Six Sigma is a methodology that uses a structured and disciplined approach to improve process performance (higher throughput, better recovery, lower cost, shorter cycle time, etc.). Specially trained people called “black belts” lead and manage Six Sigma projects. Black belts, with assistance from their team, ensure that projects follow the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, implement and control) process phases. Timely completion of each project, with measurable deliverables, is key to Six Sigma’s significant financial success. Implementation of Six Sigma has been growing in recent years in a wide range of industries. The heavy mineral industry, like many other industries, could benefit from what Six Sigma has to offer. Specific Six Sigma project examples are included from DuPont’s Heavy Mineral Production Plant in Florida.

Cortez Gold Mines completed a feasibility study for a new openpit gold mine in north central Nevada. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing openpit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

KEECO has developed the Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology for the treatment of acidic, metal-laden waters. Utilizing a silica-based chemical formulation that entails chemisorption and micro-encapsulation of heavy metals in a permanent silica matrix, encapsulated particles settle quickly and are effectively isolated from the surrounding environment, producing a stable sludge that is characteristically non-hazardous. In a number of independently-verified pilot and full-scale applications (including the Bunker Hill Mine, Leviathan Mine, Wheal Jane Mine, and Meldon Quarry), SME has been proven highly effective. The technology has been featured in a number of mining publications and selected for innovative technology awards.

It has' been found that lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh Coal bed cause the subsidence coefficient to vary within the area of the subsidence trough. This precludes the use of European developed predictive models, which are based upon a constant subsidence coefficient. Regression analysis of the distribution of subsidence coefficients from 11 Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, longwall panel studies on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation. This equation has been incorporated into a BASIC computer program for use on a personal computer that allows users with no previous knowledge of the theory of subsidence to predict vertical movements over typical longwall panels in the Northern Appa1achian Coal Basin.

"The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. An investigation into the source mechanism of mining-induced seismic activity plays a vital role in understanding the various modes of failure observed in the underground deep-level South African mining environment. The seismic events data for this study was captured by the mine-wide seismic system operating at Kloof Gold Mine. This system comprises 40 4.5 Hz tri-axial geophones sampling at 6 kHz installed at locations that surround the stopes mining the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Main Reef (MR) and Kloof Reef (KR). A set of 103,753 mining-related seismic events (-3.0≤ ML ≤2.7) that occurred during 2017 and 2018 was selected for this study. The mining depth of these seismic events ranges from 1600 – 4200 m; most located close to stopes mining the VCR ore body. The main criteria used to select a subset of events for detailed analysis were the number of stations that recorded the seismic event and the azimuthal distribution of the sensors.

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.

In Part I of the work, gold and silver were shown to be efficiently extracted from Kupol samples using lead nitrate in a cyanide leach system. In Part II, a comparison of the technical and economic merits of a new technology called CELP (CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process) was made with the cyanidation/AVR(Acidification-Volatilization-Recycling) process using 8 metallurgical variability samples as well as a large composite sample which represented initial two years of Kupol mill feed. The composite sample had 33.4 g/t Au and 289 g/t Ag. The metallurgical demonstrated that the CELP produced very similar gold and silver leach extractions compared to the standard Cyanidation /AVR leach conditions at 1/2 the cyanide concentration (1000 ppm NaCN in CELP vs. 2000 ppm for cyanidation/AVR leach conditions). It was estimated that the total cost per ton, were approximately the same for the two technologies (total cost of the CELP with the use of Merrill-Crowe at $46.48/ton, with cyanidation/AVR at $46.13/ton). However, the implementation of the CELP would eliminate a capital expenditure of approximately $5 million. Eight variability samples used to confirm the previous results showed that on average the gold and silver leach extractions with the CELP and the feasibility leach conditions were very similar for gold extractions, but 4.6% higher for silver extractions compared to the conventional cyanidation. The decision was made to remove AVR cyanide recovery from the Kupol flowsheet and implement the CELP at Kupol. The ability to use conventional leach equipment with the CELP and simplify the flowsheet was also a factor, given the remote location of the Kupol Mine.

