The Los Bronces Development Project (LBDP) was approved in October 2007 by the Anglo American plc Board at a capital cost of some US$1.74B, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010. The project represents a big step forward for the Los Bronces mine since it will increase the treatment rate by 140%, the mining rate by 64% and almost double copper production during the first four years of the project. This economy of scale will also position Los Bronces as a much bigger and efficient mining operation, better prepared to face adverse market scenarios and allowing Anglo to consolidate its position in base metals. The project addressed numerous scope alternatives such as plant capacity vs mine capacity, cut-off grade strategy to maximise value based on the existing flotation and leaching process, cutback strategy, etc. Main infrastructure aspects of the project are as follows: ?Dump area with 2400Mt capacity for waste and low grade material ?Mining equipment: 1 x electric shovel, 12 x 300t trucks, 1 x drill ?Primary crusher: 60? x 89? ?Three new power lines (144MW capacity) ?Grinding plant at 87kt/day nominal capacity (includes a 4.3km tunnel with a regenerative conveyor belt) ?Grinding plant: 1 SAG mill 40? x 25?, 2 ball mills ?Slurry pipeline (52 km from grinding to flotation plant) with five choke stations ?Flotation plant (rougher, cleaning, regrinding circuits and molybdenum flotation). The history of Los Bronces started in 1867 when it was discovered. In 1978 ENAMI (Government company) sold Los Bronces to Exxon for US$112M. The same year a snow avalanche destroyed San Francisco Flotation Plant. In 1979 the plant was rebuilt at 4.9kt/day and from 1979 to 2002 several plant expansions were made up to 54kt/day capacity. In 2002 Anglo acquired Los Bronces for US$1.3B. The 2002 resource and reserve statement showed reserves at 459Mt at 1.02%CuT and resources at 780Mt at 0.80%CuT. The 2007 statement shows reserves at 1,480Mt at 0.67%CuT and resources at 1,644Mt at 0.45%CuT. Defining the size of a plant expansion is the key challenge that any expansionary project faces. The scope of this paper is a general review of the project, describing all the mining techniques that were used to define the best options that maximise value. In this context, a range of plant capacities (from 58 to 230kt/day) combined with a range of mining capacities (from 83 to 166Mt/a) were evaluated in detail, defining for each option a mine plan, Capex and Opex, and cut-off grade strategy for flotation and leaching processes and the associated Net Present Value (NPV) that was used as the selection criteria. The Los Bronces mineral resources potential provides good growth opportunities for the mine beyond LBDP implementation, offering an exciting invitation to continue studying new initiatives that maximise the value of this deposit.

The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,600. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Fellows shall not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. They shall be practising their profession at the time of application. Entrance fee R10.00, Annual subscription R17.00. Letters of designation: F.S.A.I.M.M. Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. A candidate shall be practising his profession at the time of his application. Entrance fee R8.00, Annual subscription R15.00. Letters of designation: M.S.A.I.M.M. Associates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Associate, is at the time of his application, already a Student, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. In all cases the applicants shall satisfy the Council that they are fit and proper persons to become Associates. Entrance fee R8.00, Annual subscription R15.00. Graduates shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. They shall not remain Graduate members after attaining the age of 30 years without the permission of Council. Entrance fee R2.00, Annual subscription R10.00. Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. The ?Kolwezi Zinc Plant?, in French ?Usines à Zinc de Kolwezi? (UZK), has produced about 910 000 dry metric tons of residues during the hydrometallurgical treatment of calcines from sulphide zinc concentrates. The zinc hydro plant residues contain on average 19.47% Zn, 2.7% Cu, 2.1% Pb, 26.6% Fe, 0.12% Cd, 0.39% As, 157ppm Ag, 447.8 ppm Ga, 475.4 ppm Ge, etc. This material was dumped in five ponds in the vicinity of the plant. The high Fe content in the ore concentrates induced important conversion of some of zinc and copper into ferrites during the roasting process. Those ferrites are very stable compounds, which are difficult to leach with dilute sulphuric acid solution. Therefore, they mainly report to the leaching residues. Hot leaching has been successfully applied to the treatment of zinc hydro plant residues. The method, however, presents the disadvantage of simultaneously dissolving iron(Fe). It is then necessary to remove an important iron quantity from solution prior to zinc and other metals recovery.

