Various seam conditions had been examined during longwall production at RAG German hard coal mines. Based on the field data a prediction method was developed considering separation planes as influencing factors for roof falls at the face. The characteristics, orientation, and density of separation are important factors on the occurrence of roof falls. In addition to geological influences, the performance parameters and geometry of support must be considered and optimized for the prediction and prevention of roof falls in a longwall face. Based on detailed macro- and microscopic investigations of e coal seams considering various ranks of carbonization, the origin and characteristics of separation planes are determined and a strata-specific influence on roof fall is interpreted. It was assessed that the coal face fracturing and displacement caused by the stress depend on the floor and roof strata conditions due to activation of the existing separation planes. Field studies are shown giving an idea of influences by advance rates of the longwall face, support delay and hydraulic pressure to the roof control in longwall faces in depth of more than 3000 ft. The analysis includes the application of specific software developed for longwall roof fall prediction as a result of a European research project. The software allows a laminar graphic display of roof fall probability, which is used for recognition of risk areas and risk management.

"Quartz Dust is a major health hazard in underground works, wherever the ground contains quartz and depending on the chosen method of excavation. A research project initiated by the Swiss Tunnelling Society and realized by the Swiss Federal Institut of Technology, Zurich, established a correlation between the potential of quartz dust generation during excavation and well known geotechnical characteristics – the Cerchar Abrasivity Index CAI and the Uniaxial Compressive Strength UCS - of ten typical Swiss rocks. The results are at the center of a new guideline by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects on the requirements for early project stages regarding ventilation and logistics in function of the quartz dust related risk of the expected ground type of the project. The approach presented could be applied worldwide, contributing to more effective health protection as well as to better cost stability in underground works. CONTEXT Respirable quartz dust (aerodynamic diameter of particles < 10 micron) is universally recognized as a major workplace health hazard. Chronic bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer can be caused by excessive exposure to quartz dust, as has been proved by many medical studies. Therefore, the legislations of many nations specify a maximum workplace concentration (Maximale Arbeitsplatzkonzentration MAK, Occupational Exposure Level OEL). In Switzerland, for example, the Threshold Limit Value TLV for respirable Quartz or Crystalline Silica imposed by the Federal Committee on Exposure Levels (Grenzwertkommission) is 0.15mg/m3 air. Some nations refrain from establishing a OEL because of the carcinogenic nature of quartz."

The paper describes the unique operating features of the Lebanon Concentrator Plant wherein both magnetic concentration and froth flotation are used. Chalcopyrite is selectively floated by the use of dual collectors, Aerofloats and secondary butyl xanthate. Both potassium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate (dual collectors) are dissolved and emulsified with pine oil for the flotation of the pyrite. Sketches describing the plant operations are presented and plant operating metallurgical results obtained are also given. The optimum production of minerals by the froth flotation process is normally achieved [ ] smooth operating conditions, The process, because of its many variables, becomes an art as well as a science. Therefore, any phase of the operation which will aid the operator in his control of the numerous variables will help produce a smoother operating plant, One of the most important variables which the operator deals with is the addition of reagents, These are usually costly items and should be used discretely with minimum amount of waste, The danger is that ,this emphasis may reduce the reagent amount to a point below that required, or, on the other hand an excessive amount is added, Both conditions usually yield poor results. The drea of the metallurgist is to provide the operator with the tools enabling him to produce a good mineralized froth at all times. Normally the operator has no control concerning the type of reagents which he must use. This has usually been worked out for him in the laboratory and by plant-scale tests. He does have limited authority to control the amounts of the reagents at his disposal. This, I believe, is as it should be. However, the operator should be provided with the best combination of reagents for his particular job. The providing of this combination of reagents for his particular job, The providing of this combination is often difficult, yet it is very important in order to yield good results, With this in mind, the dual collector idea was introduced for the selective flotation of chalcopyrite, and also later for the flotation of pyrite at the Concentrator Plant of the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Supplying several types of collectors has given the operator an additional effective tool, even though great variations are encountered in ore tonnage treated and in ore composition, This paper deals with the use of the dual collectors and with the addition of the reagents in the form of a pine oil emulsion, or more accurately, a pine oil suspension. It is hoped that other operators may find the ideas helpful. There does not seem, to me, to be definite scientific fact which would substantiate the necessity for the use of dual collectors. However, in actual operations, the metallurgical results at Lebanon became more uniform with the use of dual collectors, I look upon it as an "insurance policy" which greatly aids the operator during those periods when he is having trouble, One theory has been advanced, i.e. one collector has a greater tendency to float the coarser minerals, whereas the other one may float the finer ones. Consequently, a combination of the two collectors will result in optimum recoveries, There has been some evidence that this is true, but it is not conclusive, on the other hand, the use of a xanthate-pine oil suspension (or emulsion) should speed up the surface reaction of the collector with the sulfide minerals, result¬ing in more uniform flotation, This has definitely happened in our particular case. A more interesting unexplainable observation has also occurred; i.e., the xanthate solution does not appear to lose its strength as rapidly when it is in the form of an emulsion (or suspension), This was first observed when a 50 gallon drum of a 20% ethyl xanthate solution was taken to Wilmington, Delaware, for a laboratory test, using a homogenizer to produce the xanthate-pine oil emulsion. Upon arrival, the drum of xanthate had developed a considerable internal pressure, The relief of this pressure was accompanied by a strong odor, When the emulsion was returned to Lebanon for the plant test orders were issued to release the pressure prior to emptying the emulsion. Nopressure had developed within the drum and there was no unusual odor present, Since this time it has been observed that xanthate pine oil suspensions have greatly decreased the possible decomposition of the xanthate solutions. In fact, suspensions have been exposed for more than a month without apparently effecting their reactions in the flotation plant. On the other hand, we found that the regularly mixed concentrated xanthate solutions, after standing for several days, did not give the same results as the freshly made ones. This effect was greatly reduced by the use of xanthate pine oil suspension (or emulsion)

