Reduce longwall intake contamination by controlling respirable dust generated by the stage loader. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber on the stage loader immediately outby the crusher. Dusty air from the crusher is drawn through the scrubber and a clean air discharge is delivered into the primary face airflow. How It Works The contamination of intake air is a significant dust control problem often overlooked on many longwall faces. This dust source contributes to the full shift dust exposure of all face personnel, and thus can significantly affect compliance with Federal regulations. Several sources contribute to contamination; however, dust generated by the stage loader crusher is the single largest source. The breaking action of the crusher generates a tremendous quantity of dust, which mixes with the primary ventilation airstream and is carried down the entire length of the longwall face. The installation of a water-powered scrubber (see diagram) has proven effective in controlling crusher-generated dust. The scrubber is mounted immediately outby the crusher. Three samples of waste lubricating oil were re-refined by processes developed by the Bureau of Mines and reformulated with additives to meet designated requirements for viscosity and service. Quality-defining bench-scale tests were used to compare and evaluate the quality of these three motor oils, eight commercially re-refined lubricating oils, and three new lubricating oils. Most of the re-refined oils studied could not be distinguished from new oils by the bench tests used to define quality. There was some evidence, however, that one and perhaps more of the re-refined products investigated might not meet all of the quality standards of new lubricating oil, suggesting the need for better quality controls by re-refiners.

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. Correlations between mass spectra and molecular structures of 186 organic sulfur compounds are discussed. The olefinic ions, the alkyl ions, the CnE2n+1 ions, the m/e 61 ions, and the m/e 35 ions in the spectra of thiols are related to molecular structure. In the spectra of sulfides, the olefinic ions, the m/e 61 ions, the m/e 35 ions, the CnH2n+1S+ ions, and the CnH2n+1SH+ ions are correlated with molecular structure. For disu1fides, the correlations relate HSSF+& and RSSH+ ions to molecular structure. Base peaks of alkylthiophenes are correlated to their molecular structures. Some unimolecular reactions of sulfur compounds in the mass spectrometer are considered. A cyclic intermediate is suggested for the reaction which produces m/e 47, CH3S+, and m/e 48, CH4S+, ions in the spectra of sulfides. An expanded ring is suggested as a possible intermediate in the reactions of thiophenes. Heats of formation of sulfur-containing ions and their appearance potentials are presented in tabular form. Ionization potentials for sulfur-containing radicals and molecules are also given. Discussion of the spectra, tabulated in the appendixes, provides an insight into the relationship of the molecular structure of a compound to the mass-to-charge ratios and the intensities of the ions in its mass spectrum. Correlations of the mass spectra with molecular structures are empirically developed by observing regularities in the spectra of the reference compounds. Correlations extend the usefulness of mass spectra because they can be employed to determine the molecular structure of an unknown compound.

More specifically, phosphate rock may be defined as a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals, usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and in sufficient quantity to permit its use directly, or after beneficiation, in the manufacture of phosphorus-bearing products. The grade or quality of phosphate rock is expressed either in terms of its phosphorus oxide (P20S) content or the equivalent in tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(P04)2). A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war the Bureau of Mines was requested to obtain in¬formation on the temperature at which ammonium nitrate mixed with certa: contaminants would react rapidly. This information was desired in connection with an investigation of an explosion that had occurred during the evaporation, by air agitation, of volutions containing ammonium nitrate in which compressor oil that might have passed the filters was suspected of being a contaminant.During the course of this work it was found that mixtures of ammonium nitrate and zinc reacted rapidly at comparatively low temperatures: and since zinc could not positively be eliminated as a contaminant in the explosion in question, a series of tests was carried out, not only with mixtures of ammonium nitrate and compressor oil but also ammonium nitrate and zinc with and without oil. A few experiments were made with metals other than zinc.The investigation was not as extensive as might have been desired, owing to limitations -in time. The results are presented at this time in view of their current interest in connection with the Texas City disaster, in which a large quantity of ammonium nitrate detonated in the holds of two ships."

This report contains experimentally determined heat-content values for cerium dioxide and Columbium (niobium) dioxide in the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. There are no previous similar data for Columbium dioxide, and those for cerium dioxide have an upper limit of 373° K. The heat-content and corresponding entropy-increment data are presented in tabular form. Equations were derived to represent the heat contents and heat capacities. The data for cerium dioxide are entirely regular, but those for columbium dioxide show two previously unreported anomalies at 1,090° and 1,200° K.

Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by the need forr a stable anode for electrowinning metals, particularly zinc and copper, from acid solutions. The polarization behavior of Pb-Ag (1 pct Ag) anodes in H2SO4 and fluoride solutions was determined as the first step in the development of such an anode. A Luggin capillary, dc power supply, high-impedance voltmeter, and other equipment standard to an electrochemical laboratory were used in this study. It was determined that during polarization, a relatively hard, stable coating of Pb02 was formed on the surface of the lead-silver anode and the rate of formation of this coating was considerably enhanced by the presence of fluoride ions in solution. Subsequent investigations at the Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center resulted in the development of a Pb02-coated titanium (Pb02-Ti) anode. Results of this effort were presented in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 8111. Additional data resulting from extensive testing of the Pb02-Ti anodes, as well as process improvements and innovations, are included in this report. The anodes were considered generally unsatisfactory for zinc electrowinning because of lower conductivity, higher oxygen overvoltages, and shorter in-cell life as compared with the Pb-Ag anodes now being used in industry. However, the PbO2-Ti anodes were used successfully to oxidize waste chromium solutions and to electrowin copper.