(Visitor) T his paper highlights the changes that are taking place at De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited in mining methods, mechanization, and employment practices. De Beers has four underground mines in Kimberley itself (Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers, and Wesselton), and two open-cast mines outside Kimberley (Finsch and Koffiefontein). Emphasis is placed on the new method envisaged for Koffiefontein when it becomes an underground mine. The paper also includes notes on chemical drilling and on winding practices.

"Based on the complicated geological production conditions and abnormal strata behavior of the fully mechanized caving face No. 102 in the Xinyang Coal Mine, we analyze the breaking and forming process of distinguishing key block structures in close spaced coal seams. This analysis establishes an integrated mechanical model of these distinguishing structures. Furthermore, the horizontal force TAB generated by downward key blocks A and B is quantified, as is the Pressure PG exerted by key block B on caved gangue. Finally, the interaction mechanism is revealed. Analysis of the results using Mathematica reveal the following: 1. Both TAB and PG exhibit approximately inverse relationships to coal pillar width b; 2. TAB exhibits an approximately exponential relationship with mining height M of which the base is greater than 1; 3. PG exhibits an approximately arctangent relationship with mining height M. Combining these results with field observations, we conclude that the area in the vicinity of supports 100#–120# in the upper area of working face No. 102 is the likely zone of abnormal strata behavior. Thus, this area was classified as a key control area. Based on these results, the graded support control technique is proposed. Application of this technique in the field resulted in a reduction in the rate of hydraulic support system malfunction from 47% to 7% in the key control area. In addition, during times of periodic mining pressure, the roof caving height value never exceeded 0.3 m and the maximum spalling depth never exceeded 0.2 m. Overall, the results indicate that this new technique has markedly increased the stability of surrounding support rock material. IntroductionClose-spaced coal seams are widely distributed in China, and mining proceeds from the uppermost to the lowermost seam (Zhang et al., 2008). In the case of coal seams in close proximity, a particular set of risk factors becomes pertinent. These include disturbance of lower seams during the mining of overlying ones and the decrease in mechanical stability of lower coal seams following repeated movement of key blocks in main coal seam roofs. This inevitably results in behaviour such as heavy wall spalling and support damage to fully mechanized caving faces in lower-lying coal seams, which necessitates a significantly increase in the measures to support surrounding rock material (Zhang et al., 2010; Huang et al., 2013; Xie et al., 2013)."

"The advantages of using Nb and Ti-Nb coatings for improving the hardness and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V were investigated. It has been reported that Ti6Al4V used in orthopaedic implants tends to release toxic Al and V ions into the surrounding tissue. Thin layers of Nb and Ti-Nb were deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates using a laser metal deposition technique. The deposited material was analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion behaviour of the deposited layers was investigated using a Metrohm Autolab PG Stat101 compact potentiostat at 25°C in simulated body fluid. A Vickers hardness system was used to study the mechanical properties. Both Nb and Ti-Nb coatings exhibited good metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The microstructure and the XRD analyses for the Nb system showed that the ??-Nb phase was most dominant, while the Ti-Nb system comprised a mixture of the ?? and ?? phases. The average hardness of the Ti6Al4V substrate was 350 HV0.3, with a slight increase for the Nb coating (363 HV0.3) and a much higher hardness from the Ti-Nb coating at 423 HV0.3. The corrosion results show that the deposited Nb was more corrosion-resistant in the solution than either the Ti6Al4V substrate or the Ti-Nb coating. IntroductionMetals such as CoCrMo, 316L stainless steel, and NiTi alloy are used for manufacturing biomedical implants because of their distinct properties, including low Young’s modulus and resistance to corrosion (Ryan, Pandit, and Apatsidis, 2006). These implants are required to remain in the body of the patient for many years. Due to a favourable combination of mechanical and corrosion properties, titanium (Ti) and its alloys have emerged as the material of choice for biomedical implants. Nevertheless, their use is not entirely without challenges. For example, in total hip replacement, surface degradation and release of metal debris from metal erosion caused by friction limit the service life of the implant (Oldani and Dominguez, 2012; Manivasagam, Dhinasekaran, and Rajamanickam, 2010). Ti6Al4V is generally regarded as the material of choice, but it has been found that over extended periods of time, the combination of surface corrosion and erosion releases toxic aluminium (Al) and vanadium (V) ions into the body (Khan, Williams, and Williams, 1996). This has led to the investigation of titanium alloys containing niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr), tantalum (Ta), and molybdenum (Mo) as substitutes for the aluminium- and vanadium-containing Ti6Al4V (Okazaki et al., 1997)."