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states&apos; economies continue to grow, Utah&apos;s industrial minerals industry should thrive.

A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly-mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala Aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil, Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after 21 months of operation. Water quality in 15 specially-drilled monitoring wells has returned to the original quality level of the aquifer, and chloride concen¬trations in the pumping well have dropped to half the maximum level recorded thus far. Project results are very favorable and provide guidelines for initiation of similar undertakings in localities where needed.

"Mining plays a key role in the development of modern civilization as a source of essential raw materials and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer now than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly.A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production.An attempt to bring light and clarity to the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers, through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the all-in sustaining cost (AISC) and all-in cost (AIC).Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact, the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted in past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $61/g ($1,900/oz) in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow/income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits.The disconnect led to a need for more accurate cost reporting in order to win back investor confidence and provide better understanding of gold mining economics. In 2012, the senior gold mining companies, including Gold Fields, Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Mining Corp., worked with the WGC to develop a new measure. This resulted in the June 2013 publication of the new framework AISC and AIC, which has been widely embraced by the sector since Jan. 1, 2014 (WGC, 2013).The adoption of the new cost template would have the dilemma of showing the real profitability of gold mine properties, which might alleviate taxes from governments and legislators, but it might also scare off investors toward more lucrative industries if not winning back their confidence."

Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. The National Italian Regulation concerning environment protection imposes that industrial areas are provided with systems aimed at preventing the circulation of contaminated groundwater. These systems can be static or dynamic and operate basically by intercepting the contaminated flow. Their effectiveness, realization time and costs depend on the intervention type and on the features of the specific site. The selection of the best solution is complex and the results obtained by this selection may be affected by residual risks related to the uncertainty of the hydrogeological and geotechnical characterization of the site. With regard to the industrial area of Portovesme, located in the south of Sardinia, the paper presents the analysis of alternative interventions aimed at the protection of the groundwater. The attention is focused on the evaluation of their effectiveness, impact on environment and, finally, time and costs of construction.

Restoration of abandoned mine sites is still one of the weak points of mining practice. The latter stands especially for the case of the surface coal and lignite exploitations, where the extended size of the disturbed land and the drastic changes to the geomorphologic features do not facilitate the implementation of a cost effective and environmentally sound reclamation plan. The paper examines the parameters involved towards the legal requirements for the reclamation of the first lignite exploitation in Greece, namely the ?Plakes? mine, located at Euboea, due to the particularities of the site. Then an integrated redesign procedure is presented, aiming at minimizing aesthetic degradation, confronting technical difficulties and preparing the site to accept new uses.

