The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. Specialty sand and bentonite are produced in the plateau province from the Bidahochi Formation near Sanders, Apache County, Arizona. It appears that deposits of both sand and bentonite formed during the Pliocene in fluvial and lacustrine environments, respectively, along the west side of the Defiance Uplift. The bentonite is an alteration product of airborne vitric ash that fell or was washed into lakes. In the Cheto district, the individual bentonite horizons, which range from less than a foot to more than 10 feet thick, are restricted to the position of the medial volcanic member. Bentonite production began at the Allentown mine in 1924 and the Chambers mine in 1926. In 1933 strip mining of the extensive deposits in the Cheto district commenced. Production increased each year to a peak of 270,000 tons in 1957. As a result of the introduction of synthetic zeolites into petroleum refining, production declined. About 40,000 tons of bentonite are currently produced from the district each year. Bentonite is shipped out of State for processing into desiccants, thickeners, and acid-activated clay products. The specialty sand was derived from Permian sandstones and deposited by streams draining the Defiance Uplift. Although stream channels are usually restricted to the upper member of the Bidahochi, stratigraphically above the bentonite horizon, a few actually cut through the bentonite. The well-sorted sand, suitable for use as a proppant in hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells, is localized in elongate lenses along the margins of the channels. These lenses range from 5 to 50 feet in thickness and often extend thousands of feet in both width and length. The sand is about 97 percent silica, has a yield of 40 percent in the minus 20 plus 40 mesh size fraction, and has a roundness of 0.6 to 0.7 on the Krumbein scale. Production of this sand began about 1961. All of the current production, which amounts to about 40,000 tons per year, is sold in the petroleum-producing area near Farmington, New Mexico.

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research is leading an interdisciplinary coalition to identify potential carbon sequestration sinks in unmineable coalseams as part of the U.S. Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership. The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research and the Eastern Coal Council are leading education efforts for the project, as well as specific outreach efforts in Central Appalachia in order to develop a process for stakeholder education and engagement in sustainable energy.

Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. The Investors Exchange attracts several hundred companies, each showing off their properties to the many money types who wander the hall during the four-day conference.

A major R&D programme for the application of bacterial oxidation to the pretreatment of refractory sulphide gold ores was started at Mintek in the early 1980s. This arose from an established expertise base in the bacterial leaching of base-metal sulphide ores. The refractory gold programme has been supported by a number of South African gold-mining companies, but major support has been provided by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa (AAC) and the AAC Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited · (Vaal Reefs). The Mintek-AAC collaboration has been formalized as a joint-venture technology agreement for the comme;cialization, as well as continued development and improvement, of the bacterial oxidation process (MINBAC). From a process standpoint, bacterial oxidation involves the contacting of slurries of finely ground sulphide concentrate with suitable strains of iron-sulphur oxidizing bacteria, which act as the catalyst to promote sulphide·· oxidation by oxygen from air. Process engineering is simplified in that this reaction is carried out at low temperatures and ambient pressures. The view was taken that the successful development and implementation of the MINBAC technology should be based on parallel R&D aimed at an understanding of the process fundamentals, the process engineering and scale-up requirements, as well as the ancillary requirements for the gold recovery-processes and environmental management. This has represented a major R&D effort at a total cost to date of around US $10 million.

Extensive exploration is being undertaken throughout the world in search for heavy minerals, particularly rutile and other titanium minerals. The federal government is sponsoring research involving rutile ores and recovery of stockpile-grade concentrates from domestic sources. Producers are being forced to turn to deposits with a heavy mineral content as low as 0.50% (essentially rutile and zircon). The North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory investigated the possibilities of recovering heavy minerals from the amine tailings of the Texasgulf Inc.'s phosphate plant at Aurora, North Carolina. One laboratory beneficiation procedure using gravity, electrostatic and magnetic processes, resulted in the recovery of 78.7% of the heavy minerals in the amine tailings. Based on this percentage recovery and the present rate of phosphate mining, approximately 13,000 tons per year of heavy minerals (principally ilmenite and zircon) with a potential value of approximately $1,045,000 (1977) could be recovered. The economic potential for recovery of these heavy minerals appears to be favorable. A flotation procedure for up-grading the heavy minerals content in the amine tailings has been developed at the Laboratory, which could allow for concentration of heavy minerals and storing them in tailings area other than main tailings for future processing.

