This 1988 survey provided a cross section of computer software use by the US coal industry. From 1250 mailed questionnaires, 171 responses were received, representing a 4.9% sampling of the 3496 US coal mines. Since the distribution of responses by regional stratum matched well with the distribution of mines by stratum, the survey was given statistical validity. A statistical description details the computer use by region, mining type, organizational size, the level of application within the organization, the type of software application used, the variety of computers on which the software was used and the percent of users within engineering, management and general applications categories. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers at some level in their organizations. All of the mines producing more than 454 kt/a (500,000 stpy) used computers. However, for those producing more than 9 kt/a (10,000 stpy) but less than 91 kt/a (100,000stpy), only 44% used computers. Generally, the software applications were still data-processing oriented. The application sophistication grew with increasing mine size. Computer system models and configurations for different sized organizations are recommended based on the configurations used in the industry at the time of the survey.

The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite (Bayer Process) is known as red mud. Approximately one ton of red mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite mined. The red mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that more than 90% (by weight) alumina can be recovered from red mud by soda ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of more than 94%, resulting in attempts, for magnetic separation. These separations are desirable because there are no waste products generated. Consequently, there is an opportunity for complete utilization of the waste material. Conversely, the preseparated material could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace, or it could be smelted to produce pig iron. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag would be high enough to justify its recovery by an established acid-leach process. This paper describes the results of alumina recovery and the plans for titanium oxide recovery from red-mud. In addition, the situation of ongoing efforts in iron extraction, particularly, the method of magnetic separation of the reduced material. The problems associated with the use of reduced red mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron (DRI) is also discussed. It is now well documented that trace amounts of silver, gold, and platinum group metals occur in certain geothermal brine deposits. A significant body of literature has been generated over the last twenty years which describes attempts to quantify the frequency and levels of these precious metals in the brines. This literature is often confusing and contradictory. For example Barnea 1 states that the Salton Sea geothermal field carries 2 ppm gold, yet more recent data by workers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory2 (LLNL) concludes that the gold level in Salton Sea brine is <0.07 ppb. They report a platinum level in one well of 55 ppb. This apparent contradiction may be explained by sampling source and technique, but is most probably explained by difference in analytical technique. Analytical techniques and problems will be discussed in the next section.

For the next few minutes, I will be discussing a product and category that many people laughed at for years. The product is cat box filiers or commonly referred to by the brand name KITTY LITTER. This product was introduced in 1947 by Ed Lowe using the name KITTY LITTER. From 1947 to 1964 the product was sold mainly through pet shops. Starting in 1964, the grocery trade began to carry cat litters. From that point, the cate gory began a solid growth trend. Particularly in the &apos;7O&apos;s, cat litter has experienced the same kind of explosive growth that has characterized the entire pet market. For example, in the twelve months ending 9/21/79, cat litter unit volume grew by 15% versus the previous twelve months. The basis for this explosive growth is easy to comprehend. The cat population itself is rapidly expanding, reflecting the changing life- styles of Americans. As famiiies grow smaller, there is room for a pet. As apartment and con dominim living shrinks living space, a cat fills the human need for animal companionship more efficiently. Table I illustrates current cat litter market factors and projects major trends into the future to conclude that the cat litter market will equal $205MM in 1985. With this dynamic growth defined, it was imperative that a company such as Lowe&apos;s that was totally devoted to the commodity-priced products, evaluate the opportunities for added- value product differentiation. This process was started approximately four years ago with a search for new cat litter products and other new product opportunities.

The important characteristics of a gas-promoted oil agglomeration process for cleaning coal particles in an aqueous suspension were determined. Numerous agglomeration tests with scale-model mixing systems of different sizes with controlled amounts of air were conducted. The tests were conducted on high- and mediumvolatile bituminous coals using either i-octane or hexadecane as an oily agglomerant. The performance of the system was characterized by employing the minimum time required to produce spherical agglomerates (tE), the mean agglomerate diameter (dp), coal recovery and product ash content. Among these parameters, tE was found the most useful. It is a key parameter in the scale-up of an agglomeration mixing system. This parameter was found to depend on a number of system and operating variables. By controlling these variables and conducting further agglomeration tests with mixing systems that varied in size, an appropriate size scale-up rule was established.

INTRODUCTION FMC&apos;s Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950&apos;s. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll&apos;s surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll&apos;s surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll&apos;s surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll&apos;s surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll&apos;s surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco&apos;s Jacksonville, Florida, location. Results obtained from conditional simulations and multiple indicator kriging were compared in the assessment of two different mining methods proposed for the extraction of the down-dip extension of a nickel-sulfide ore body located in the Thompson mining camp, Canada. An enhanced turning band simulation algorithm, supplemented with an unfolding technique, was used. A floating stope optimization process was used to effectively compare tonnage and grade figures. A calibration exercise was also conducted in the upper portion of the ore body. This study demonstrates that conditional simulations provide better spatial models for conceptual mine design and capital budgeting decisions.

