The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

"Two shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index are compared for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. The first procedure is based on a batch milling test while the second procedure is based on a limited locked-cycle test. Both procedures were conducted using a standard Bond test mill. INTRODUCTION The Bond ball work index is widely used in the field of minerals processing as an indicator of ore grindability. The work index is determined by means of a locked-cycle test procedure that typically requires seven to eight cycles to stabilise at a re-circulating load of 250%. A typical test requires between three to four kilogram of ore sample and around eight hours of operator time. For geometallurgical test work applications, where a large number of variability samples are to be tested, it would be highly beneficial to use a test procedure that requires less sample mass and operator time. Certain test work laboratories, for example SGS and JK Tech, are already offering various types of shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index. This paper discusses a comparison of two shortened test procedures that were evaluated for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. EXPERIMENTAL Test Procedure 1 – Batch Milling The first test procedure is derived from a batch milling approach proposed by the University of Hacettepe (Aksani, 2000). Some modifications were, however, made to the data analysis method from that originally proposed. During this test procedure, a 700 mL volume of sample is milled in a standard Bond test mill for a pre-determined number of revolutions. The feed and product particle size distributions are measured for each test. These results are then used to back-calculate a cumulative breakage rate parameter (k) for each particle size, according to the following formula:"

"A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

The Oyu Tolgoi porphyry gold and copper project is located in the south Gobi region of Mongolia. The Ivanhoe Mines project has the potential to become a long-life copper and gold producer that could rank among the largest in the world. There are five deposits which cover a strike length in excess of 6.5 km, from south to north they are named South Oyu, Southwest Oyu, Central Oyu, Hugo South and Hugo North. The first three, collectively known as the Southern Oyu deposits, are planned to be mined by open pits, whilst extraction of the deeper Hugo deposits is planned using block caving techniques. The pits will have diameters of approximately 1000m and a maximum depth of 550m. The geological environment consists of a sequence of porphyritic augite basalt, dacitic tuffs and sedimentary rocks that have been intruded by several generations of porphyritic quartz monzodiorite and numerous post mineralization dykes. Several major faults cut through the southern deposits juxtaposing the relative position of the stratigraphy. The geotechnical investigation for the Oyu Tolgoi Open Pits was conducted in three distinct phases of increasing complexity: scoping study; advanced scoping study and feasibility study. Each phase consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis designed to progressively develop 3D geotechnical domaining for the empirical, structural and numerical evaluations. The development of the geotechnical design parameters for these green fields open pits posed many technical challenges, brought about by the conditions associated with a lithologically and structurally complex environment. The design work focused on the optimization of the pit geometry to conform to equipment selection and blasting characteristics. Limiting bench stack heights were derived from the influence of major structures. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps and geotechnical berms. This paper describes each of these aspects and the methodology used to address the integration of the geotechnical characteristics with the mining environment.

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. Les valeurs extrêmes de vélocités maximales ont été obtenues pour les cas où la zone de face se trouve à l’intérieur du rayon de la source. Eine Gesamtanzahl von 39 Aufstellungsorten in den Schichtabbauorten vom Carbon Leader und Ventersdorp Contact Reef wurden untersucht. Partikelspitzengeschwindigkeiten mit Werten bis zu 3 m/s wurden an einigen Standorten aufgezeichnet Die an der Oberfläche des Grubenraumes aufgezeichneten Daten wurden mit jenen Daten verglichen, die vom seismischen Netzwerk der Grube notiert wurden, um die örtliche Reaktion des Standortes zu bestimmen. Die maximale Standortreaktion wurde für Ursprungsradien von zwischen 5 m und 30 m erhalten und Ereignissen die sich innerhalb von 200 m vom Standort befanden. Die extremen Werte der Partikelhöchstgeschwindigkeiten wurdenin jenen Fällen erreicht wo sich der Abbaubereich innerhalb des Ursprungsradiuses befand.

For some time spirals have been the process equipment chosen to recover metal in the size range 0.15 to 3mm from ferrochrome and silico/ferro manganese slags. Recoveries of metal obtained using spirals are usually about 70%. Spirals are also difficult to control. By combining a novel gate on the Apic pneumatic fines jig with the recently developed Apic classifier, metal recoveries of 76% and grades of over 90% have been obtained for FeCr and SiMn slags in the size range 0.15 to 3 mm. The paper compares classifier operating performance and costs with those spirals for FeCr and SiMn metal recovery from slags. The classifier technology can also be applied to chromite and iron ores and coal fines.

