An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function model using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance model. The appropriateness of this model is shown for different batch grinding mills.

The Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area was deleted from the list of US Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the US Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found indications of precious- and base-metal-resources. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most of which were previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak mining district to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz and calcite with gold, silver, and base-metals. At the surface, these veins are poorly defined. Exposures of the more than forty veins examined were as thick as 17 ft and as long as 1000 ft. Samples from these veins contained significant amounts of precious- and base-metals-as much as 0.02 oz per ton gold, 2.1 oz per ton silver, 1.0% copper, 2.6% lead and 0.4 % zinc. No vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource was disclosed by the sample data. However, most do have indications of precious- and base-metal-resources at depth. Subsurface exploration of some of the veins is recommended.

The potential for roof falls in underground mines remains a clear and present danger for mine workers. An investigation of ground conditions in nearly 50% of the nation’s underground stone mines found that the state of roof stability is primarily determined in a limited and subjective manner. These large opening mines, with roof heights typically of 7 m or more, make physical observation difficult. Although some mines use monitoring techniques to gain additional information on roof stability, this practice is usually short-term and localized to address ground conditions in a particular section or part of the mine. A methodology to assess the risk for a roof fall is proposed in a preliminary fashion based on engineering judgment acquired from extensive underground stone mine experience and examination of related literature. The proposed method utilizes an observational technique to identify the risk of roof falls in three categories. Case study scenarios provide a realistic picture of model implementation. Providing the mine level decision maker with an accurate assessment tool to ascertain the level of risk related to ground conditions is expected to reduce mine worker injuries and fatalities. Moreover, the presences of danger can be overcome with a clear picture of quantified ground conditions.

Marcona Corporation produces about 3.5 million long tons of iron ore pellets annually on its two travelling grate pelletizing machines at San Nicolas, Peru. During 1969, these pellets will be shipped to customers in four marketing areas--Japan, the United States, Europe, and South America. All of these sales are on the open market, and product quality is a major concern. Typical chemical, structural, and quality test results for Marcona pellets are given in Table 1. [ ]

Placement of coal combustion byproducts into abandoned sections of underground coal mines for the purpose of subsidence mitigation has been investigated in Illinois. Several handling and transportation systems have been examined. Prototype pneumatic and hydraulic placement systems have been developed and demonstrated. The demonstration site, Peabody No. 10 mine in Pawnee Illinois, is selected as a case study. It is found that, for a project of 5 years, transporting 150,000 tons of byproduct annually from a power plant located 32 km (20 miles) to the mine would cost $1.80 per ton and placement into underground would cost $3.07 per ton.

This is the 12th year for this column and the 11th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. This year adds 20 to 30 new entries. There are, however, some deficiencies that the readership hopefully will fill. The most common mineral commodity is construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone. There are several states where no royalty information was available for either commodity. Readers can help share information about these missing states, so next year there will be fewer states without information. Severn Brown again sent helpful information from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). The summer 1992 issue of PDAC Digest recommended"... the most useful technical paper ever published for economic geologists...." "Net smelter return models and their use in the exploration, evaluation and exploitation of polymetallic deposits" was written by R. Goldie and P. Tredger (Geoscience Canada, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 159-171). Last year's column described leasing practices in Russia. Some new information has been gathered since then. Kirill Kavun is the managing director of the International Geoeconomic Center in Moscow. He sent two publications from 1992-"Regulation on the procedure of licensing the use of the subsurface," and "Law of the Russian federation on the subsurface." Both are supplements to the magazine Mineral Re¬sources of Russia, Economics and Management.

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

Peabody Coal Company is the nation's largest producer of coal and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1978 Peabody divisionalized its operations to establish more responsive and effective mine management. Peabody Coal Company's Arizona Division operates two large surface mines, the Black Mesa and Kayenta Mines. Both are located in northeastern Arizona, approximately 30 miles from Kayenta, Arizona, on the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations. The Black Mesa Mine produces 4 to 5 million tons of coal per year and the Kayenta Mine produces 7 to 8 million tons per year. Coal from the Black Mesa Mine is transported 274 miles by coal slurry pipeline to the Mohave Generating Plant located on the Nevada/Arizona border at Bullhead City, Arizona. This plant is jointly owned by Southern California Edison, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Nevada Power Company and Salt River Project Agriculture Improvement and Power District.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multielement ground support system, there is a need to know the support characteristics that the shotcrete contributes to the overall system. To quantify the support provided by the shotcrete, flexural strength tests were conducted with two common, commercially available fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) mixes using the round determinant panel (RDP) test method, ASTM C 1550. A portable RDP test machine developed by NIOSH researchers was used to determine the peak flexural load and residual load capacity for a steel FRS and a synthetic poly FRS that were sprayed using dry mix procedures and equipment. Besides the flexural strength and loading behavior determined from these tests, a method was also developed for measuring the width of cracks exposed on the underside of a shotcrete panel during a RDP test and relating these measurements to residual load values. Quantifying the peak flexural load and residual loads of a shotcrete mix through on site testing at a mine and visually assessing the loading cycle and load-carrying capability of the shotcrete applied to underground workings will improve mine safety by providing a better assessment of the stability of shotcrete supported entries.

This study aims to investigate the reduction thermodynamics of ilmenite and pre-oxidized ilmenite, and reveals the isothermal reduction kinetics of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate by carbon monoxide. The results indicate that the ilmenite concentrate and pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate can be selectively reduced by controlling the temperature. The pre-oxidation process leads to the breakage of complex mineral structure, and the formation of porous simple oxides, which is an effective method to increase the reduction and leaching rate. 