It was shown previously that chalcopyrite could be floated without using a collector when the ore samples were treated with small amounts of sodium sulfide (Na2S). The role of this reducing agent was considered to be one of a cleaning agent to remove the hydrophilic surface oxidation products. It was later found, however, that the collectorless flotation could be obtained only under slightly oxidizing conditions. This might suggest that collectorless flotation is not due to the clean surface but to the elemental sulfur which may be present as an incipient oxidation product. Therefore, a search for the presence of elemental sulfur has been made by means of ESCA, mass spectrometry, and solvent extraction followed by W spectrophotometric analysis. On the basis of these results, the mechanisms of collectorless flotation are discussed.

Surface characterization techniques, i.e. contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface force and surface imaging measurement, were applied to investigate the molybdenite surface in aqueous solution. It was shown that the cleaved basal surface of molybdenite was very hydrophobic with a 92 degree water contact angle. The non-polar component of the solid surface free energy is 50.52 mJ/m2 while the polar components are almost zero. The solid surface was not reactive and was only weakly charged at the pH 6. When the aqueous media changes from water to 1×10-4 M KEX solution, the measured contact angle, adhesion force and surface roughness all increase slightly. However, ethanol rinsing made the surface change back to the bare substrate. It was suggested that the hydrophobic chemical, i.e. dixanthogen, which was shown in the morphology of patches by the AFM image, physically adsorbed on the hydrophobic molybdenite surface through the hydrophobic interaction.

The Bureau of Mines investigated rapid bubble-pulp separation to improve flotation kinetics. A shallow-depth froth separator was employed to quickly recover the mineral-laden bubbles from a mixture of ore, water, and air bubbles. The shallow depth minimized the rising distance required to recover even the smallest size bubbles (100 ~m). Therefore, the slurry remained in the unit only long enough to recover the bubbles before the pulp exited through the conical bottom. Joining this unit with a rapid bubble-particle attachment unit, a rapid flotation system was formed that floated silica from phosphate in one-fifth of the retention time for conventional mechanical cells. The hydrodynamics of the rapid flotation system along with fundamental parameters for scale-up are presented in this paper.

This paper reports on recent modeling efforts to analyze the eastern U.S. steam coal market with a cross-sectional econometric as well as a quadratic programming approach. The background to coal modeling is examined first. The particular aspect of the steam coal market to be modeled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Both empirical results and rigorous mathematic pertubation analysis are presented. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modeling applications in the policy area.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

Porphyry copper deposits can be categorized into three models for purposes of prospect evaluation: Breccia-pipe, modified Lowell and Guilbert, and diorite models. The modified Lowell and Guilbert model is normally associated with a quartz-bearing intrusive and a potassic, phyllic, argillic, and propylitic alteration sequence. Variations can occur in the alteration zones of this model that range from orthoclase-rich (Kalamazoo, Silver Bell, and Mineral Park) to ortho- clase-deficient (Petaquilla and Bougainville) potassic zones. The unifying features of the model are the presence of a phyllic zone and a quartz-bearing intrusion. The breccia-pipe model (Toquepala) is characterized by structure and alteration related to or controlled by breccia. Where tourmaline occurs in the breccia, the identity of the model is usually clear. However, if tourmaline is not commonly developed in the breccia (La Caridad), the deposit can be misidentified as to model. Porphyry copper deposits associated with quartz-deficient intrusives, whether these are calc-alkalic diorites or alkalic plutons, are characterized by alteration suites distinct from those of the modified Lowell and Guilbert model. These have been generalized as diorite model porphyry deposits. Because alteration and mineralogical development in diorite model deposits is distinct from that of the modified Lowell and Guilbert, ore guides and exploration tactics differ for the two models. The reprint that follows describing the three prospecting models summarizes their features. It is to be emphasized that these are models used in exploration for specific deposit types and are not genetic, tectonic, or geographic models. Porphyry copper deposits can be metamorphosed. Gibralter is an example of a Lowell and Guilbert model deposit that has undergone regional metamorphism.

This study ranks the factors impacting survival during a coal mine fire. It has already been established that reducing time delays is the most important factor in saving lives. Consequently, every event during afire is measured in terms of its duration, and the effectiveness of any action taken to improve survival is measured in terms of the time it saves. By ranking actions according to time saved, these authors found that a combination of actions was most effective. This combination was: •installing lifelines, •moderately decreasing air leakage and •decreasing the fire growth rate. Changing ventilation leakage alone was much less effective, as was altering the CO (carbon monoxide), sensor alarm threshold. These results confirm an earlier fault-tree study on escape from mine fires. The fault-tree study had shown that, with the exception of delays, single-factor changes have minimal impact. Significant reductions in fire fatalities only take place with multiple factor changes.

