Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of a standing support, and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data. INTRODUCTION A hydraulic load cell, more commonly known by “flat jack” or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of roof to floor supports. These standing or roof to floor supports include, but are not limited to: pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports. Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. These load cells are produced in South Africa, and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the applications (Barczak). Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application, common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed as shown in Figure 1. The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19 gauge or 1.11125 mm (0.04375 inch) thickness, the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow a fluid to fill the unit and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1724 kPa (250 psi), pressure relief valve will keep the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure. The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells.

The main thrust of this paper covers the design, installation techniques and experience associated with the installation of eleven 1.5 m (4'-11") and three 2.87 m (9'-5") diameter shafts in 15 to 23 meters (50 to 75 ft) of water over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach implemented, permits the use of pre-fabricated shaft linings and incorporates a safe dry-tap method for connecting the offshore shafts to tunnels driven blind from deep land shafts over 4.8 Km (3 miles) away. This tunnel-shaft system is a unique venture employed at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station to meet plant cooling water requirements.

[The Yarnell gold deposit in the Weaver mining district, Yavapai County, Arizona, occurs in a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone in a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rocks around and above the low-angle, northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization. A wider envelope of weakly-propylitic altered rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz (±adularia) veining, stockwork formation, localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized) and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit, although the thickness of the zone and associated alter avian envelope diminish away from the orebody A sample of undo formed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 + 1.6 Ma. This date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As. Cu and Mo content. Both CO2- and H2O- rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit. Ninety-six reverse circulation holes and four diamond drill holes outline a bulk-minable mineral reserve of'4.1 million tons at 0.051 oz of Au per ton. An additional 2.7 million tons at 0.017 oz of Au per ton occurs in a low-grade zone above and subparallel to the main mineralized zone. Total calculated mineral inventory stands at 6.8 million tons at a grade of 0.038 oz of Au per ton, with a waste-to-ore ratio of 1.45:1. Column leach tests indicate that cyanide heap leach gold recoveries should exceed 70%.]

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970's. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator's area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator's hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

One of the most frequently asked quesitons is: "Where is copper (price and usage) going?" I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

