In reasonably dry rock, long-wave radar can theoretically explore to distances approaching 75 meters (250 ft). High-resolution radar reflections have already been demonstrated through 13 m of hard limestone, through 9 to 18 m of coal in place and through 225 m of rock salt, using only low-power experimental radar equipment. Radar reflections have been received through the rock from rough pillar walls, from faults, and from a slim, uncased, vertical drill hole. In three years of intermittent experimentation, the feasibility of rapid radar exploration of large volumes of rock, with portable equipment, in deep, wet workings has been demonstrated. With future, improved equipment the theoretical working range, of the order of 75m, is expected to be attained in most hard rocks. THE TECHNIQUE Fig. 1 illustrates an early "monocycle" radar system (1) set up in a coal mine. This radar equipment is entirely different from that employed for detecting distant objects through the atmosphere. However, the basic principle is the same: a pulse of electromagnetic energy is radiated by the transmitter, a portion is reflected by some "target" object embedded in the surrounding medium and some of this energy is collected by the receiving antenna. In the receiver, the pulse is amplified, is "stretched out in time" by a sampling process, and is displayed on the screen of a cathode-ray oscilloscope. The CP-3A contract is the final segment of the MWWST’s 28.3 km (17.6 mile)pressurized water supply tunnel for the metropolitan Boston area. The 1,288 m (4,226 feet) of U-shaped tunnel alignment passed through five rock zones employing four different primary support systems. The short tunnel began in Weston, Massachusetts, at Shaft 5A in soft, completely weathered argillite, passed through a fault zone, and ended in Dedham granite. An 18-foot diameter horseshoe starter tunnel was built to accommodate a 4.94 m (16-foot 2 1 / 2 inch) diameter Robbins TBM. Heavy water inflows were anticipated and subsequently encountered during probe drilling. Pre-excavation grouting was implemented at high pressures to displace high water inflows in the starter tunnel and consolidate the fault zone. This paper will provide an overview of the tunnel construction with an emphasis on ground control, grouting and survey control.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines. Completion of a railroad to the high Tibetan Plateau in Central China has now made it economical to exploit its mineral reserves. Lead and zinc mines are now being established. A potash plant to produce 40,000 tons per year KC1 is now in operation. Plans to produce 200,000 tons per year by 1987 are being implemented. Pilot drilling for oil and natural gas have proved up reserves. Slaughter houses are being constructed to ship yak, mutton and beef from the endless grasslands on the plateau. Research Centers in Xining and Golmud have been completed for the sole purpose of increasing technology and exploitation of the Tsaidam Basin and surrounding area.

The Hutti greenstone belt comprising predominantly of low-potassium tholeitic basalt has undergone regional metamorphism of a transition zone between greenchist to amphibolite facies. The important mineral constituents of the volcanic suite are amphibole and plagioclase which appear to be the product of regional metamorphism. These minerals have been recognized as the main indicators of metamorphic temperature and pressure. With a view to understand the P-T conditions of metamorphism of the belt, electron microprobe studies were carried out on amphibole and plagioclase and the chemical data was used to decipher the metamorphic conditions. The results obtained indicated a metamorphic temperature of about 6000 c and pressure of 5 kbs. for the Hutti greenstone belt.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. Adobe, dried mud bricks, have been used since before historic time in the construction of dwellings. Building materials are normally evaluated for thermal performance based on measurements known as R- and U-values. The R-value is an indicator of the ability of a wall to insulate effectively and the higher the R-value, the better it is as an insulating material. The U-value, or value of conductance, is the reciprocal of the R-value and reflects the rate at which heat is conducted through a material. But the "heat capacity of the wall" must also be considered. This measures the length of time that passes before a steady state of heat flow is achieved. The effective U-value measures both the resistance to the transfer of heat and the capacity to hold heat. These latter value make adobe a far more interesting as a modern building material that was formerly recognized.

