PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

This paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of process control agent (PCA) on the characteristics of Ti-Mg powders during milling. It has been shown that a 2% increase in PCA content leads to up to a 40% increase in yield of the milled powder but reduces the kinetics of the mechanical alloying process. The introduction of 4% PCA decreases the mean powder particle size by up to 30%, whereas 6% PCA increases the mean particle size by up to 230%. The characteristics of the milled powders will be discussed in relation to the role of PCA in the milling process. Keywords Titanium?magnesium, mechanical alloying, PCA.

Qualitative analysis of three mineral samples from northern Mozambique was accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD), microscopy, scintillation, and magnetic determination. Chemical characterization was accomplished using ICP-OES and pressed powder XRF after dissolution using microwave-assisted digestion and flux fusion. The samples consisted of a mixture of minerals with tantalite as the major component, with minor amounts of microlite, quartz, mica, accessory garnet, and tourmaline. Incomplete dissolution was obtained using microwave digestion, with maximum recoveries of 90.25 ± 0.06% and 88.90 ± 0.04% for Nb2O5 and Ta2O5 respectively. Complete dissolution using Li2B4O7 resulted in recoveries of 98.5 ±0.2% Nb2O5 and 100.4 ± 0.3% Ta2O5.

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."

Spiral concentration forms a crucial part of gravity separation circuits. The application of process models in the operation of gravity separation circuits offers significant benefits in recoveries and grade control. Significant strides in the modelling of spiral concentrators have been made during the last couple of decades. Despite these advances in modelling techniques and models, application in industrial processes is not fully optimized. The adjustment of splitter positions to accommodate changes in the feed parameters is impractical and difficult, resulting in losses. In this work an optical method is employed to detect the concentrate band position as a function of operating variables. As expected, the results indicate a strong influence of the solids content and total heavy mineral (THM) feed grade on the predicted gangue-mineral interface. Viscosity modifiers indicated the band position to be sensitive to viscosity and therefore the slimes content. Validation on an industrial sample indicated the possibility of using this model in feed-forward control application.

"Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions. Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magnetohydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

"Mine planning is a multidisciplinary procedure that aims to guarantee the profitability of a mining operation in changing and uncertain conditions. Mine plans are normally classified as long-term, intermediate-term, and short-term plans, and many factors affect the preciseness of these plans and cause deviations in reaching the objectives. Commodity price is the heart of mine planning, but it has a changing and uncertain nature. Therefore, the determination of mine plans in the presence of uncertain mineral price is a challenge. A robust mine plan reduces the risk of early mine closure. A procedure is presented to determine the value at risk (VaR) in any possible mine planning alternative. VaR is considered together with downside risk and upside potential in order to select the most profitable and least risky plan. The model is tested on a small iron ore deposit. IntroductionMining projects are normally evaluated with the objective of maximizing economic value, as measured by the net present value (NPV). The aim of mine planning is to develop a yearly extraction plan that guides the mining operation to the highest NPV (Dagdelen, 2007; Yarmuch and Ortiz, 2011). This plan considers the technical constraints such as blending requirements, block sequencing, and pit slope (Caccetta and Hill 2003). Thus, the mine plan affects the economics and the payback period of mining operations.Mine planning is a procedure based on which the profitability of the mining operation is guaranteed in changing and uncertain conditions (McCarter, 1992). However, conventional mine planning ignores the volatility and uncertainty of future commodity prices and does not allow for managerial flexibility. It is common practice to assume a deterministic and constant commodity price through the mine life. The problem with this approach is that the commodity price is the heart of the mine planning procedure and governs the profitability and feasibility of the operation; thus ignoring price volatility will result in a sub-optimal mine plan."