The STG integrated method of grouting can be divided into the several phases as outlined in preceding chapters. For convenience in describing technical procedures, they can be grouped as: 1. Investigations in non-geotechnical, exploration bore¬holes. 2. Drilling the holes necessary for geotechnical investiga¬tions and for grouting. 3. Conducting appropriate hydrogeologic tests in those holes and consequent calculations. 4. The preparation of a clay mortar. 5. The preparation of a clay-cement grout with additives. 6. The injection of the grout. 7. Checking the quality of the grout curtain. Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 are discussed below. These activities contain the procedural aspects of grouting. 7.1 DRILLING GROUT HOLES Grout holes belong to a very select class of drillholes. The necessary drilling equipment must enable the operator to drill the holes in inclined, twisting directions. In addi¬tion, the equipment must permit drilling under structurally and hydrogeologically complex conditions. The equipment must permit the operator to conduct specific testing activi¬ties in the drillholes. These activities include hydrodynamic analyses, flowmetric analysis, and the installation and re¬moval of deflectors, packers, grouting plugs, casings, lin¬ers, pumping facilities and other work. As explained in Chapters 5 and 6, the grouting of sat¬urated rock is conducted both through holes drilled from the surface and through holes drilled from the face of a shaft, drift, or tunnel. The drilling of grout holes from the surface can be carried out by an aggregate of equipment that can be the same equipment used for drilling exploration boreholes. Depending on the projected depth of the holes, the STG ZIF- 1200MR and ZIF-650 drilling rigs (or modifications of them) are used. The SKB-4, SKB-5 and SKB-7 high-output drilling rigs (workover rigs) have been used in recent years. The STG BMP-24 drilling rigs are used for carrying out the descent-lifting operations for drilling holes from the sur¬face. In a number of cases, the UKB-500C, URB-3AM and URB-2A power-fed drilling equipment is used for drilling holes from the surface. It should be noted that the drilling of grout holes usually requires an electric drive assembly. Drilling with diesel drive assemblies would be used only to preclude the possi¬bility of losing electric power during drilling operations. Turbine drilling would be used only for appropriate techni¬cal-economic reasons. The selection of the grout hole design is determined by the hydrogeological and structural geological conditions at the site as interpreted in Chapters 2 and 3. The design of grout holes must be as simple as possible in order to min¬imize costs. Hole design guidelines can be adopted as a basis for this purpose, unless site-specific conditions require otherwise. The mouth of the drillhole must be outfitted with a guide-pipe having a length of at least 2 m and an outside diameter from 219 to 234 mm. The upper part of the hole must be attached by a jig consisting of borehole casing that has a diameter ranging from 108 to 146 mm. The length of the jig h is determined by the equation [ ] where k = 1.1 to 1.2 is the load factor; P,, is the injection pressure of the grout into the mouth of the drillhole; D is the external diameter of the jig pipe; m = 0.6 to 0.7 is the work condition factor; T[ ].1 MPa is the bonding value of the rock cemented to the jig. The grout hole is drilled from the jig shoe to the de¬signed depth using a rock-crushing bit with a diameter of 93 mm or more. However in complex hydrogeological condi¬tions when the shaft intersects unstable rock, other hole designs can be used. The diameter of grout holes must permit an aggregate of investigations to be conducted in them using down-hole borehole geophysical and flowmetric logging instruments. It is necessary to cement the casing strings reliably in the grout holes, thereby permitting the injection of the grout under high pressure through the pres¬sure tight mouth of the borehole. Technological details for drilling grout holes such as the rotational rate of the drill bit, the axial load on the rock¬crushing bit, and the drilling fluid flow rate are optimized for the specific rock-hydrogeological conditions largely by experience. The hole diameter and type of rock crushing bit are important variables in these details of drilling. It is advisable to drill holes using water as the drilling fluid. However in those cases where the hole walls are unstable or under very high ground water pressure, the use of a well¬ engineered drilling mud should not be precluded. Unfortu¬nately, drilling mud can influence test results. When steeply dipping fractures with inclination angles of more than 60 to 70° are encountered, it is necessary to drill guided, inclined grout holes. The economics of transporting minerals by sea in less than full cargo lots encompasses an analysis of production costs, sale and inventory calculations and a careful comparison of ocean freight costs all of which when pieced together will usually definitively indicate which of the ocean freight alternatives is the correct one for the economic factors involved. To illustrate: Let us assume that a production to be marketed yields 60,000 metric tons of copper concentrates over a twelve month period. Shipment is geographically viable through Vancouver, B.C. The production has been sold to a Japanese Smelter and the mine produces at a rate of 5,000 metric tons of concentrates per month. The copper has been sold CIF FO. The Seller has carefully investigated ocean freight rates Vancouver, B.C./Hibi, Japan and finds that he could obtain a twelve month freight contract at $15.00 per metric ton FIGS based on a loading/discharging speed of 4000/ 2000 metric tons per WWDSHEX (weather working day, Sundays and Holidays excluded) this freight rate being predicated on shipping in lots of minimum. 15,000 tons. A further freight investigation reveals that to ship at the same terms and conditions but in lots of 5,000 tons, and shipping each month (in accordance with the mine's actual production) would cost $20.00 per metric ton FIOS. The calculation that is now made is whether it is more desireable to pay a higher ocean freight by shipping in 5,000 ton lots or to pay the lower freight where here the ocean freight involves a difference of some $300,000.00.

Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th/Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lininig of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The majority of the excavation passed through weak siltstone/ claystone bedrock; although, portions of each tunnel approaching the 7th/Flower Station passed through fine-grained alluvium. Both tunnels were excavated with a digger shield. The project also included the excavation and lining of 6 cross passages, 2 communication rooms and a sump, all at tunnel grade between the two bores. A program of geotechnical instrumentation and building monitoring was performed to detect and document the response of the ground and adjacent structures and facilities to tunnel excavation. The instrumentation program was also intended to provide information that would permit implementation of remedial measures, when and as required, to prevent damage to structures, facilities and utilities along the tunnel alignment. An analogous approach is outlined for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The proposed modeling technique uses the following five basic (nonreducible) elements: H, Q, D, R and N. These elements are characterized by their pressure gain or loss, their air quantity and their pressure-vs. -quantity relationships, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine-ventilation networks.