Discovery of a mine is a complex affair. No mine is simply found but comes about through the efforts of many. It is difficult to establish "credit" when a mine is found and becomes a viable operation, or "guilt" when a mine is lost, goes bankrupt, or remains undeveloped. The story of the Toquepala and Cuajone developments entails various stages of: (1) discovery and recognition; (2) testing and innovation; (3) political and industrial negotiation and intrigue; and (4) finance, development, and operation. The Toquepala and Cuajone projects introduced innovative drilling techniques, were among the first major porphyry copper deposits to utilize induced polarization (1P)geophysical methods, were among the first deposits to undertake complete feasibility studies on drilled- out ore bodies, and were developed by the first large Western Hemisphere copper mining consortium. Many persons have contributed to the development of these two great deposits. Some of the names have been lost and certain contributions have gone unrecognized. I apologize for these omissions.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in southwestern Chihuahua State, Mexico. The prospect was discovered by a Francisco Gold Corp. geologist in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grass-root exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas Silver Camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiary age. The mineralization appears to be both structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite. The deposit’s gold distribution, as recorded from drill-hole data and surface samples, varies from 0.2 to 650.0 g/t. The estimated geological resource, as calculated from an independent study completed in 1998, was 3.0 million oz @ 2.03 g/t including a minable reserve of1.8 million oz @ 3.3 g/t.

"A numerical modeling was conducted to describe the behavior of overlying strata on the longwall top coal caving face for exploitation of a 16.8 m thick coal seam. Three typical structural models, including the Cantilever Structure (CS), Lower Cantilever and Upper Hinged Arch Structure (LC&UHA), and Lower Arch and Upper Voussoir Beam (LA&UVB), were developed. Based on mechanical analysis of the different structures of the key strata, and considering the behaviors of the broken igneous rock strata, a method was proposed and applied to estimate the structures of the overburden strata. The results had been verified by a field micro-seismic monitoring test. The paper provides a foundational method to determine the shield loadings for the top coal caving longwall face.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top coal caving (LTCC) is a highly productive underground mining technology which has been widely applied to the exploitation of the thick coal seams in China and other countries due to its high efficiency (Ju and Xu, 2013; Ju, Xu, and Wang, 2011; Liu et al., 2009). In recent years, a large amount of research on mining pressure forecast, strata control, and mechanical equipment improvement of the LTCC technology has been carried out, which greatly advances the field application of the technology (Liu et al., 2009; Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011; Chen and Li, 2011; Yin, Yan, and An, 2008). In 2006, the LTCC technology was first applied to the exploitation in a 20 m thick coal seam at the Tashan Coal Mine in China (Yan et al., 2011). Ten years of mining at the Tashan Coal Mine has highlighted the importance of the support management in controlling the roof strata on the extra-thick LTCC face. The mining pressure is closely related to the structural features of the overlying strata and its movement laws (Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011). However, the distributions of three zones—caving zone, fracture zone, and deformation zone—on the fully mechanized caving longwalls changed significantly with the increase in thickness of the coal seam (Chen and Li, 2011). The behavior changes of the roof strata led to abnormal pressure in the mining face and resulted in the difficulty of surrounding rock control (Yin, Yan, and An, 2008; Liu et al., 2009; Yan et al., 2011; Gong and Jin, 2008). Therefore, the theoretical research focused on the behavior of overlying strata to reveal the laws of mining pressure has important theoretical significance and practical value.Many classical studies (Qian and Shi, 2003; Feng, 2010; Yu, 2015; Yu, Yan, and Liu, 2012) had been done to describe the behavior of overlying strata in the mining process. It has also been reported that magma intrusion causes an important effect on the surrounding rock, coal, and methane (Wang et al., 2005; Liu et al., 2007). On the one hand, the property and structure of the coal seam was obviously changed by the magma intrusion and resulted in a potential danger of a gas outburst during the mining process (Chen et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2014). On the other hand, the hard igneous strata and the joints occurred with the magma cooled, causing an abnormal behavior of overlying strata and resulting in a series of dynamic disasters during mining (Xuan, Xu, and Lu, 2014; Lu et al., 2016). In fact, many coal fields in China are intruded by igneous sill, including the Datong, Shuozhou, Huainan, and Xuzhou coal fields (Chen et al., 2014; Wu, 2011). The 3–5 coal seam at Tashan Coal Mine in Datong coal field is very thick and is intruded by a large area of layered lamprophyre rock. Face falls and shield failures occurred frequently during the face retreat."

