Solution flow in leach dumps and heaps or in columns of representative rock has been the subject of only limited studies. This is a regime involving unsaturated flow in semiconsolidated rock with a wide size distribution. Even the concepts of continuous flow systems are fairly recent, and have evolved from the search for better methods of operating industrial chemical reactors. (1-3) Waste rock consolidation and permeability play a key role in solution flow characteristics. Harris (4) suggested that bulk density variations in a leach dump could alter the particle-to-particle contact, and that large particle aggregates could act like single, large particles . In the limiting case where the bulk density approaches that of the undisturbed, consolidated rock, the entire waste unit would behave as a single particle. Roman (5) treated the phenomenon of bulk density and its effect on consolidation in terms of lixiviant flow paths or solution channeling in leach dumps. Like Harris, he assumed that no solution moved through particles or particle aggregates associated with zones of high bulk density. Solution flow paths are thus effectively separated by particle regimes, creating solution channels in the waste body. While some attempts have been made to describe solution flow in leach dumps and related systems by utilizing computer model approaches and laboratory- scale simulations (5,6), there have been no direct, large-scale observations of solution movement in channels or of the actual channel sizes and distributions within a waste body. This paper describes a series of experiments involving large-scale, controlled waste leaching tests, conducted over a period of several years, and aimed at providing some direct observation of the changes in waste consolidation and permeability, the size and distribution of solution channels, the movement of such channels with continued solution application, and other features relating to solution flow during the leaching of low-grade waste. These results are then combined with mineralogical information to explain observed leach behavior.

A new system for leaching many types of ores has recently been developed on a commercial basis by J and J Research and Development, Inc. of Hanover, New Mexico. This revolutionary new leaching system consists principally of three new leaching reactors; viz, (1) a large, air-agitates, column-like reactor for leaching crushed ores that is constructed in an underground environment and has the inherent ability to do a very efficient job of leaching, (2) a vat-like, air-agitated vessel for leaching an rinsing finely ground ores and , (3) an air-agitated copper precipitation column that is built underground and utilizes an inexpensive dense or heavy scrap iron as a copper precipitant. Each of these new reactors have been used in a large leaching plant near Hanover, New Mexico.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. At the request of the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the suitability of using tri-sets for protecting mine personnel in roof-fall prone areas. A steel-set arch provided by MSHA served as a basis for evaluating the performance of the tri- set. All tests and analyses were conducted according to the arch canopy test and design procedures developed by the Bureau. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of their experimental behavior. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri -sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that tri-sets may be considered for protection against roof falls, provided that the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and that the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

The thin film balance (TFB) technique was used to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses (H3 between two air bubbles in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and electrolyte (NaCl) solutions. The results were used to determine the magnitudes of the hydrophobic forces (K232) using the extended DLVO theory. The Km values determined from He measurement allowed us to predict disjoining pressure isotherms, which were found to be in excellent agreement with those obtained experimentally using a bike-wheel film holder. The rate of film thinning was measured at low SDS concentrations with varying amounts of electrolyte (NaCl) added. In general film thinning was controlled by the capillary pressure during the initial stages, while it was controlled by the surfaces forces during the later stages. At low NaCl concentrations, it was possible to predict the rate of film thinning using the Reynolds equation, provided that the driving force was corrected for the contributions from the hydrophobic force, which in turn were determined from the KZ32 values obtained from the He values measured experimentally. At high NaCl concentrations, where it was difficult to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses, the contributions from the hydrophobic forces were determined by fitting the film thinning data to the Reynolds equation. The K232 values obtained using both the equilibrium film thickness and the film thinning measurements showed that hydrophobic force deceased with increasing surfactant and salt concentrations. It was found that the hydrophobic force in foam films was very sensitive to the added electrolyte concentration.

Phosphate rock, which is a prime source of phosphate used in fertilizer manufacture in the United States, contains uranium. In general, the uranium content of the rock increases with the phosphate content and most high-grade phosphate deposits (>30% P2O5) contain 0.01- 0.02% U3 8. The large tonnages of rock being mined represent a significant potential source of uranium that lends itself to recovery as a by-product of the wet-process phosphate industry. For example, in 1953, the U. S. Geological Survey estimated that recoverable phosphate reserves in the U. S. totaled about 5 billion tons and contained 600,000 tons of uranium. I This estimate did not include any rock from North Carolina which has since been estimated at about 2 billion tons. For the most part, the known, economically mineable U. S. reserves - estimated at about 7 billion tons - are concentrated in a few areas: 43% in the western states of Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming; 28% in each of Florida and North Carolina and less than 1% in Tennessee. In the past, Florida has supplied about 80% of the total U. S. production, practically all of which is land pebble phosphate. All forecasts indicate increased production rates from North Carolina and the western states.