The possibility of drilling oil wells from underground locations is not a new concept. It bas not been cost effective for the oil industry in the past and therefore disregarded. Today's state of the art in tunneling and shaft sinking greatly improves the potential for this type of oil field development scheme. This report presents a plan for providing a aeries of drilling bases and the design of the drilling location. The design minimizes the amount of excavation needed to develop the oil field and maximizes the use of rapid excavation techniques.

Aquatic organisms are sensitive to free cyanide (HCN) though the presence of certain metals that can form stable complexes and thereby reducing both the amount of bioavailable cyanide. Recent work has suggested that consideration of HCN rather than total cyanide can provide the basis for water quality criteria. Cyanide is often present in complex effluents that affect speciation and bioavailability. We have developed a model to predict the speciation of cyanide in complex effluents and have shown that this model can predict the toxicity of metal-cyanide complexes in terms of HCN. This study evaluated available cyanide toxicity exposures with this model to assess the role of water chemistry (e.g., metal-cyanide interactions) on the observed. Toxicity endpoints based on total cyanide ranged over several orders of magnitude for a variety of metal-cyanide mixtures. However, predicted HCN concentrations among these same tests described the observed toxicity data to within a factor of 2. Aquatic toxicity can be well described using HCN though in certain metal-cyanide mixtures toxicity was jointly described by HCN and elevated levels of bioavailable metals. This work was performed in support of an industry-sponsored reassessment (Gensemer et al 2006) of the U.S. EPA water quality criteria for cyanide (EPA 1985) using free cyanide as the basis for the re-calculation. The work presented in this manuscript presents technical support for using free cyanide as the preferred basis for this recalculation.

The Samira Hill gold mine represents the first commercial gold project for the landlocked country of Niger in West Africa. It began production in October 2004 as the result of over 10 years of exploration and development work. There were several administrative, social and technical challenges that had to be overcome to realize the successful development of the project. The Samira mine is located on the geological structure known as the ‘Samira Horizon’ which is developing as a promising district for additional discoveries and other mine developments.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). Free energy of interaction between particles in water can be calculated if one knows the values of appropriate interfacial tensions, which in turn can be determined from the surface free energies of the particles involved. The latter can be determined using the Van Oss-Chaudhury-Good (OCG) equation. This method requires the measurement of contact angles of well-defined liquids on the surfaces of the particles of interest. In the present work, the contact angles were determined using heat of wetting, capillary rise, and thin-layer wicking methods. The results are compared, and the utility of the surface free energy data obtained from the contact angles are discussed.

Hard times continued to plague the industry when the calendar rolled over to 2000. During 1999, the United States economy had grown vigorously, capping the longest economic expansion in United States history. However, the mining industry was not so fortunate. Commodity prices remained in a slump in the “new-economy” that was fueled by excitement and speculation about the power of the Internet during the infancy of the Information Age. Much of the investment money that once went to mining and exploration was now headed to the world of virtual gold mines. SME President Donald E. Ranta implemented new technology into his plans for SME. His two major goals were new membership growth and to foster the establishment of the comprehensive Internet presence for the Society’s technical information. His strategic priorities included enhancing the quality and quantity of publications, programs, meetings and short courses. “The Internet is the vehicle that will advance the priorities,” he said.

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.

A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. The LCLS project at SLAC will allow new insights into material properties, chemical reactions and biological processes. The project includes half a mile of new underground construction. Excavation in weathered rock is by NATM, using AM 50 roadheaders. Construction began in 2006 and is expected to be completed in 2008. This paper details the construction of the tunnels and cavern on the project.

"Feather edging"- a major source of injury and fatal accidents in Australia, South Africa and USA, refers to a phenomenon where the roof, at the goaf edge, falls as a thin wafer of rock often suddenly, over-riding conventional timber breakerlines. It may run down and affect adversely a working bord at distances of 15 metres or more from the goaf edge. Feather edging typically occurs in relatively massive, strong roof strata such as sandstone or conglomerate. This paper presents the results of a mine trial where a concentrated row of fully grouted bolts were able to resist the feather edging in the first comprehensive, monitored trial in an Australian pillar ('total') extraction coal mine.
