No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for those of us in the coal industry -particularly in Asia -the preponderance of the power plants being planned or under construction designed to use coal as the power plant fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal, which has in turn encouraged many of us in the industry to develop new coal mines. One country that has enjoyed very substantial growth in coal production is Indonesia. This developing country of 195,000,000 people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands of Indonesia have emerged very quickly to become the third largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface mining methods. This paper will examine the surface mining of coal in Indonesia, as it continues to be an important part of the supply equation for coal in Asia.

A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

Application of shallow seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection, and environmental evaluation has been successful in a variety of geologic settings. Increased dynamic range of recording equipment and decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m in coal seams as thin as 2 m at depths of 200 m. Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m can be detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been effectively mapped with high resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 to over 300 m. Faults in sulfur-bearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to significantly enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. INTRODUCTION Virtually every sector of society in our country feels the impact of tunnels, either through the transportation of water, commodities, or people. The economic implications are staggering. The Committee on Rapid Excavation (1) reported that during the near future, 1968-1975, underground excavation activity will comprise 946 miles of tunnels (subways: 85 miles; underground urban highways: 123 miles; intercity highway tunnels: 210 miles; water supply tunnels: 528 miles) and 5,119 million tons of crude ore; metals: 874 million tons; nonmetals: 899 million tons; and coal: 3,346 million tons. It is estimated that the cumulative demand for underground excavation in the decade 1970-1979 will be 13 billion dollars for construction-oriented demand and 16 billion dollars for mining-oriented demand. The respective figures for the decade 1980-1989 are estimated at 22 billion dollars and 18 billion dollars. Of the many advantages claimed for tunnels (2, 3, 4, 5) the environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important. Transportation tunnels particularly for rapid transit systems, offer reductions in noise pollution and air pollution while improving aesthetics and optimizing land use (fewer problems of right-of-way and disruption of utilities). Considerable interest has been shown recently in sub-surface construction and mining (6, 7, 8). Recognizing the future demands for tunnels has led to considerable study of methods to improve rates of tunnel advance per day, safety, and the overall economics. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

Our efforts at McNally, to find a better way to mechanically separate particles from liquid in a slurry have led to the development of two new centrifuges. The first unit utilizes a slotted opening screen as the filter media and retains all plus 200 Mesh and most of the 200 by 300 Mesh particles. The second unit is a solid bowl centrifuge with a novel method of removing the solids and delivers an effluent containing as little as 300 PPM solids in suspension. The first unit was designed to separate particles in the range of about 1 MM x 0 or smaller top size from the liquid slurry and produce solids having low surface moisture content, and a liquid concentrate containing a low percentage of solids. A prototype of this unit has been in the field undergoing tests for over two years. A few of these test results are shown in Tables I & 11. Testing has been mostly limited to the field of coal, how- ever this does not mean that the machine would accept only coal slurries. The machine has produced a dewatered product having as low as 5.5% surface moisture, and an effluent containing as low as 1.4% solids and handled slurries containing from 15 to 50% solids by weight.

Since 1970 a new series of pneumo-mechanical flotation machines has been developed by Outokumpu Oy. The cells have a completely new type of mechanism based on a recently-developed theory of conditions necessary for dispersion of large amounts of air. The mechanism was developed in 3 cu m cells and scaled to 16 cu m cells. Rotor and stator description, scale-up theory, and practical experience with the 16 cu m cell are presented.

Increased clearance was required in two railroad tunnels that were built about the time of the Civil War. Clearance infringements, whether they be excavation tights or caused by ice accumulation, reduce tunnel serviceability. Achieving increased clearance often means disturbing the ground and old ground support structures. Access and transportation needs dictate how and when the work can be carried out, and strongly influence the design approach and the methods used by the contractor to execute the work. This paper explores the pertinent considerations of the owner, the designer, the field inspection team, and the contractor in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.

