LITHOPROBE is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project that is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within 10 study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI) is exploiting the coalbed gas resource by working in unison with active underground mining operations. At REZ7s pilot project at the Soldier Canyon mine, Carbon County, UT, RE1 has drilled nearly 15.25 km (50,000 ft) of horizontal in-seam and slant boreholes during the initial two years of drilling activity. Produced gas has been sold to a natural gas transmission company on a continuous basis since mid 1983.

High-calcium limestones occur in the upper part of the New Market Formation, of Lower Middle Ordovician age, in Franklin and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. The high-calcium facies of the New Market Formation is represented by sublithographic limestone or vaughanite, which probably formed in quiet water; low-energy environments such as intershoal lagoons, or in protected bays similar to the present-day Florida Bay environment. Rapid facies changes are characteristic of the strata. The better grade of stone lies in the upper 100 to 125 feet of the New Market Formation and averages 95-97% calcium carbonate. Silica and magnesia are about equal in amount as impurities. One high-calcium belt extends from the Maryland state line through Chambersburg and Newville to beyond Carlisle. The strata in this belt are structurally complex, which requires careful field study' and core-drilling prior to exploitation. Stone suitable for blast-furnace flux is present in relatively large amounts, but stone for open-hearth use or portland cement requires more selective quarrying.

Introduction The cost of grinding may be divided into a fixed equipment cost portion and an operating cost portion. The fixed equipment cost is the amount of money required to purchase the grinding mill itself. This amount may be kept separate from the installation cost which, often, is taken as a percentage of the fixed equipment cost. A good average is 43%; therefore a $100,000 ball mill would cost approxi¬mately $143,000 installed. Operating costs are variable and paid per unit time for power, liner replacement, grinding charge replenishment, labor, and mainte¬nance including major parts replacement. Such costs depend on the geographical location and will vary with the cost of labor. Operating costs are difficult to estimate. Most mining companies consider such information proprietary. This section provides a means to obtain an estimate of the equip¬ment cost of a grinding mill with a rated accuracy of±l0%. Compara¬ble methods to determine operating costs are not available. Such costs are presented in table form with suggestions for updating them. Esti¬mating the cost of liners and steel replacement is possible as described in a later section. Capital Costs of Grinding Mills Grinding mill costs have been related,124 by means of equations and corresponding graphs, to the nominal horsepower requirements of mills. All graphs are based on a Marshall and Stevens cost index for Mining and Milling of 300, where a cost index is a ratio used to estimate current prices of equipment from obsolete prices. Where (Cost Index Now) Cost Now = (Cost Then) (Cost Index Then) (I) For example, the cost of an autogenous mill that requires a 3000¬hp motor is estimated as $500,000 (Fig. 95). This was the estimated price when the M&S (Marshall and Stevens, Mining and Milling) cost index had a value of 300. If the index is currently at 400, then the estimated current price of the autogenous mill is: Cost Now = ($500,000) (400) (300) = $667,000 Most professional journals will publish current values of cost indices at least once a month. In subsequent pages, each graph of grinding mill cost vs. mill horsepower has an associated graph of capacity vs. horsepower along with a table that relates mill size to horsepower. The associated graph and the table must be used with caution, since both apply to an average ore under average conditions. Example calculations showing how graphs should be used are shown in the following. It should be stressed that the cost data incorporated herein ex¬cludes the cost of pumps, motors, lines, and classifiers, unless other¬wise stated. Costs are not direct quotes; they are the averages of quotes supplied by manufacturers and analyzed by means of regression analysis. Example 1. The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile, and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geo-statistical simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allows a procedure for classification that maximizes expected profit. Geostatistical simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator, or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally-probable, realizations of the mineral grade(s). At each location, for each realization, we calculate the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a Maximum Profit Se-lection (MPS) procedure). We discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, is considered. We also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. We show the geostatistical simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig-limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. We compare the results of the proposed method to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, tests were conducted with a commercial poly-fiber reinforced shotcrete mix to develop a practical means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength. Full-scale tests were conducted in a test frame equipped with concrete panels having three distinct surface roughness profiles. Adhesion test fixtures either embedded or epoxied in the shotcrete were overcored into the underlying concrete, and direct tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength of the shotcrete cores to the substrate after a selected shotcrete curing interval (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, or 90 days). Measured adhesion strengths typically ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa depending on the curing age of the shotcrete samples. This paper presents the results of these tests, describes the portable test system components, and addresses some of the design issues encountered in the development of a rugged and reliable method for determining shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines.