Cato Ridge Alloys (CRA) is a joint venture company between Assmang of South Africa, Mizushima Ferro Alloy Company (MZK) and Sumitomo Corporation from Japan. Negotiations for the formation of the company started in 1992 with the joint venture agreement signed on the 19th September 1996. MZK was to supply the technical know how for the production of Medium and Low Carbon FeMn while Assmang was to manage the day to day activities of the company. Sumitomo Corporation was to act as facilitator between Assmang and MZK and, together with Ore and Metal are responsible for the marketing of the refined products. The conceptual design of the plant started in December 1996 and the first charge of molten high carbon ferromanganese metal was charged on the 19th January 1998. Problems experienced during the initial startup period were addressed resulting in substantial operational improvements. A build-up in the stock of fine metal was addressed through the development of a process to remelt the fine metal, the development of a market for fine metal and the upgrading of the crushing and screening plant to reduce the generation of fine metal. The mass yield from High Carbon Ferromanganese to Refined Ferromanganese was increased through the implementation of statistical process control, changes to the blowing patterns and the development of a sampling device for taking samples during the process. Converter refractory consumption was reduced. This was achieved on the converter by improving the cooling of the converters with the installation of cooling fans and cooling fins. The heating schedule of the converters was changed for improved refractory life. Production schedules were modified to allow cooling of the refractory between low carbon erromanganese charges. Additional changes made to improve operations were: ? Changing from mehanite casting trays to metal fines beds. ? Installation of sonic horns in the baghouse to prevent the bridging of dust. ? Improved welding on the lance tips.

The current state of the South African mining industry is briefly reviewed from the point of view of an engineer not schooled in the finer details of predictive economics. Based on the assumption that current world exploration targets are indicative of which commodities the world will want in the future, it is concluded that the South African mining industry will continue to be viable and growing well into the future. South Africa holds the minerals the world wants and needs, and as long as the world has people, the demand for those, including gold, will continue to grow. There still is a growing demand for vanity commodities' and even the demand for platinum as a jewellery material displays significant growth. Mine safety still needs to improve, but significant improvement has already been made although the industry is not always acknowledged for the effort in this field. The safety target set for 2013 is within reach but will require sustained effort. The physical mining conditions for the main revenue earners, coal, platinum, and gold, will change substantially in the near future. Research in mining has declined alarmingly and it is urgently necessary for that to be revitalized to generate the knowledge that will be required. In order to streamline the transfer of knowledge to the mining engineers of the future, research needs to be conducted with the full involvement of the universities. It will also be necessary for the universities to continually review curricula to incorporate the latest knowledge and to embark on a campaign of knowledge transfer to the older generation of mining engineers. The mining industry is well supported by the universities, who have done their duty with regard to societal transformation, and the universities are in turn supported by the industry through vehicles like the METE Industry is also strongly supported by a number of professional and vocational societies. The SAIMM will continue to play its vital role as the meeting point of the mining technical sciences, and will continue to disseminate knowledge via the journal, schools, and conferences. In the future, it will review its modus operandi to support the needs of growing membership in the remote branches. It will enter the research arena in an appropriate manner and give effect to the developing integration of mining and society. The most important threat to the future of the mining industry is the recurrent mention of nationalization. While interaction between the mining industry and political and economic development of South Africa has always been characteristic, the current debate is emotional more than rational, and engineers are not well equipped to participate. This matter needs to be finalized before it becomes a popular force that politicians cannot control.

