Laboratory tests were conducted in a full-scale continuous miner test gallery to evaluate resulting dust levels for changes in face airflow, spray water quantity and pressure, and mining height. The minimum and maximum values tested for each parameter were as follows: airflows between 1.42 and 6.14 m3/sec, water flows between 56.8 and 132.5 lpm, nozzles pressures between 413 and 1379 kPa, and mining heights between 1.52 and 2.74 m. Each of these parameters were evaluated for four common spray system designs. Respirable dust samples were collected in the operator's cab on the miner and in the immediate return. Second-order polynomial models were used to represent expected dust levels and multiple stepwise regression was used to identify significant control parameters for inclusion in the models. Separate models were developed for dust levels at the operator and return locations and for each individual spray system. Interaction between control parameters and curvature effects were found in most models. The analysis indicated that at the operator location, airflow and mining height had the most significant impact on respirable dust levels. In the return, airflow and water pressure were typically the most significant parameters. The models developed for each spray system design can be used by mine operators to guide application of control parameters for a variety of operating conditions and mining heights.

I read the paper “The jackknife approach” with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be stationary.

Hypersonic tunnel boring (HTB) uses directed, high velocity projectile impacts to remove rock. HTB is highly independent of rock strength and targets hard, abrasive rock and variable rock environments. This paper discusses history, theory and presents test (2×2 m and .75×.5 m tunnels) field trial results and technical and economic evaluation. The HTB tests are compared against the historic ‘project REAM’ and the concept against tunnel boring machines and drill & blast in design studies for full-scale 12 m and 4.5×5.5 m tunnels. The positive results indicate that under these conditions HTB can replace Drill & Blast and Tunnel Boring Machines.

This paper describes a wind tunnel modelling study on airflow and pollutant concentration in a large open pit mine located in southern China. A 1:1000 scale model of the surface mine was fabricated and placed in a wind tunnel. Airflow velocity in the test section of the wind tunnel can be continuously adjusted from 0.3 m/s to 6.0 m/s. In this study, both the present pit condition and the projected final pit condition were modelled. Airflow direction and velocity profiles were obtained. The impact of wind direction and velocity on airflow was also studied. The pollutant concentration distribution in the open pit was simulated using smoke, and a distribution profile was obtained. Respirable dust concentrations at the mine site were measured, then its concentrations at the projected final pit condition were estimated using the obtained pollutant concentration distribution profile. Under normal meteorological conditions, it is expected that the respirable dust concentration for the final pit should not exceed the government standard. "According to research presently being conducted on selective lithium recovery in seawater, inorganic adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity for capturing lithium ions from liquid lithium resources are called lithium ion-sieves (LISs). Their low toxicity, low cost and high chemical stability make LISs suitable for lithium recovery from seawater. In the present study, the ultrathin LMO nanofibers with controlled diameter were successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique with a hypothesis that greater aspect ratio (i.e., smaller diameter) would lead to the enhanced recovery of lithium ion from seawater. Design of Experiment (DOE) and dimensionless analysis were performed to systematically optimize the diameter and morphology of nanofibers. Several complementary techniques including FE-SEM and XRD were used to evaluate the physical/physicochemical properties of the nanofibers. Lastly, the lithium ion recovery was tested for the nanofibers with different physical properties using lithium ion solution. INTRODUCTION Demand for lithium resources is increasing in many industries across the world.1-2 However, the conventional resources for lithium is very limited, and it even gets worse to secure the resources due to low grade and/or complexity of feed materials. Much effort has been, therefore, devoted to obtaining lithium from aqueous lithium resources. Several methods such as solar evaporation3-4, co-precipitation5, and solvent extraction6 have been proposed for recovering lithium from an aqueous lithium source, but there are limitations on its use; It takes a very long time or conditions such as temperature, pH and Mg/Li ratio are severe. Lithium ion-sieve (LIS) materials are considered as a good lithium adsorbent because of their unique chemical structure that can selectively separate lithium ion from brine and seawater.7- 10 Furthermore, their low toxicity, low cost, and high chemical stability make LIS suitable for lithium recovery from aqueous lithium resources. Spinel hydrous manganese oxide (HMn2O4) derived from spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) after topotactically extracting lithium from the spinel structure by acid treatment is most widely investigated LIS.10, LIS materials have been actively studied in various forms for easy handling and high efficiency (i.e. membrane11,12, foam13-14, granular15,16). Among them, the 1-D nanostructure LIS with high specific surface area is excellent in efficiency.9 In this study, we present the part of our recently submitted work17. Specifically, we fabricated systemically lithium manganese oxide nanofibers with different diameter as a lithium ion adsorbent using electrospinning technique through design of experiment (DOE). Enhanced lithium ion adsorption properties of the HMn2O4 nanofibers with different diameter were investigated in lithium liquid resources."