In several previous studies from this laboratory (1-4) the autophobicity concept of Zisman and co-workers (5, 6) has been extended to gas phase adsorption processes. Low molecular weight alcohols adsorb on silica or alumina to yield novel isotherms in that monolayer adsorption occurs at low relative pressures indicative of strong bonding, but subsequently multilayer adsorption is quite sparse and diminishes with molecular weight of the alcohol. Such isotherms fit no standard classification scheme, however, in the vacinity of monolayer coverage alcohol isotherms give an excellent fit to the Langmuir or B. E. T. , Type I model (7). Monolayer adsorption is relatively irreversible and it is thus possible to prepare these chemisorbed layers and perform subsequent adsorption studies thereon. All indications are that the adsorptive properties on such films is radically different from that on the underlying alumina (4, 8) and in one study finite contact angles for hydrocarbon fluids were observed. One perennial conceptual difficulty is that there is no observed upper bound to the adsorption isotherm which would be necessary for autophobic adsorption to occur. The cause for this has been studied, and it is currently believed that adsorption is complicated by reversible capillary condensation at contact points between powder particles. The evidence for this is that large particle powders give less "apparent" adsorption at high relative pressures and in one very tedious study adsorption on planar sheets, oxidized aluminum displayed similar reduced uptake at high relative pressures when compared with high specific surface area powders (3).

Tunnel Boring Machine Instrumentation A 9.17 m. diameter tunnel boring machine presently in operation in Chicago, Illinois, has been instrumented to continuously monitor and record machine thrust, torque and penetration rate during boring. A micro-processor-based data logger capable of monitoring up to 60 channels of data digitizes and converts into appropriate engineering units the signals from various transducers mounted on the machine. The output from the data logger is sent to a teleprinter, providing a permanent record of measured data. The program control enables the data logger to scan all data channels at desired time intervals. Data obtained to date have been analyzed to determine the interrelationships of the parameters measured. Penetration rate was found to increase linearly with machine thrust with a unit increase in thrust causing more than a unit increase in penetration rate. For low thrust levels corresponding to the initial stages of a boring cycle, the penetration rate was observed to behave erratically until the thrust pressure was sufficiently high for the cutters to establish full contact with the tunnel face. Torque showed a curvilinear increase with machine thrust, reaching the design rating at about 70% of maximum available thrust. No-load torque was approximately 20% of the machine's rated torque capacity. Overall, the trends observed in measured machine parameters correlated closely with those predicted from experimental and theoretical boreability studies. In summary, the instrumentation system has mett two basic goals. First, it provided extensive and accurate boring data and secondly, it has proven that an automatic data acquisition system can be installed on a TBM and can function under adverse environment.

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

The most common method of treating mine drainage to prevent water pollution consists of neutralization and aeration. This process removes the acidity, iron, aluminum, and some other heavy metals, but does not render a water suitable for domestic or industrial use because of the high dissolved solids, hardness, and sulfate in the treated water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been sponsoring and conducting research since 1966 on the use of reverse osmosis (R.O.) for the treatment of mine drainage. This process has been found to be highly effective in the removal of nearly all the dissolved solids. In addition, since R.O. is a concentrating process, potentials for recovery of valuable heavy metals are possible. This paper is a review of the state-of-the-art on the treatment of mine drainage by reverse osmosis.

It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. It is possible to minimize the flattening of the highwall if the road width is reduced, assuming the width used is not needed to flatten the slopes for geotechnical purposes. With the use of autonomous haulage and pullouts, it may be possible to operate safely and efficiently on a reduced road width of two times the width of the hauling equipment.

This presentation will compare actual work site results for the loading and transport of shot rock for two major tunneling projects in North America. "SCARMAR" (the Canadian subsidiary of S & M Construction) is operating a rail bound Hagglund continuous gathering arm loader in combination with a Hagglund nine car shuttletrain system at the West End of Table Mountain on the B.C. Railway project near Tumbler Ridge, Canada. Al Johnson Construction is operating a Hagglund rubber tired continuous gathering arm loader in combination with haul trucks at the Rocky Mountain Pump Storage Project near Rome, GA. This paper will compare: 1) tunnel and ground conditions, 2) the total work cycle as it relates to mucking and haulage 3) efficiencies and related problems with the two systems 4) mucking and haulage rates 5) operating costs, and 6) recommendations for future large tunnel excavations. Under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the accompanying House Conference Report, the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines are charged with the responsibility of making recurring mineral studies of wilderness and wilderness candidate areas in national forests within and proposed for the National Wilderness Preservation System. The Wilderness Act, a major shift from the multiple-use concept of national forests, identified for the first time the value of mineral resource information in decisions for single-use designation of public lands. This concept was further realized when the Secretary of the Interior in May 1974 recommended that mineral studies be made prior to wilderness recommendations for five large Interior-managed game ranges and the Glacier Bay National Monument aggregating 7.8 million acres. Presently, our studies have been completed on 126 wilderness and proposed wilderness areas totaling 15.4 million acres in the national forests. In 1973, 1 year in advance of the act's 10-year review deadline, we completed the 34 primitive areas, originally the only potential additions considered by the 1964 Act.