This report presents a structural-mesh-generating computer program for the two-dimensional finite-clement method of mine structural analysis of single and multiple openings in nonhomogeneous rock mass. This program greatly reduces the amount of input data required and the chances of error which otherwise are large owing to the large amounts of data and the complex mesh involved. The program description, a user's guide, example problems, and program listing are included.

Floyd County, KY., contains sizable deposits of high volatile bituminous coal. Some of the coals have been blended with higher-rank coals and used in the manufacture of high-quality metallurgical coke. The Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. 1 beds produce the bulk of the present output in the county and contain the main known reserves of coal. Little information is available concerning the quality and extent of the deposits underlying the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 bed, although small operations in the past have worked a bed that is reported to be; the Lower Elkhorn. Undoubtedly, these lower beds occur in Floyd County, but depth Will preclude their development into a major source of fuel as long as large deposits of more-accessible coal are available. More is known of the occurrence of the beds above the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 owing to sporadic mining ventures in the upper measures. Many of the coal samples from beds above the Upper Elkhown No. 3. were collected in mines that had been abandoned. Almost all of the present production of Floyd County coal is taken from the Upper Elkhorn beds, and it is unlikely that their dominant position as coal producers will be challenged in the near future. Table 1 shows the coal production of the county by beds, during 1950.

Many gold-bearing ores throughout the Western United States contain small quantities of mercury. The presence of mercury not only decreases the gold-loading capacity of the activated carbon, but complicates the fire refining of cathodes and creates a potential health hazard. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods to limit mercury extraction during gold ore leaching and to remove mercury from cyanide leach solu-tions. Mercury dissolution was reduced from 40 to 10 pct by decreasing NaCN concentration from 20 lb to 0.34 lb per ton of solution at a pH of <11. When 0.1 lb CaS per ton of ore was added to a leach slurry, mer-cury extraction was reduced from 27 to 0.4 pct. Less than 0.5 pct of the mercury was solubilized when <0.1 lb CaS per ton of are, along with lime and NaCN, was added to a simulated grinding circuit.

Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the "gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ultimate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficacy of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity show a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate of gas injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.

Surface resistivity techniques were used at four field sites to monitor changes in apparent resistivities with variations in soil moisture content in the vadose zone. Apparent resistivity values were correlated with gravimetric moisture contents from soil samples taken at each site. Tensiometer readings were taken at two sites and correlated with the results of gravimetric moisture contents and apparent resistivities. Moisture at two of the sites was added by extensive watering; rainfall events were monitored at the other two sites. A recharge event at a dewatering program was monitored at a fifth site. A Ghosh-Koefed multi-layer computing algorithm was used to derive true resistivities from bulk or apparent resistivities. An automated data acquisition system was developed to measure resistivity changes and to process the data in the field. These studies are the first to evaluate measurement of moisture migration in clay rich soils using surface resistivity techniques. Results indicate that surface resistivity techniques readily measure changes in moisture contents in the vadose zone in clay rich soils. Correlation of apparent and true resistivity values with gravimetric moisture contents is more complex and requires additional research.

The purpose of this research was to develop a system capable of detecting changes in the structure of rocks, leading to failure of mine roofs, and/or excavations. A prototype system was developed, field tested and delivered to the United States Bureau of Mines for further evaluation and research. This system is based on the analysis of acoustic signals generated on the surface of the roof by an impact device and which are reflected or backscattered by flaws and discontinuities in the rock. The specially designed impact source is capable of generating high frequency acoustic signals with excellent repeatability. The system can also be used in conjunction with conventional acoustic pulse transducers. The received signal is digitized and the data transferred to a minicomputer for processing and display. This capability allows the immediate determination of wave velocity and/or distance to a reflecting interface. Various data processing techniques such as averaging, differentiating, and comparing of different signals can be selected by entering the appropriate commands on the keyboard. Being a programmable system it is possible to implement more advanced signal processing techniques. All results as well as the signal are displayed on a CRT. Furthermore, a permanent record of the data can be generated on paper tape, which can be reentered and processed at a later date. A communications interface allows transmission of the sampled signal to a large scale re-mote computer. The system was tested extensively in the laboratory, and field tested at the York Canyon Coal Mine. These tests proved the feasibility of operation in the mining environment. Results indicate that further investigation and development will have to be undertaken to fully develop the potential of this system in satisfying the goals of this research.

Basic data, in figures and tables, are brought together in this publication for the production of coal in the United States from 1800 to 1960, for crude petroleum, natural gas liquids, and natural gas from 1859 to 1960, and for hydropower since 1900. Production for each segment of the fuels complex in the principal producing States from 1946 to 1960 is shown. Data are not included for consumption as such or for imports and exports.