By combining statistical methods with specialized coal technology, novel and widely applicable procedures are developed which are useful for making important decisions based on coal seam structure. By analyzing such properties as ash in visual coal types of seam cross sections and by processing the ash data to 100 gram increments of coal ranging from the top to the bottom of the seam, intraseam comparisons between data populations of samples from a given seam and a reference seam can be made. Moreover, illustrations are presented for estimating the number of drill cores required to purchase a specified level of sampling accuracy together with procedures for determining the probability that different coal scan cross sections are not unlike and by inference are therefore comparable. Such comparisons can be valuable when making important, costly and long prevaling decisions involving coal exploration, mining, preparation and utilization.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of the total activity of radon daughters in the air of mines has become a routine procedure in order to control the radiation exposure in miners due to the inhalation of these radionuclides. Normally the measured concentration is given in terms of total potential L-energy of the short lived radon daughters. The unit most frequently used is 1 WL (working level), which is defined as the potential a-energy of 1.3.105 MeV per 1 of air. The a-dose to the respiratory tract is, however, not proportional to the inhaled potential a-energy. In addition, the degree of equilibrium between the daughter products in air and the fraction of daughter products not attached to aerosol particles (the unattached fraction) must be known. Theoretical calculations of the equilibrium between daughters and the unattached fraction have been presented by different authors (Jacobi, 1972; Porstendörfer et al, 1978). Such calculations must take into account the plateout of daughters on surfaces, the attachment of daughters to aerosols and removal of daughters by the ventilation. The situation in mines will however be very complex and no single model will cover all situations. In most cases the radon and radon daughter concentrations will be described by a combination of different models. Domanski (1979) used the experimental results of Breslin et al. (1969) from uranium mines to relate the equilibrium between the individual daughters to the equilibrium factor, F. Once the equilibrium factor is known, this seems to be a useful approach to assess the individual daughter concentrations. The concentrations of radon and daughter products may vary considerably during the day. Seasonal variations are also frequently found. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the magnitude of these variations and of the factors having the strongest influence upon the concentrations. The unattached fraction of radon daughters in uranium mines was investigated by George and Hinchliffe (1972) and Raghavayya and Jones (1974). Mercer (1975) later modified the results of Raghavayya and Jones. Both these investigations indicated that the aerosol particle concentrations was the main influencing factor upon the unattached fraction. In this paper we will summarize the main results of a study on the radiological characterics of nonuranium mines. We will also discuss the correlations between the unattached fraction of the potential a-energy and the unattached fraction of the individual daughters, and between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual daughter ratios. More detailed discussions of this study will be published elsewhere (Stranden and Berteig, 1981 and Stranden and Berteig 1981 a). MATERIAL AND METHODS During 4 two-weeks periods corresponding to the seasons in the Norwegian mine where the highest radon daughter concentrations occure, the parameters listed in table 1 were studied. RESULTS Correlation between equilibrium factor and individual daughter ratios. The mean value of the equilibrium factor in all Norwegian mines measured during the last ten years was 0.46 with a minimum of 0.08 and maximum of 0.93 (Stranden and Berteig, 1981). The correlations between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual radon daughter/radon ratios were studied and the results indicated high correlations. In table 2, these correlation formulae are listed together with the correlation coefficients. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

This paper discusses design and construction aspects of shaft construction through rock saturated with petroleum hydrocarbons (crude oil). During the subsurface exploration phase for design of the Hilltop Interceptor project in Cleveland, Ohio natural crude oil was encountered at depths between 6.1 and 61 m below ground surface. The oil-saturated Euclid sandstone contained up to 12,000 mg/kg total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), various volatile organics, and had flash points as low as 18.9°C. Interceptor hydraulic design required that construction of access and/or drop shafts penetrate the layer of petroleum hydrocarbon saturated rock. This led to the design of a special lining and some special handling procedures for the excavated material.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within groundwater aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contaminantion. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environ- mental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laboratory experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit. Dispersion attending the flow of fluids in a porous medium is also shown to be an important factor. The effect of dispersion can greatly reduce the benefits of having a displacing cation which is adsorbed selectively with respect to ammonium. Since dispersion increases almost linearly with fluid velocity, an optimum displacement rate may exist.