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

Research programs conducted by Allis-Chalmers Corporation are showing that the most efficient energy use in crushers is achieved when the forces applied to particles undergoing breakage are increased. Laboratory bench scale tests have been developed to confirm this phenomena, which was first observed in the field using HYDROCOME crushers with automatic setting controls. A new testing machine is described and methods of maximizing such benefits are postulated. FOREWORD Allis-Chalmers Corporation was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1847 as the E. P. Allis Company, which had an initial interest in manufacturing components in the grinding of flour. As such, its roots were started in reducing material size, which is covered by the generic term, comminution.

The Yakobi nickel-copper deposit is located essentially at tidewater in the east-central part of Yakobi Island, about 16 1 airline km (100 airline miles) west of Juneau, and can be reached by float plane and boat from Juneau and Sitka. The fishing village of Pelican, population 400, is situated 14.5 km (9 miles) to the east. An unimproved road, approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) long, connects a dock site at Lisianski Strait with the main part of the deposit known as the Basin Area (Fig. I). Other mineral occurrences are known as the Takanis, Flapjack, and Beach Areas. Another smaller nickel-copper deposit is located about 32 km (20 miles) to the south on Western Chichagof Island and is known as the Mirror Harbor nickel-copper deposit. The original discovery of the Yakobi deposit was made by S.H.P. Vevelstad about 1920 and a 47.5-m (156-ft) long adit was driven on the southwest side of the deposit in the Basin Area. The deposit was examined by J.R. Van Fleet of Union Carbide in 1930 and by J.G. Fairchild in September 1931. Stanley and Yates of the International Nickel Co. of Canada (Inco) visited the property in August or September 1937. In 1942, the controlling interest in the deposit, covered by 124 unpatented claims, was said to be held by Vevelstad and associates

This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification, he potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification independent studies show this process to be 25Z cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the lost advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average pro¬duction rates of 5.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds.

"The topic of ground movements in Germany has been studied extensively in the past, especially in the field of active mines. The active hard coal mines were finally shut down in 2018 in Germany and lignite mining is expected to take place only until 2038. The so-called long-term liabilities of the mine operators in Germany include, among other things, the long-term guarantee of stability and thus the monitoring of ground motion.So far, the economic use of underground mining in Germany was mainly the supply of raw materials. In the future, the underground storage of compressed air, methane, or hydrogen will play an important role in renewable energy supply and climate change. Therefore, underground storage space will become more important and spatial planning is essential to ensure availability of safe underground openings for the various options of environmentally friendly energy storage.However, this renewed usage of underground openings may also bring new and sometimes unknown challenges of geomechanical influence. On the one hand, the aftermath of hard coal and lignite mining will be an increasing challenge in mining subsidence engineering. On the other hand, new possibilities due to underground spatial planning may lead to subsidence and/or heaving of the upper surface.INTRODUCTIONBoth hard coal and lignite have a long tradition in Germany. The Prosper Haniel mine in the Ruhr area was closed at the end of 2018 after 150 years, which signalled the end of hard coal production in Germany. Lignite mining still takes place in the Central German, Lausitz, and Rhineland districts. However, lignite mining in Germany is expected to be phased out gradually by 2038 (MDR, 2019). With the closure of these mines, however, mining damage is not over. The long-term consequences of mining, which extend far beyond the closure of the mines, are associated with the liability and responsibility of the individual mining companies. The so-called eternity burdens on the mining company continue to apply. In the field of lignite production, the discontinuation of dewatering and the resulting possible elevations of the surface will be a relevant topic for the future of mine surveying. The same applies to the hard coal mines, which are partially flooded in Germany and therefore require extensive monitoring of soil movements in the future.The discontinuation of energy from hard coal and lignite calls for a change in the energy mix. With the renewable energy revolution in Germany, the focus is on a sustainable and environmentally compatible climate and energy policy based on renewable energies. Sustainable use of the subsoil, both natural and anthropogenically produced cavities, will play an essential role in the objectives of this policy. For example, disused mine cavities can be used to store electricity from renewable energy sources. (Umwelt Bundesamt, 2018) These functions will again cause classical ground movements such as subsidence and uplift, but will also bring new challenges for the mine surveyor. Challenges can be underground cavity exploration in inaccessible areas or legal aspects of underground competition."

INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers. Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8- µm aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 µm diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.