"Sound Transit’s University Link and Northgate Link projects will add 6.75 miles (10.9 km) of twin-bored tunnel to Seattle’s light rail system, extending the route north from downtown Seattle. The tunnels are being constructed primarily in glacial soils using pressurized-face tunnel boring machines. Cover over the tunnel alignment varied from 13 feet to over 300 feet (4–91 m). Since the tunnels are located in densely populated urban areas, controlling ground movements and monitoring settlement were essential to success of these projects. Hundreds of geotechnical instruments, including extensometers, surface settlement points, and near-surface settlement points, were used in both projects to monitor settlement. The observed data were compared to settlement predictions made prior to tunneling, and analyses performed to update empirical factors to better estimate settlements. Recommendations for designing efficient and cost-effective settlement monitoring programs are provided based on the review of the monitoring data and analyses.INTRODUCTIONThe paper includes data from Sound Transit’s University Link and Northgate Link projects. These projects will add 6.75 miles of twin-bored tunnel to Seattle’s light rail system. The tunneling for University Link will extend the light rail system from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. Tunneling from downtown Seattle to the Capitol Hill Station was completed under the U230 contract, and tunneling from the Capitol Hill Station to the University of Washington Station was completed under the U220 contract. The Northgate Link extension will extend the light rail line north of the University of Washington, including approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of twin tunnels between the University of Washington Station and the Maple Leaf Portal and two stations, U District Station and Roosevelt Station. Tunneling for the Northgate Link project is still underway as part of the N125 project. At the time of writing, tunneling from the Maple Leaf Portal to Roosevelt Station has been completed. Therefore data labeled as N125 in this paper only include the portion of the alignment from the Maple Leaf Portal to Roosevelt Station."

State and federal regulations require that surface mine overburden be investigated in advance of mining for naturally occurring earth materials that are detrimental to animal and plant life or to uses of water. Proper identification of these toxic materials is necessary to permit development of environmentally sound reclamation programs. Intensified use of present laboratory methods to meet anticipated testing demands would be both costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the desirability of and general requirements for a geophysical system capable of locating toxic zones in the overburden of surface mineable lands of the Northern Great Plains Coal Province. The paper (1) identifies the types and character of naturally occurring overburden substances that must be investigated in advance of mining, (2) discusses the economic justification for development of a geophysical system to replace or to complement conventional laboratory test methods, and (3) discusses the potential applicability of downhole geophysical methods to overburden analysis.

INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1). The longwall face supports are provided to prevent the caving of the immediate roof at the working face. The thickmess of the immediate roof may be obtained from the working height and the average bulking factor. A strong bed, capable of withstanding maximum bending moment among the beds within the above roof, can be identified. The load on the strong bed may be obtained by finding out the overlying beds that will rest on the former during sagging. The limiting span, L, for this unsupported loaded bed, as a beam with built-in ends, can be calculated. The support density required at the supported span (face to goaf edge), a, during the first fall, is now estimated with a view to have a safety factor 2 at the face end, when bending failure occurs at the barrier end. However, the above value is inadequate to provide necessary safety margin against bending failure at the face end, during the subsequent cavings as cantilever, for L/a less than 20.6. d For the latter case a separate expression is derived.

Surface wettability, or contact angle, dictates a number of multiphase ensemble interactions that influence particulate dispersability and adhesion behavior (e.g., filler compatibility] in addition to a number of other phenomena including biocompatibility and bulk powder segregation. The wettability of particulate surfaces significantly impacts nearly all process industries; however, the available techniques to access this quantity are either relative, or tedious-and are application or industry specific. In this study, key features of existing techniques have been combined to design an improved method to delineate particle wettability that is simple, versatile and capable of providing reproducible measurements in an industrial environment.