Accurate determination of platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold (Au) has always proven to be a difficult task, due to their low concentrations in platiniferous ores. The most common preconcentration technique used in analysis of these metals is fire assay with a flux containing nickel or lead. This technique can be improved by using co-collectors. Here we hypothesise that Fe, Co, and Cu can be used as co-collectors to enhance separation and preconcentration of PMGs and gold by fire assay. To test this hypothesis, geological exploration samples from Siyanda Union Mine (Northam, South Africa) were analysed by an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) for PGMs (Pt, Pd, and Rh) and Au. A control sample (certified reference material AMIS 0426) was also analysed by the same technique. The PGM and Au recoveries from the control sample ranged from 83% to 105% for all three co-collectors, with relative standard deviations less than 10% for the control sample and 7% for the geological samples. The PGM and Au recoveries by Fe and Co co-collectors were modestly higher than that of the Cu-collector. These results indicate that Fe and Co are better co-collectors than Cu, presumably due to the loss of analyte when using Cu. Taken together, Fe and Co co-collectors can be viable alternatives for analysis of PGMs and gold using the fire assay method.

The feasibility of employing a multi-stage column for the recovery of gold from cyanided pulps using extruded carbon was investigated on a pilot-plant scale. It was anticipated that the column contactor would have certain advantages over conventional carbon-in-pulp plants. The feed pulp was screened to remove particles larger than 200 µm and was diluted to a solids concentration of about 23 per cent. The column was operated continuously for 24 days at a pulp flowrate of about 60 l/min and a carbon flowrate of 44 litres per day. The average gold concentrations in the barren pulp 12 hours and 24 hours after the carbon transfer were 0,012 and 0,031 mg/l respectively. The average gold concentration in the solution phase in the feed was about 2,0 mg/L. The average gold Loading on the carbon was 6290 g/t. Calcium carbonate was removed from the loaded carbon by treatment with 0,5 bed volumes of 2,8 per cent hydrochloric acid solution at ambient temperature. The calcium concentration was reduced from about 17 000 to about 500 g/t The carbon was eluted by the Zadra procedure at atmospheric pressure. The results of the elution were highly satisfactory, the gold concentration being reduced from about 6000 to about 20 g/t in 48 hours. The eluted carbon was regenerated in a Rintoul kiln at about 700°C. The activity of the regenerated carbon was found to be at least as high as that of fresh carbon.

The paper sets out the strategic importance of South Africa?s mining and minerals sector to the national economy. It relates how inexorable and accelerating urbanization and industrialization in emerging markets, especially in China and India, will translate into sustained demand for the minerals that South and southern Africa have in abundance. It warns that while countries buying raw materials from South Africa use these inputs as the basis on which to build value-added, employment-creating industries, South Africa is failing to exploit the economic benefits inherent in its mineral wealth, exacerbating its shortage of skills.