Blind drilled shafts are becoming increasingly popular as a secondary and sometimes primary means of ventilation. This is particularly true in the Appalachian coalfields. Some reasons for the rebirth of blind shafts are economics, timeliness, safety characteristics and their inherent independence from underground operations. Blind drilling has had limited use in hard rock and tunneling ventilation. Advances in cutters, bit design, equipment and lining systems have made blind drilled shafts the shaft construction technique of choice for ventilation specialists. History of blind drilling Blind drilling's roots include the Nevada test site, the coalfields of Appalachia and Germany, and the uranium mines of Arizona. Early technology was developed using a variety of equipment mainly of oilfield origin. Shafts completed by oilfield equipment ranged from the shallow 1.5 and 1.8 m (5 and 6 ft) lined shafts on the Nevada test site to two 3 m (10 ft) lined, 222 m (730 ft) deep shafts in Alberta for heavy oil development. Several of these shafts were completed to extraordinary depths. The record, completed in 1969, is a 2.28-m-diam (90-in.-diam), 1875-m (6150-ft) deep shaft, located in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory in Fairchance, PA, using ponderosa pine, red oak, Douglas fir, high and low volatile coals, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) conveyor belts, No. 2 diesel fuel and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters, producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (Litton et al., 1991). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing designs and estimating costs for vertical in situ copper mining wells as part of its in situ mining research program. Conceptual designs and estimated costs for "deep" 1100 m (3600 ft) recovery and injection wells in an undisturbed copper ore zone are presented. Within a single in situ copper mining well, multiple perforated well completions and associated costs are discussed for two ore zones between depths of 370 m (1200 ft) and 550 m (1800 ft). The order of well specifications for designing these wells is explained.

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

Current Army tunnel destruction criteria (1) are based on limited nuclear-explosive (NE) and high-explosive (HE) test data. The PILE DRIVER (2) and HARDHAT (3) events investigated tunnel and support system response where yields were relatively large and tunnel diameter small compared to typical underground openings and localized stress fields of low yield weapons. Some limited tunnel destruction information was obtained from underground events of the PLUMBBOB and HARDTACK II Series (4). These events used access drifts which were designed to be self closing at the weapon point. The limited NE data are augmented by HE results from the Underground Explosion Test (UET) Program, a series of model and prototype-scale experiments in granite and sandstone (5). Weapon standoff distances (charge c.g. to tunnel wall) were at or near the maximum for major damage. Limited tunnel destruction was produced by a series of hasty and deliberate tests (6) on abandoned railroad tunnels in basalt. Additional HE data were obtained from model tests at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) (7) using 2.1 MJ (2 lb) TNT charges and tunnel diameters varying from 3 to 17 cm (1.2 to 6.6 in). Recent laboratory scale HE experiments (8) conducted at the WES under the ESSEX program investigated the effects of tunnel diameter, standoff distance, charge confinement, material strength and to a limited extent, tunnel spacing and liner strength variations on tunnel damage. This paper summarizes the analysis conducted to develop predictions for the effects of low-yield nuclear weapons against tunnels and underground openings in rock.

"With desert temperatures climbing high at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ in September, a group of editors were given a reprieve from the sun and stepped inside the new Cat Minestar Command Center. The movie theater-like temperatures inside were a welcome relief, and the computer screens stationed around the room were an indication of not just how much things have evolved in the mining equipment sector, but also a peek into the future of where mining is headed.Equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar have always had to deal with peaks and valleys in demand that come with mining, perhaps never more so than in the last five years. Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager for Caterpillar, said that in one month in 2012, at the height of the mining Super Cycle, Caterpillar produced more than 150 large mining trucks (haul trucks that carry 136 t/150 st or more). By contrast, Caterpillar produced about 80 of those trucks in the full year of 2016. Between 2012 and 2016, Caterpillar saw its profits drop by 40 percent.“This shows how cyclical the industry is, and it is a testament to the strength of Caterpillar to be able to tolerate the wide swings,” said Singh. Demand for commodities is once again on the rise as are commodity prices with many signs pointing toward a recovery for the mining sector, and Caterpillar has positioned itself for the recovery. During its 2017 press event in September, company officials emphasized that Caterpillar has added strength in its technology divisions by forming new partnerships and adjusting its operating plan.“At the heart of our enterprise strategy is the operating & execution (O&E) model, a strategic framework to identify areas of the business that either create or consume the most value,” said Caterpillar chief executive officer, Jim Umpleby. “Using the O&E model as a guide, we gain a deeper understanding of where we have a competitive advantage, which is key to generating high returns.”"

