An ore-pass is an underground conduit used to transfer ore from one level of a mine to another. This method of transportation depends on the elevation energy only; therefore, it has very low operating cost. However, two inherent problems may hamper this process: (1) hang-ups of interlocked pieces and (2) a sudden release of trapped air from the ore-pass (belching). These events can create unsafe conditions with the potential for catastrophic consequences. This paper presents a summary of CFD modeling studies that were formulated to investigate the pressure build-up and belching of dust and rock particles from long ore-passes. The models were calibrated against field data collected from an actual ore-pass system and used to predict the airflow-pressure distributions in the mine for various ore feed rates and ore-pass geometries. P.T. Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg ore-pass system (240,000 tpd capacity) was used for this purpose. This system comprises of four active ore-passes, with each being more than 600 m in vertical length.

The Annacis Island Outfall Project includes two TBM bored tunnels with face pressures above 3.5 bar, with an internal diameter of 4.2 metres. This paper discusses the innovative approach to TBM tunnelling and TBM design at the Annacis Outfall Project. The TBM custom design includes a 3.6 m OD core machine manufactured by Herrenknecht and a 5.0 m add-on by the Contractor (Bessac), acting as an extension kit, with optimized gantry design to accommodate for short tunnel drives and quicker launches. This novel design approach produced safety improvement, cost and schedule savings while streamlining logistics of TBM retrieval.

Introduction Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name Split Sets, are presently under research and development by Ingersoll-Rand Company and Dr. James J. Scott, inventor. Conceived in 1953, the system is a patented process undergoing extensive field and laboratory testing. The author has published papers on the Split Set System earlier (References 4, 5, 6) The Split Set System holds promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The system produces an interior reinforcement to a rock mass which: 1. Is simple in its concept. 2. Adjusts to the degree of restraint needed to match rock properties. 3. Provides a yieldable support and, later, a more rigid support as it is needed. 4. Pre-loads the rock in compression to increase stability. 5. Is a full-contact, fully tensioned device to resist rock loads. 6. Minimizes the stress concentration effects inherent in many interior support devices. 7. Improves safety for the miner. 8. Is cheaper than a grouted system. 9. Offers the rock mechanics engineer an opportunity to design in a fashion not before possible.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990's. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

The stability of shale gas wells drilled through current and future coal reserves can be compromised by ground deformations due to nearby longwall mining. Depending on the longwall-induced rockmass permeability, the high-pressure explosive gas from the damaged well may reach mine workings and overwhelm the mine ventilation systems. This study uses geomechanical models to estimate the rockmass permeability induced by mining. A two-panel longwall model of a deep, 341-m-cover mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania is constructed in 3DEC to explicitly model the rockmass by a discrete fracture network (DFN) technique. Stress-induced fracture apertures and permeabilities are calculated across the model and are validated against permeability measurements. A fracture flow code (FFC) is developed to use these results to predict potential inflow to the mine should a gas well breach occur. One hundred DFN realizations are simulated, and the results show that for a gas pressure of 2.4 MPa, the average of the predicted inflow rates to this deep-cover mine is 0.006 m3/ s, significantly lower than the average inflow of 0.22 m3/ s for a shallow-cover mine (145-m deep) studied in the previous work (Khademian, et al. 2021). The result can help assess the potential hazards of a shale gas well breach for mine safety and evaluate the ventilation requirements to mitigate the risk.

The McDonald deposit is a volcanic-hosted epithermal gold resource that is estimated to contain 251,000 kg of gold in 375 Mt of ore at an average grade of 0.7 g/t gold. Phelps Dodge exploration geologists, working for the Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture, discovered the deposit in 1989. By the end of 1992, 494 drill holes for over 113,000 m of drilling, bulk sampling, soil geochemistry, geophysics, metallurgical testing, engineering, and environmental studies had been completed to support feasibility studies. The discovery of McDonald required vision, persistence, and commitment of everyone from the geologist on the drill rig to the senior management of the company.