In this study, the influences of rock mass properties on the blasting performance in open cast mines are investigated. To this end, discontinuity spacings and discontinuity orientations are measured and full scale blasts with various designs are observed in open cast mines of Aegean Lignite (ELI) and Bursa Lignite (BLI) Establishments belonging to Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI). For each blast, blasting cost is calculated, and particle size distribution representing the fragmentation of muckpile is determined by means of Split-Desktop software using image processing. 50%(K50), 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values are used in the determination of blasting performance according to rock mass properties. The relationships between orientation angle, which is the acute angle between the strikes of slope face and major discontinuity, and 50%(K50) and 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values and also blasting cost are investigated in order to analyse the influences of major discontinuity orientation on fragmentation and blasting cost. Furthermore, the relationships between discontinuity modal spacing (or block size index) and 50%(K50) and 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values and also blasting cost are investigated in order to analyse the influences of discontinuity spacing on fragmentation and blasting cost. In this paper, the trends observed in these relationships are discussed and the importance of it in mining is commented. Dans ce travail, Il a été traite les influences des qualites des rocheux massif sur les performances des abattages de l’excavation a ciel ouvert. Dans ce cas, les excavations a ciel ouvert dans les Entreprises Lignite d’Aegean et de Bursa qui appartient a La Societe Charbon de la Turquie; Il a été mesuré le trou du discontinuite et l’orientation du discontinuite et aussi, Il a été observé les abattages qui sont pareilles aux critaires exactes. Pour chaque abattages, Il a été fait le control des expences et la distribution du particle au dimension du pile qui a été deja abatté, a été trouve en utilisant le Software du Split-Desktop. Pour determiner les influences des qualites des rocheux massif sur les performances des abattages, Il a été utilisé K50, K80, et le plus grand valeurs des dimensions. Aussi pour determiner l’influence sur l’orientation du discontinuite majeur de la fragmentation et les expences de l’abattage, Il a été observé les relations entre l’angle de l’orientation ( C’est l’acutage entre la direction du banquette front et la direction du discontinuite majeur ) et les plus grand valeurs des dimensions et les expences de l’abattage. Plus, pour determiner des influences du trou du discontinuite sur l’abattage et la fragmentation; Il a été observé la relation entre l’index de la dimension du block et K50, K80 et les plus grand valeurs des dimensions et aussi les expences de l’abattage. Pour conclure; on peut dire que dans cette presentation, apres la discusssion des sujets consideres ces relations, Il a été souligné l’importances de ces relations dans la domain de la Minéralogie. In dieser Studie wurden die Einflüsse von Gesteinsmasse Eigenschaften auf die Sprengleistung in Tagebau Bergwerken untersucht. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Diskontinuität Abstände und Diskontinuität Orientierungen gemessen und Sprengungen im Originalmaßstab mit verschiedenen Anordnungen in Tagebau Bergwerken der Ägäischen Braunkohle (ELI) und Bursa Braunkohle (BLI) Betrieben, die zu der Türkischen Kohlegesellschaft (TKI) zugehörig sind, beobachtet. Für jede Sprengung wurden die Sprengkosten berechnet und die Teilchengrößenverteilung zur Darstellung der Aufteilung von Haufwerk ist durch Mittel von Teilbelegungssoftware, das Bildverarbeitung verwendet, bestimmt worden. 50% (K50), 80% (K80) durchlaufende Größen und Spitzengröße Werte wurden zur Bestimmung von Sprengleistung geordnet nach Gesteinsmasse Eigenschaften benutzt. An experimental study has been performed to investigate the behaviour and separation of inclusions at the interface between steel and slag. The study has been limited to liquid inclusions because they can be a potential problem in transient situations such as ladle changes in continuous casting of steel. Model experiments with water and silicon oils have been carried out to study the kinetics of separation of simulated inclusions at an interface. The properties of the inclusions and the slags have been varied by using different oils with different viscosities, densities and surface tensions. The effect of temperature of the liquids has also been examined. Measurements of the terminal velocity, rest time and the behaviour of the liquid inclusions at the interface have been recorded using a video camera. It has been found that the inclusions reach their terminal velocity early in the vessel and the experimental velocities differ somewhat from the values evaluated using ?intermediate law?. The results from the experiments have shown that the size of the inclusions has no appreciable influence on the rest time. Droplets of AK50 oil have been found to have considerably long rest time. A water film surrounding the droplet has been expected to be the main reason for the long rest time. The present study has also shown that the viscosity of the oil has certain effect on the rest time, but only to some extent, since viscosity has double functions. A higher viscosity provides higher resistance to the droplet entering the oil phase leading to longer rest time and at the same time damps the lateral movement of the droplet along the interface, leading to easier stabilization and shorter rest time. On the other hand, a high viscosity of the oil phase results in slow dissolution process. It has been concluded that a meaningful model of inclusion separation at the metal-slag interface must take the interfacial phenomena into consideration. Three electric arc furnaces (EAFs) were constructed by Union Carbide at Tubatse Ferrochrome (TFC) in1975. This plant was expanded to four furnaces at the East Plant in 1985 and the gas cleaning system was enlarged without taking flow dynamics into consideration. In order to improve competitiveness, TFC has increased furnace capacity, partially substituted coal for coke, and changed the charge mix. These changes increase the heat and dust load into the air pollution control (APC) system. TFC embarked on a project to improve the APC capacity by: ?Quantifying the required off-gas capacity ?Optimising the aerodynamic flow through the system by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) ?Converting the old Brandt Koyo top entry baghouses to bottom entry ?Upgrading the cleaning system ?Installing Gore-tex® ePTFE membrane filter bags The estimation of required off-gas capacity is traditionally done by rule-of-thumb methods such as specific extraction. A more elegant evaluation method was developed for simulating the effects of changes in charge mix on the furnace reaction gas volume and the APC system. Reaction gases are calculated by modelling the reactions taking place in the furnace and off-gas volumes are compared to both fan and baghouse capacity. This enables identification of bottle-necks in the off-gas system. CFD techniques were utilized to evaluate geometric imbalances and propose solutions to ensure optimal use of off-gas capacity. The system modifications were completed over several months and the modified equipment went into service in May2006.

"The Zambian Copper mining industry as we know it today has its genesis from early in the 20th century in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production going from zero to a peak of 769 000 tons of copper in 1969. At the same time, the industry created jobs to the extent that in 1972 the industry had over 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level at the dawn of the 21st century in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 tons. In terms of jobs, an average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000. Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and investments of over USD 12 billion, the industry production levels increased year- on-year to reach a peak of 763 000 tons in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000. This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support to other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing and makes suggestions on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Research into the safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa highlighted that future practices will have to consider pertinent risks associated with this least safe of all underground coal mining methods conducted in South Africa. To this end, a computer-based program called A-PEP (Analysis for Pillar Extraction Potential) was developed to assess three aspects of this mining practice, viz. risks associated with the physical attributes, operational risk attributes and economic attributes. This intelligent tool can thus be used when planning to conduct underground pillar extraction to ensure that all pertinent risk elements and legislative requirements are considered to conduct this mining method safely before a submission is made to the Department of Minerals and Energy. Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. Very limited investment in the sector (even for the expansion of existing smelters) has been experienced over many years, despite the fact that about 95% of the world?s chrome ore resources are in the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The Bushveld has a greater quantity but a lower grade than the Great Dyke. A ten per cent increase in Zimbabwean ferrochromium production has been recorded in the past ten years, showing an almost stagnant capacity investment.

This paper discusses the current approaches to modelling the DMS cyclone within the De Beers group. Current efforts are split into short term value-adding process understanding and longer term semi-fundamental analysis of separation mechanisms. To date, the basic applied approach has yielded significant value to the group, enabling operators to focus on simple diagnostic measures to control their process. The more involved modelling approach has given rise to a new understanding of the separation field, in particular that the high density gradients within a cyclone are highly localised, indicating that separation of medium to heavy density material takes place low in the cone. The model has proven to be conceptually robust, but still requires further development and validation to become a complete modelling and simulation tool for De Beers.

"From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

I had the good fortune to attend the above Conference which was held in Kanpur, India, on 11-15 December, 1995. The Conference was held in honour of Professor P.C. Kapur of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Professor Kapur was one of the early students of legendary teacher and researcher of mineral beneficiation, Professor Doug Fuerstenau of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. I have attended my fair share of international conferences and this one certainly rated at the top of the list on several counts. With an open-hearted hospitality which one might almost take for granted once you have spent some time in India, the organizers of the Conference looked after every need of their guests, including breakfast and transport to and from the conference centre, wonderful traditional lunches and dinners and outstanding entertainment in the evenings. The papers were generally of a high standard, and debate flowed enthusiastically and freely. Several international guests delivered seminal papers in their fields as discussed below.