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

"INTRODUCTION Sorting technology has advanced rapidly recently. Of the two possibilities particle sorting has advanced especially in introducing new sensors and the use of multiple sensors. The analyzing and computing lead times have also shortened. This has made it a viable technology option for many applications but not for the most important sorting task at a mine; the run-of mine ore. Bulk sorting, however, has advanced in smaller steps, even if the technology has the capability to tackle the run-of-mine ore and offers a high potential to bring mines substantial economic benefits. The sensors, which are useful are restricted by the difficult operating conditions or by the ore characteristics. One of the important features of run-of-mine sorting technology is the major material handling infrastructure required. The capital expenditure can be substantial requiring good understanding of the sortability curve (grade-recovery curve) behavior of the ore. This paper discusses one industrial case, where substantial amount of data measured from the ore feed belt has been obtained. This data was then analyzed for the grade recovery curves obtainable from that ore with sorting. EXPERIMENTAL The XRF measurement used was the FCA device from IMA Engineering (Fig.1). It is a specially built version of XRF designed to operate with coarse material. The measurement was situated at the main belt conveyor taking ore from the primary crusher to the stockpile. The crushed ore was about 80% -300 mm at a capacity of 1100-1200 tph (Fig.2). Measurement times were varied from 30 seconds to a minute. Measurements were obtained over several months.As the XRF is a surface distribution measuring technique, the measurement was first tested upon accuracy and reproducibility against plant daily wet chemical assays and against on-line Courier feed analysis. As there is a varying delay in the ore stockpile, the delay time was used as a variant in the validation. Different measurement times were tested for accuracy. A one minute measurement time gave a total measurement relative standard error, which was both for Cu and Ni below 3%. The results showed also very robust correlations; for Cu, the correlation coefficient was R > 0,94 for one minute measurements over three months and R > 0,86 for Ni respectively. Fig 3. Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

The Berkeley Pit of The Anaconda Company is located on the southeast slope of the Butte Hill, the legendary "Richest Hill on Earth," and is one of the largest pit operations in the world completely dependent on truck haulage. Through October 31, 1968, the Berkeley stripping and mining operations have moved more than 442,589,000 tons of material. Present scheduled production is at the rate of 260,000 tons per day, with a record quantity of 306,900 tons having been hauled on September 23, 1968. Although the Berkeley Pit has been in production only a little more than ten years, it has been the proving ground for many of the presently used large trucks. Beginning with the original R. G. LeTourneau 75-ton electric truck in 1960, Unit Rig 85- and 100-ton electric drives, Haulpak 65- and 105-ton electric drives, and Caterpillar 100-ton electric drives have all been tested under production conditions. In addition, engine development has kept pace with both 1000-hp diesel and 1100-hp gas turbine engines now under test. As the size of the Berkeley operation has grown, the truck fleet has changed in size and appearance in order to maintain economic mining costs. The original fleet consisted of forty-three 36-ton trucks with conventional mechanical drives. The present fleet is made up of eighty-nine trucks: nineteen 85-ton Unit Rig electrics with 700-hp diesel engines; sixty-nine 100-ton Unit Rig electrics with either 700- or 1000-hp diesel engines; and one 100-ton Unit Rig electric with an 1100-hp gas turbine engine.

