"The Contract C310 is part of the current biggest infrastructure project of Europe “Crossrail” which is a major new cross-London rail link project and comprises the construction of the North Woolwich Portal, Plumstead Portal and the twin tube Thames Tunnels with a length of approximately 2.6km. Two Mix-Shield TBMs (Diameter 7.12m) were driving through differing challenging ground conditions (Thanet Sand, Gravels, Flint and Chalk) below the ground water table. The two tunnels were underpassing several listed buildings, sensitive structures, operational railway tracks with low overburden and close to existing subway tunnels in an urban environment. Several additional measures as compensation grouting, micro piles and an intensive monitoring has been carried out to ensure a safe tunnelling process. PROJECT OVERVIEW CROSSRAIL Project Crossrail Crossrail is currently the biggest infrastructure project in Europe which has been developed to serve London and the southeast of England. The project includes the construction of twin-bore tunnels on a west-east alignment under central London and the upgrading of existing National Rail lines to the east and west of central London. The new rail track, as shown in Figure 1, starting in Shenfield/ Abbey Wood in the east of London and ending in Reading / Heathrow Airport in the west of London, includes the construction of nine central area stations, providing interchange with London Underground, National Rail and London Bus services, and the upgrading or renewal of existing stations outside central London.Altogether there will be 118km of new rail tracks, including 42km of tunnels and 40 train stations. After completion in 2018, Crossrail expects 200 million passengers per year (Tauriainen, Rädle, Ingram 2013)."

A full-scale reactive barrier was installed into an aquifer impacted by acid mine drainage in August 1995 at the Nickel Rim mine site near Sudbury, Ontario. The primary mechanism of water quality improvement is bacterially mediated sulfate reduction and metal sulfide precipitation. Dramatic changes in the groundwater chemistry are observed with up to 90% decline in Fe (from >18 to <2 mmol L-1) and increases in alkalinity from <1 to >10 mmol L-1 (as CaCO3). Over a 3 year period, the rate of Fe removal declines by approximately 35%. Primary controls on barrier performance are organic carbon reactivity, groundwater temperature, and variable residence time within the barrier.

Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

In April 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded the first contract for rapid machine excavation of a water conveyance tunnel . Since then the Bureau has excavated seven tunnels with a total length of over 190,000 feet utilizing rapid excavation tunneling machines. Tunnel bored diameters have varied from 9&apos; 0" to 20&apos; 10" (See Table #1) and tunnel lengths from 5,000 feet to 67,000 feet. Driver and cutter units varied from 43 rolling teeth and eight rolling discs mounted on a rotating head driven by five 200 HP 23,000 volt electric motors to 20 discs and one tricone unit mounted on a rotating head driven by two 100 HP 440 volt motors. All tunnels were driven with a laser beam guidance system governing both line and grade. Trailing conveyors and rail haulage systems were used to dispose of the excavated material. Approved Bureau of Mines diesel locomotive engines for waste trains were prevalent power sources supplemented by battery units on some projects. Sandstone, conglomerates, agglomerates, siltstone, shale, and granite were the geological formations encountered, with sandstone and shale the preponderant material . Tunnel support systems utilized were structural steel ribs; rock bolts and metal plates; and shotcrete, or combinations of these. Progress varied from 51-1/2 feet to 154 feet per working day for three shifts, depending on rock material and supports required. One contractor established a record rate of advance of over 400 feet in one day, 1,905 feet in one week, and 6,848 feet in one month. Such diversified experience in underground machine excavation methods presented an excellent opportunity to observe, analyze, and evaluate associated environmental health problems. Mechanical sorting of "poor" rock accumulated from past native copper mining operations has been under study at the Michigan Tech&apos;s Institute of Mineral Research for several years. Prior to this work, the poor rock dumps totaling approximately 9 million tons containing an estimated 35-70 million pounds of copper (1) have been considered mainly as a local source of road aggregate used from time to time and consequently of minor value. An electro¬mechanical sorting machine developed by International Sorting Systems Corporation of Santa Barbara, California has been tested for preconcentration of the waste rock before conventional milling (2,3). The ISSC machine has possibilities for underground preconcentration of crushed mine-run native copper ores. The objective of the study described here was to provide information about limi¬tations on sortability due to characteristics of the ore and present crushing practices. When the native copper mines were in operation prior to termination in 1969, two types of ore were produced, amygdaloidal and conglomeritic. In the first type copper occurs in vesicles left by gas bubbles entrapped during rapid cooling of the tops of lava flows. The conglomeritic ore beds consist of rounded pebbles and fragments cemented together by calcite, epidote, chlorite, and feldspar; the copper occurs around pebbles, in cracks, and sometimes as partial or total re¬placements of pebbles. The copper in the conglomeritic ore usually is in finer grain sizes than that in the amygdaloidal ore, and large (plus 4 inch) copper masses are virtually absent.