This paper addresses the impact of the variable speed drive on the particle size distribution in the product of a fully autogenous UG2 grinding circuit. It further discusses the impact of a varying particle size distribution in the product of the mill on the downstream classification and milling circuits. An industrial case study was used and data is presented to illustrate the techniques applied to identify the root cause of the shift in operational efficiency. The results achieved from both the investigation into the shift in plant efficiency and the sub-sequent corrective action taken illustrate that the root-cause methodology used in advance control can be effectively applied on production sites to both detect the shift and identify probable root-causes. The industrial example used confirms that the variable speed drive in a UG2 autogenous milling operation is a critical control parameter to ensure that the plant operates to design specifications.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Self-directed work team concept is the product of relentless performance pressure on American industries during the late eighties and early nineties from other world industrial leaders like Japan. The concept proved to be a successful vehicle by which the Americans could increase their production and improve their safety statistics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the concept as a means to improve the overall performance on South African goldmines. he study is directed by a historical research section, answering questions like: ?Why do we need to change? ?What is a Self-directed work team? ?What are the principle advantages of the concept? ?What are the essential requirements for the concept to succeed? The study also includes an empirical research section that focuses on the current Self-directed work team situation in the South African gold mining industry. The empirical research section is limited to three case studies within Anglogold due to a study period of only six weeks. The mines chosen for the case studies have been labelled Mine 1, Mine 2 and Mine 3. The latter being the base mine allowing for a more in depth study. This includes a perception analysis towards Self-directed work teams within the mine. The study proves the truth of the Latin proverb ?Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis? meaning ?The times are changing, and we are changing with them?. The chief change catalysts identified are a dwindling gold price and a projected labour crisis. From the study it is evident that the Self-directed work team concept disposes of the critical parameters required for a dramatic improvement in performance. The study also indicates that for the concept to succeed, certain factors like top-level commitment and management-employee trust have to be in place. Sadly, the concluding part of the study proves that very few of the identified critical success parameters are present in the South African gold mining industry. This can serve to explain why the industry only has success with the concept when monetary gain is the chief motivator. The study only focuses on the reasons why the concept is not performing to its full potential and does not wander into explaining the reasons for the current unsupportive milieu in the industry. Self-directed work teams could well rescue the South Africangold mining industry but currently we are driving a square pin into a round hole! Comminution is a vital part of minerals extraction, and therefore of the South African economy. The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.

Mechanisation of mining operations is not a new concept in the world of mining. Machinery has been developed, manufactured and used for many decades in massive orebodies and coal mines, both locally and abroad. Because of their size and the huge tonnages available, massive ore bodies lend themselves very easily to mechanisation. However, little progress in mechanisation has been made in narrow tabular orebodies in South Africa. The equipment available for narrow tabular orebodies requires excavations of a size that introduce large volumes of waste dilution. Nevertheless, it is essential for South African miners to experiment with mechanisation and to find a solution to the problem. This address looks at current conventional mining methods and compares them to bord-and-pillar type mining methods. Off-reef mechanisation is also touched on. It then looks at different hybridised mining methods that are being used, i.e. a mixture of conventional mining and mechanisation. It finally looks at future prospects for mechanisation in narrow tabular orebodies.

Selective leaching of phases in charge chrome is used in a variety of industrial processes for the production of chromium chemicals. A mineralogical study was made of a range of local charge chrome samples, at various stages of leaching in sulphuric acid (20g/l at 90°C), using mainly a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyzer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the leaching behaviour of the different types of charge chrome depends largely on the nature of the secondary phases, which in turn depends upon whether the silicon content is above or below 4 per cent by mass. The leaching behaviour of high-chromium ferrite is anomalous, and it is postulated that the process is analogous to the corrosion of brass by dezincification. Although many investigations of the deformation behaviour of rocks have been carried out, most of them are carried out in compression. In all rock engineering practice it is usually assumed that the deformation of rocks in tension is the same as that in compression. However, data from numerous researchers have shown that this assumption is not correct for some rocks. A new loading frame for testing rocks in compression and direct tension has recently been developed by the authors, with the capacity to conduct both compression and tensile tests on the same rock sample. The results obtained show that the ratios between the average Young?s modulus in compression (ECA) and in direct tension (ETA) are 1, 1.16, 2 and 6 respectively in four rock types tested. For Poisson?s ratios, analogous relations were obtained. It was observed that, in all cases, the tangent Young?s modulus intension reduces with an increase in the applied tensile stress, while the behaviour of Poisson?s ratio is similar, but shows greater variability. The difference between the Young?s modulus of rocks in tension and that in compression could lead, large errors in calculating induced stresses around underground openings, as well as in determining the Brazilian tensile strength of rocks. This may have a significant influence in rock engineering and therefore more investigation is necessary into the tensile deformation behaviour of rocks and its influence.

A new system for granting access to mineral rights is proposed in the recently released White Paper, ?A Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa?. Official policy states that ?Government?s long-term objective is for all mineral rights to vest in the State for the benefit of and on behalf of all the people of South Africa?. In order to achieve this objective, government is presently investigating the feasibility of imposing a financial or tax-related disincentive to holding mineral rights. The paper aims to present the pros and cons and to examine the alternatives which will cause minimal disruption to the minerals industry in the period during which mineral rights are transferred to the State. South Africa is a country whose economic and political history is embedded in the development of its mineral resources and has inherited a system which cannot simply be wished away. Hasty or radical decisions will compound the problem, rather than provide a lasting and widely acceptable solution. Mineral rights ownership and its impact on access to mineral deposits are discussed. Taxation as a possible economic disincentive is also evaluated. Finally, the value of mineral resource related information as a prerequisite to mineral policy decisions and as an alternative to mineral rights taxation is emphasized.
