The relationships between coal properties, the strength of coke, and the performance of a blast furnace were investigated by means of correlation studies, and a linear programming model was developed for the prediction of a coal blend based on these relationships. The unique feature of this approach is that it utilizes a knowledge of the minimum blast-furnace coke requirements, rather than the maximum attainable coke quality. The model predicts the least expensive coal blend that would still comply with the minimum coke-quality requirements of blast furnace. The study also confirms the existence of a relationship between the rank and caking parameters of coal, and the hot strength of coke. The effect of coke-oven operating parameters on coke quality is also discussed.

SYNOPSIS This paper is based on a thesis dealing with the problem of basing the current rate at which money is collected from mine owners to pay compensation for pneumoconiosis in the future, on the current dust hazard on mines. The certification of pneumoconiotics and the incidence of pneumoconiosis are discussed against the background of existing legal provision for collecting funds for compensation. The various pneumoconiosis indices are considered. In the data analyzed, the only pneumoconiosis index common to a number of classes of mines is the time it takes to develop pneumoconiosis. Sets of dust indices and pneumoconiosis indices are computed. Expressions are derived for the time it takes to develop pneumoconiosis as a function of the dust hazard, and for the collection of funds as a function of the time available for collection. From these two expressions follows an expression for the rate of collecting funds as a function of the dust hazard.

This is followed by some comments for the benefit of would-be inventors and potential users of patents. Part I focuses on the mining industry and then discusses views on patents that were quoted in Part I. The last section makes recommendations as to how inventors and users (including mining authorities) should handle patents.

The paper describes how a multivariable control scheme was developed and implemented for the run-of-mine milling circuit at a gold mine belonging to Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited. The key variables that are controlled are slurry level in the sump, mass of material in the mil, and product size. The control scheme has resulted in reliable control of the dynamics of the plant, and has provided a good basis for the optimization of plant operation by the selection of suitable set Points.

The paper presents details of the costs and outputs being achieved by South African mechanized tunneling and stoping drillings. The information was gathered from various hard-rock mining and tunneling operations ranging from deep-level gold mines to shallow base-metal mines. The survey included older pneumatic rigs and the newer electro-hydraulic rigs, but excluded shaft drilling and the stope drillings that were developed recently for narrow reefs. The information presented is intended as a guide to those having to decide whether to use mechanized drillings and, if so, what type and quantity

The paper reports on loading tests conducted on shotcrete reinforced with mesh and various types of steel fibre, and compares the results with the energy absorbing capabilities of 16 mm rebar shepherd's crooks. It is concluded that mesh-reit1forced shotcrete has sufficient energy-absorbing capabilities to contain rockbursts of significant magnitude, having greater energy absorbing capabilities, even at a thickness of 50 mm, than 16 mm rebar shepherd's crooks. Fibre-reinforced shotcrete has energy absorbing capabilities of the same order as, or better than, those of 16 mm rebar shepherd's crooks, but its performance is erratic.

Contribution by J.S. Kuijpers* Kirsten's paper discusses the potential for seismic activity on faults in relation to depth, span, stope support, and discontinuity strength, and puts forward some explicit conclusions. Quoting from the author, the main conclusions are as follows, together with my comments. Author's reply The author gratefully acknowledges the contribution to his paper. It provides further elucidation to the very complex problem of quantifying the effects of mining-induced seismicity. The mechanical behaviour of rock under seismic excitation has been sadly neglected over the past twenty years, during which attention was almost exclusively focused on the study of the spatial location of seismic events. It is to be lamented that, on the eve of South Africa's movement to significantly greater depths of mining, so little quantities information is known about the mechanical effects of seismicity. It is a challenge at this stage to make up for this lapse in knowledge in the shortest possible time.

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. A brief review of the development and ultimate design of the Model 16 Photometric Sorter is given, including the differences between it and its predecessor, the Model 13, which is currently in operation at Doornfontein. A description of the West Driefontein sorting plant is given, together with the rationale of its design. The installation programme for the sorters is described, and current operating and maintenance procedures are discussed. Operating results are tabulated and compared with the original test results. Operating costs are also discussed.

