The Lone Tree gold mine is located about 4S kilometers east from Winnemucca on the west flank of Lone Tree Hill in Humboldt County, Nevada. The deposit occurs at the north end of the low, rolling Havallah Hills and is about 1 kilometer south of Interstate Highway 80, in sections 11 and 14, Township 34 North, Range 42 East, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian (Fig. 1). The Lone Tree deposit is outside of any previously established mining district and all lands are owned or controlled by Santa Fe Pacific Gold or affiliated companies.

A low grade iron ore is mined underground at Grace Mine using the panel caving method. Most of the development work is located in footwall. The runways for LHD equipments are heavily supported with steel sets on five foot centers. The sets are embedded in two to three feet of concrete. The initial cost of support is one of the largest single costs of production. During the process of ore-win¬ning, supports frequently fail, necessitating expensive repair. There is no systematic pattern to the failure of supports. A rock mechanics program was launched to isolate causes and their relative contributions to the failure of supports. The preliminary results are presented. A typical portion of a runway is instrumented to monitor rock mass movements around the runway and the corresponding response of supports as various mining activities are carried out in the neighborhood. We believe that such a program is a prerequisite to any remedial measure to alleviate pressure problem at Grace Mine.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimate of the total remaining reserves of lignite in this country as of Jan. 1, 1967 was about 448 billion tons. This represents 27 percent of the total coal reserves on a tonnage basis and about 17 percent on a thermal basis. Approximately 98 percent of these reserves are in a vast lignite field located in western North Dakota and eastern Montana. This field also extends north into the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Despite these large reserves and relative ease of mining by stripping operations, lignite production historically has accounted for less than 1 percent of the national total. This is largely due to the fact that the lignite deposits are located in an area that has no large centers of population and the economical radius of transportation is limited by its relatively high moisture and low heating value. Commercial utilization of North Dakota lignite for power production became firmly established in the mid-1920's with the development of the first successful lignite-burning equipment. Most of the early lignite-fired boilers were equipped with spreader stokers, but as the size of the plants increased, pulverized-coal firing became the more popular method, and with few exceptions, the plants built during the past 15 years are pc-fired.

The large scale transportation and storage of sulphur in the liquid state is a relatively new development, but is really only a logical extension of old mining and processing techniques, It is not known who the first person was to win a relatively pure sulphur from ore by melting, but this method was commercially used at least two hundred years ago in Sicily and is still in use today. The Frasch process of mining was invented over sixty years ago, and the development and improvement of-liquid sulphur pumping and handling techniques has paralleled the growth in the Frasch mining industry. During the last fifty years, improvements in the technology of using sulphur have included the premelting of sulphur prior to its being burned for acid production or conversion into CS2 and other compounds. Yet, until fairly recent times, sulphur produced as liquid has been solidified into large blocks at the producing point, broken down by blasting or with mechanical equipment, and shipped in bulk form as a solid.

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world's output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

The operation of a modern coal preparation plant, particularly in western Canada, is a very complex task. Most western Canadian operations are processing two or more, sometimes up to ten, different seams through the same plant. This requires a sophisticated multi-circuit plant that needs close operational control. Add the soft nature and large amounts of natural fines of western Canadian coal and you have a formidable cleaning task. To assist in the operation, programmable controllers and sophisticated control concepts are being more widely used. Two of the newest coal preparation plants in Canada have been designed by Raymond Kaiser Engineers Inc. and its Canadian subsidiary, Phillips Barratt Kaiser Engineering, Ltd. The use of programmable controllers and control systems will be illustrated by showing their application in a "typical" western Canadian coal plant. This example will cover flowsheet design, control concept systems application, and possible future uses.

The hydraulic movement of coal is here defined as the movement of all sizes of coal in pipes and open flumes, by gravity and against gravity. It is not restricted to coal which is in slurry form. In other words, it is not crushed to a size in the 8 to 20 mesh size range. The top size could be as high as 12 inches. The dewatering of coal which is transported hydraulically is carried out to restore the coal to a suitable form for further cleaning, or for transportation by other methods. The process involves complete separation of all the coal, wood and rock from the water so that the water can be recycled without undue damage to pumps, pipes and monitors.

To protect the water supply for the Metropolitan Chicago area, the Illinois legislature, in 1889, created the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. To insure the quality of the water supply, the Sanitary District collected and diverted the wastes of 750,000 people away from Lake Michigan. Today, the Sanitary District collects and treats the wastes from a domestic population of 5 ¼ million people and an industrial waste load equivalent to 4 ¼ million people. The District serves Chicago and 120 other cities and suburbs in an 858 square mile area. An average of 1300 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day, producing as a by- product about 700 dry tons of solids which contains more than $10,000 worth of plant nutrients when equated to the value of commercial fertilizer purchased in the retail market. The Sanitary District considered several alternatives to past methods for disposing of these solids, and chose land application as a technique to utilize the solids produced by the wastewater treatment process in a beneficial manner.

"Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. "The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

The exploiting of geothermal steam is a new endeavor in this country and is for that matter a very new science in the world. With the majority of steam wells in the world having been drilled during the last twelve years relatively little experience and knowledge has been gained that can guide us as compared to the techniques the oil and gas producers have developed for their use. We few technical personnel associated with the field find it a continuous challenge to understand and explain what effects or causes the various unusual phenomenon experienced. We have had unending discussions attempting to formulate pet theories which we can use as guides. We know, so the geologists tell us, that the source of the heat is from the hot magmatic core of the earth. Theory has it that the magma is cooling off and that hot gases are given off as this magma cools and shrinks. In volcanic' areas along fault lines where the magma reaches closer to the surface than in other areas, there is a higher concentration of gas evolution; consequently, geyser or geothermal areas are developed. As these hot gases rise toward the surface they encounter various minerals, including overlying bodies of water. It is into these underground lakes that our wells are penetrating. As the heat enters these lakes it spreads out by conduction, convection and water migration. We can strike this hot water over quite large areas in many of the geothermal fields. At present there is one anomaly to this in the United States as there is in Italy where our wells do not penetrate a hot water lake. This is at The Big Geysers in California. Here superheated steam is produced with a heat content, so high that it could not have been boiled off of a fresh water pool. This puzzled us until last year when a well was completed into a large body of brine in the Imperial Valley. This brine exists at close to 500°F and at a hydrostatic pressure sufficient to preclude any boiling. It is now believed by some of us that a similar pool of brine must exist below The Big Geysers area, from which the steam is emanating. If there is such a brine pool, it offers a plausible explanation of the high-heat content, for brine boils at a higher temperature than fresh water. I am now beginning to think that a similar brine pool may exist under all the geothermal basins for if it is under two of them, it is highly probable that it is under the others. The partial understanding of what we are drilling toward, and formulating a theory to explain its behavior helps guide us in our steam well drilling.

Consider a typical blast at a surface gold mine in North America. For example, the low-grade area of Bench 4000 at AMAX Gold's Sleeper Mine (Winnemucca, Nevada). Bench 4000 is 20 feet high (=6m) , and blast holes are drilled and sampled on a 14 foot by 14 foot square grid (a4m x 4m). A representative blast includes between 50 and 150 holes, encompassing 15,000 to 45,000 tons of material (w14,000 to 41,000 metric tons).

This study is initiated to investigate the efficiency of separation of mineral slimes using electroflotation as compared to that of column and conventional flotation techniques. Important parameters such as collector concentration, pH, current density, aeration rate, etc., have been studied. The results indicate that electroflotation can be used more efficiently in processing rutile slimes (10 µ) under certain operating conditions.

In the operation of today's large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and 'the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

Designers, engineers, and contractors are using three-dimensional seismic tomography for geotechnical site investigations and during tunnel excavation for hard rock and soft ground applications. Utilizing multiple types of seismic signals produced by a TBM, drill, or impact breaker, the reflection of different velocity features are processed into a holographic image of the actual structure to be encountered. The Mill Creek Phase 3 alignment in Cleveland, Ohio, was imaged to define existing conditions along a 1,200-ft section of a proposed 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter CSO tunnel and, specifically, a zone of expected anomalous conditions where drilling was inconclusive. In Japan, Kajima Corporation used TRT™ to image a number of tunnels including the Fujikawa and Kanaya tunnels in a combination of methods to map structural features along the alignment.

Ten small and intermediate-sized [11 GJ/hr to 264 GJ/hr (10,000 lb/hr steam to 250,000 lb/hr steam)] coal-fired boilers in the upper Midwest have each been tested on both a bituminous eastern coal and a subbituminous western coal. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of substituting western subbituminous coal for eastern bituminous coal as a means of reducing the SO x emissions from this class of boiler and to demonstrate the feasibility of greatly expanded western coal utilization as a means of reducing the use of oil and gas. The scope of this study was such that the representative boiler types were tested on both eastern and western coal for a period of time sufficient to completely characterize their individual emission and operational characteristics.

Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is an investor-owned public utility which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 4, 1920, with general offices at 901 Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the present time PP&L is operating five coal-fired steam electric stations, two hydroelectric stations and one steam heat plant which is being converted from anthracite to oil fired. In addition, PP&L is a partner in both the Keystone and Conemaugh mine mouth bituminous coal-fired steam electric stations in Central Pennsylvania and also part owner of a company which operates another hydroelectric station. PP&L plants, other than the two mine mouth stations, are located in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. (Figure 1) The company derives about 99% of its operating revenues from supplying electric service, while the balance is from the one steam heat plant serving the city of Harrisburg. The entire service area covering 10,000 square miles in 29 counties, has a population of approximately 2,300,000 people. The area served is mostly suburban. It includes 109 communities each having a population in excess of 5,000 people. The largest cities served are Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport which range from 50,000 - 120,000 in population. So you see our service area does not include any major cities. The area has industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural and recreational activities that are linked with the Eastern Megalopolis by an extensive interstate limited-access highway system and railroad networks. We consider this Central Eastern Pennsylvania area we serve as the "heart of the market" -- an area with great growth potential.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. 'Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.