The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (i) the amount of quartz in thesamples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls are necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples. In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.

This paper shows how the efficiencies of size-reduction processes depend on the mode of particle constraint and energy transfer within the comminution device: namely, whether the process consists of single-particle loading, confined-particle-bed comminution or loose- (unconstrained-) particle grinding. The relative efficiency of single-particle comminution, ball-mill grinding and particle-bed comminution in the recently invented high-pressure roll mill is evaluated by making use of the self-preserving nature of the size distributions of comminuted products. The highest energy efficiency can be achieved by utilizing a hybrid two-stage system in which the material is first ground in the high-pressure roll mill and then the ball mill.

It is easy for a coal spokesman to relate to the theme of this meeting--that the decade of the 1970&apos;s is pivotal for the mineral industries. For the coal operator, this period is crucial. The coal industry, according to most energy forecasters, must gear its production machinery to meet a sharp rise in the demand for coal--in this decade to sustain inevitable boosts in electricity output, and in the next to start supporting a big new domestic synthetic fuels industry that is already in the formative stage. The logic of that projection flows from a combination of hard circumstances--proved reserves of domestic fluid fuels are dwindling, the hope for bountiful and cheap nuclear power must be indefinitely deferred, and the threat of long-term fuel imports to the national interests is becoming starkly visible. Only coal, with its assets of abundance, security and versatility, offers the nation an adequate and immediate lift out of its current energy crisis. A hard-won expansion of coal production made the critical difference between local power load-shedding and major area blackouts in 1970, the year the energy crisis went public. Coal will have to play that same key role, not just through this pivotal decade but through the turn of the century. But the logic of fuel demand apparently does not always extend to supply. The coal industry has had a huge production job laid out for it by the energy statisticians, but up to now the energy policy-makers have not followed through with the aids and inducements that the coal operator urgently needs to do that job well and completely.

A modular computer program APEX (AMAX Process Evaluation Executive), has been developed at AMAX Extractive R&D, Golden, Colorado to facilitate rapid simulation of steady state material and energy balances of existing and/or proposed metallurgical process flowsheets. Currently, APEX is being used for the design, analysis, and evaluation of several of AMAX?s Nickel, Molybdenumand Tungsten processes. A unique feature of APEX is that it allows specifications of flow rates and compositions for different solid size fractions in addition to aqueous organic and gaseous phases. Thus, a metallurgical process which may involve crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, washing, solvent extraction, precitation and refining operations can be simulated in a single computer run using APEX. APEX requires two input data files. The first is a process data file which includes physical and thermodynamic properties of the various chemical components of interest. This data file is unique to the process under study and does not require changes for alterations in the process flowsheet. The second data file is specific to a simulation case and includes descriptions of the flowsheet, various feed streams and the process equipment&apos;s operating conditions. In addition to temperature, pressure and percent solids, calculated information for each stream includes weight and volumetric flow rates, chemical compositions, specific gravities and enthalpies of solid, liquid and gas phases. For each process equipment in the flowsheet, APEX prints its operating conditions and detailed information about the streams that enter and leave the unit. Models of several general unit operations are preprogrammed in APEX. Also, the modular design of APEX permits quick and easy additions of simulation models which are specific to new and/or unique process operations. To study process stability and optimization, APEX permits several cases of a flow-sheet to be run together. Three simulations of the Moa Bay Nickel process have been excluded to illustrate the ease and flexibility of using the APEX system.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain-setback distance, operator positioning and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels, on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3, were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust-control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m (40 ft) in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

Uranium may be in short supply due to the predicted energy needs in the coming years. As a result of this a new surge of uranium exploration is underway. The refinement of numerous exploration techniques has accompanied this surge. One such technique is the monitoring of radon gas in surface soils and rocks as a guide to subsurface uranium deposits. The Colorado School of Mines Research Institute became involved in radon studies in 1967 on a project for the AEC. Since that time the Institute has conducted numerous radon surveys for a large number of companies which have been active in uranium exploration. The objective of this paper is to relate the techniques utilized by the Research Institute and the results of some of the studies performed. Most of the studies performed by the Research Institute were related to roll front, sandstone -type uranium deposits. However, we have performed radon studies in various other types of rock. For those who may not be familiar with the application of radon ?sniffing" in soils and rocks, a brief descriptive background should be given. The following question may be asked -- why use radon as a guide to uranium mineralization? Some of the answers to this question are as follows:
