The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10th November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly-panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

"Copper–cobalt extraction is a reagent-intensive process resulting in acid consumption greatly contributing towards production costs, which in the current market conditions curtail profitability. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have become an attractive approach in the mining and minerals industry for product concentration and reagent recovery based on the ability of the membrane to separate monovalent ions from divalent ions. NF membranes can selectively separate acids from metals and salts allowing acid to be recycled as well as the concentration and purification of product streams. Membrane technology in the field of copper–cobalt processing focusses on the concentration of Cu2+ and Co2+ in the pregnant leach solution, recovery of acid from waste streams to neutralization, recovery of valuable metals from waste ponds and process water recovery. This paper aims to provide insight into the potential applications of NF membranes in copper–cobalt processing circuits as well as a brief overview of the effects of process conditions on membrane performance and process development. INTRODUCTION The copper–cobalt industry commonly uses inorganic acids, such as sulfuric acid, in large quantities for primary leaching of copper–cobalt oxide ores and releaching during product purification (Stuurman et al., 2014). This results in numerous acidic intermediate streams containing high metal concentrations and acidic waste streams with low metal concentrations. Acid consumption typically accounts for 10–15% of the operating costs of mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia (Acid Plant Database, 2015). Due to remote mine locations, poorly maintained roads and cross-border conflict, the cost of sulphuric acid can range between USD 300 and 400 per ton. The pivotal role of acid in the copper–cobalt extraction process has driven many mines to build sulphuric acid plants on site to ensure a reliable acid supply, however elemental sulphur still needs to be imported which faces similar logistical challenges and contributes towards operating costs."

We have conducted a stress analysis of overcoring stress measurements undertaken at the Zedex Test Site (ZTS) in the Äspö HRL, Sweden. Two different types of overcoring cells have been used at the site: the 9-gauge Borre Probe (CSIR-type) and the 12-gauge CSIRO HI cell. Inversion programs based on the least-squares criterion were developed and calibrated. The primary and secondary stress field in the ZTS were back-calculated using strain data from individual cells as well as from combining data from both cells. We propose that the combination of strain data from the two cells significantly improves the determination of the stress field. A striking result is the good agreement between the re-analysed overcoring data and the existing hydraulic fracturing data. The deviations for the horizontal stresses between the re-analyzed overcoring data and the existing hydraulic fracturing data are approximately 3 MPa. The deviation in the orientation of maximum horizontal stress is approximately 10-20°. Nous avons analysé les résultats de mesures de contrainte par surcarottage réalisées sur le site Zedex, du laboratoire souterrain HRL d’Aspö, en suède. Deux types de cellule de mesure ont été utilisés sur ce site : la cellule à 9 jauges (du type CSIR) et la cellule à 12 jauges (du type CSIRO HI). Un programme d’inversion mettant en œuvre une norme par moindres carrés a été développé et validé. Les champs de contrainte primaires et secondaires du site Zedex ont été évalués d’une part en considérant chaque mesure isolément, d’autre part en intégrant l’ensemble des données de déformation dans une inversion unique. Nos résultats suggèrent que l‘association des diverses mesures dans une intégration unique améliore nettement la détermination du champ de contrainte. Un résultat intéressant est le bon accord entre ces nouveaux résultats et les résultats des mesures par fracturation hydraulique. Les écarts sur l’amplitude des contraintes horizontales est de l’ordre de 3 Mpa, les écarts sur les orientations de l’ordre de 10-20°. Auf dem Zedex Test Gelände im Äspö Festgesteinslabor (HRL) wurde eine Spannungsanalyse mittels Overcoring Spannungsmessungen durchgeführt. Hierzu wurden zwei verschiedene Methoden verwendet: das 9-kanal Borre Gerät (CSIR- Ausführung) und die 12-Kanal CSIRO HI Zelle. Inversionsprogramme, die auf dem “least-squares”- Kriterium basieren, wurden entwickelt und kalibriert. Das primäre und sekundäre Spannungsfeld des Zedex Test Geländes wurde sowohl aus Verformungsdaten individueller Zellen als auch aus Kombination beider Zellen ermittelt. Wir nehmen an, daß die Kombination der Messergebnisse beider Geräte die Bestimmung des Spannungsfeldes signifikant verbessert. Überzeugender Beweis hierfür ist die gute Übereinstimmung der überprüften Overcoring Daten und Ergebnisse aus existierenden Hydraulic Fracturing Versuchen. Die Abweichungen der horizontalen Spannungen aus beiden Datensätzen ist etwa 3 MPa und Abweichungen der Orientierung der größten Horizontalspannung liegen bei etwa 10-20°.