"In my Presidential address last year `The Institute in Retrospect and Prospect', I briefly reviewed the past activities of our Institute, I commented on the dynamic growth of the mineral activity of this country and of the great contribution towards this growth made by members of this Institute. I maintained that there was still further growth to come, pointing out that our future would be very much dependent on the availability and skills of our mining and metallurgical men. This Institute had, therefore, a most important task ahead to ensure that this country would have the necessary skilled engineers to develop our mineral industry so that we would be able to compete successfully in the wide world. In my address I highlighted many of the major achievements of our members and of our Institute. In today's review, I have no wish to repeat myself and I would, therefore, ask members and visitors to regard this review as complementary to my presidential address. I must also refer you to the very full resume of our affairs written for a special brochure in March, 1944, by E. H. Johnson, a founder member, on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary. There is no need to repeat what was given there, rather I will attempt to bring that history up to date. Our Institute was founded under the name of Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa on 24th March, 1894, by a group of chemists and metallurgists The name was changed to Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa early in 1903, and in July, 1956 became The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. We were not the first technical organisation in South Africa, the S.A. Association of Engineers and Architects having been formed in 1892. In that year also the British Institution of Mining and Metallurgy started in London. The estimation of some properties of South African coals from proximate analyses by J. W. de KOCK, Pr. Eng., Ph.D. (Chem. Eng.) Cantab. (Fellow) and J-P. FRANZIDIS, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Correlations have been obtained whereby calorific values, ultimate analyses, and Hardgrove Indices can be estimated from proximate analyses of South African coals. This has been done by the application of stepwise multiple linear-regression analyses of a mass of data published by the Fuel Research Institute.

This paper reviews some of the traditional methods of reserves estimation based on lognormal distribution with or without an additive constant. In the rush to computerize mine planning and grade control generaly, proven estimation methods, such as Sichel's t, seem to have been overlooked. By use of a personal microcomputer, the traditional methods were investigated thoroughly, the results being tested against existing tables and figures. The fitting of a lognormal distribution, including estimation of the additive constant, is discussed, and the calculation of Sichel's t estimator and its associated confidence limits is described in detail. Payability calculations for a lognormal distribution are also covered briefly. The advantages of personal computers, particularly speed and ease of use, are emphasized. This low-cost approach permits detailed investigation of some of the assumptions and approximations inherent in the established methods of calculation. Several disturbing discrepancies are revealed in various factors, and some generalized statements made by previous authors are found to be over-simplistic. Full details are given of acceptable approximations and computer algorithms, and concern is expressed over the possible loss of proven methods under the welter of new, sophisticated computer software.

An essential requirement for the planning of the global capacity of a mine is a knowledge of the functional relationship between the production level and the capital expenditure necessary to establish that level. An underlying mechanism connecting capital expenditure and mine production capacity is proposed in terms of a characteristic profile of the expenditure that both precedes and succeeds production expansion. By the assignment of a representative shape to this profile, the capital expenditure of individual mines can be modelled. The empirical values describing the characteristic profile are computed for a number of gold mines, and an attempt is made to explain variations in the model coefficients from mine to mine in terms of physical parameters such as shaft depth, shaft concentration, and average rate of depth increase during the life of the mine.

This paper describes how a 'mined out' coalfield is being mined successfully by opencast methods. The coalfield is that at New Vaal Colliery, which is situated in the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark-Sasolburg industrial complex. Al three coal seams at New Vaal had been mined previously, when the better-quality coal had been removed. The coal-preparation plant at New Vaal, which is also described, supplies coal to the 3600 MW Lethabo Power Station. The Colliery has been designed to supply 600 million sales tons of coal over its forty-year life.

This paper presents data collected from full-scale plants in order to verify the predictions of a new simulator of CIP or CL operations. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the simulator predictions. The simulator is able to predict the effects of many of the complex operating phenomena in GIP and CL plants that previous simulation techniques could not describe. This is illustrated by predictions of how factors, such as the manner of carbon transfer, concurrent leaching, and gold loading on eluted carbon, can affect the performance of an adsorption plant.

this paper describes an innovation in computer software that permits mining professionals to collaborate on exploration and mining projects regardless of geographic location. Growth of mining companies through merger and acquisition has created a greater need for mining professionals to collaborate, especially as projects and project participants are becoming geographically remote. Surpac NetVision, the name given to this new collaboration technology, satisfies this need by deploying interactive 3D graphics sessions across computer networks. It achieves this by using common web browser technology as the deployment medium. A plug-in architecture that supports diverse file formats permits transparent read and write of foreign data to further enhance the collaboration process. Surpac NetVision supports any number of connections from web browsers on remote computers using existing networks. Software components required to enable the collaboration session are deployed to the remote computer as required and cached for future sessions. The collaboration session at each computer is characterized by a fully functional replica of the user interface for Surpac NetVision from which any function can be executed by any client, at the owners discretion. All geometry and display attributes deployed to remote clients to render 3Dgraphics are highly compressed to reduce bandwidth requirements. A detailed fundamental study has been made of the various factors that influence the partial reactions comprising the electrochemical model of the cementation of gold from cyanide solutions by zinc. The effects of cyanide concentration, pH, agitation, additions of lead, and the presence of various impurity ions on both the anodic dissolution of zinc and the cathodic reduction of gold have been investigated. The results are used to explain the influence of these variables on the rate of cementation, and possible implications of this work for plant practice are discussed.