The first of two initial 650-mw units of the Paradise Steam Station, located on the banks of the Green River in the south-central portion of the western Kentucky coal basin, is scheduled for operation in late fall of 1962. Location of the site is shown on the map of figure 1. This plant will be the eighth, large-capacity,, modern station built by TVA in a series starting with Johnsonville, operated first in 1951. During that period of 10 years,, unit sizes have increased from a capability of 125 mw to 500 mw at the recently completed Widows Creek Unit 7 addition and at Paradise to 650 mw. This new unit will take its place in a power system that serves an area of some 80,000; square miles with a present installed capacity of over 12,000 mw. Upon completion of the Paradise units and other additional hydro and steam units presently under construction, the system capacity will have reached over 15,000 mw. Projected load estimates indicate that this system will provide a margin&apos; of slightly under 10 percent of dependable capacity above peak demand at that tire. One Paradise 650-mw unit at that time will represent approximately 4 percent of the total system installed capacity.

Premining investigations involve the determination of roof, floor, and coal seam characteristics to delineate areas of troublesome ground control prior to development of a mine. Data obtained can be useful in mine design, equipment selection, estimation of face productivity, development of ground control plans and assessing ground control costs, and in conducting feasibility studies and financial analyses. This paper discusses 1) the causative factors associated with ground instability, 2) how useful data can be obtained for these factors during premining investigations, and 3) analysis techniques to delineate probable areas of ground instability.

This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. Bacterial pretreatment was evaluated as a process for enhancing gold recovery from a refractory ore from Newmont Cold&apos;s Cold Quarry deposit. This ore is refractory due to sulfide locking of the gold and preg-robbing carbon. The microbe Thiobacillus ferrooxidans effectively oxidized the sulfide component of the ore, but the preg-robbing carbon continued to be active. Thiourea was examined as an alternative to cyanide for extraction of the gold from the biooxidized ore. The thiourea, coupled with CIL, was effective for gold extraction resulting in up to 89% gold recovery for the sulfidic-carbonaceous refractory ore. The thiourea gold complex appears not to be bound by the preg- robbing carbon of the ore when in the presence of recovery carbon (CIL)

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

From the surface mines of Ptolemais basin 48 samples of Pliocene lignite were collected. The samples were analysed using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INNA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) for determining the concentrations of 39 trace elements. The contents of sulphur and ash and the loss of ignition were also determined. The chemical affinity of these trace elements was estimated based on 40 correlation diagrams between the elements concentrations and the ash content of the collected lignite samples. According to the obtained results, 18 elements have inorganic affinity (Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Sc, Th, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Yb, Lu, ?n, Ba, ?, Sn, ?r) and 10 elements have inter-mediate affinity (As, U, ?r, Pb, Cu, Sb, Sr, S, Ni, V). The remaining 12 elements (Au, Ir, ??, Rb, Se, Ta, W, Tb, Ag, Cd, Bi, Be) exhibited concentrations below the detection limit. Thus, they were impossible to be classified in a specific affinity group. Based on the classification of these trace elements and sulphur in inorganic and intermediate affinity groups some useful conclusions are drawn regarding their behaviour during lignite combustion and lignite ash utilization and disposal processes.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is an important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate, or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced, the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. A dynamic input-output model for a coal power enterprise that now includes four underground coal mines, three coal washing plants, a power plant and a railway transportation system was developed. The model is applied to analyze investment alternatives for long-term development, including the expansion of existing mines, the opening of new mines, the construction of new coal washing and power plants and the upgrading of the railway system. As a result, the optimal investment strategy with capital schedules and projected sector outputs is obtained. Also, the importance of the new power plant to the strategic development of the company is demonstrated. It is concluded that, without applying a dynamic input-output model, it would be much more difficult or impossible to conduct such a systematic and compete analysis.

