The rock laterite was first discovered and described in the State of Kerala, India in 1800 A.D. by Francis Buchanan. It had been used here, and elsewhere in India, for many centuries as a building stone, but in Buchanan's time it was not known that some of these laterites were highly aluminous and could be processed to produce alumina. After World War I India started searching for bauxite reserves with a minimum grade of at least 50% A12O3. By 1960, it was estimated that India had a potential reserve of 245 million tonnes of bauxite, about 10% of which was in the "Proved" category. Subsequent geological exploration now reveals that India has an overall resource of more than 2 billion tonnes of aluminium ore, not all of it bauxite, as defined by earlier geologists. In this paper, the geology, resources and distribution of bauxite and aluminium ore throughout India are described. The generalised stratigraphy, typical laterite and bauxite profiles and summary of the resource position are shown in the attached Tables 1 to 8. It is generally agreed that a tropical to sub-tropical climate, intermittent wet and dry season, good permeability of country rock and suitable drainage, as well as physiographic and ground water conditions are important in the development of bauxite.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials is paramount to a successful lunar colonization. And several processes have been put forth to accomplish this. The LLOX generation schemes which have received the most study to date are those involving?: 1) the reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, C, CO, CH4, CO-CI2, & Cl2 plasma, 2) magma electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride-fluxed, and 3) several others, including carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reductions of ilmenite and magma electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes with various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at least at the onset of our considerations. There is an obvious need for considerably more experimentation and study. Some of these requisite studies are in progress, and this paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen from lunar materials.

Most oxidized manganiferous silver ores contain manganese associated with silver and are not amenable to conventional silver extraction methods, including direct standard cyanidation techniques. However, it is known that dissolution of the manganese might yield a suitable material from which silver can be recovered by conventional methods. In the segregation process, which involves heating the ore with a small quantity of salt and with a source of reducing agent to 680°C - 800°C, the silver is volatilized, migrates and is reduced to metallic silver particles. Conventional cyanide leaching is applied to the resulting calcine. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02 % Cu, 0.09 % Pb, 0.33 % Zn, 12.55 % Mn and 187 g/ton Ag to study the influence of roasting temperature and time, quantity of salt and quantity of coke on silver extraction by the application of segregation roasting followed by cyanidation. Cyanide leaching tests were carried out at room temperature on the segregated calcines produced by using an alkaline cyanide solution containing 2.0 lb/ton of NaCN at pH 11 for 72 hours. The results indicated that 97.8 % of silver extraction can be attained at 850°C, with 2.0 % salt, 1.0 % Coke and 30 minutes of roasting time.

The objective of this paper is to describe a study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy during which a model was developed to optimize haulback mining procedures in single and multiple seam contour mines, The study objective was to achieve financial- based productivity increases approaching twenty percent. This paper reviews the results of the first year's Phase I activities, which include four main tasks: formulate a methodology that can be used to select equipment and mining procedures that result in optimal performance in a particular haulback mining situation; conduct field studies of representative single and multiple seam mines to obtain quantitative background information for development of the formulated methodology: develop the methodology into a useful design tool for mine operators; and prepare plans for field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tool.

In this paper the effect of the ratio of grinding and grindable size classes (ore lumps, particles and grains) and the guantity of intermediate size classes in the feed of the primary wet autogenous grinding "Cascade" mill is studied and the features of the influence of these factors on the mill capacity are shown. On the basis of the experimental data from Lebedinsky mineral processing plant, where magnetite guartzites are processed, a coefficient of the "total ratio of size classes" in the feed of 9x3 m "Cascade" mill was estimated. It helps to get an evaluation of the effect of ore size classes ratio in mill media on the mill capacity and to work out some ways for its optimization in closed or semiclosed technological circuites of primary autogenous grinding. The operation of the specific energy effects for some intermediate size classes, removed from the mill as circulating load, is proposed to improve its efficiency before regrinding in "Cascade" mill and decrease negative influence of such classes accumulation in the mill media.