The reducibility of three different manganese ores with coke was studied. The three ores were reduced to different extents under the same experimental conditions. The investigations showed that in the temperature range of 900-1000 ×C, Fe2O3 in the ore was reduced to metallic iron. MnO2 was reduced to Mn3O4 in all cases except one in which it was reduced to Mn2O3. The kinetics of reduction was controlled by different mechanisms in the different ores. Temperature had a significant influence on the reducibility of the ores.

In this study, reduction behaviours of Turkish chromite concentrate (48 % Cr2O3, 13.30 % FeO, 18.33 % MgO, 12.37 % Al2O3, 5.76 % SiO2) and nickel oxide by Fe-C alloy in graphite crucible were investigated. In the first stage of experiments, steel scraps were melted in graphite crucibles and were saturated with carbon at 1600 °C and 30 min. In the second stage, mixtures of different amount of chromite concentrate, nickel oxide and flux additives (CaO,SiO2 and CaF2) were charged into the graphite crucible containing the Fe-C alloy and heated to 1600 °C for different reduction times (0-180 min) under argon gas. The highest Cr and Ni con-tents in alloys were found as 11.41 and 14.37 % and the highest Cr and Ni recoveries were found as 88 and94 %, respectively at 180 min.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, platinum Mortimer Smelter is one of the three smelting operations in the Anglo Platinum Group. It is located in the Limpopo Province, approximately 100 km north of Rustenburg, and approximately 15 km west of Northam. The smelter operation is the smallest of the three smelting operations in the group, with a smelting capacity of 170 kt/annum. The operation consists of a Larox filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, a modified Elkem / Hatch 19.5 MVA furnace, and a 60 t/h matte crushing plant. The operation does not convert its furnace matte, and hence the final sulphide rich matte is transported to and processed further at the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) within the Waterval Smelter Complex in Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transported to a slag dump.

This paper presents computations of the electric field inside a furnace. We first look at the effect of contact between two coke particles from an electrical point of view. We give values for the amount of contact resistance in the total resistance of the system formed by the two coke particles. We show that the effect of contact resistance decreases rapidly with increasing contact area. We then look at the complete electric field inside a full scale furnace. The aim is to evaluate the amount of current that short-cuts the metal bath for different vertical positions of the electrodes. We show that electrodes high above the metal bath are undesirable since they offer a larger surface of conductive charge materials where current can flow through. On the other hand, deeper electrodes force the current to go the whole way down to the metal bath. Ohmic heating along this path ensures a high temperature of coke and slag that are beneficial for metal recovery.

A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Stoffgesetz vorgeschlagen um hydromechanisches Kluftverhalten numerisch zu Modellieren. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d'interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l'applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. Les résultats montrent la bonne application du modèle mathématique et le rôle hydraulique fondamental joué par les fractures.

