Objective justification on economic grounds for expenditure aimed at improving the quality of the underground working environment requires a suitable measure of any improvement in productivity that would result under routine working conditions. For this purpose, a composite production criterion is suggested, as well as its correlation under actual operating conditions with various factors directly affecting productivity and the environment. Of the environmental factors, wet-bulb temperature appears to be the major factor affecting productivity. The production data given indicate that a decrease in the wet-bulb temperature of 1OC can be expected to result, on average, in some 3 to 4 per cent increase in productivity; in the higher temperature ranges, this percentage could be much higher.

Turbulence in mechanical flotation cells, achieved via an impeller, plays a key role in keeping particles in suspension, dispersing air bubbles, and promoting particle-bubble collision. However, studying the hydrodynamics of a flotation cell is not a simple task, due to the complex nature of flotation systems which are opaque, turbulent, multiphase and polydisperse in terms of particle and bubble sizes. In this paper we study the impact of impeller design modifications on the hydrodynamics of a continuously overflowing bench-scale flotation tank. To this end, two different impeller designs, with and without a stator, were assessed using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). This allowed the authors to determine, for the first time, the effect of an impeller design on the behaviour of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic particle tracers. It was experimentally observed that the use of a stator modifies the hydrodynamics within the flotation cell, distorting the lower mixing loop that is characteristic of axial impellers. The role of the stator in dissipating turbulence results in reduced particle velocities outside of the impeller-stator region. These results have important implications for flotation cell design and are discussed in the context of the impact that different designs have on particle movement, flotation hydrodynamics and, ultimately, flotation performance. Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. In the second of a series of five colloquia with the theme Rescue 91 ..Survival Initiatives for the Mining Industry, the emphasis was placed on the harnessing of improved technology for the benefit of all the industry. The Colloquium was held at Mintek, Randburg, and attracted some 150 delegates and speakers from a cross-section of the industry. Eight papers were presented, and panel discussions were held to round off the morning and afternoon sessions. The purpose of the Colloquium was to allow mines and other groups to put forward innovative schemes in the management of technology that could be shared by everyone in their determination to ensure the survival of the gold-mining industry in the current difficult times. Selective flotation to separate copper minerals from, for example, Mo- and/or As-bearing minerals is a continuing problem because the selectivity of current systems is imperfect. Selective Cu-As flotation is currently difficult, and the most common Cu-Mo selective flotation method uses NaHS; this must be done in an enclosed system because, under acidic conditions, this method produces hydrogen sulfide. In this paper, some novel alternative flotation processes that use redox reactions are discussed; these methods have a much lower environmental impact. Oxidation and reduction reactions can be used to make copper minerals more hydrophilic and Mo-bearing minerals more hydrophobic. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that the copper minerals became hydrophilic because hydrophilic iron precipitated and several hydroxides covered the copper minerals’ surfaces, whereas the molybdenum minerals remained hydrophobic because their sulfide surfaces were not covered. Flotation experiments on these minerals after redox treatments indicated that excellent separation of Cu-minerals from Mo-minerals can be achieved. Possible mechanisms for this separation were investigated using detailed surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations. The additives used to initiate the redox reactions are easy to handle and make these new flotation procedures better than current processes because the new methods do not emit effluent gas and because they are commercially viable. CITIC Heavy Industries has a large installed base of grinding equipment throughout Africa in different configurations, including high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill and semi-autogenous ball crusher. The total installed power of CITIC’s mills exceeds 430 MW. In this paper, we compare several typical grinding circuits of copper in Africa with about 15 kt/d throughput based on ore properties, process selection, equipment sizing, and key equipment capital and operating costs. Actual operating performance is also introduced. The comparison for the following mine sites provides a general reference for the selection of copper grinding circuits with this approximate throughput: Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine with high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill circuit, and Deziwa and Sicomine Copper-Cobalt Mines with semi-autogenous ball crusher circuits

Laboratory testing of the self-heating propensity of coal, using crossing-point temperature and differential thermal analysis techniques, involves the frequent recording of several temperatures. The volume of data and the desire for high accuracy of measurements motivates an automated recording system. The data which are recorded must be adjusted for calibration factors and the results presented in both graphical and tabular form. The paper describes hardware and software features of a computerised system which is being used to establish the relative propensity to self-heating of a wide variety of coals.

This study investigated flotation of phosphate from a low-medium grade 8-12% P2O5, 65-73% SiO2 sedimentary phosphate ore from Kropz Elandsfontein (herein referred to as Elandsfontein) in South Africa. Quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) was used to determine apatite grain size distribution, liberation and mineral association in the F2 horizon sample. The mineralogy indicated that apatite was liberated and for the Elandsfontein plant to operate at the design throughput, the flotation feed has to be milled to a coarse grind ranging between 300 μm and 425 μm. Reverse flotation process routes using varying reagent dosages, and flotation feed top sizes that could possibly yield a final product of 31% P2O5,10% SiO2 at a reasonable +70% P2O5 recovery were investigated. Based on the results, a split circuit of coarse (-300+212μm) flotation and fine (-212+20μm) flotation, was mostly preferred as compared to treating the whole ore. A final combined concentrate of 31% P2O5 and 10% SiO2 with P2O5 recovery of 84% could be produced from the reverse split circuit. The robustness of reverse flotation for both coarse and fine fractions was further investigated. Reverse flotation of the fines fraction was found to be robust and produced a final product of 31% P2O5. It was however more challenging to achieve the required product grade and recoveries on the coarser fraction (-425+212μm), suggesting that reverse circuit was not adequately robust at fractions coarser than 300μm. At ISCOR the quantitative determination of the structural properties of coke is done with a Leitz-TAS Image Analysis System. A reflected light microscopic image of a coke sample is converted into a binary image and stored in computer memory or on hard disc. By means of mathematical and stereological techniques the system can transform the images electronically. A lightpen can be used to determine the sequence of these operations. TASIC, which is based on BASIC language, is used as the program language on the computer. The majority of the programs are written by the user to ensure satisfactory results for specific studies. The computer controls the whole system, including the movement of the microscope stage, focusing, transformation and measurement of the image and data processing. The computer is also applied for establishing statistical correlations between the structural and other coke and coal parameters as well as for graphics and predictions of the coke structure. Factors affecting the structural properties of coke are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