Recently research efforts have been made to obtain a high-purity gibbsite concentrate, suitable for first-class alumina refractories, from a Brazilian bauxite ore containing gibbsite (50%), quartz (35%),and kaolinite (15%). Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis was used to describe the liberation characteristics of the ore. Experimental results suggest that the kaolinite liberation characteristics can be described by King's liberation model and that only about 11% of the kaolinite is expected to be liberated at a particle size of 75 µ. Bench-scale experiments for the flotation of gibbsite/kaolinite from quartz using alkyl sulfates as collectors were particularly successful at pH 2, and under appropriate conditions a concentrate containing 93.0% A1 0 (calcined basis) was obtained 2 3 at a gibbsite recovery of about 96%. Subsequently, the more difficult separation of kaolinite from gibbsite was accomplished by kaolinite flotation from the alumina concentrate with a quaternary ammonium salt at pH 6 to produce a high-purity gibbsite product, 97.4% A12O3 (calcined basis), at an overall gibbsite recovery from the bauxite flotation feed of about 90%.

HARRY HINDS: Our second speaker today is Rich Perry. Rich is the manager of leach and dewatering at Newmont Gold Company's Carlin operations. He has been the operator of Newmont's refractory leach development program for the past three years. Prior to joining Newmont in 1994, he was plant superintendent at the Big Springs and Jerritt Canyon Roasting Mills for Independence Mining Company. He graduated from the University of Nevada's Mackay School of Mines, and has lived with his wife and three children in Elko, Nevada, for the past 12 years. Please welcome Rich as he presents "New Facility Design Engineering: On-Site Versus Engineering Companies' Offices." RICH PERRY: Newmont Gold Company has been mining and processing gold ore at its Carlin, Nevada, operations since 1965. Processing is done using oxide milling, heap leaching, and whole ore roasting methods. Newmont began development of refractory leach processing technology at its research and development facility in 1988. The R&D staff focused on developing processing methods for low-grade refractory gold resources at Carlin that could not be economically processed by refractory milling methods. The term refractory ore refers to those ores that contain quantities of sulfides and/or organic carbon that result in low recoveries using conventional cyanide leaching. The R&D staff developed two potential processes deemed worthy of further testing: heap biooxidation to liberate gold occluded by sulfides and ammonium thiosulfate leaching for gold recovery from carbonaceous preg-robbing ores. These were piloted in small heaps by the staff of the R&D and Carlin metallurgical labs from 1990 through 1994. By 1994, Newmont's R&D and metallurgical staffs had unlocked the chemistry and kinetics of the two processes, and it was decided that the operations group would be brought in to begin development of a commercial plant. A project manager at Newmont's Denver office was assigned to the project. Scale-up issues such as biooxidation leach pad design; on/off heap heights; handling of various ore types during stacking and reclaiming; operating costs; and environmental, health, and hygiene concerns using a new process chemistry remained unanswered.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations), even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of possible explosion pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mine seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble, in combination with a conventional mine seal, so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed and attenuated, and the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a “passive mine blast attenuator” (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals.

With the Working Shafts and Starter Tunnel under way, it became apparent this 4.7-mile, 19-foot diameter wet weather tunnel was going to live up to its name. The shaft’s pre-excavation grouting was completed, and ground water inflows were slowing project progress. As the tunnel drive was approaching 50% complete a cooperative effort was underway between the owner, engineer, and contractor to raise the base of the Retrieval Shaft by 65 feet to avoid ground water infiltration construction challenges. The tunnel alignment needed to be raised in kind. The project was behind schedule and rethinking the cast-in-place adit work was next on the agenda due to the very wet environment in the tunnel. The race was on to finish the project within the owner’s time constraints while completing multiple redesign aspects of the tunnel alignment and associated adit construction. This paper will evaluate original design criteria and actual in-route design modifications and change management to meet the owner’s just-in-time schedule needs.

Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attention in a wide range of process engineering applications including process operations. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies applying the latest technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Goals of real time performance monitoring includes maximizing the profitability by maximizing production, improving efficiency, attending product quality, costs, maintenance, environmental and safety regulations. Designers must consider the greatly expanded desktop computing, Microsoft object technology, Internet and how to build these systems. This paper discusses some opportunities and challenges using objects, components in designing applications and integrating intelligent systems tools. Two examples using performance equations and IS technologies applied to mineral processing are presented.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.