The exploitation of stone (trachyte) at the ?Srebro? open pit mine, located on the northern slopes of the Fru?ka Gora National Park (Serbia) central area begun in 1964. Stone exploitation in this locality does not endanger the environment in an ecological sense, does not pose a threat to plants and animals, and apart from the terrain configuration changes, it did not leave behind permanent consequences to the environment. Projects for permanent cessation of mining operations and for land reclamation and spatial arrangement were completed in these circumstances. The paper gives a short review of the condition at the open pit mine; furthermore, the key problems and basic demands are presented, together with a concept of technical and biological land reclamation and the spatial arrangement of the mining complex. The mining industry is facing a serious skills resource shortage, growing commodity demand and cyclical prices. This makes focus and allocation of resources in the early stages of project development very important. To assist with these six key elements in the project prioritization process is proposed, namely: 1) Define the project vision, objectives and business case, 2) Determine the potential show stoppers, 3) Determine the key value drivers, 4) Track changes and provide regular feedback, 5) Evaluate the alternatives and, 6) Ensure proper gate management governance at the decision point. Incorporating these elements in the project development process will assist in resource allocation and focus on the high value aspects of projects and alternatives during the early stages of the project development lifecycle. The potential application of fluidized beds in several sectors of the ferroalloy industry is promising. They can be used in the direct reduction of iron ores to produce a feed for steelmaking, in the reduction of manganese dioxide to produce a lesser oxide for feeding to smelters, in the preheating of chromite for the production of ferrochrome, and in the calcining and pre-reduction of nickel laterites for the production of ferronickel. This paper discusses the potential of fluidized beds in theses processes and highlights the advantages of the technology over other technologies, such as rotary kilns. Two primary advantages?(1) that fluidized beds can treat fine materials and (2) that fluidized beds can be integrated with smelters in a way that allows for more efficient use of energy?may well see the technology gain prominence as more deposits of lower grade are mined and industries strive to use their resources more efficiently. In discussing the potential of the technology in the ferroalloy industry, this paper focuses on the application of fluidized beds in the smelting of chromite, nickel laterites, and manganese ores. Central to the successful operation of this technology is a knowledge of how particle properties influence the behaviour and design of fluidized beds.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. Generally, monitoring of refractory furnace linings is of interest to the metallurgical industry. The main issues are to control wear of the furnace lining and break out of molten metal. Penetration of molten metal through the lining can cause considerable damage to equipment in the vicinity of the furnace and endanger operators. Rebuilding of a furnace lining is expensive, mainly because it stops production, but also because the lining materials are expensive. Here, two methods for monitoring the lining of a smelting furnace are presented. The methods are based on monitoring of the temperature distribution in the lining, more specific monitoring an isotherm in the lining. One method is based on the assumption of unidirectional heat flow locally, reducing the problem to a set of one-dimensional heat conduction problems. The other method is based on inverse heat conduction. In this context inverse heat conduction means estimating the wear from temperature measurements using mathematical optimization techniques. The study is based on the ilmenite smelting furnace at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS. Some results from real temperature measurements and real observations from the ilmenite smelting furnaces is presented.

A physical modelling study has been carried out to simulate the slag-metal dispersion induced by a high-strength bottom gas injection. Water and kerosene were utilized to simulate metal and slag respectively. A water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) vessel was used with three different nozzle orientations, namely, off-centre, triangular off-centre and centre. The gas flow rates changed from 0.00599m3/sec to 0.01081m3/sec. Height of heavy and light phases was kept fixed at 0.23 m and 0.02 m respectively. The dispersed phase holdup was determined at various axial and radial distances, gas flow rates, and tuyere configurations. The observations revealed that at a fixed gas injection rate, as the vertical distance increased in the centerline, straight off-centre orientation resulted in greater dispersed phase hold up values than those of the centre configuration and the triangular off-centre orientation. The dispersed phase holdup was found to increase with gas injection rate and decreased with axial distance. The variation of the dispersed phase hold up with the dimensionless axial distance and the gas injection rate was correlated by using the Modified Froude Number. The experimental values of the dispersed phase holdup were found to be in good agreement with the correlated values obtained from the modelling equations. The findings of the present study may be utilized in the ferroalloy refining vessels in terms of designing tuyere locations for optimum processing conditions.

By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 9 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, whereupon it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and Platinum Group Metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

In association with this, use of process optimization controllers enables to achieve specialised functionalities of the submerged arc furnaces like material management, lining management, electrode management, power management, overall production management etc.

In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

In the submerged arc production of ferromanganese, sillicomanganese and ferrochromium, the coke bed characteristics play an important role. The basic mechanisms of electric current conduction in the coke be dare not yet fully understood, but important parameters are the material resistivity of coke and the contact resistance between the coke particles. Preliminary tests indicate that the contact resistance is of great importance to the bulk resistance of the coke bed. An apparatus measuring the material resistivity and contact resistance of carbon materials has been developed. Both graphite and industrial coke have been tested. The material resistivity tests were performed on single particles to ensure that the effects of pores and cracks were included and the contact resistances were excluded. Two geometries were tested to obtain the contribution of the contact resistance to the total resistance of two connecting particles. The tests were performed in an inert atmosphere at temperatures and current levels found in industrial submerged arc furnaces. The results show that the method has a satisfactory reproducibility. It was found that the contact resistance is about 10 times higher than the resistance of the material when two particles are in perfect contact and that the resistivity of SSAB coke is more than 10 times higher than that of the graphite at room temperature, but with increasing temperature the difference decreases. For SSAB coke the general trend is that both the resistivity and the contact resistance decrease with increasing temperature.
