gassy mine conditions and provides for the option of bulk air cooling and heating.

The generation and transportation of the airborne dust are mainly governed by the velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face. Generally speaking, the higher the air velocity, the more the airborne dust will be generated and the longer the period of the dust of certain size will be carried away from the source. In order to effectively prevent the production and the spread of the airborne dust, The airborne dust concentration distribution in the longwall face must be known in advance. Before the dust concentration distribution can he predicted theoretically with confidence, the air velocity distribution pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face area must be determined first. However, the complicated, time-dependent and unpredictable mining conditions along and around the face area make the theoretical studies of the problem rather difficult. For instance, one of the factors commonly affecting the air velocity distribution at the longwall face is the air leakage, either into or from the gob area. The leakage quantity and the location of occurrence differ from mine to mine, face to face, and time to time. They depend not only on the compactness of the caved roof fragments in the gob, but also on the degree of obstructions in the working space and in the return entry. Another obstacle to the theoretical studies about the velocity distrbution is the complicated boundary conditions of the ventilated spnce which is very difficult to represent accurately in mathematical forms. In this paper, the air velocity distributions measured in four longwall faces are presented. A statistical model for each longwall face is also derived for prediction of air velocity distribution in the longwall face.

The discovery of important new ore deposits of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955 in Southeastern Missouri has resulted in the development of a thriving mineral industry known as the "New Lead Belt" or "Viburnum Trend", to distinguish it from the older lead producing areas to the East. This region has recently become the world&apos;s largest lead producing district with production in 1970 reaching 432,576 tons or 74.4% of the entire United States lead mine production. The area is heavily forested with rolling hills dotted with numerous clear running streams in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. The location is within 70 miles of St. Louis, Missouri and has a natural abundance of water resources which provide an important recreational area for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities. Until this recent development, the area was sparsely populated and industrialization was almost unknown. The infusion of $150 million in mining capital has brought about a dramatic change in the economic structure of the area and will almost surely be accompanied by changes in its environmental picture. In an effort to maintain this bountiful national resource and to evaluate the changes occurring in surface water quality and aquatic life forms present, an inter- disciplinary research program at the University of Missouri has been undertaken with the support of the National Science Foundation. Research has been carried out to determine background values, establish natural baselines, and to evaluate the extent and causes of changes in streams effected by mine water discharges and wastewater from ore milling operations. The unique topography of the "New Lead Belt" area allows the channelization of milling and smelter wastes to separate stream systems (Figure No. 1) thus allowing measurements of the pollutional effects on an individual basis.

This paper is in three parts. Part I discusses the various types of cement clinker coolers now in full-scale operation. Part II is a detailed study of the criteria for selection of the type of cement clinker cooler best suited for a given installation. Part III covers a number of cooling problems and their solutions in some of the metals industries. The large and world-wide problem of cement clinker cooling has motivated much study and development and the coverage here of this work is somewhat detailed. In contrast the cooling problems of the metals industries are quite varied between industries and often quite different from plant to plant in the same industry because of basic differences in the requirements of the particular material being processed. Therefore the coverage of metals industries coolers is somewhat more general. It is believed that all of the technology covered here may be of interest to those working with the problems of cooling hot materials.

Optimization of a load-haul system for a surface mine involves two processes. The first is proper selection of mining equipment compatible with the minesite job specifications and the second is an efficient utilization of this equipment. All things being equal optimal productivity and cost is achieved when the capacity of the hauling equipment is matched at all times with that of the loading equipment.