Researchers at National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating how fiber-reinforced shotcrete mix designs can be extrapolated from proven designs employing wire mesh. This paper explains the results of round determinate panel tests and relates the flexural strength and toughness of fiber-reinforced shotcrete to known energy absorbing properties of wire mesh. The energy absorbed with central deflection is strongly influenced by the amount of fibres. The higher the energy absorption the more load cracked shotcrete can support. Two types of fiber-reinforced shotcrete were investigated, one with steel fiber and another with polyfiber. The residual load supported in Round Determinate Panel Tests can be matched with the strength of wire mesh, thus providing equivalent bag strength values for fiber reinforced shotcrete panels. There is also evidence of a panel crack width comparison to the load holding capabilities of the fiber in the shotcrete mixes. In practice, this provides designers with a method for comparing the ground support provided by fiber-reinforced shotcrete with that supplied by wire mesh.

INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in coastal Virginia, USA will add two 1.5-mile (2.4 km) TBM bored tunnels alongside two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands. The site’s unusual constraints and the requirements of a large-diameter variable-density TBM shaped the design-builder’s decisions for handling TBM inputs and outputs, siting the TBM plant and supporting equipment, and sequencing tunnel-construction operations. This paper addresses the logistics necessary to enable key functions of the 46-ft (14-m) TBM and its ancillary equipment, including transport of most materials by barge, U-turn of the TBM on an artificial island, and delivery of materials for the second tunnel through the first one while interior structures are under construction.

Pilot-scale tests indicate that effective concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% -400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concentration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity ~1.0 t/h dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

The scale effect on rock properties has been discussed and studied since the introduction of the weakest-link idea by Weibull (1939). In this study, the capabilities of a dynamic lattice network model to simulate failure of rock under uniaxial tension is utilized. A number of randomly distributed microcracks that contribute to the development of uneven stressfields are introduced. In addition, each unit element in the model is assigned a random value representing its strength properties. Each application creates a randomly created specimen that is subjected to uniaxial tension. The specimens are grouped into three sets according to their size. The results of the study show that the scale effect is present in a statistical sense, i.e., the observed statistical distributions of strength for each specimen group is distinctly separate, and they follow the expected inverse relationship between strength and size. The observed probability distribution for each group of specimens give rise to the estimation of a different set of parameters. In this paper, the potential relationships among these parameters as a function of specimen size is investigated.

Since it was first introduced, the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground control problem. Extended cuts (cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length) are commonly used with remote control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof fall accidents. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted, causing hazardous conditions. Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended cut experience were collected at 36 mines in 7 states. It was found that when the CMRR was greater than 55, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken. Between 38 and 55, extended cuts were feasible sometimes but not others. The data also shows that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents (1) modified slipform system which was employed for simultaneous concrete placement for permanent lining and Instruction of a partition wall in the execution of a ventilation shaft 620m deep, and (2) current shaft sinking techniques which have been applicable and efficient for the subsurface conditions in Japan. MODIFIED SLIPFORM SYSTEM FOR PERMANENT LINING OF VERTICAL SHAFT General Information This paragraph deals with rapid construction by using modified slipform system for the permanent concrete lining and a partition wall of ventilation shaft, which has inside diameter of 620m and depth of 620m, of Enasan Highway Tunnel. The general feature of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 1 and standard section of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 2. The geological condition surrounding the shaft is mainly of ryolite and surface is of talus, but as a whole, they are rather weak and weathered rocks with faults, fissures and clay seams. 220mm borehole for the geological investigation was used as a drainage hole, predicting the amount of water inflow into the shaft to be 10t/min. The shaft was executed mainly by means of the conventional short step sinking method of 1.2m lift, employing temporary headframe and hoists. Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, Spokane Mining Research Division, is continuing its high-energy, high-displacement testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh and combinations of them. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can assist in interpreting the condition of installed surface support. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to better quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support.

"It is well known that tunnelling involves a high degree of risk. Conventional risk management only evaluates risks and chooses mitigation measures before the start of a project. However, mitigation measures also introduce risks, which are ignored in the conventional risk control process when choosing different measures. The Multiphase Risk Management Method (MRMM) takes the risk of mitigation measures and dynamic risk control into consideration. This paper introduces this new method and provides a flow chart for better understanding. A case study of the MRMM is given based on Ningbo Metro Line 3, the first quasi rectangle shield tunnel in China. INTRODUCTION Tunnelling itself is generally complex and involves a high degree of uncertainty (Huang, 2006; Thompson and Thompson, 2006). In recent years, several metro tunnel projects in China have been involved in accidents (Wang, 2006; Gong and Zhang, 2012).As a result, Chinese tunnel engineers are paying more and more attention to risk management in tunnel projects (Xiao-lin and Ping et al., 2009; Zhong and Jia et al., 2014), and scholars around the world have put forward many management processes. Existing risk management mainly focuses on a particular stage of a tunneling project. Tunnel engineers or other project parties usually carry out risk assessment and set up schemes or choose mitigation measures before a project begins. The risk from this initial risk assessment may be defined as the initial risk (Bai and Dai et al., 2013). This kind of managing process has been widely used for its simplicity and comprehensibility. However, this static theory cannot properly reveal the dynamic character of the risk during tunnelling. In addition, to reduce the risk from unacceptable level to acceptable level also calls for optimum measures. Therefore, the multiphase risk management method was proposed (Bai and Dai et al., 2013). The purpose of this paper is to introduce and develop the MRMM, and to provide a brief flow chart to illustrate the risk management process based on it. Finally, an example of the first quasi rectangle shield tunnel in China in Ningbo Metro Line 3 is illustrated. It analyzes the initial and secondary risk and sets up a risk control system."