The deformations resulting from excavation of very large openings are compared using two-dimensional F.E. continuum analyses and discontinuous physical models (20,000 discrete blocks). Both the joint orientations and the model horizontal stress levels were varied. Some models were dynamically loaded to simulate earthquakes (0.2-0.7 g). Model deformations were recorded using photogrammetry. The changes in deformation when increasing the simulated spans from 20 m to 50 m were of particular interest. High horizontal stress caused surface heave when joint orientations were favourable for arch stability. Joint orientations also determined whether the pillars between parallel openings were in a state of compression or tension. INTRODUCTION The engineering performance of large rock caverns has traditionally been learned from mining and hydro power projects, where the depth below surface is often many times greater than the span of the openings. Deformations measured in the walls and roofs of hydro power caverns generally range from about 5-50 mm, though there is a documented case where a wall moved in 126 mm (1), and another where the arch moved down 147 mm (2). Discussion by A.E Agnew Strachan's paper summarizes a wealth of data on water-storage dam "incidents" published by USCOLD and ASCE in 1988, together with a review of tailings-dam incidents published by USCOLD in 1994. The data is summarized by text and 11 histograms. The histograms present a useful compilation of these data, although the patterns within the histogram blocks did not survive the Mining Engineering printing process - so their usefulness is impaired. Unfortunately, the text discussion is too cursory and does not highlight the significant relationships among the various causes of the incidents. Four paragraphs of text and Fig. 1 were devoted to water-storage dams, but the discussion is too sketchy, and Fig. 1 is unclear. Important statistics that could be uncovered are: •the total number of dam incidents tabulated were 500+, •earth embankments constituted 73% of those in operation and •incidents related to earth embankments were 75%, of which dam failures accounted for 24%, major repairs accounted for 42% and accidents accounted for 34%. Strachan concluded that "the majority of the dam failures are associated with overtopping (p. 49), and that the majority of incidents are associated with spillway and other facility structures" - although this is difficult to discern from Fig. 1. Confusion regarding Strachan's use of the terms "dam failures" and "incidents" is compounded by his use of "failures" and "accidents" in one paragraph of his Introduction section followed by his use of "incidents" in the next paragraph. Getting to the meat of Strachan's important paper, the tailings-dam incident survey (USCOLD, 1994), the connection between Figs 2 through 11 seems obscure. First, in the four paragraphs of introductory material, one learns that "incidents consisted of failures, accidents, seepage and other incidents of performance that did not meet design criteria" (p. 50). One does learn the helpful caveat that "structures not related to mill tailings were not included in the review" - so that the Buffalo Creek (West Virginia in 1972) and Aberfan (Wales in 1966) coal-mine failures, together with the ongoing metal-mine remediation work at Summitville (Colorado) do not muddy the waters of his paper. The all-too-brief discussion of the data shown in Figs. 3 through 11 (185 dams in USCOLD plus 26 dams in UNEP) reveals the following: •Figure 3: 57% of the incidents (failures and accidents) occurred with dams less than 20-m (66-ft) in height. •Figure 4: 63% of the incidents were due to failures alone (subset of Fig. 3). •Figure 5: Active dams had 82% of the accidents and 93% of the failures. •Figure 6: Types of dams (upstream, water-retention, downstream, centerline and "unknown") separated according to incidents. •Figure 7: Breaks out the incidents in Fig. 6 by failures, accidents and ground water. •Figure 8: Breaks out incidents by type (overtopping, slope stability, earthquake, foundation, seepage, structural, erosion, mine subsidence and "unknown"). •Figure 9: Separates Fig. 8 data into active and inactive dams. •Figure 10: Separates Fig. 9 data into failures and accidents. •Figure 11: Same as Fig. 8, but broken out by tailings-dam type (Fig. 6). The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. Over the past six years, 4.5 million tonnes (5.0 million short tons) of gold ore have been heap leached at the Alligator Ridge Mine. Ore is leached in successive lifts, resulting in heap heights of 20 m (66 ft). Recoveries from each lift are determined through an extensive post-leach drilling program. The relationships between heap height, recovery rate, ore preparation, heap construction, and leach solution application are discussed.

The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Fig. 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc., it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88 t (3.1 million oz) of gold. Crushing operations for the openpit mine are located in a 13,500-m3 (477,000-cu ft) underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m (72 ft). More than 3,600 m (11,800 ft) of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the main cavern, conveyor system exit tunnel, the mechanical system access tunnels and two 4.2-m- (13.7-ft-) diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) (Fig. 2). Preliminary engineering for the project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc. (Rizzo), was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

A first principle flotation model has been derived from the basic mechanisms involved in flotation. The model consists of a series of analytical equations for bubble generation, bubble-particle collision, attachment, detachment, and froth phase recovery. The model can predict flotation from both hydrodynamic and surface chemistry parameters such as bubble size, particle size, energy dissipation rate, ?-potentials, contact angles (?), etc. The model has been validated in a series of laboratory batch flotation experiments, in which mono-sized glass beads are used as feeds. The experimental results are in good agreement with model predictions both in terms of grade and recovery.

INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170' litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

Introduction Trapper mine is a dip-line strip coal mine, located about 10 km (6 miles) southwest of Craig, CO. The mine provides the Craig Generating Station, operated by Colorado-Ute, with about 2 Mt (2.3 million st) of coal annually. The Trapper mine is situated on a hillside that climbs in elevation from 2 to 2.5 km (6500 to 7400 ft) at average grade of 15%. The coal seams dip at about 16% down-grade and they outcrop near the top of the hillside. They exceed maximum stripping depth in 1 to 1.7 km (3500 to 5500 ft) of pit length. Stripping in the three existing pits is performed with three Page 752 23 m3 (30 cu yd) walking draglines. Two of the pits are currently being cast blasted. Until the active cut, the Derringer pit was cast blasted only where the lower mined seam exceeded stripping capabilities and the pit was a single seam operation. Now, a 9-m (30-ft) interburden bench has been incorporated into the stripping plan. This bench protects the first seam of coal from shear when the overburden is cast blasted. The cast blasted section of the 1.6 km (53,000 ft) long pit has been increased from the 457 m (1500 ft) casted previ¬ously to 1 km (3500 ft). High speed films show the coal losses due to shear of the blast are minimal. The pit width in Derringer pit is 61 m (200 ft). This is necessary for efficient spoil side stripping of a relatively thin interburden in the two-seam section of the pit. The Enfield pit is entirely cast blasted. The single seam pit is 46 m (150 ft) wide, 1.1 km (3600 ft) long, and varies from 15 and 46 m (50 and 150 ft) in overburden depth. Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

