The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating unstable slopes along the Konkan railway in India without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw were developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3, irrespective of the actual free face, was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle was changed from 80–82 to 45–47 degrees, and possible wedge, planar and toppling failures were eliminated. No incident of rockfall and slope failure along these slopes has been observed after the stabilization.

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required placement of approximately 3,000,000m3 of fill over a P1an area of approximately 600,000m in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40m. Earthwork construction was completed in approximately six months using mine waste which was placed in 4 to 6m lifts using mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10m to enable development of a mat and additional resistance to possible differential settlements under dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 80 mil (2mm) HOPE liner was used below the leach pads and this was protected from the loading and unloading equipment using an engineered liner system consisting of screened sand, gravel and silt from local sources as the bedding and cover layers, and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low grade ore. Settlement monitoring, field testing and subsequent assessments of liner performance have indicated an adequate design was achieved and the project proceeded with considerable savings in time and construction costs.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Cold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 9 million tons of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 1.0 million tons per year. Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, mineable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). Using postulated models the roles of polymers, surfactants and other physical means as dewatering aid are discussed.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While there have been many studies aimed at understanding total dust concentrations and silica content associated with different mining conditions (e.g., locations/occupations within a mine, cutting methods, geologic strata), little research has been completed to more comprehensively characterize respirable dust (i.e., by distributions of particle composition, size or shape). For such analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) may represent a powerful tool. This article is a preliminary investigation of SEM-EDX to characterize respirable dust from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. Samples were collected from various locations in the study mine, and individual dust particles were identified and classified by mineral type. A continuous personal dust monitor was also used to estimate respirable dust concentrations during sampling. This data was compared to particle densities observed under the SEM. Dust is generally defined as small, solid particles with an effective diameter between 1 and 100 µm. In underground coal mines, dust is produced by a variety of activities such as coal and rock cutting, materials handling, haulage and from a variety of materials. While the coal itself is primarily made up of organic carbon, it is estimated that as much as 60 percent of coal mine dust consists of mineral matter, including clays, metal oxides and sulfides, carbonates, quartz, phosphates and heavy minerals (WHO, 1997). Mineral matter may be ingrained in the coal seam or associated with adjacent or interlying strata, and may also be contributed by specific activities such as rock dusting. When dust is generated or made airborne, suspended particles tend to settle slowly with gravitational forces, but can remain airborne for extended periods of time depending on environmental conditions such as air velocity (Courtney et al., 1986) and particle properties such as size (ISO, 1995; WHO, 1999). Thus, miners working underground are routinely subject to occupational dust exposures ? with highly variable characteristics between and even within mines.

Theory and practice are described for a new processing method capable of precise mineral separations based primarily on differences in particle specific gravities at specific gravity split points from 1.5 to 21.0 and beyond. Separations are analogous to those achieved using rotating heavy media, except that the effective specific gravity of the fluid is created magnetically using a relatively dilute, low-viscosity, water-based magnetic fluid. Results reported here for a large, laboratory flow-through separator include: 1) 99% grade with 97% recovery in single pass separation of a suite of heavy minerals from quartz at I0 kg/h, 14 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 2) 90% grade and recovery in single-pass separation of mixtures of sand-size, non-magnetic rutile (4.23 specific gravity) and zircon (4.72 specific gravity) at throughputs of 35 kg/h, 47 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 3) partition curves having Ep90-10 transition widths 5% or less of mineral specific gravities, and 4) essential confirmation of the theory.

The Iron Ore Industry has perhaps seen more varied and drastic changes in its approach to crushing and grinding in the last 5 years than any of the other mineral industries, Multimillion ton per year plants have become common place. Centralized control and computers have become an established benefit. Autogenous grinding along with a variety of rod and ball grinding flowsheets are in use. This morning I will discuss a few of the more important and new concepts in the control of these crushing and grinding circuits.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

The historic Getchell property is currently being mined from the Getchell Main Underground workings, a foot wall extension of the Getchell open pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is currently under development via two vertical shafts. Together, the two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 3,200 tpd mill/autoclave circuit, taking Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 200,000 ounces (Au) per annum, to over 400,000 ounces (Au) per annum by 1999.

The Wobbler Feeder is a comparatively new materials handling and separating device. It is essentially a materials separating or scalping machine, particularly adaptable to separation of oversize particles from mine-run ore and to the separation of oversize materials from overburden, where the removal of oversize materials is necessary, as is the case in conveyor stripping. In construction, the Wobbler Feeder is simply a set of transverse bars of manganese steel, or other wear-resisting alloy steel, each having an elliptical cross-section with the major axes of adjacent bars displaced by ninety degrees so when rotating in unison, the pre-determined space between the bars remains constant.