Long-term production scheduling design is a very important part of mining because it determines the economic outcome of a project There have been many attempts to solve the optimum pit scheduling problem, but there has been no success in developing a scheduling method to give optimum results in maximizing net present value of a mining project. Open pit production scheduling problem can be formulated as a mathematical programming problem and solved using Mixed Integer Programming technique. However, it is not possible to solve the formulation within a reasonable time since the number of integer variables required for the mathematical model is too great to do that by today's available computer technology. There- fore, a methodology is required to combine, or aggregate, the mining blocks and to decrease the number of integer variables in scheduling without losing the optimality. Therefore, the fundamental tree concept was developed in this paper to combine the blocks. A fundamental tree is defined as any combination of blocks such that: 1. the blocks can be profitably mined, 2. the blocks obey the slope constraints and, 3. there is no subset of the chosen blocks that meets 1 and 2. A Linear Programming (LP) formulation is developed as a mathematical model to find a set of fundamental trees that exist for a deposit. Since the blocks are combined to form the fundamental trees, the number of variables required for the scheduling model is decreased significantly. This decrease in the number of variables makes it possible to mathematically formulate the multi-time period scheduling problem as a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. A case study is performed on a multi-mineral copper deposit in Peru, South America. NPVs of annual after-tax cash flows generated based on the schedule provided by the "Fundamental Tree Algorithm" is compared with NPVs resulted from the schedules coming from three of the computer packages presently available to the mining industry. These are Mintec's M821V, Earth- work's NPV Scheduler, and Whittle's Milava open pit mine schedulers.

Most engineering firms engaged in the design and manufacture of milling components and systems have established, through the years, a relatively well defined system design procedure. The process design engineer has at his disposal several alternative approaches to the successful completion of this task. Unfortunately, while these alternatives, at first glance, appear to be rather straight Forward, any attempt to implement them into a fully integrated commuter design program becomes increasingly more complex when one addresses himself to the problem in total. This paper summarizes Kennedy Van Saun's approach to the solution of this problem through a planned system design. Following the problem definition and discussion, a detailed analysis and system design synthesis is presented; the major aim here being to provide a system design which may be programmed and run on a relatively inexpensive computer installation such as the IBM 1130 system currently in use at Kennedy Van Saun. A summary section is also included, which Provides a general outline guide to the program systems design of equipment which, while quite different from milling system functionally, nevertheless lends itself to the approach used in this paper.

Searles Valley is located approximately 125 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Basin and Range Province. Occupying the lowest part of the valley is Searles Dry Lake Playa, which is about 9 miles long and 7 miles wide. Three major subsurface evaporite horizons have been identified and are termed from bottom to top, the Mixed Layer, Lower Salt and Upper Salt. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of runoff from the eastern Sierra Nevada during Quaternary time. The saline beds are generally brine saturated with the important ions being sodium, potassium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride and borate. These ions are present in the brines in various concentrations and have combined to form the minerals halite, hanksite, trona, nahcolite, burkeite, borax, thenardite, sulfohalite, glaserite and others. North American Chemical Company selectively pumps the interstitial brines to feed their chemical plants located on the western edge of Searles Lake. Minerals have been mined since 1873, beginning with borax and trona scraped from the surface. Brine processing began in 1914 with potassium chloride and borax recovery. Expansions have added sodium sulfate and soda ash to the product mix. Currently, dredging of trona ore is also taking place.

INTRODUCTION The air flow in the mine ventilation network can be categorized in three ways: natural splitting, controlled splitting, and semi-controlled splitting. In natural splitting, the air flow in branches of a ventilation network apportions itself according to the aerodynamic resistance of the branches. In controlled splitting, a prescribed quantity of air is circulated through each branch. In semi-controlled splitting, flow in some branches is fixed to a desired quantity while in other branches it is split naturally. In practice, the mine ventilation networks present the latter two situations. Usually, the resistance of each branch in the network is known and the quantity of air in the working place is predetermined by safety considerations. If the number of branches whose airflow quantities are known is equal to or larger than the number of the fundamental meshes in the network, then the network becomes a controlled splitting network (Wang, 1982 a). Otherwise, it is a semi-controlled splitting network. If no booster fans are used in the network, the problem can be solved as either controlled or semi-controlled splitting networks in order to determine the main fan pressure and regulator size and location. All techniques are based on Kirchoff's flow and energy conservation laws and Atkinson's Equation. Booster fans can be used in controlled and semi-controlled splitting networks. It has been proven both theoretically and practically that using booster fans in these ventilation systems can improve flow distribution and reduce consumption of power (McPherson et al., 1985). The current techniques used in determination of booster fan location and size include simulation, linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. These techniques can be classified into two groups. The first group, including linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing techniques, deals with controlled flow networks. The second, simulation, can be applied to the handling of semi-controlled flow networks. Mathematically, the problem of controlled splitting networks can be solved more easily than that of semi-controlled splitting networks. This is because the controlled flow network can be formulated as a linear programming problem, for the solution of which there are several sophisticated algorithms. Moreover, the semi-controlled flow network is usually modeled through nonlinear programming, for which there are no universally applicable solutions. The procedure described by Wu and Topuz, 1986, can be used to convert a semi-controlled network to a controlled flow network, and the problem can then be easily solved by the techniques used for solution of a controlled flow network problem. In practice, a mine ventilation network may change from controlled splitting to semicontrolled splitting with advancement of mining. This dynamic nature of mine ventilation makes the problem more complicated and necessitates development of new solution procedures which will consider the overall economics of the system. CONTROLLED SPLITTING NETWORK The problem in controlled splitting networks with booster fans is to determine the operational characteristic of the main fans, and the location and size of booster fans and regulators. The objective is to satisfy the air flow rate requirement for each branch while minimizing consumption of energy. The techniques used for the controlled splitting network problem include linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. Incorporating a bottleneck analysis into the mine plan can provide a significantly better basis to make economic decisions regarding materials handling systems. Every materials handling system has a bottleneck. The bottleneck at a mine may change over time as a function of location or time. Since a mining reserve is a finite amount and can usually only be mined once, knowing how the bottleneck changes can provide a critical backdrop to capital investment decisions, especially those affecting the materials handling system. A bottleneck analysis can better quantify the expected 'return and also indicate the optimal time to complete tile project.