"A supply of sustainably sourced rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for several high-tech industries, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Recent studies have shown that REEs exist in coal and coal combustion byproducts at elevated concentrations and in quantities that could meet domestic demand. Despite these promising findings, declines in rare earth prices, volatile commodity markets, and challenging geo-metallurgical conditions have jeopardized this potentially valuable REE resource. While the dilute REE concentrations inherently necessitate low-cost separation technologies, the ultimately operating cost threshold for economic extraction must be based on commodity price projections and market demand. In this paper, the micro-pricing principle is used to develop a rigorous economic model assessing the inherent value of REEs in coal materials. This model is based upon basket pricing of individual elemental oxides, and elemental distributions of coal samples from various basins. These results may be used to assess the economic viability of potential REE concentration and refining technologies INTRODUCTION Recent efforts by US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) may exist in coal and coal byproducts at concentrations suitable for economic extraction and processing. While the knowledge of REE occurrence in coal material dates back over 50 years, recent supply restrictions and material criticality considerations have prompted a national interest to establish a sustainable domestic supply of REEs. REEs are not “rare” in the sense of crustal abundance; however, few natural processes lead to concentrated ore deposits. As a result, the elevated concentrations found in coal material may provide a potentially promising resource for these materials. While the term “rare earths” is often used to describe a singular concept, the 15 rare earth elements actually have varying and sometimes contrasting scarcity and cost profiles. Various authors have proposed classification systems to provide information on REE criticality (e.g. Seredin and Dai, 2012, Zhang et al., 2015). The most straightforward classification is provided on the basis of geochemistry with designations for “light”, “medium” and “heavy” rare earths. Light rare earths (those to the left of the periodic table: Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) tend to be more common and less valuable when compared to their medium (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Y) and heavy (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) counterparts. While light rare earths are often found in traditional ore deposits at economic concentrations, the heavier rare earths are almost exclusively found as ion-absorbed clays (Seredin and Dai, 2012)."

The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted by-products generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining; (2) dyke construction schedule; (3) size, shape, and location of tailings-cells; and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailings-cells designs, decreasing the mining-cells volume and increasing the number of mining-cells improve the net present value of the operation due to increased operational flexibility. The model generated a uniform schedule for ore and practical tailings-cells designs for backfilling activities. Integrating tailingscells optimization into oil sands mine planning and waste management ensures the efficient use of in-pit mined-out areas required for sustainable operations.

The mineral zircon is mined for use as specialty foundry sands, abrasives, ores of ZrO2 and zirconium metal, refractories, and zirconium chemicals. It is produced as one of several products from heavy-mineral sand deposits associated with fossil shorelines. Because of its low coefficient of thermal expansion, its high melting point, its high refractive index, and its chemical inertness, it is an attractive refractory material. Zircon varies from deposit to deposit in terms of grain size, grain shape, and chemical impurity. Thus, there is a wide range of commercial products differing in impurity levels, particle shapes, and grain sizes.

The investigation into the hydrologic and hydrogeochemical influence of longwall coal mining in the Appalachian coal basin was under- taken in response to the need to technically address problems of damaged or impaired well yields, and quality deterioration. Prior to this study, issues regarding reduced aquifer yields and degraded water quality had to be handled in a very qualitative manner. Such an approach would, in the long run, claim a heavy toll on the mining industry. The primary objective of this undertaking, therefore, was to provide sufficient and reliable information base for the determination of the local and possibly the regional effects of longwall mining on well yields, and the hydraulic and hydrogeochemical parameters of the immediate surface and subsurface water systems. Specifically, the program was designed to supply definitive data to answer the following series of questions: 1. Does longwall mining affect the quantity and quality of water in local wells above and adjacent to longwall panels and barrier pillars? 2. If the water quality is affected as soon as mining takes place, does it heal? or if it is not affected immediately, does it change over a longer period of time? 3. How do the aquifer water transmitting characteristics respond to induced physical ad hydrologic variations? 4. What is the extent of the various changes in quantity and quality of the water resources? 5. Should and can standard hydrologic evaluation techniques be used to determine the hydraulic properties of highly fractured zones located within a larger and less permeable aquifer?

U.S. consumption in 1969 is estimated at over 5 million tons a year, valued at nearly $150 million, as shown in Table 1. Originally extender pigments were employed only to lower cost. They were thought of merely as adulterants to replace more expensive prime pigments and binders. However, over the years their role has become better understood, and today their main functions are: - Increasing strength, stability, and service life. - Improving surface properties. - Enhancing application and processing properties. - Extending prime pigments. - Controlling viscosity and package stability - Lowering overall costs of the finished product. The principal minerals used as functional pigments are kaolin, ground calcium carbonate, talc, and asbestos. Other minerals include barytes, attapulgite, diatomite, mica, ground silica, wollastonite, and nepheline syenite. Several synthetic products, including precipitated calcium carbonate; precipitated, gel, and fumed silica; alumina trihydrate; and barium sulfate, compete with mineral products. They are more expensive, but often have more closely controlled particle size or other properties because they can be tailor-made according to the requirements. This paper covers only natural products selling for $10 or more a ton, approximately the lower limit for pigment grades. Data refer only to consumption in pigment applications. For example, such applications as filter aids for diatomite are not included. Key properties of the major mineral pigments are given in Table 2. It is important to note that these properties are primarily physical rather than chemical. In general, these products are sold to performance specifications for what they can do rather than on chemical composition specifications on what they contain.
