The rock mass properties such as deformability and permeability are highly dependent on the existence of cracks. The Ratio of Crack Opening Dependency (RCOD) was proposed as a new index to evaluate the deformability of infinite jointed rock mass. The RCOD is defined as the ratio of total amount of crack opening and the total deformation of jointed rock mass. The theoretical relation between the RCOD and the effective compliance of jointed rock mass is discussed and confirmed through two-dimensional numerical analysis by the SC-DDM, together with the applicability to the rock engineering. Le rapport de dépendance d'ouverture des fissures a été proposé comme un nouvel index d'évaluation de la déformabilité de masse rocheuse à assemblage infini. Das Verhältnis der Riss-Öffnungsabhängigkeit (RCOD) wurde als neuer Index der Verformbargkeit von infinit zerklüfteter Felsmasse vorgeschlagen. Der RCOD wird als Verhältnis der Gesamtmenge der Rissöffnungen und der Gesamtverformung der zerklüfteten Felsmasse definiert. Die theoretische Beziehung zwischen RCOD und der effektiven Verformbarkeit von zerklüfteter Felsmasse wird diskutiert und durch zweidimensionale numerische Analyse mit SC-DDM bestätigt, zusammen mit der Anwendbarkeit auf Bergbautechnik.

The recent combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) can provide considerable insight into the performance of flotation cells. One area of interest from a fundamental equipment design perspective has been the influence of flotation cell size and the inflow rate on the metallurgical performance of the cell. One of the specific design objectives when increasing the size of flotation cells, or increasing the feed flow to the flotation cell, is to ensure that the feed stream flowing into the cell does not have an opportunity to bypass the mechanism. This paper describes the initial modeling efforts to quantify the inter-relationship of cell size, inflow rates, and feed and discharge box placement, on the retention time distribution of solids in the flotation cell, and the fraction of particles that bypass the mechanism on a size by size basis.

Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

Risk lies at the heart of all mining and nowhere more so than in pit slope design. Mining is principally about two areas of risk; safety and economics. This paper addresses the main elements of pit slope design and presents a view of the state of the art in terms of safety, design, prediction of performance, success and pit slope management. There has been a recent trend for serious injury and fatalities due to stability in open pit mines. The causes and contributing factors are analysed in relation to geotechnical knowledge, pit slope design and management. Currently there is no standard classification system for mine slope designs and it is considered doubtful if a universal system is possible. Designs are usually formulated in accordance with many different methodologies, various engineering principals and a number of different philosophical approaches, with results often presented in terms of Factors of Safety or Probabilities of Failure. However wide experience has demonstrated that even with apparently detailed engineering investigation and analysis at Feasibility Level, at the Operating Stage mine slope angles are regularly subject to large changes. The general experience is that these changes are ± 5° and 16° overall, which is considerably outside the accepted order of accuracy. For large deep mines these are huge changes and represent significant risks to the operations. The current state of practice in pit slope design is examined for two stages, feasibility and operating.

Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) is in the process of developing an expansion of their Damang Open Pit gold mine in Ghana. AGL acquired the Damang mine in January 2002, with SRK participating in the geotechnical investigation and design for the project since 2001. A deep resource drilling program, completed during 2004, intersected an extension of the orebody below the then planned final pit floor. A feasibility study has been completed to determine the economic extraction of this deep ore with an expanded pit shell. The Damang mine is in a stockwork sulphide deposit at the culmination of the Damang anticline. The deposit occurs as hydrothermal mineralisation associated with dominantly east dipping thrusts and sub-horizontal quartz veins. Primary gold mineralisation also occurs in the conglomerates of the Tarkwaian Formation. The geological units consist of steep easterly dipping dolerite, sandstone, siltstone and phyllite beds, with the weathering profile comprising saprolites overlying a relatively thin joint oxidized horizon. It is planned to deepen the current open pit to a final depth of up to 270 m, primarily by the development of a push-back of the eastern and western walls. The edge of the Eastern Tailings Storage Facility (ETSF) is currently located within 80 to 100 m of the crest of the existing pit. The geotechnical design focused on the optimization of the bench face angle and finally recommended a ?Steep Slope Strategy?, involving 24m high near vertical benches. Limiting bench stack heights of 96m at a maximum of 66° were derived from the influence of major structures and the variation in rock mass conditions. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps. One of the main design challenges was to optimise the standoff distance between the final pit crest and the ETSF. This process had to consider maximum access to the resource without undue influence on or from the nearby tailings dam. A planned increase to the height of the dam wall was an additional factor in the design. Dewatering of the pit walls was also a major consideration in this tropical environment.

Safety nets have been used selectively in several South African mines over the years. Recently, however, an increased emphasis on mine safety has seen a resurgence of their utilization underground. This renewed interest has, however, also raised questions about the design and performance of these nets and their practical applications underground; these are the subjects of this paper. Generally, mine safety nets are used to protect personnel from falling rock in temporarily supported development ends, tunnels, ASGs and stopes. These diverse applications each require specific net designs, resulting in a wide product range. As a rule, however, mine safety nets need to carry specified static or dynamic loads with the least possible deformation. Because of the application-specific characteristics of mine safety nets, there is no South African national standard for them. Consequently, neither the SABS, nor the CSIR, performs standard tests on these components. In 2007, therefore, SIMRAC made available their Savuka facility for the testing of mine safety nets; the Savuka drop test became the accepted industry test standard for mine safety nets. From late 2007 to mid 2009, Norsenet, in collaboration with SRK Consulting, the designated operators of the site, conducted approximately 200 tests, which formed the core of Norsenet's database of safety net performance under various loading conditions. The test specimens comprised a wide range of net materials and config¬urations; the materials included: high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, as well as a blend of polyester and polypropylene used primarily for reinforcement ropes. Net configurations encompassed the following parameters: net type, i.e., knotted nets or sewn nets; net strand type, i.e., braids, twines, or webbing; strand size; mesh size; mesh orientation, i.e., parallel or oblique to the net edge; net edge reinforcement, i.e., knotted, tied, with or without reinforcement ropes; internal reinforcement ropes, i.e., diagonal ropes and/or orthogonal ropes; as well as net attachment options, including loops and chainlinks. From the number of variables listed above, and the limited number of tests available, it can be appreciated that the findings of the test series required careful scrutiny. Nevertheless, principal performance factors clearly emerged: besides the obvious net mesh variables, such as net strand material, strand diameter and mesh size, it was the configuration of the reinforcement ropes and their attachment to the net panel which had the strongest influence on net performance. All the structural elements of a safety net need to work together to transfer the imposed load from the net panel, through the reinforcement ropes, to the net attachment points. In this load transference chain, the weakest link limits the strength of the structure. From this development work, Norsenet has gained valuable expertise to custom-design and manufacture nets to clients' specifications. The examples presented in the paper will also show the experience acquired in the installation of nets underground. Future work will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art net testing facility at Norsenet's factory in Vredenburg.. The additive property of dispersion variances was found experimentally by D.G. Krige using data from the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand. In this property, called ?Krige?s relationship?, the dispersion of a small unit, v, within the deposit is equal to the sum of the dispersion of v within a bigger unit, V, and the dispersion of these units, V, within the deposit, D. It is known that the variance of the grades decreases as the support increases, the so-called volume-variance relationship. To analyse volume-variance and Krige?s relationship, the methodology herein proposed combines blending piles and geostatistical simulation to simulate the in situ and the pile grade variability. Variability reduction in large piles is based on the volume-variance relationship, i.e. the larger the support, the smaller the variability (assuming perfect mix). Based on a pre-defined mining sequence to select the blocks that will form each pile for each simulated block model, the statistical fluctuation of the grades derived from real piles can be simulated. Using this methodology, one can evaluate within a certain time period the expected grade variability for various pile sizes, and also calculate the Krige?s relationship between the small blocks and the piles of different sizes. A real case study using a large Brazilian iron ore deposit illustrates the methodology and demonstrates the validity of the results.

The demographics and the growing numbers of people provide a strong signal that the demand for electrical power in Southern Africa will grow considerably over the foreseeable future. Without a steady and increasing supply of electricity development of the continent is likely to be constrained. The inventory of solar, wind, hydrothermal, geothermal and biomass resources will probably provide sources of energy for the future The parallels between extraction of natural resources in the minerals industry and the green energy industry is striking, and the well-established project development process in the minerals industry provides an ideal and useful template for comparing the establishment and development of green energy projects. The potential levels of power generation and carbon savings are described.

FINANCE The annual accounts which are attached to this report show an excess of income over expenditure of R21 519. It is very gratifying to be able to report that Council's efforts to stop the depletion of our accumulated funds are meeting with success. The most important contributors to our surplus this year are symposia and colloquia, sales of publications, Company Affiliate subscriptions and the profit on the journal. While we do not expect continued profits from all these sources in the future we do feel that we are now in the process of accumulating a substantial financial foundation. This will give the Council the necessary confidence to initiate the new developments in the activities of the Institute which are now under consideration. The decision to create a new grade of membership, Company Affiliate, is dealt with elsewhere in this report. There has been a generous initial response from companies and this is the cornerstone of our improved financial expectations. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R91 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 502. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R9 160 to RH 331, which is R2 134 in excess of the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to RH 529 compared with R23 010 a year ago. MEMBERSHIP Sixteen Fellows, twenty Members, six Graduates, nine Associates, twelve Students and twenty-four Company Affiliates were elected during the year. Conditions in the South African market relating to atmospheric emission control has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. Companies have become more responsible, environmentally aware, and have to comply to more stringent environmental limits set by legislation. This paper describes briefly the current best available atmospheric pollution abatement technologies relating to particulates, acid gases, NOx, acid mists, aerosols, mercury, dioxins and furans. Mention is also made as to the best practices for product work-up and waste product disposal.

TALK The Chairman invited Mr A. Paschalides to deliver his talk on 'Controlled blasting in stopes and new explosives developments'. The presentation proved to be of great interest to the meeting and lively discussion followed the talk. Mr N. A. Honnet proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Paschalides on behalf of all members of the O.F.S. Branch. CLOSURE The Chairman thanked Mr Paschalides for his talk and all present for their attendance, and as this was the last meeting for 1970 he wished all members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Chairman then called upon Mr S. Selmer-Olsen to present his paper, 'Lectures on electro-smelting of ferro-alloys'. After Mr S. Selmer-Olsen had presented his paper, he answered questions arising from contributions from the floor. The Chairman then thanked Mr S. Selmer-Olsen for presenting his paper. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. MEMBERSHIP Twenty-eight Fellows, twenty-four Members, seventeen Graduates, twenty-five Associates and twenty-seven Students were elected during the year. Four Members were admitted to Life Membership; Five Members were transferred to the grade of Fellow; one Student was transferred to the grade of Member; two Graduates and one Student were transferred to the grade of Member; six Students were transferred to the grade of Graduate; One Associate was transferred to the grade of Fellow; One Associate was transferred to the grade of Graduate. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE A committee was established to organise a drive for membership as it was felt that there are numbers of persons in our mining and metallurgical industries who are not yet members but who qualify for membership. Members of the committee were allocated responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry and for publicising the aims, objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute.

The research presented in this paper investigated the practical aspects of the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were conducted on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of Pt, Pd, and Au were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours, and 100 per cent for Pt, 97.4 per cent for Pd, and 99.9 per cent for Au after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while Ni concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, Ni adsorbs at approximately the same rate as the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. The equilibrium loading of gold is exothermic in nature (Fleming and Nicol, 1984) which will result in an increase in gold elution kinetics with an increase in temperature at similar pre-treatment conditions. A similar result was found for the elution of Pt and Pd. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and results suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing due to increased ionic strength.

(7.4) The following example will help to illustrate the importance of the variance of dispersion. Assume that we plan to develop a bedded coal deposit Q. We consider mining the ore body with only one giant dragline, which will extract each day a block of coal of size W'. The total area mined in a year will have a size W". We want to know whether this scheme is acceptable, given that the daily variation in ash content must not exceed a given percentage specified in the sales contract, which is renewable on a yearly basis. On a given day, if we mine the block W' (z), the ash content will average pwT (z). In a period of one year, the expected daily variation in ash content is measured by the expected variance of pwf (z) in W", i.e. by a2 (W'in W"). An alternative mining method might be to use two smaller draglines, each one mining W'/2 of ore per day, and Wn/2 per year. If the draglines are used to mine two distinct sections of the deposit, the expected daily variation in ash content will be u2 (W'/2 in Wj1/2)/2 Other situations, where economic decisions cannot be made without knowledge of the dispersion variance, are illustrated in § 7.4 and 7.5 below.
