Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor's pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications. Shafts are critical components of the mine ventilation systems and contribute significantly to the mine ventilation pressure. Estimation of shaft pressure losses is an important aspect of mine ventilation planning and shaft frictional pressure losses are extensively studies. Shock losses contributed by shaft buntons are estimated using the interference factor model developed half a century ago. This study aims to develop a better performing prediction model for shaft buntons using state of the art experiment and numerical data, and machine learning techniques. Results show that the present prediction model is performing poorly, and the prediction performance can be improved by incorporating additional predictor variables. The Artificial Neural Network standardized Machine Learning model developed in this study is able to predict the shaft bunton shock loss with high accuracy (R2 = 0.956).

The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

Monitoring devices have been installed at several mine sites to assess the potential for the development of acid rock drainage (ARD) in waste rock, spent ore and tailings material. In addition, instrumentation has been designed for monitoring changes in water quality in pit lakes. These devices monitor temperature, oxygen, water movement and water chemistry in the waste rock pile. This information can be used to evaluate the current and future ARD risks and the effectiveness of caps and covers. The information can also be used in the design of other reclamation strategies that limit ARD development. The instrumentation includes nested thermistors and oxygen sensing ports, neutron access tubes, heat dissipation units (HDUs) and lysimeters. Many of the monitoring devices can be linked to a data logger and telemetry systems, enabling monitoring data to be downloaded from the office.

The evolution of trapped geothermal heat in hot underground mine along with emission of toxic gases and dust during mine activity makes the mine environment unfavorable is hazardous to worker’s health. This imposes significant demand on cooling and ventilation systems. As a result, substantial costs are incurred while implementing environmental regulation processes to dissipate the heat and provide comfortable working conditions. Thus, as an alternative, the development of cost effective materials to act as efficient thermal insulators is on the rise. Thermal conductivity is an important property that is a direct measure of a material’s ability to facilitate/deter heat flow. In addition to their superior chemical resistance, adequate mechanical strength, abrasion and fire retardant as well as environmental benefits in comparison to existing building materials such as ordinary Portland cement, aluminosilicate based geopolymers are now gaining widespread interest as promising thermally insulating and sustainable materials. This paper begins with an overview of geopolymers, transitioning into a discussion of recent developments in the field of geopolymer development as a thermally insulating material broadly classified into: filled geopolymers and porous geopolymers resulting in structures with enhanced ability to impede heat flow.

The mining industry is an important economical factor in Vietnam. Mining is presently being conducted at about 60 locations and at over 1000 mines. Petroleum extraction and coal mining are the most important parts of industry though metals such as zinc, tin, chromites, iron are also extracted. Last year the sector produced 20 million tons of crude oil, 26 million tons of coal and 500,000 tons of apatite. In particular, Vietnam is one of the world?s largest producers of anthracite, and it is one of the top producers of ilmenite and zircon in the Asia-Pacific region. The government intends to increase the mining production on all levels, however, at present one can observe adverse impacts of the mining activities on the natural environment such as insufficient waste dump rehabilitation, occurrence of acid mine drainage, mining subsidence and emissions as well as lack of appropriate water treatment facilities. This paper describes the current mining situation, future perspectives, the major environmental challenges of the country and approaches to solve these problems. Particular emphasis will be given to the research project ?RAME ? Research Association on Mining and Environment in Vietnam?, a venture carried out by universities, research centres and industry. This project is worked out in collaboration with the national Vietnamese coal and industrial minerals company VINACOMIN.

The leaching of gold and silver by ammonium thiosulfate solutions in the presence of copper has been actively studied in recent years. Newmont Gold Company has successfully tested the ammonium thiosulfate for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of low grade refractory carbonaceous/sulfidic ores. In this paper, the chemistry of the copper catalyzed leaching process is reviewed. Factors affecting both the leaching reactions and the stability of the lixiviants are reviewed and discussed from a solution chemistry perspective.

Tunnel segmental lining design constitutes a significant iterative process where modeling and numerical analysis are factors in deciding the number of segments, their dimensions, gasket placements, as well as the locations of dowels and bolts. Consequently, these modifications lead to revisions in the final drawing details. However, the current tunnel engineering practices lack systematic solutions that effectively bridge the gap between the iterative design process and efficient visualization of completed drawings due to the time- consuming nature of redrawing. This paper presents a pioneering application of AI-driven solutions including using Autodesk's API, for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) Project. It showcases the automation of drawing design and the real-time visualization of modifications, thereby streamlining the drawing process.

The properties of a geologic mass may be considered from a resource or an engineering viewpoint. The primary engineering applications include ground control, excavation, bulk handling, and hydrology. This study will focus upon these areas in descending order. For an adequate geologic description, data is necessary on the following components: (1) the intact rock, (2) geologic structures, (3) contained fluids, and (4) existing pressures and temperatures, see Table 1. This information, combined with the engineering specifications, provides the basis for a formal geotechnical analysis as illustrated in Figure 1. For a structural analysis it is essential to establish the mechanical properties of the material composing the structure. This material, termed the "rock mass," consists mainly of the first two geologic components, the intact rock and geologic structures (Figure 1) Consideration of fluids will be subordinated to their role as chemical agents affecting the mechanical properties. The existence of pressures and temperatures generally lies beyond the scope of this study.

Studies investigating the evaluation errors in laboratory scale flotation tests for platinum-bearing Merensky Reef in the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, have constructed a quality control model to assure a 95% confidence in the attested data. Specialized knowledge of the mineralogy of the platinum-group elements (PGE), together with acquaintance of evaluation models, validate a systematic checking of the sub-processes of the testwork. These include determination of minimum mill feed sample size, assay head reference distribution, mass balance checks, and specialized sample preparation of flotation test products prior to analysis. A flow schematic of this quality control model is proposed, with an example of test data that produce an error in the metal balance of 0,2% after rejection of outlier data.