Fleet management systems (FMSs), as a pivotal part of any surface mining operation, need to evolve from conventional to intelligent systems because of both Mining 4.0 requirements and some shortcomings inherent in conventional methods. However, this novel transformation needs to be investigated technically and strategically. To this end, previously published research works on intelligent FMSs are explored to track the latest status of these third-generation frameworks within the surface mining context. Their underlying models are then compared in terms of five categories of allocation and dispatching features to pinpoint the technical gaps ignored. Having drawn the future lines of research, the present work then leverages the popular SWOT analysis method to outline the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with the advent of these intelligent FMSs in mines of future. By and large, the analysis indicates that advantages outweigh disadvantages. Solutions are offered to address the existing weaknesses and threats.

When the Henderson Project is completed in 1975, it will become one of the Free World&apos;s largest primary molybdenum producers. The Henderson Mine will be located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are currently estimated to be 303,000,000 tons with a grade of 0.49% MoS2. The mill and tailing area will be located approximately 14.5 miles from the mine in the Williams Fork Valley, which is on the western slope of the Continental Divide. Ore haulage from the mine to the mill will be by ten miles of underground railroad and 4.5 miles of surface railroad. The concentrator has been designed to mill 30,000 tons per day and will yield approximately 50,000,000 pounds of contained molybdenum per year. This paper is concerned with the tailing and water supply system for the Henderson Project and in particular the environmental considerations affecting their design.

This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). The large ratio of surface area to mass compared to larger particles is believed to make nanoparticles a greater hazard. The most significant trend in flotation has been the ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt that this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against trends such as falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. We comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 to 20 years, but in the meantime the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation as we know it will change significantly.

Fifteen samples of chert from seven localities in Ohio were tested for potential durability and reactivity in concrete. The tests determined are porosity, pore-size distribution, relative degree crystallinity, specific surface area, and degree of dissolution according to the ASTM C289-71, Potential Reactivity of Aggregates, Chemical Methods. The results of these tests were compared with petrographic, electron optical, physical-chemical, and engineering properties of the chert samples. Based on these tests, the important properties that affect the durability and reactivity of chert in concrete were observed to be: (1) porosity, (2) pore-size distribution or pore spectra, (3) relative degree of crystallinity, (4) grain size, (5) specific surface area, (6) impurities, and (7) amount and species of quartz present-all of which are functions of original composition, time (geologic age), depth of burial, tectonics, and diagenesis. Preliminary results of this study indicated that the geologic history and physical-chemical properties of chert vary from one sample to another, and any one or combination of these parameters affect the performance of the chert in concrete. These complex interrelationships are difficult to ascertain; if the performance of the chert in concrete is to be predicted, it is necessary to study in detail this enigmatic material.

INTRODUCTION The discovery of oil and gas reserves in the North American Arctic has led to substantial thought being given to their development. Systems adequate for exploration are not always, or even often, suitable for permanent installations. Combinations of offshore pipeline, drilling ships, platforms, sub-sea systems, sand islands and -ice island bases have been proposed. However, conditions in the Arctic are such that these methods may be difficult or impossible to implement. Problems exist with (1) the freezing of the Arctic Ocean surface for 9 - 10 months per year, (2) the movement of sea ice, (3) scouring of bottom sediments by ice islands and icebergs to great depths below the ocean bottom and (4) deep water channels. Any method which can avoid the problems associated with surface construction in these very adverse conditions merits detailed examination. One of the proposed solutions is to tunnel from a convenient or available access point to a point within the field, construct a chamber large enough to accommodate the drilling equipment and drill the development wells in a protected environment. Service and delivery lines would use the access tunnel and further tunnels and chambers would be constructed in a radiating pattern to develop the whole field. In order to determine the feasibility of underground construction in the North American Arctic, it is first necessary to understand the geologic and environmental factors which would affect such construction, to be knowledgeable concerning the problems and then to consider the techniques appropriate to the conditions which will be encountered, bearing in mind the need to minimize both con-