The reclamation of an open dragline pit (Pond A3P-2) at the Gibbons Creek lignite mine in east-central Texas required neutralization of acid mine pit water. At the start of treatment with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) on March 28, 2000, the pond had partially filled with 913,000 m3 (740 acre ft) of pH 4.9 water. Another 666,600 m3 (540 acre ft) of pH 3.3 water was pumped in from an adjacent pit (PitA3P- 1). By the end of the project (July 5, 2000), a combined volume of 1,579,000m3(1,280ac-ft or 417milliongal) in PondA3P-2 had been successfully treated to pH 8.2 with 431 t (475 st) of lime. This was two to three times more neutralizer than laboratory trials and detailed chemical titration had predicted. The main reasons for the difference are thought to be the inadequate representation in a laboratory setting of some of the chemical reactions that occurred in the field, including incomplete mixing of reactants, reactions with clay minerals in the pit walls, the kinetics of biologically-mediated reactions and the kinetics of aluminum oxyhydroxide polymerization (aging).

This paper presents a succinct overview of the Canadian coal situation. The topics treated specifically are: the rates of growth of coal supply and demand; the relationship between the coal and electricity generation industries which form its dominant market; the unique impact of nuclear generation on coal demand in Canada; and finally, a view of the developing technologies which will create opportunities for growth in the coal industry of the future. Resources The most important element of coal supply is the resource. The disposition of Canada's coal resources has a marked effect on their utilization, since industry in Canada has not generally developed around coal-fields. The distance from the major industrial centres of Ontario and Quebec to the major region of coal supply in Alberta and British Columbia has crested an economic barrier to the expansion of the use of domestic coal.

The Rocky Mountain region contains part of the paleocontinental shelf that lay in Arizona and New Mexico through Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming into Montana and North Dakota. The shelf was bounded by the northeast-southwest-trending Transcontinental arch and the Cordilleran miogeocline in late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic time. Major tectonic features that affected middle Phanerozoic sediments on the shelf were the Big Snowy trough and Williston basin in the north and the ancestral Rocky Mountains in the central part of the region. The Zuni uplift and similar positive areas occurred along the axis of the Transcontinental arch in the southern part. The late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic sedimentary rocks record transgressive-regressive marine cycles in which the Cordilleran shelf and much of the adjacent craton were inundated by epeiric seas. Early in the Carboniferous, an epeiric sea covered most of the shelf. Greater topographic relief developed in Late Mississippian, was at a maximum in Middle Pennsylvanian, and then diminished through Permian and Triassic time. The development in the Pennsylvanian Period of horsts and grabens along northwest- trending faults on the northwest flank of the Transcontinental arch resulted in the ancestral Rocky Mountain system. The eastern part of the region was emergent by Middle Triassic, and the emergence lasted until Middle Jurassic, owing to uplift along the Transcontinental arch. During the early part of the Mesozoic, the sediments were dominantly terrigenous and were deposited mostly in shallow littoral marine environments shifting to continental. Most middle Phanerozoic structural elements within the area of the shelf are characterized by lineaments that have either an east-northeast or a conjugate north-northwest trend. The east-northeast lineaments closely parallel the northeast trend of the continental slope (miogeocline) in Nevada to southern Idaho. The conjugate set closely parallels the northwesterly continuation of the miogeocline north of an approximately right- angle bend in south-central Idaho. The northeasterly trending Transcontinental arch and the northwest-trending margin of the Canadian Shield are parallel structural elements with the north- east and northwest trends of the miogeocline. The rectangular lineament pattern on the shelf suggests a system of rectilinear fractures within the underlying Precambrian crystalline basement rocks that moved several times in the Phanerozoic in response to external forces applied against the continental crust. Movement of these blocks influenced erosion, deposition, and lithofacies of the sediments in middle Phanerozoic time. Zones of crustal weakness, represented by the lineaments bounding these blocks, probably were influential in localizing sedimentary mineral accumulations and petroleum deposits, as well as later igneous intrusions, volcanism, and emplacement of hydrothermal ores. Igneous activity in this region was rare during the middle Phanerozoic, but these conjugate fractures seem to have been avenues for later passage of hydrothermal solutions responsible for ore emplacement.