The potential application of flotation for the treatment and processing of a fine-particle coal stream was investigated for the Chaili Coal Washery of the Zaozhuang Coal Mine Administration, Shandong Province, China. A goal of the test work was to evaluate the application of the Microcel™ flotation column and compare its performance to conventional flotation. Small-scale flotation tests were performed in the laboratory and on-site with fine coal slurry samples from the plant thickener underflow, i.e., the washing plant's undersized reject material. Flotation tests were conducted on-site with a 7.6-cm diameter Microcel™ column and with small-scale conventional cells. Column flotation tests were performed to determine a recovery-grade relationship for the fine coal feed, which contained about 24% ash, and to obtain sufficient data to enable scale-up to a large diameter unit. A primary objective as to establish the maximum throughput capacity of a Microcel™ flotation column while operating to produce a clean coal product with ash content of 7.5-7.8%. Results of the test work indicate that this product quality could be achieved at feed rates of 15-19 tph to a 3-m diameter Microcel™ flotation column. Lower ash products, i.e., 5-7% ash, were obtained but at lower column throughput capacities. Comparative flotation tests, conducted with conventional flotation cells, indicated that a product ash of only 8% or greater was achieved in a single-stage test.

A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

Low-grade iron ore received from the West Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state in India was used to develop a beneficiation flow sheet to remove alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2 ) from the ore to get iron (Fe)-rich product for steel plants. Mineral characterization showed that the main mineral constituents present in the head sample are goethite, limonite, hematite, quartz, clay and gibbsite. The head sample contained about 49.2 percent Fe, 8.79 percent alumina and 12.01 percent silica. The received iron ore sample is amenable to upgradation through beneficiation to get pellet grade concentrate. The beneficiation process was established, involving crushing, screening, jigging, spiral separation, size reduction, desliming and magnetic separation. The process showed significant enrichment in Fe values to 63.5 percent Fe in concentrate, from 49.2 percent Fe. From the developed flow sheet, it is possible to obtain pellet grade fines with 63.5 percent Fe, 2.92 percent SiO2 and 2.61 percent Al2O3 with 50.6 percent weight recovery. The overall tailing loss is 49.4 percent with 34.3 percent Fe, 21.28 percent SiO2 and 14.64 percent Al2O3

Many of the common valuable minerals have a magnetic susceptibility which is sufficiently high to render them amenable to magnetic separation. In addition,, many minerals which form the unwanted constituents of an ore can be removed by magnetic means. Magnetic separation in general has suffered seriously from, the lack of a high intensity wet separator. It is only recently that such a separator has become available to the industry. Prior to this, high intensity magnetic separation has been limited to the use of the dry techniques. Since the introduction of the Jones Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator, extensive test work has been conducted to investigate possible applications. From the investigations conducted and the discussions that have taken place in the industry, it is apparent that the important mineral characteristic of magnetic susceptibility is not receiving the attention that it deserves. Applications for high intensity wet separation are being found in areas hitherto not considered.

The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. General Statement In Montana, as in most states, the requirements for water quality control are becoming more restrictive. What was once accepted practice is now obsolete. The planning and construction of water quality control facilities has taken on new importance. Past practices and new ideas must be examined to meet the challenge. By this paper we hope to encourage the exchange of ideas for the improvement of water quality control techniques. Both the mining industry and governmental agencies should benefit from such an exchange. The following is a summary of the work done and in progress by The Anaconda Company in Butte to provide an improved water quality related to production processes. We invite your comments. "INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

Primary autogenous grinding has been in general use for somewhat over 20 years. During this period there have been many highly successful plants built on this principle, while some others have had problems such as: 1. Not performing as predicted from test work. 2. Highly fluctuating tonnage rates. 3. Mechanical problems. 4. High liner wear. Many of the problems with commercial autogenous mills have resulted from improper sampling and testing of the ore during the development period. It is recognized that the fully autogenous mill is very sensitive to any changes in grindability which may occur in the feed to such a mill. The semi-autogenous mill is somewhat less sensitive, but large swings in grindability of the feed require adjustment of ball charge and this cannot be easily accomplished in a short period of time.