BEEDON AND C. J. JONKER* Dr Bleloch's paper has outlined the advantages of recycling stack-gas of low nitrogen content in the blast furnace. In the first instance it would appear to be extremely beneficial in controlling the hearth temperature and allowing a 100 per cent oxygen-blast to be used. On a second point however we have to disagree. It is claimed that heat is liberated in the combustion zones by the oxidation of CO to CO2 near the tuyeres and in the subsequent reduction of the CO2 by CO. The author has hypothesized as follows, and we quote: 'The C+CO2=2 CO reaction in the outer combustion zone at about 1 700°C is no longer endothermic due to loss of stability of CO2 and its consequent dissociation into CO and free oxygen.' This statement requires closer examination. If we consider the individual events occurring with the CO in the recycled topgas, with the oxygen in the blast and with the coke in the burden, as done by Dr Bleloch, the following heat considerations emerge. All heats of reaction are calculated from the enthalpy values of each reactant and product, as well as the temperature dependence of their molar heat capacities. (a) At the tuyeres: CO+1/2 O2-+CO2 . . . . . (1) CO, CO2 at 500°C; O2 at 25°C. ?H reaction = -65 000 cals/mole CO The reaction (1) is exothermic. (b) In the outer combustion zone: CO2+C?2 CO . . . . . . . . (2) C, CO at 1 700°C; CO2 at 500 0C. ?H reaction = -56 000 cals/mole CO Reaction (2) is endothermic. The overall heat gain of reactions (1) and (2) is ?H=+56 000 - 65 000= -9000 cals/mole CO i.e. the overall reaction is slightly exothermic, the amount of heat liberated is however smaller than suggested by Dr Bleloch. (c) The dissociation CO2+CO+1/2 O2 . . . . . (3) is a highly endothermic reaction at 1 700 0C, requiring 82 000 cals/mole CO2 to proceed to completion. Furthermore, this reaction (3) is energetically not favoured to proceed, as can be observed from the free energy-temperature relationship of figure (3), which favours the formation of CO2 at 1 700 0C. Hence direct dissociation of CO2 at 1 700 0C appears to be unlikely.* The concept of recycling topgas is however still intriguing from many other points of view. Apart from providing a very efficient method of hearth temperature control, it will create a much higher CO partial pressure in the stack. Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube. SYNOPSIS The effect of conditioning energy on the flotation of gold, U308, and pyrite was investigated in the range 0,1 to 100 kWh per tonne of dry ore for various combinations of conditioning time and impeller speed in a cylindrical con¬ditioning tank. It was found that, when the conditioning energy was increased to between 5 and 10 kWh per tonne of dry ore, the total recovery and flotation rate of the valuable minerals (expressed as Klimpel parameters) increas¬ed substantially. The Klimpel parameters are dependent on conditioning energy, but are independent of condition¬ing time or impeller speed (at constant conditioning energy). The Klimpel parameters of the gangue are indepen¬dent of conditioning energy.

"Prior to operating a non-recovery coke pilot plant, it was critical to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 coal cake into the oven. Various compaction parameters were verified and established on a small laboratory-scale compaction machine to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability. These parameters include cake density, cake surface moisture, transverse strength (force applied perpendicular to the original compacted coal cake layers), and applied force to the coal cake. This work determined the behavioural characteristics of the coal while being compacted either with a full-sized or a 1/3-sized compaction plate in a 9 kg capacity mould. Two different coals were evaluated, namely Waterberg semi-soft coking coal (sscc) and Oaky North hard coking coal.The target wet cake density of 1 100 kg/m3 (79% of 1 400 kg/m3 relative density) was achieved for Waterberg sscc, with a particle size d50 varying between 0.6 mm and 1 mm, utilizing the 1/3-sized compaction plate in the laboratory-scale set-up, with 11.6% surface moisture and 92.2 t/m2 commercial equivalent applied force. For Oaky North hard coking coal, a wet cake density of 1 189 kg/m3 (85% of 1 400 kg/m3 relative density) was achieved at a surface moisture content of 12.3% and at a lower applied force than that for Waterberg sscc, i.e. 78.5 t/m2.Coal cakes of acceptable strength, and therefore sufficient stability for further processing, were obtained for all materials evaluated during this study.Further studies should be conducted to determine the effect of zeta potential during the compaction of coals.IntroductionExxaro Resources has successfully installed and commissioned a world-class stamp-charging horizontal 1 t electrically-heated pilot-scale coke oven at its Metallurgy Services facility. Prior to operating the coke non-recovery pilot plant, it is essential to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 coal cake into the oven. The design of Exxaro’s pilot plant is such that the coal cake is pushed inside the oven by means of a pusher plate, rather than through a ‘spoon’ feed mechanism, such as is found in industrial horizontal coke ovens. The pusher plate loading mechanism dictates that the coal cake should possess high stability and inherent strength during loading into the oven, owing to frictional forces exerted by the oven floor. In order to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability, various compaction parameters needed to be verified and established on a small laboratory-scale compaction machine."