In underground construction and mining work, situations occasionally occur where hard rock or concrete must be excavated at locations near critical structures or utilities. Fearing damage from blasting, contractors and engineers often explore the viability of using mechanical methods or expansive concrete to facilitate the excavation work. However, for moderate to large excavations, the prolonged duration and high cost of using these methods is often impractical. In these situations, under the right conditions, controlled blasting and blast-management methods can be used to speedup the work and lessen costs. The process of determining whether or not blasting is practical is often complex, particularly when risks are high. In this paper, general methods of conducting blasting risk evaluations and outlined and considerations for blast design and risk management are reviewed. This paper also includes three blasting case histories demonstrating how these techniques were used at recent projects. In the first case, a cautious blasting program was developed to facilitate the removal of concrete and rock within a large section of an active mineshaft. The second case involved critical blasting to excavate a dry lake-tap connection between a tunnel and a shaft at the Southern Nevada Water Intake No. 2 project in Henderson, Nevada. The third case history describes how novel blasting methods were used to carefully drop a 2,721,500-kg (6,000,000-lb) concrete caisson into a1.2-m (4-ft) rock socket at the Detroit Outfall No. 2 project in Detroit, MI.

"There are many multi-layer coal reserves in China which account for nearly 20 to 25% of the existing proven reserves. When the coals are mined in a descending order using the fully mechanized long wall mining method, they usually have roof collapse with cavity and air leak in roadways and long wall stopes; this is especially relevant when the thickness of the rock between two coals is less than 5.0 m, as the roof stability of lower seam would be greatly reduced. At the Wuhushan Mine, such abnormal strata behavior occurs, including abnormal support stress, irregular period roof pressure, and roof falls in the face. The main reasons for these behaviors include smaller roof thickness, lower rock strength, and mining influence of upper coal; these reasons were determined by analyzing the in situ conditions. A mechanics-based model of the mine geometry was set up to study the sources of stress, the stress evolution of coal, and the discriminant method of roof stability; to obtain the smallest safe thickness of roof between two coal layers, numerical modeling was applied to analyze the relations between the roof thickness and its displacement distribution. Based on the above research, the No.1001 face was divided into easy roof caving zone (ERCZ), roof caving transition zone (RCTZ), and unlikely to roof caving zone (URCZ). In the ERCZ, comprehensive grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented; in the RCTZ, local grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented. Furthermore, a face stability control index and its range were developed in a fully mechanized face combined with mine pressure observation. After implementing this strategy, there have been no unexpected roof caving or other serious strata behaviors.INTRODUCTIONChina is the country with the largest coal production in the world, and the conditions for its coal seams are particularly complicated. For example, in China’s Datong, Wuda, Pingdingshan, and Qinshui mining areas, there are a large number of multi-layer coal seams. The thickness of these coal seams ranges from 1.3 m to more than 10 m, and the spacing between layers is from under 1.0 m to over 30 m. A common problem with these coal seams is that one layer of mining has a large impact on other coal seams, which are customarily referred to as close-distance coal seams. According to statistics, close-distance coal seams account for about 20–25% and 15–18% of China’s coal reserves and production, respectively.From the reference research of Huang (1999, 2002, 2018) and Tu (2010, 2011) we can learn that in the mining process of close-distance coal seams, downward mining is mainly used. When the upper-layer coal is mined, it has a huge mining disturbance effect on the floor (that is, the roof of the lower coal). The mining disturbance increases the mining fissure in the rockmass and weakens the strata strength. The mining problem formed by this issue is that when the lower coal is mined, problems such as difficulty in roadway support, collapse of stope roof, and difficulty in ventilation are often encountered. Especially for the mining of medium-thick coal seam groups with a layer spacing of less than 5.0 m, there has been a large-scale roof collapse accident with a fall height of more than 10.0 m. In response to such problems, domestic and foreign scholars and engineers such as Tan, Zhao, and Xiao (2010), Xie et al. (2017), and others have also carried out targeted theoretical and practical research."