Accurate prediction of recoverable reserves are key to the development and planning of a mining operation. Recovery functions for tonnage, quantity of metal and ore grade are defined and two approaches for their estimation are proposed. The indicator kriging (IK) approach draws on the data rank orders, whereas the multi-gaussian (MG) approach relies on a grade multi-variate distribution hypothesis. Although based on different premises, both approaches yield remarkably similar--and accurate--estimates for recoverable reserves.

Kennecott&apos;s Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800&apos;s. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott&apos;s concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

Salt domes, their cap rocks, and the adjacent sedimentary strata represent a major economic resource in the Gulf of Mexico basin. Gulf Coast salt diapirs formed in response to sediment loading of the "mother" Louann evaporite sequence of middle Jurassic age, an effect that is caused by the buoyant nature of the lower density salt. Halokinesis progresses from nonpenetrative deformation that creates broad "pillow" structures into discrete high-amplitude diapirs. Because of its buoyancy, the top of the salt diapir remains near the land surface or the seafloor during much of its history as the basin floor subsides. The salt within the Gulf Coast diapirs is deformed complexly and commonly shows subvertical banding that represents modified sedimentary layers with different contents of nonhalite components. The most abundant impurity is anhydrite, which occurs as individual millimeter-scale crystals or as deformed clasts that generally form about 5% of most salt stocks. Many mature salt diapirs are mantled by a "cap rock" that consists of a lower anhydrite zone and an upper calcite zone, commonly separated by a discontinuous gypsum-bearing zone. The anhydrite zone forms as accreted layers of anhydrite grains and clasts that are left after episodes of halite dissolution. The calcite zone is a product related to petroleum destruction accompanying bacterial reduction of aqueous sulfate. Calcite-cemented siliciclastic strata occur above or alongside diapirs. The mineral resources of the salt-dome setting are remarkably diverse. Major economic products of the salt-dome environment are salt and cap-rock-hosted native-sulfur deposits, as well as petroleum resources that occur on the dome flanks and in the cap rock. Native sulfur forms as a result of bacterial sulfate reduction accompanying petroleum destruction to form hydrogen sulfide, which is subsequently oxidized to elemental sulfur, major amounts of which have been produced by the Frasch process from Gulf Coast salt-dome cap rocks. Some cap rocks have produced limestone, gypsum, and anhydrite for a variety of construction uses. Although traditional industrial-mineral resource production from Gulf Coast salt domes is shrinking, some cap rocks host potentially commercial concentrations of celestite and barite, as well as the metals Zn, Pb, and Ag. Furthermore, caverns, excavated within the salt stocks, serve as major storage facilities for crude oil (including the Strategic Petroleum Reserve), liquefied petroleum gas, and natural gas. These resources are products of fundamental geologic processes that are integral to the evolution of the Gulf of Mexico basin. Whereas production of some industrial-mineral resources, such as elemental sulfur, has declined in recent years, ample reserves of salt will allow production to continue into the foreseeable future. Further, there is potential for other mineral-resource production from cap rocks under favorable economic circumstances. Expanded use of caverns, excavated in the salt masses for material storage and disposal, is likely to continue into the next century.

Gold is sufficiently valuable that concentrations as small as 1 p.p.m. may support low-cost mining. Mindful of this, Sunoco Energy Development Company (Sunedco) obtained fire-assay analyses on some sulfide-rich sandstone encountered during routine drilling. Initial fire-assay values from independent laboratories indicated some significant gold values and independent analysis by atomic-absorption spectroscopy also indicated detectable gold at economically interesting concentrations. Sunoco geologists realized the potential for spurious results inherent in both fire assaying and atomic-absorption spectroscopy. Fire assaying that relies on gold measurement by weight requires perfect separation of gold from all other elements, Imperfect separation may artificially enhance apparent gold concentrations. Atomic-absorption-spectroscopy (AAS) measurements are potentially subject to interferences from other elements. For example, Beamish and Van Loon (1977, p.4) report AAS measurements of 4 p.p.m. Au to be characteristic of completely barren soil samples when samples are prepared by standard dissolution in HC1 to form solutions of about 10,000 p.p.m. total cations (mostly Na, Ca, Mg, Al, and Fe) .