In the present study, the use of horse residue as an alternative reducing agent in the roasting of a low-grade goethite ore containing 17.60% Fe was investigated. Additional roasting experiments were carried out with corn starch and without reducing agent for comparison. Each roasted product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic hysteresis (MH) loops analyses. The optimum roasting conditions (roasting temperature [400, 500, and 600 °C], reducing agent/ore ratio [0.04, 0.08, and 0.12], and roasting time [10, 20, and 30 min]) were investigated based on the Taguchi approach. The magnetic susceptibilities of the roasted sample with the addition of reducing agents were higher compared to that of the roasted sample in the absence of reducing agent. Experimental findings indicate that the horse residue can be used as the reducing agent. Finally, an iron ore concentrate assaying a Fe grade of 62.12% with a recovery of 56.93% was prepared using wet magnetic separation at a magnetic intensity of 0.5 T from the ore roasted under the following roasting conditions: roasting temperature of 500 °C, reducing agent/ sample ratio of 0.08, and roasting time of 30 min.

Considerable amounts of the world's known reserves of elemental sulfur are found near the surface in areas of volcanic activity both active and inactive. Because such deposits cannot in general-be mined by the well-known Frasch process, and because other methods of recovery have not proven to be economically competitive except in isolated instances, at present these reserves remain relatively undeveloped. However, projections of world sulfur demand indicate that new sources of marketable sulfur will be needed in future years 2/, 19/. For this reason, recovery of elemental sulfur from these near-surface deposits is of continuing interest. Solvent extraction as an approach to recovery of elemental sulfur from open pit-mined ores of these non-Frasch deposits has received considerable attention particularly at the research and development level 3 /, 7/, l l /, 16/, 21/,23/, 29/ This method has been and continues to be attractive because it presents the potential of high sulfur recovery and purity of product coupled with a relatively simple process flowsheet in which low energy requirements and reasonable operating costs are thought to be possible. However, the physical and chemical characteristics of the native-sulfur ores, of elemental sulfur, and of the known solvents, have presented difficulties in the development of solvent extraction processes. Up to the present time, viable processes have not been realized within the framework of sulfur marketing conditions.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

INTRODUCTION Coal is geologically a sedimentary rock with distinct bedding planes containing a mixture of petrographic constituents. Yet. because of its chemical nature, it also has some of the characteristics of a polymeric material. In addition, it is extensively precracked to give a macropore structure and also has a substantial internal volume of microporosity. Add to this the mineral constituents dispersed in the coal in a variety of forms and sizes. and it can be readily appreciated that coal is a complex and heterogeneous material. It has to date not been possible to predict the particle size distributions produced by breakage of coals from a priori application of the principles of fracture mechanics. However, there is a substantial body of data resulting from empirical observation of size distributions produced under various conditions, primarily from grinding mills. It is the function of this review to outline how this empirical information can be used to predict product size distributions for those systems which have been studied systematically, and to suggest future avenues of research using similar methodology. FRACTURE THEORY APPLIED TO COAL It is, of course, possible to devise experiments for slow crack propagation in a coal. However, the evidence is that coal breaks by brittle fracture in the mills and mining machines of industrial importance and therefore the theory of brittle fracture is sufficient to illustrate the important features of the fracture of coal. In order to produce size reduction a solid must be stressed by the application of force. The force can be a tensile (stretching), compressive, or shear force, and the three dimensional stress pattern in the solid represents the tensile, compressive, and shear forces per unit area acting in any direction through any point in the solid. As an illustration consider the case of a simple one-dimensional tensile stress: then stress is defined as a=F/A where F is the force. A is the cross-sectional area of the solid normal to F and strain. E, is defined as the fractional change in the length of the solid. so that E= x/L where x is the extension of an original length of L. Coal behaves as an elastic material over short times (although viscoelastic creep can occur if the stress is maintained over long times) and if it is not stretched too far the coal returns to its original shape when the stress is removed; otherwise catastrophic failure occurs and the coal fractures at a stress termed the tensile strength. The failure under stress of an elastic material is termed brittle fracture. Elastic material fails at small stain and the stress-stain relation to where brittle fracture occurs is the empirical Hooke's law. a= YE, where Y is Young's modulus. The work done on the solid to take the solid from zero external stress to a stressed state by slowly increasing F up to a final stress u is the integral of the stress times the strain. This reversible strain energy is stored in the solid and. using Hooke's law. is u /2Y per unit volume of solid. If the solid is immediately loaded to u the work done is [EAuL] which Is a2 /Y per unit volume, that is, twice the reversible work.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high loss-of-ignition (LOI)fly ash. Using froth flotation to achieve selective separations requires long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash — low LOI ash and a high-carbon product suit-able for reburning or further upgrading.