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke, and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale Fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL) in Fairchance, PA, using Ponderosa Pine, Red Oak, Douglas-fir, high and low volatile coals, PVC and SBR conveyor belt, No. 2 diesel fuel, and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector, and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations, and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (1). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters? Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicates of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Their crystalline framework is based on a three dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra with all four oxygens shared by adjacent tetrahedra. The alkali and alkaline-earth cations are loosely bound within this framework structure and may be exchanged, to varying degrees, with other cations or molecular water. Most zeolites can be reversibly dehydrated. At present, close to 40 natural zeolite minerals have been identified and over 100 zeolites have been synthesized. Zeolites are a family of hydrous aluminosilicate minerals whose physical properties provide unique features for a wide variety of practical applications. Zeolites have been known for more than 200 years, but it was not until the middle of this century that their economic potential and widespread occurrence in sedimentary rocks were known. Since 1950, literally thousands of articles and patents have appeared in technical literature, and commercial pro¬duction of natural zeolites may now exceed 1 Mt worldwide an¬nually. In the past 40 years, the zeolite mineral group has changed from that of a museum curiosity to one of an established industrial mineral commodity. According to Breck (1974), zeolites are characterized by the following properties: 1) High degree of hydration, 2) Low density and large void volume when dehydrated, 3) Stability of the crystal structure of many zeolites when dehydrated, 4) Cation exchange properties, 5) Uniform molecular-sized channels in the dehydrated crys¬tals, 6) Ability to adsorb gases and vapors, 7) Catalytic properties. All zeolites are molecular sieves, but not all molecular sieves are zeolites. Activated carbon, activated clays, alumina powder, and silica gels are also molecular sieves. Molecular sieves are materials that can selectively adsorb molecules on the basis of their size, shape, or electrical charge (Clifton, 1987). Commercial application of zeolites is based on the following physical properties: molecular sieving, ion exchange, adsorption, and catalysis. Potential commercial utilization includes hundreds of possible applications. The principal uses at this time, however, are as fol¬lows: -Ammonium-ion removal in waste stream treatment, sewage treat¬ment, pet litter, and aquaculture, -Odor control, -Heavy metal ion removal from nuclear, mine and industrial wastes, -Agricultural use, such as soil conditioner and animal feed supplement. An estimated 800 kt to 1 Mt of natural zeolites were produced and consumed worldwide in 1991. Eight small operators reported collective production and consumption of an estimated 18 kt of natural zeolites in the United States during 1991, mostly for feed additives and for odor control, aquacultural, agricultural, catalytic, and ion exchange applications (Eyde, 1992).

The main purpose of mine ventilation design is to provide sufficient quantity and quality of air to the workers and to dilute methane and other contaminants. It is generally perceived that the additional air along the longwall face will improve methane dilution on the face and in the tailgate. However, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling efforts at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded research project have found that higher flow velocities along the longwall face are shown to increase the pressure differential between the gob and longwall face allowing more methane to be entrained in the active face and tailgate (TG) area, thereby negating the dilution effect. The increased face ventilation causes an increase in pressure along the headgate side which allows more oxygen to ingress into the gob area, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen available to form explosive methane air mixtures in the gob and to support spontaneous combustion of the coal. Two things are happening at two different locations along the longwall face, increase in pressure as the flow enters the active area cause an increase in pressure which forces more oxygen into the gob, but as the flow is developed along the longwall face, the higher velocities causes greater pressure drop allowing methane to enter the active face further downstream from the headgate (HG) towards the tailgate side. In this paper, a parametric study will be presented to discuss the effect that varying the face air quantity has on methane concentrations in the tailgate and formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in the gob. Counter to conventional wisdom, it appears that increased longwall face air quantities may increase the explosion hazard as they result in increased EGZ volumes in the gob, along with increased methane quantities in the tailgate return.