Coal has in general a wide range of density from minus 1.3 to plus 2.0 g/cm3 because of its variations in purity, rank, and porosity, etc. The coal density has great impact on froth flotation performance, but much less attention has been paid to particle density than particle size. Our previous research results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different density fractions (minus 1.3, 1.3-1.4, 1.4-1.5, 1.5-1.6, 1.6-1.8, 1.8-2.0, 2.2-2.2, and plus 2.2 g/cm3) of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm-inside-diameter column, and a 152-mm-inside-diameter column. It was found that nanobubble has the biggest impact on the flotation performance of 1.4-1.8 g/cm3 medium-density coal particles.

The State of Minnesota is interested in stimulating the development of clay resources and recently supported a two year project to collect data on geological, mineralogical, processing, economic and environmental aspects of such potential developments. This paper presents the .various process options adopted on the bulk samples collected from the Minnesota River Valley area which is a primary deposit and contains a major silica fraction. A standard test flowsheet involving degritting, dispersion, HGMS, and cycloning was developed and for some samples yielded an acceptable filler grade product. Secondary streams containing relatively high grade kaolin but of coarse size were also obtained. Improvement in particle size distribution and in physical properties related to paper product specifications (brightness, viscosity) were obtained by size reduction processes. Market and economic considerations for kaolin consumption in the upper Midwest are analyzed. Current markets for paper grade kaolin in Minnesota were briefly discussed.

Fine coal particles are difficult to separate effectively from liquids or other solids. Ultrasonic energy may be used to enhance the efficiency of the conventional fine-particle separation processes widely used in the coal and mineral industries. Flotation, settling and dewatering tests were conducted using several fine coal samples to study the effects of ultrasonic treatment on these processes. Process variables such as particle size, ultrasonic treatment time and solids concentration were investigated for their impacts on ultrasonic treatment effectiveness. The results obtained from this study showed that ultrasonic treatment is an effective approach for enhancing solid/solid separation in flotation and solid/liquid separation in sedimentation and dewatering of fine coal. SEM microphotographs demonstrate that ultrasonics cleaned particle surfaces, which is, in part, responsible for the observed improvement in fine coal separation processes.

The South-Central area of the Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, on the Pacific coast of southern Costa Rica, may have produced on the order of 30,000 kg (100,000 troy oz) of gold since prehistoric times. The Peninsula lies along an 800- to 900-km-long belt of late Mesozoic eugeosynclinal rock deposition, hydrothermal activity, and deformation (Campanian). The oldest rocks exposed in the area are basalt and tuffaceous mudstone of the Late Jurassic or Cretaceous Nicoya ophiolite complex. The Nicoya Complex is overlain by weakly lithified Pleistocene Older Sediments, predominantly conglomeratic sandstone and derived from erosion of the Nicoya Complex. Erosion reduced the Complex to a surface of high relief, so that the detrital source was in the area originally; the source retreated with subsidence. Stratigraphically, the Older Sediments are followed by surficial deposits of intermediate age, consolidated Younger Sediments reworked from Older Sediments, and unconsolidated Holocene surficial deposits reworked from Younger Sediments. The most prominent structures are a northeast-trending anticline and northeast and northwest fault sets. Some deformation was Cretaceous, but folding and much faulting occurred after deposition of the Older Sediments. Remnants of plainlike features and destructional terraces on the Older Sediments attest to stepwise downcutting of the terrain during successive stages of uplift. Near the end of this process, the present valley floors and coastal headlands developed. During a probable epeirogenic rise in sea level, Younger Sediments filled the valley bottoms and an aggradational coastal plain developed. Sea level dropped by stages and with some reversals to its present position; this caused stepwise incision of the valley fill, stepwise beveling of the coastal plain, and development of the present wave-cut platform. Spilitization around the time of the Campanian orogeny caused some parts of the Nicoya complex to be calcitized and others to be silicified. Gold, pyrite, and probably additional silica were introduced during subsequent hydrothermal activity. Native gold was eroded from Nicoya Complex lodes and reconcentrated through three generations of placer gold deposits. First, the gold was deposited as a detrital.

The deformation, failure, and filling characteristics of a caving roof in the initial and normal mining stages of a pitching oblique longwall mining area are analyzed using large-scale threedimensional physical-similitude experiments and numerical calculations to study the characteristics of roof fracture and migration in a steeply dipping seam. The results show that the roof fracture development has evident sequential and spatial characteristics. Among them, immediate roof breaking in different parts of the mining area shows difference in time and space. The failure sequence of the immediate roof in different areas changes with the mining; unique regional stability evolution characteristics are observed in the suspended immediate roof simultaneously, resulting in its significant regional stability on the goaf filling.