It is not possible to accurately predict water flow into rock tunnels during construction, because all of the relevant factors cannot be accurately determined ahead of time. But an estimate is needed, because water inflow can be a major problem during construction, hence also a major concern for project design. There currently is no simple, generally accepted method of estimating inflow. This paper describes a semi-empirical method for estimating possible water inflow based on borehole water pressure test results, using correlations from previous tunnel experience. The method provides an estimate of percentages of tunnel length which will experience different intensities of long term steady state inflow, and provides an estimate of possible initial heading inflow. The method is applicable for distributed sources of water inflow due to rock mass features such as systems of joints and bedding planes, and accounts for different boundary conditions of water head and recharge. The metric system flow units used in this paper are liters per minute (L/min) and liters/minute/meter of tunnel (L/min/m), to be compatible with rock mass classification systems commonly used today.

Hydrogeological impacts of active longwall mining were studied at two sites in Illinois. At the site with the more transmissive sandstone aquifer, aquifer permeabilities increased an order of magnitude due to subsidence. Piezometric levels declined with subsidence due to increased porosity, and ahead of mining due to a transmitted drawdown. Levels recovered rapidly at first and fully over two years. At the site with the less transmissive aquifer, impacts were similar except that recovery has been limited. Local aquifer enhancement through increased yield can occur, but only where the aquifer is transmissive enough for recovery.

Uranium is an element incompatible with respect to the major rock-forming minerals crystallizing from granitic magma, entering in- stead trace minerals such as zircon. The relationship between the saturation limit (SL) for such a mineral and the bulk distribution coefficient (Do) for U is central to understanding the distribution of U and its availability to late- stage fluids which can form ore deposits directly, or labile U which can be remobilized later. Low SL values imply early crystallization of zircon, but in very small proportions, minimizing Do and maximizing the degree of enrichment of U in late-stage fluids. Thus, granitic rocks with low Zr contents (due to a low saturation limit for zircon) are most likely to evolve U- enriched differentiates; this will be reflected in a high U content of the zircons (but not necessarily high U abundances in whole-rocks). Thus, the ratio of the U content of zircon to the Zr content of the corresponding whole-rock is potentially a very useful parameter in identifying granitic rocks which are most likely to have U-enriched solutions associated with them. The granitic rocks associated with the U deposits of the Midnite Mine area, Washington, have geochemical characteristics which fit very well the model presented here. The rocks are very low in Zr (100 ppm) and contain zircons with extremely high U contents (3,000-4,000 ppm).

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

Because men, materials, and supplies are being moved more often and farther by rail, the ef¬ficient and safe construction of the system takes on new importance. Most large coal mines are opting to use track haulage over other support transportation systems because of cost, ease of installation, reliability, and other factors. En¬gineers tackling the problem of designing such a transportation network must be aware of all the steps required for an effective transportation system design. This chapter discusses all aspects of efficient trackwork construction. The areas covered in¬clude design factors, laying the track, installing turnouts and switches, and installing trolley wire. Each area includes a description of the steps needed to complete the work.