The fines produced is not suitable as feed material for the subsequent rotary kiln and the electrical arc furnace. The need for briquetting the ferronickel ore is premised on the minimisation of fine particles in the rotary kiln as well as improving charge permeability in the furnace, and improving overall process safety. Briquetting may be defined as an agglomeration method in which fine particles are compressed under pressure. It consists of three different technologies: vibropressing, roller pressing and stiff extrusion. The current study focuses on evaluating the performance of ferronickel briquettes generated, using roller-pressing technology. Physical properties, chemical properties and metallurgical properties of the briquettes were used to evaluate their performance and quality. Standard ISO tests for iron ore pellets were used. Size degradation as a result of reduction was measured using the ISO 4696-1 test. The decrepitation of the briquettes at the point of entry into the rotary kiln was evaluated using the ISO 8371 test method at a temperature of 700oC. The degree of reduction was evaluated using the ISO 4695 test procedure. Average green briquette compressive strength of 559 N was reported at a moisture content of 16% with an average drop number of 19.1. Increasing the moisture content has a detrimental effect on both the compressive strength and the green briquette yield. The drop number is expressed as the number of drops until breakage, when a briquette is dropped from a 1 m height, decreased with an increase in moisture content. Results from a study undertaken at a Transvaal colliery on the feasibility of undermining an urban development by conventional bord-and-pillar mining operations in the No. 4 Seam of the Highveld Coalfield are discussed. Surface ground vibrations above production sections were measured, analysed, and then compared with well-accepted guidelines so that the expected effects of vibration on inhabitants and surface structures could be determined. The measurement and scaling of ground vibration from blasting are outlined, and the effects on humans and structures are discussed. It is concluded that residential areas can be safely undermined by conventional drilling and blasting techniques provided certain simple guidelines are followed.

The leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric sulfate media is notorious for its slow and inhibited kinetics. Different methods have been proposed to improve the kinetics, including the use of organic compounds as additives to the leaching media. In this study, the enhancing effect of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol on the leaching of chalcopyrite in aerated acid ferric sulfate solutions using different reactor systems was investigated. The results revealed a clear improvement of copper dissolution by methanol and 1-propanol relative to tests with no additives under similar conditions. Operating a continuous-flow mini-column reactor yields surprisingly good results, potentially related to the maintaining of a consistent leaching micro-environment on the mineral surface. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the alcohols result in the removal of surface deposits formed during the anodic dissolution, potentially thus facilitating improved cathodic reduction of the ferric ion to drive the anodic dissolution.

For gold plants in Russia, it is very complicated and costly to use cyanide leaching for efficient processing of gold refractory ores, where gold is closely associated with sulphide minerals and the significant amount of natural carbonaceous matter present. Oxidative roasting of gold refractory concentrates is a well-known method, making it possible to obtain a high recovery rate of precious metals to a target product. The use of oxidative roasting is limited in general by the expense of capturing and neutralising the harmful components of roasted gas, mainly sulphur (SO2, SO3) and arsenic (As2O3) oxides. This paper addresses testing and development of an optimised technology to process gold refractory gravity and flotation concentrates by means of oxidative roasting which stabilises arsenic as calcium arsenate. The process involves roasting of a gravity or flotation refractory ore concentrate in a mixture with lime and calcium chloride, with a supply of oxygen, and at 600-700°С. During the roasting a carbonaceous matter of the concentrate burns out and sulphide components transform into harmless calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2), and iron passes into the form of hematite (Fe2O3). After disintegration, the roasting cinder is concentrated on a table to obtain a high-grade gravity concentrate and gravity tailings. The high-grade gravity concentrate is subject to smelting in a mixture with fluxing agents, which results in alloyed gold and slag. The gravity tailings are ground and reported to cyanide leaching. In the case of a flotation concentrate, the roast cinder is ground to minus 30 μm and subject to sorption cyanide leaching. High gold recovery (90-95%) of the target product and environmental safety are typical of the improved technology under consideration. Two national patents were granted for the methods developed to treat refractory concentrates bearing precious metals. The principal objective of this investigation was to conduct a thorough literature review on the status of project readiness mechanisms, tools, techniques, and frameworks for mining projects. The review aimed at identifying common readiness evaluation criteria as well as potential shortcomings that prevent the establishment of a generalizable project readiness index. The literature review included a general overview of capital project performances and the importance of project readiness assessments to improve project delivery success. The study then progressed towards literature involving mining projects and how this differs from infrastructure and industrial project assessments. The paper concludes by summarizing the current state of mining project readiness assessments, the unique and differentiating factors to be considered, and suggests recommendations towards the development of generalizable readiness assessment criteria for mining projects.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis, including a brief statement of conclusions. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction. Development of the main substance. Conclusions, in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol %is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramms metre per second per second (kg m/s'). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. I, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standardsymbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C shoulrl be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications.