OSIRIS is a continuous monitoring system for respirable dust which has been specifically designed for mining and related industries. By using the latest microprocessor technology, OSIRIS provides a sophisticated dust measuring system which is a cost effective alternative to regular gravimetric sampling. The system is certified intrinsically safe for use underground. Up to eight underground OSIRIS sensors can be controlled and monitored by a single IBM PC computer located at the mine surface. This computer provides continuous and instantaneous information about the dust concentrations at the sites being monitored. Information is available in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives details of proving trials of the OSIRIS system in some UK coal mines. During these trials, adjacent OSIRIS sensors placed on the same underground roadway cross-section gave virtually identical results. Throughout a good correlation was obtained with conventional gravimetric dust samples. The OSIRIS equipment proved both reliable and easy to operate. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) has been initiated recently in West Germany with a 290 MW peaking-power facility utilizing twin cavities with volumes of 150,000 m3 each in the Huntorf salt dome (1). The implementation of CAES in several geologic media is being studied carefully in the United States (2); however, the use of cavities for CAES in salt domes or salt anticlines and the associated long-term stability of these cavities is the specific topic of this paper (3). The cavities represent an essential element in a CAES plant, and thus should be designed and operated to perform with "stability" over the planned life of the overall facility. As employed herein, cavity stability implies the extent to which an acceptable amount of cavity storage volume can be utilized with economic maintenance over the planned life of the overall facility. In this sense stability is relative to the planned use of a storage cavity. Figure 1. depicts the salt deposits of the United States (U.S.) (4). The Gulf Coast region includes the only confirmed salt dome basin in the U.S., although salt structures also exist as anticlines in the Paradox Basin of Utah and Colorado. Because of the relatively small amount of elevation change within the Gulf Coast, CAES in salt dome cavities appears to hold considerably more potential for energy storage in this region than more traditional "pumped hydro" systems.

BACKGROUND OF TARP The first settlement in Chicago in the 1830's was only 0.61 m (2 ft) above the level of Lake Michigan. The area was flat and swampy with local streams and rivers generally flowing to Lake Michigan. Repeated outbreaks of cholera and typhoid fever in the middle and late 1800's led to the reversal of the river system (away from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River). As a result of this reversal, the Chicagoland area has had to restrict water withdrawals from Lake Michigan and has had to develop and implement water management programs in compliance with orders set down by the Supreme Court of the United States. In order to comply with restricted lake diversion requirements and to compensate for a natural setting which was essentially hostile to human habitation, it has been necessary to embark on the construction of massive public works which include the world's largest water filtration plants, the world's largest wastewater treatment plants and finally the construction of TARP. The rivers and streams in the Chicago area are the headwaters of the Illinois waterway system. These headwaters are heavily polluted from combined sewer overflows of the area. Present pollution control laws require that combined sewer overflows be eliminated so that the rivers and streams can be used by the citizens of Cook, Du Page and Will Counties and other downstream communities. Fifty-three of the older most densely populated communities including the City of Chicago, covering an area of 971 sq km (375 sq miles), are served by combined sewers. This paper describes and demonstrates the application of systems analysis and mathematical modeling techniques in the planning of actual tunnel projects and research and development to improve tunneling techniques. A recently completed tunnel project located in Utah is used as an example. Although cost estimating computer programs are used in tunnel project planning, the introduction of performance modeling, simulating the time to excavate, has added advantages that are explored here. The performance/cost tunneling model (TM) described herein mathematically simulates on a high-speed digital computer the important activities of a number of tunneling techniques accounting for activity interactions, variable external environments, mechanical failure, and other uncertainties. A cost accounting segment is included to facilitate cost-effectiveness comparisons. It is shown that, when combined with informed judgment and appreciation of limitations, the TM can be a useful tool that may help improve tunneling operations and cost estimation, for example, by achieving more balanced system designs or bounding the performance/cost implications of geologic and other uncertainties. Ultimately, this might lead to more competitive bids and greater profits. The need for systems analysis and modeling in tunneling research and development (R&D) is well recognized and documented.(1-5) In R&D one must seek broadly useful solutions to the basic problems of face fragmentation, materials handling, ground support, and environmental control. These solutions must take account of the interdependence of these elements and, for a variety of ground conditions, the limitations or constraints that any innovation in one element may impose on total system performance and cost. An examination of the statistics of the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals an increasing tendency for fertilizer manufacturing activity to concentrate in phosphate rock mining areas. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping more valuable finished fertilizers will always be resolved in favor of the latter if cost considerations control the decision. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer manufacturing capacity oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent these changes are. These questions are the subject of this investigation.