Methods for treating and processing refractory gold ores are well established. However, what is less well understood is how the formation of the gold-bearing deposits affects gold processing and extraction. In order to evaluate the effect of ore genesis on gold extraction a number of South African gold deposits were studied. These included complex Pilgrim’s Rest samples as well as refractory Fairview, Barbrook, and Consolidated Murchison samples. We found the refractory nature of gold ores is controlled by a limited number of well-understood mineralogical factors. Solid solution gold is linked to low temperature and pressure conditions in fine-grained sedimentary lithologies, while reactive pyrrhotite can form from hydrothermal fluids associated with mafic magmatic rocks. These formational controls can be used to identify and avoid complex deposits at a desktop study phase, or address and reduce complications further along the pipeline using early mineralogical studies.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

"To eliminate nozzle clogging during continuous casting of ship plate steel and reduce the calcium addition required, the composition of CaO-MgOAl2O3 inclusions in the liquid phase region must be controlled. Thermodynamic calculations using FactSage show that when the balanced Al content is 0.03 mass %, aCa in the liquid steel is 1–10 ppm, and aMg is 0.01–0.3 ppm; and when the balanced Al content is 0.06 mass %, aCa in the liquid steel is 1–30 ppm, and aMg is 0.05–0.9 ppm. The CaO-Al2O3-CaS inclusions can be controlled in the liquid region below 1600°C at aCa values of 5 ppm, 15 ppm, and 30 ppm, and the balanced Al content should be controlled in the range of 0.001–0.050, 0.005–0.250, and 0.010–0.50 mass %, respectively. Based on theoretical analysis, the refining slag composition should be controlled to 45–53 mass % CaO, 30–37 mass % Al2O3, 6–12 mass % SiO2, and 6–8 mass % MgO. Optimization of the slag system and steel composition can reduce, or even eliminate, the requirement for calcium treatment. The total oxygen content in the slab can be controlled to 15–21 ppm, with typical micro-inclusions ??10 ??m in size, with compositions in the CaO-Al2O3-MgO and CaO-Al2O3-CaS systems. Introduction With the rapid growth in steel output in China and the changes in the macroeconomic environment, competition in the steel industry has become more intense. The technology for economical cleaning of high-grade steel is important for improving product quality and reducing production costs. However, the functions of refining equipment have not been fully taken into consideration, and the combination of refining methods has not been optimized completely. These problems have become a bottleneck, restricting modern steel enterprises from developing an economic clean steel production process. Ship plate steel produced by the converter long process has been selected as the example in this study. The composition of the steel is shown in Table I. This steel is a high-strength low-alloy steel for rolling media and heavy plates, mainly used for ocean-going vessels and other steel structures. The carbon content in the steel is far from the peritectic point, and the crack sensitivity of the slab surface is weak, so impurities and gas content are strictly limited. Therefore, the process route BOF (basic oxygen furnace) – LF (ladle furnace) – CC (continuous casting) needs to be studied."

(Met.) in 1983-all from the University of Pretoria. Mr J.A.D. Britz matriculated in 1958 at the Roodepoort Hoerskool, and joined the mining industry in 1959 as a student mine official at the Rand Mines Training Centre. Mr J.A. Cruise matriculated at Durban High School and joined Union Corporation as a Learner Official in 1962. He was awarded a scholarship to read for B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in mining engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand