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

This paper considers the potential water quality impacts of future energy scenarios which project an approximate doubling of coal utilization from 1975 to 1985. The major impacts estimated for coal extraction are related to effluents from unregulated activities (reclaimed areas prior to stable vegetation) and pollutants (e.g., metals and ammonia). Where applicable, the EPA effluent guidelines to be in effect by 1983 reduce the impact of individual sources to low levels. For example, total suspended solids and acidic discharges are to be regulated to levels generally below recommended water quality standards for receiving streams. However, implementation of these guidelines, particularly for coal extraction, has not been demonstrated on a wide scale. Water quality is not expected to be a major constraining factor for increasing capacity of coal fired utility and industrial boilers. Water quality control has not been demonstrated on a commercial scale for coal conversion to synfuels, but adequate control technologies appear to be feasible.

Eveleth taconite company was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi range of Minnesota. Its thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minnesota, and the crude ore is transported by rail to its Fairlane plant approximately ten miles to the south of the mine, "figure 1". As is implied by the names of the mine and plant, the ford motor company is the principal owner of Eveleth taconite company, with an 85% interest, Oglebay Norton company holds the remaining 15% interest and also is the managing agent.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of a massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine. The mine employed a nine-entry panel system using supersection technique under a cover ranging from 91 to 168 m (300 to 550 ft). Chain pillar squeeze and large roof-to-floor convergence were first observed at the belt transfer point on the very inby side of the main entries. It propagated out by quickly, and, within 24 hours, it had covered an area approximately 1,250-m- (4,100 ft-) long by 762-m- (2,500-ft-) wide. The failure was caught and stopped by a solid barrier pillar. Using computer modeling, this study indicates that the massive failure was initiated because of a combination of undersized chain pillars in some panels and weak immediate floor. Also, the study shows that the massive pillar failure expanded to a large area because of the absence of barrier pillars between some panels and between mains and panels. Based on computer modeling, alternative mine plans were proposed to avoid such problems.

Fluorapatite is an important constituent of the greater part of the basic and ultra-basic rock members of the Complex. The evidence for and role of primary magmatic processes in the development of concentric zones of dunite, pyroxenite, syenite and carbonatite and its consequent bearing on the distribution of apatite are discussed. The presence of at least two generations of each of the latter three rock types indicates the cyclical nature of magmatic activity. Pegmatitic-metasomatic phases corresponding to the major magmatic cycles resulted in emplacement of pegmatoidal assemblages. The abundance of apatite in the pegmatoid can be traced to the composition of its parent magma and its cooling history. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes of phosphate concentrate are produced annually from ores containing from 10 percent to 25 percent apatite.

The flotation mechanisms of various flotation machines are briefly reviewed. The counter current column flotation mechanism is described in more detail. The merits of counter current column flotation include; improved metallurgical performance in terms of grade and recovery, effective cleaning action in the long cleaning zone with a blanket of fresh water, smaller floor space required due to the vertical configuration of a flotation column, low capital, operational, and maintenance costs due to the absence of moving parts and finally, easier flotation control due to the simplified circuit. The results of column flotation studies on various minerals and coal at CANMET are discussed. Some of the industrial experiences with the Canadian flotation column on various sulphides, oxides and coal are also presented.

Electrochemical oxidation of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) has been investigated as an attempt to gain a better understanding of its dissolution chemistry. Rest potential measurements, cyclic voltammetry and constant potential experiments were conducted in the pH range from 8 to 12 in the absence and the in the presence of cyanide. A two-step reaction sequence is suggested by the electrochemical measurements. The initial step is described by: [FeAsS+6H20=Fe(OH)3+H2AsO3- +S°+7H++6e] The second step involves the oxidation of the arsenite and sulfur according to the following reactions: [H2As03-+H20=HAsO24-+3H++2e and S° +4 H2O=SO4-+3H++6e] Stoichiometric determinations confirm that 14 electrons are involved in the overall reaction.