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended $24 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale, some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than 1. m (3 ft) in width to pipes with a surface area of 128 ha (316 acres). The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments. Diamond content ranges from trace to economic concentrations. The exploration discoveries were facilitated by early recognition that the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the diatremes varied from the classical kimberlites of Kimberley, South Africa, to unusual more highly fractionated, alkaline, silicic varieties having affinities with leucitelamproite. Indirect methods of exploration were used, primary reconnaissance work being stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Evaluation showed Ellendale diamonds are 90% gem and near gem, but the low grades and tonnage render the deposits unpayable at today&apos;s diamond prices. After discovery in late 1979 and completion of a feasibility study by the end of 1982, evaluation studies proved Argyle to be economic. Alluvial diamond mining commenced in 1983 producing 6.2 million carats (Mct) that year, 60% being of industrial quality. Open-pit mining of the AK1 lamproite should start in 1985/1986 at a rate of 3 million t/a (33 million stpy) and produce 25 Mct/a, making this mine, and Australia, the world&apos;s largest producer of diamonds by weight. The revenue from diamond deposits is a function of the grade and the value of the diamonds. The grade is the product of the frequency of occurrence of the diamonds (stone density) and the mean stone size; the value of the stones is strongly related to their size distribution. During evaluation of the West Australian deposits, the diamond distribution was found to vary markedly in stone density and stone size. These variations corresponded with changes in the rock type hosting the mineralization. As a consequence, geological mapping of individual lamproites within the multiple vents and careful monitoring of the diamond distribution became an important part of the evaluation work. Similar variations in stone size and frequency were found to accord with separate alluvial terraces and fan gravels derived by erosion from the Argyle AM lamproite.

Progress in computer control of flotation circuits has developed parallel with advances in reliability of on-stream X-ray analysis (Cooper, 1976). Attainment of acceptable results with X-ray fluorescence analysis over the past ten years has led to application of computer control in more than 30 concentrators. Gains in applying flotation control also have given incentive to improving measurement and control devices for other essential functions in control systems. At the same time, advancing technology has made available computer systems having characteristics practical and economical for the physical environments of concentrators and ore processing plants. Benefits from flotation control have centered on increased efficiency in mineral separations, derived by stabilizing circuit operation subject to changing ore characteristics. The gains have been most evident in processing complex ores for multiple concentrate products. In many cases, particularly when coupled with grinding control, the economic results from on-line control have been substantial compared to investments in monitoring and control equipment.

In order to rapidly evaluate an area for its mineral potential, a reconnaissance exploration program generally includes the following: 1. Outlining an area of interest 2. Identifying known mineral deposits 3. Bibliographic search of the literature 4. Evaluation of geochemical and geophysical surveys 5. Compilation and review of geologic maps The information now available from various government agencies regarding the mineral deposits, geology, and geochemistry may be integrated and used as a tool to rapidly evaluate an area before the field season. The databases most commonly used in the United States are the USBM MAS/HILS system and the USGS MRDS system for their information on mineral deposits; GEOREF and GEOARCHIVE for bibliographic information; and NURE data for the geochemistry and geophysics. In conjunction with the project geologist, this information may be used to plot known deposits and their geochemical signature as well as any other areas of like signature for further examination.

In the real world of coal mining, the bottom line for almost every support project decision is economic (i.e., what is it going to cost?). Up to this point, I have discussed the methods to improve the performance of typical support projects by better installation, materials, and techniques, thus lowering the impact of the bottom line cost. In this chapter, 1 shall explore what costs are relevant in mining construction, and how these costs are developed. The chapter centers around two major discussions: (I) developing cost accounting techniques, and (2) cost-estimating procedures for support construction. Each focuses on the fundamentals of practical cost considerations necessary for decisions on construction projects underground. Since cost accounting, economics, and investment planning are all subjects which warrant complete discussions on their own, this chapter will focus on distilling the important concepts required by a planning engineer into an easily understandable presentation.

In the first place, let me thank you for inviting me to appear before you today to speak to you on "Mineral Industry Problems - Present and Future". It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry&apos;s problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.