This paper reports the construction of an environmentally-friendly tunnel in sedimentary soft rock near a residential area. The main tunnel, which will be used as the Onmawashi-Koen (Park) Regulating Reservoir, is a large-scale tunnel with a cross sectional area of 254.0 m2 and a lengthof 577.3 m, excavated using such support as shotcrete, rockbolts and steel H-sections. Since the large main tunnel is excavated in sedimentary soft rock, it is necessary to keep the stability of the tunnel face and the crown and to prevent surface settlement. A top heading with a length of 50 m is therefore driven as a pilot tunnel to observe the ground behavior during excavation, and to obtain information on the geological conditions based on which type of support structure is determined with consideration given to the results of field measurements and numerical analyses.

During the past few years monitoring systems have been installed to measure the effects of environmental changes on the ground-water resource. The design of a monitoring system depends upon the designer's perception of how the environmental factors merge with his perception of the ground-water flow system. The validity and representativeness of measurements made during a monitoring program depend upon the validicy of the designer's perceptions and concepts. To optimize the design of a ground- water monitoring program the designer should make preliminary measurements to confirm his assumptions.

Zirconium and hafnium are the twin elements of the periodic table because they are always found together. They resemble each other so closely that hafnium was not discovered until 135 years after the discovery of zirconium. Zirconium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 and isolated 35 years later by Berzelius. Because hafnium's chemical properties are so close to those of zirconium, it was not discovered until 1923 when Coster and von Hevesy detected it using X-ray spectrographic analysis. These elements occur most commonly in nature as the mineral zircon (ZrSiO,) and less commonly as baddeleyite (ZrO,). They also are found as a variety of other silicates. Zircon was identified as a component in alluvial and beach sands in 1895, but it was not produced in any quantity until 20 years later. During World War I, it was produced as a coproduct of beach sand mining for titanium minerals just south of Jacksonville Beach, FL, and was patented as a refractory. It was not until the 1930s, when Zircon Rutile, Ltd., began mining at Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia, that zircon was first used as foundry sand. Later in the 1940s, NL Industries and Humphreys Gold Corp. began production of zircon sands from fossil beaches in northeast Florida. Baddeleyite first became available as a commercial product in 1916, but never in the quantity of zircon. Zircon holds a unique position as an industrial mineral because it is used for both its physical and chemical properties and as an ore of zirconium and hafnium metals. Australia is the major zircon producer followed by the Republic of South Africa and the United States. Zircon is also produced in India, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the former USSR, China, Thailand, and Brazil. The location of world zircon mines, baddeleyite mines, and undeveloped zircon ores are shown in [Fig. 1]. World production of zirconium mineral concentrates is shown in [Table 1].

Dutch State Mines [D.S.M] introduced the Heavy Medium Cyclone into the United States for cleaning fine coal about three decades ago. Since that time the general industry practice has been to deslime the raw coal at 28 Mesh (0. 59mm) size. The plus 28M material is fed to the Heavy Medium Cyclone for cleaning, and the 28M x 0 fraction is processed by other means (e. g. flotation or hydrocyclones). This approach recognized that 28M was the smallest size particle that could be easily rinsed on vibratory screens without excessive loss of magnetite, and without blinding of sieve bend and vibratory screen decks. Another reason for the 28M de-sliming was to avoid excessive contamination of the media with non-magnetic coal, shale, or clay fines. The most undesirable of these contaminants is the sub-micron size clay particles (2) that greatly increase the viscosity of the media and reduce the numerical maximum level that the media specific gravity can obtain due to the lower specific gravity of clay with respect to magnetite. The higher the fugitive clay content, the more severe the preceding problems become. During the last 30 years, many conventional Heavy Medium Cyclone Plants have been built throughout the world. In the United States, the initial cyclone plants were confined to the production of high quality metallurgical coal where lower gravities of separation were required than could be obtained from the conventional hydraulic or air separation processes. In recent years a large and ever-increasing number of preparation plants producing steam coal have started utilizing Heavy Medium Cyclone technology due to the environmental pressures being encountered to produce low sulphur coal. Due to the inherent characteristic of many coals of having a lower pyritic sulphur content at lower specific gravity fractions, many applications and markets are appearing for separating steam coals at much lower specific gravities than have been historically normal in the United States. Therefore. Heavy Medium Cyclones are being utilized to a much greater degree in this field, due to the flexibility of low separating gravity ability coupled with high efficiency when high percentage of near gravity material is present.

A physical model has been developed to simulate the flows and mixing of gases in the waste of a longwall retreat coalface. The model is used in conjunction with computational modelling, and the distributions of permeability and gas emission in the model waste follow those in computer simulations (Pokryszka et al 1996). The physical model represents at 1170th scale a 200 m long, 3 m high coalface with a waste extending up to 280 m to the face start line. The model is tilted to the same seam slopes as the real face, e.g. 22° ascensional ventilation along the face and 7" slope to the dip. The purpose is to investigate the flow of three components: ventilation seepage flow through the waste; methane; and nitrogen injected to quell spontaneous combustion. A heavier-than-air surrogate gas (SF,) is used in place of methane, and therefore the model is inverted so that gas layers form along the 'roof". The main forces driving the flows in the waste (pressure gradients due to ventilation and the density difference of gas layers) are kept in proportion by appropriate scaling of the permeability. Calibration and validation used data from a coalface at a mine in the Lorraine coalfield. The model is now in operational use.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.
